Anne Olson

1926 – 2019

A limb has fallen from our family tree. Anne Olson passed away at the Good Samaritan Garden Vista Memory Care Cottage in Magrath, Alberta, on Saturday, December 7, 2019, at the age of 93 years. Anne Olson began her journey in this world on August 18th, 1926 in Soszno, Pinsk, Poland. She was the youngest of two children born to Aleksander and Viera Malyszcziki. Anne’s older brother Nick, 4 years her senior, sadly was a casualty of the second world war, passing two weeks before the war ended. Anne was educated in Poland and worked in Germany. While living in Europe, Anne learned to speak Polish, German, Russian and Ukrainian. Living through the hardships of World War II prompted Anne to emigrate to Canada. She travelled across the Atlantic Ocean, landing in Halifax on April 23rd, 1949 with her young son Genady (Ken). Traveling even further across Canada Anne chose to settle in Southern Alberta. Unable to speak English initially, Anne found work as a laborer in the sugar beet fields before moving to a farm in Warner in 1950 where she lived until 2017. Warner was where she learned to speak English and she found her true calling – Farm life. Anne loved gardening, growing a large vegetable garden every year. Flowers were her joy with Gladiolas being her favorite flowers. She raised a variety of animals and even picked rocks in the fields. She also loved to quilt and crochet. Her pieces were works of art. Anne also loved to sing and dance. Anne was truly fearless, a hard worker and one of a kind. There is nothing she would not attempt. Including making homemade wine. Anne was also an amazing cook. She was well known for her ability to set a feast on her table when company came calling. Anne had a gift for making the most delicious cabbage rolls and perogies. Her grandchildren loved Grandma’s homemade bread and homemade jam. Anne Olson was a mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a great, great grandmother. She was a complex personality who was strong willed, feisty and passionate in her views. She either liked you or she did not. Some still wonder on which side they stood. After 63 years on the farm, June 2017 Anne moved into The Good Samaritan’s Garden Vista Assisted Living residence in Magrath Alberta. February 2019, Anne was transferred to the Good Sam’s Memory Care Cottage where her journey across two continents ended. When she moved to Pinawa, MB, she was secretary to the reactor engineers at Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment. She worked in law firms in The Pas, MB, and in Pembroke, ON. She partnered with a good friend of hers and opened and ran Grampa John’s Drive Inn in Winnipegosis, MB. While living in Yorkton, SK, she was manager of the Yorkton Tourism Association. In Brandon, MB, she worked as a paraoptometric assistant. Peggy was a quick learner and put her whole mind to learning new things. Peggy enjoyed socializing with her friends – old and new alike. She enjoyed curling, golfing, and taking walks hither and yon. She enjoyed playing bridge and was active in several bridge groups in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Peggy loved to travel and made two trips to Europe and several to Japan. She enjoyed hosting Japanese female students who came to Lethbridge to study at the college and university. Wherever she lived – in ten communities across the prairie provinces and Ontario – she was deeply involved in the life and work of each community. In the past twenty-five years living in Lethbridge, she became involved in numerous community organizations, including Friends of the Library and the Lethbridge Branch of Blankets for Canada. In particular, she was highly involved in Lions Clubs International – over fifty years as an active Lion. At the time of her passing, she was active in the West Lethbridge Lions Club. Church and faith meant a lot to Peggy. She was active in the Southern AB Japanese United Church in Lethbridge. WIERSMA

We sure hope our dad makes it to his memorial this week—he might be too busy!! He’s got things to do,

you know!

It is with heartbreaking sadness that our beloved dad’s journey here has come to an end. WILLIAM WIERSMA passed away peacefully in Lethbridge, AB with family by his side after a two year fight with bladder cancer. He was 80 years old.

He is survived by his four loving children, Lorry & Murray Dorren, James & Deb Wiersma, Cindy & Mark Matheson, and Dwight & Kelsey Wiersma; ten grandchildren, Sarah (Liam) Plunkett, Brayden & Kolby Dorren, Caitlin Wiersma, Cody (Samantha) Wiersma, Spencer (Alysha) Matheson, Finley Matheson, and Lizzy, Lee & Lucas Wiersma; and four great-grandchildren, Austin & Rowan Poytress, and Lyla & Brexton Plunkett. He is also survived by his two sisters, Tine & Folkje, and his brother, Tette Wiersma, along with their families in Holland. We will all miss him dearly.

He was predeceased by his wife and our lovely mother, Elisabeth Reurink, in January 1994; his parents, Wijbren Wiersma & Gritje de Vries (Holland), and his brothers, Theo (Golden, BC) and Al Wiersma (Bonnyville, AB), along with many extended family members.

Bill was born January 29, 1939 in Burgwerd, Holland. He came to Canada in May 1957. He boarded the ship S.S. Groote Beer in Rotterdam when he was 18 years old along with his brother Theo. They ported in Montreal after a two week trip across the Atlantic ocean. He then took a cattle train across Canada to Southern Alberta, where he built a wonderful life. He lived in Picture Butte where he butchered meat, met and married a beautiful bride, and filled his life with four children. In 1973 he moved to Lethbridge where he worked at Canada Packers for most of his career.

He was extremely passionate about hunting and fishing and filled our house with many trophies of his accomplishments. He loved shooting his bow, tying flies for fishing, and counting the blue birds in the Crowsnest Pass. He always had an amazing story to tell about his many adventures. He was still climbing mountains until cancer slowed him down over the past two years. He continued to fish often in Mission with his good friend Len and loved going to see the fellas for coffee most days.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Glenda Wert officiating.

TURNER

The kindest, sweetest of all angels departed from this earth on December 6, 2019. NORMA TURNER was born in Raymond, Alberta 88 years ago on June 6, 1931. She grew up in Raymond within the loving embrace of the Ronda and Lauretta Dahl family. As she reached the gates of Heaven, Norma was greeted enthusiastically by her parents Ronda and Lauretta Dahl, her brothers Mark and Eugene Dahl and her sisters Margaret (Leishman), Zelma (Low), Janet (Zobrist) and Fern (Hicken). Also there to greet her were granddaughters Miranda Hicken and Tabitha Stepple, as well as great grandson Parker Turner-Colling. George and Thelma Turner and Doug and Janet Alston were among the throng awaiting Norma, but standing at the front of the line of those awaiting her arrival, with tears of joy streaming down his face, was her eternal companion Lawrence Fredrick Turner.

Left behind on earth to miss and mourn Norma are her five children Doug (Kathy) Turner, Sharon (Max) Wendorff, Renae Stepple, Bruce (Wendy) Turner, and David (Julia) Turner, her 14 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren, as well as her sister Diane Dudley.

Norma was a longtime resident of Raymond and Lethbridge where she was loved by everyone who had the good fortune to know her. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and actively served the Lord in her many and varied ward and stake callings in Primary, Sunday School, Young Woman’s, Relief Society and as a full time missionary in the Halifax, Canada Mission with her husband Lawrence.

Norma was employed for many years in the office at the Canadian Western Natural Gas Company in Raymond. Additionally, she and Lawrence operated the Waterton Lakes National Park golf course as well as the Raymond Golf Course.

Norma is famous for her kindness to all, her sweet disposition, her desire to serve others, her sense of humour and her delicious homemade pies!

Waterton has always been a very special place to Norma and the Dahl family and extended family. She had many wonderful memories of time spent there with her family at the cabin. On her second to last day of life here on earth, Norma was able to enjoy some time at Waterton with two of her children.

The Turner family wish to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Prairie Ridge Good Samaritan Society, as well as Dr. Eric Baker and hospital staff for the care given to Norma the last few years of her life.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, COBBLESTONE CHAPEL in Raymond, Alberta. (27 Cobblestone Lane, Raymond). Friends are welcome to meet with the family prior to the Service from 10:00 to 10:45 A.M.

In addition to his working career, his interests varied from playing golf and cribbage to participating in the Kiwanis Festival.

Lily Campbell of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Frederick Keith Campbell, passed away peacefully at Good Samaritans West Highlands on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at the age of 79 years. We will miss her but celebrate that she is finally with her true love Fred, who was her husband of 53 years. Fred was Lily’s knight in shining amour and did everything to make her smile. Lily was born in Strasburg, Saskatchewan on January 27, 1940 to Olaf and Ethel Hansen. Lily married her childhood sweetheart, Fred Campbell an RCMP member on October 13, 1961 in Strasburg, Saskatchewan. Lily was a dedicated wife and mother and she treasured her four children and embraced every single moment with them. She especially loved her role as grandma to nine grandchildren and loved being around her family. Lily used to say how lucky her and Fred were to have all these young people to love. Lily loved babies and got to meet her great granddaughter Merritt before her passing. Lily was highly skilled with knitting and crocheting; she made every house she was in a true home and loved her yard full of flowers and plants. She wrote a book about her life and said her greatest joy and miracle was her family. Mom, your memory will live with us all and we will lead our lives by your example of kindness, compassion and care. We will carry on family traditions because we know how much family mattered to you and we will let your love for us be our guide. Special thanks to Lily’s sister Linda who spent so much time with her especially in the last few years when she needed it most, thank you Auntie for your love and support.

Betty was predeceased by her husband, Joseph, her two sons, Larry and Kenny, and her parents, James and Rosalie Koncs. Betty is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Following her marriage to Benson, she worked for many years at Frache’s Flower Shop and Greenhouse – a time in her life that she cherished. Thank you to family and friends who visited Betty and filled her days with happiness while she was a resident at St. Therese.

He was a cadet in his teen years and that is where his love of airplanes began, and he later obtained his pilot’s license. Later his love for airplanes took him to Reno for the air races. MAXWELL

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Karen Anne Maxwell, daughter to proud parents Joan Marie Maxwell (Nolan) and William Douglas Maxwell (passed February 11, 2000), loving sister to Donna Marie Maxwell (Ian Charles Davidson) and devoted Godmother to dear Chris, Sophie and Sage Skjodt. Karen was born November 3, 1965 in Fort McMurray, Alberta and led a remarkable life. It was once remarked that Karen could fall upstairs, but in truth, Karen dared where others might not. Karen was someone who worked for what she wanted, was loyal, direct and fearlessness in setting boundaries and earnest in a way that reminded all of us around her of the beauty of being vulnerable and honest about who we truly are at our cores. Karen grew up in Lethbridge, Alberta, attending Lethbridge Collegiate Institute and graduating from the University of Lethbridge with a degree in Management. At twenty-one years of age Karen left Lethbridge and headed east. From working at the CBC in Toronto; to working in music management with Sloan and the Rankin Family in Halifax; to attending the Fashion Institute of Technology in Milan, Italy; to teaching gifted young women at Sacred Heart School of Halifax, after completing a second degree, this time in Education; Karen brought order and beauty to everything she touched. Karen returned to Southern Alberta in 2005, moving to Calgary with sister, Donna. It was here Karen created a beautiful life for herself complete with a lovely home and deep and abiding friendships. It was one of Karen’s many gifts that wherever she lived she developed deep friendships with people of integrity, wit and kindness. Karen loved to travel, including regular trips to New York City, Paris and California. Whether it was the Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City or the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, Karen had a keen understanding of and appreciation for art and fashion and was a gifted writer. A few highlights of travels include family birthdays celebrated in Athens, Santorini and Paris, going on tour to Japan with Sloan, summers and Christmases spent with family at our family summer home on the Bras Dor Lake along with numerous trips to Indian Wells, California which served as a launch pad for road trips for Karen and Mom to towns along the Southern California coastline. Karen always knew what the latest and greatest trend, event, store, food or restaurant was, and she had boundless energy and enthusiasm to experience the best new thing. Through Karen we saw all that was new and interesting in the world. Karen passed from a very rare and aggressive form of cancer. She still had so much life left to live. We are heartbroken. There are times in life we can impact change by working harder, longer or smarter and then there are times we are faced with circumstances beyond our control. Watching Karen face such remarkably unfair circumstances over which she had no control we learnt what grace truly means. We will forever miss our sweet, beautiful Karen but we will carry her in our hearts forever and she will go on in in the memories of each friend and family member she travelled with, laughed with and simply spent time with. A special thank you to the remarkable team at Rosedale Hospice. Their compassion and expertise are unparalleled. They placed their arms around Karen and our family and loved and cared for us during a terribly sad and difficult time and for this we are profoundly grateful. A memorial mass will be performed for the repose of Karen’s soul at 10:00 am, Friday, December 20, 2019 at Sacred Heart Church, 1307 – 14th St. S.W., Calgary with a reception to follow. Internment to occur at Forest Haven Memorial Garden in Sydney, Nova Scotia summer 2020.

She is also survived by her close friends Charmaine Dittrick (Paul Pritchard) and Karen (Doug) Christie.

Susan was born on May 6, 1956 in Calgary to Art and Myra Passey. She spent her childhood there, graduated high school and attended Mount Royal College, after which she became an administration assistant at Weston Bakery and later with the Calgary Catholic School Board. She married her best friend Philip Roussy “The Car Starter” in 1979. They went on to raise two children, Edward (born 1981) and Sarah (born 1986). In 1984, due to a recession, they moved to Tumbler Ridge, BC for four years before finally settling down for good in Fort Macleod, AB. Susan was an active leader in the community, taking on volunteer positions and/or being involved with the Girl Guides, 4-H and other organizations. She was a loving mother to both of her children and a devoted wife to her husband Phil. After completing an accounting program at Lethbridge College, Susan and Phil both decided to become entrepreneurs and start their own oilfield reclamation consulting business, PR Enviro in 1997. Pohksinaimskaissohko’maapi (Little Thunder Pipe Boy)

Andre Daniel Big Snake-Weasel Moccasin

May 16, 2000 – December 15, 2019

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Andre who left suddenly to Omahksspatsikoyi.

Andre was born to Wylie (Jessica Black Rabbit) Weasel Moccasin and Dana Big Snake. Left to mourn are his parents, siblings: Alize, Daija, Destiny, Christopher Jr., Baby Wylie, Brandon, Hayden, Jewel, Marley, and Rick; grandparents Alva & Patrick Black Plume and, Justine Yellow Fly; paternal aunts & uncles: Willis (Terrace), Theresa (Paul), Louis (Cheryl), Todd (Tina), Tyler (Erica), Dee Dee (Priscilla) Beebe, Lance (Sophia), Pamela (Donald), and Leslie (Carla) Black Plume; maternal aunt Jolayne Belcourt; uncles Lauren & Carlin Big Snake, Godmother Larissa Big Snake, Godfather Jared Weasel Moccasin and his extended families of Weasel Moccasin, Beebe, Big Snake, Cutter and Crows.

Andre was predeceased by his grandfathers Wilbert Beebe, Claude Crow and Donnie Yellow Fly; great-grandparents Howard & Mabel Beebe, Dan & Ada Weasel Moccasin, Lucy Black Plume, and Bernard Big Snake & Mary Cutter.

Andre attended Aahsaopi, G.R. Davis, F.P. Walsh schools and graduated in June of 2018 from Kainai High School. Andre was a jokester and, in school, his teachers would call him “class clown” as this was always mentioned during his parent/teacher interviews. Andre’s secondary education may have been short lived as he wanted to quit school because of all the costumes at his first school Halloween party. Alas, he went back the next day! But in later years, he refused to go into the school’s haunted houses.

Andre’s work history included employment at Blood Tribe Agricultural Project, Blood Tribe Economic Development Entrepreneur Program, Blood Tribe Employment and Training’s Safety and Carpentry programs, and his most recent venture at the Blood Tribe’s FCSS Food Bank.

Andre was involved and exposed to Blackfoot traditional teachings and had a deep respect for it. He was part of Kaanatsoomittaiks for several years. The annual Blood Tribe Sundance was his favorite time of the year and he would take leave from work just to be there. He was our “go-for”. From his home teachings and school curriculum, Andre understood and spoke our Blackfoot language. He took pride in knowing the school’s Blackfoot Prayer and even won Jr. Boy’s Grass Dance Championship at the very first Levern Indian Days celebration.

Andre experienced all kinds of activities and sports including basketball but the sport he favored was hockey. He was part of Kainai’s minor hockey league to his Midget years where his seasonal highlights were the Treaty and Provincial tournaments. Andre’s lifelong friends, ‘da Boyz’, were formed and was so proud when the Midgets brought home the 2017 Banner! A few years ago, his brother Al started calling him ‘Onge’. We asked why. Al’s reply was Andre’s name was too long and ‘Onge’ sounded like his name when shortened. During Midget games, Grandpa would call him ‘Onge’ and… the name stuck. His friends all called him ‘Onge’. Andre was also involved in the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corp and at the age of 13 he left home for the very first time to attend a two-week general training in Vernon, BC. Of course, some were lonesome. Grandpa and Grandma were ready to drive 755 kilometres to pick Andre up. However, they were talked into not picking him up. He completed the training.

Andre loved to eat but would not eat Grandpa’s cooking…Dad was his favorite cook. His favorite past time was cruising with ‘da Boyz’, playing ground hockey, shinny and basketball. Andre loved his concerts even travelling to see his favorite rapper Juice World in Vancouver this past spring. Unfortunately, J.W. passed away. Andre then said to dad, “Geez, Dad. With the passing of J.W., it just feels like one of ‘da Boyz’ died.”

Andre was quite the character. As a toddler and during potty training, he would command further attention calling to Dad and Grandpa, “I’m done!” He had a way of squeezing money out of dad, grandpa and grandma…all at the same time. He could talk his way out of anything when caught doing something he wasn’t supposed to be doing, and, we would believe him!

Andre was always the life of the party, loved to make people laugh and had a great sense of humour. He was also so proud of the baby Kehlani, our latest addition to the family. He was always checking on her and holding her.

We will forever miss Andre’s smile, his voice, the teasing of his siblings and just his presence. He’s our angel watching over us. Since our hearing the news of Andre’s passing, we have been comforted by the shower of dimes. Andre knew dimes were messages from Heaven. We are not worried anymore as we can hear him say, “Don’t worry about me… I’m ‘G’!”

The family thanks all who offered prayers, words of encouragement and support, Marcel & Verda Weasel Head, Siksika Nation Chief and Council, Blood Tribe Chief and Council, Saipoyi Elementary School, Blood Tribe Departments and Entities and especially to Fort Macleod RCMP Cst. Stubbe for his compassion expressed at our time of deep sorrow.

The Family Service will be at the Cardston Seniors’ Centre, Cardston on Fri., Dec. 20th at 5:00 p.m. followed by the Wake Service at the Old Agency Hall, Blood Reserve from 7:00 – 11:00 p.m.. The Funeral Service will be at the Old Agency Hall on Sat., Dec. 21st at 11:00 a.m.

Dr. Kenneth William Richards

August 10, 1946 – December 17, 2019

It is with deepest regret that we announce the sudden passing of Ken Richards, beloved husband of Linda Mae (Ost) Richards of Lethbridge. Also grieving his passing are Dr. Kimberly Richards (Abbotsford, B.C.), Keith and Dr. Theresa Richards (Portland), Aaron and Julia and grandchildren, Thea and Elliot (Seattle). How proud Ken was of his family! He loved doing things with them. He loved to hear the ways they challenge themselves and what they contribute to the world. Ken’s passing will also be grieved by a circle of friends and scientific colleagues from Lethbridge, Saskatoon and around the world. Ken was the son of Doris (Larmour) and William “Bill” Richards of Lethbridge (predeceased), and the brother of Deborah (Victoria, B.C.). As a junior high student Ken was part of Dr. Ruby Larson’s science club. Caught by the science bug, he studied at the U. of A. and did summer bee research at Beaverlodge and on Ellesmere Island. Ken obtained a PhD in Entomology from the University of Kansas where he studied with famed entomologist, Dr. Charles D. Michener. The topic of his dissertation was “Population Ecology of Bumble Bees in Southern Alberta.” Ken and his first wife, Lynn, did the research for his dissertation west of Pincher Creek. After convocation, Ken returned to Lethbridge Research Station to work with leaf cutter bees and pollination. Much of the success of his work at Lethbridge Research Station was accomplished with his lifelong friend and workmate, John Virostek. Happy to add to Ken and Lynn’s lives was the birth of sons, Keith and Aaron, born during those years. Following his marriage to Linda Mae in 1986, Ken and Linda spent a year at world leader Rothamsted Experimental Station at Harpenden, England where Ken studied the use of leaf cutter bees in the pollination of lupine flowers. They returned to their previous jobs in Lethbridge, and in 1989 their daughter, Kimberly, was born. In 1996 Ken took over management of Canada’s Plant Genetic Resources with its relocation to Saskatoon from Ottawa. Ken supervised the construction of the new Gene Bank attached to Agriculture and Agri-food Canada at the University of Saskatchewan. Ken and Tim Myers divided in half every packet of the 550,000 packet collection of plant seeds for the transfer. Half of the collection was sent by surface trucks and half of the collection was relocated by a Canadian government Hercules airplane. In subsequent years the plant collection was joined in Saskatoon by the microbial, fruit tree and animal collections. Ken assembled and supervised a wonderful team of scientists who worked from P.E.I. to the B.C. Okanagan. He and Linda and Kimberly lived in beautiful Saskatoon for fifteen years. Ken was a great ambassador for Canadian agriculture and Canadian bees. He represented Canada at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the U. N. for the ratification of treaties sharing and protecting genetic material. He delivered the Canadian collection of genetic material to Svalbard, Norway to the opening of the Global Seed Vault. In 2011 Ken and Linda retired to a wonderful Lethbridge acreage where Ken could grow bee-friendly, native Canadian plants, and Linda could have her horses. An active member of the Lethbridge and District Horticultural Society, Ken keenly grew plants and planted them in the Hort section of the new Legacy Park. Ken returned to previous research conducting native bee counts at Waterton before and after the 2017 fire. During bee season he would weekly walk a section of the park identifying the bees and recording what flowers they were visiting. Parks Canada benefitted from this accumulated research report. Ken was a world-class scientist, loving father, dedicated friend and community member, a beloved husband. Ken and Linda loved to travel together. Botanical gardens, theatre and art galleries brought them such pleasure. Ken loved to share his immense knowledge of plants and bees to interested individuals or public presentations. A tribute event will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that you plant some bee-friendly flowers in your garden, or made donations to Lethbridge and District Horticultural Club, or Canadian Wildlife Federation.

The couple later divorced, and Laverne moved to Lethbridge, Alberta, around 1968, where she raised her four children. In Lethbridge she worked for Schwartz Realty later moving to Calgary where she sold real estate for Builders Realty along with other business ventures and selling various products. Laverne was an avid, worldwide traveler spending her free time in 41 countries, encompassing six continents. She was also an avid and excellent skier and taught all her kids how to ski on Westcastle Mountain in Pincher Creek, Alberta. She continued skiing until she was stricken with cancer about a year and a half ago. While she has skied numerous mountains, including some in Europe, Big Mountain in Whitefish was always her favorite. Whitefish is where she met John Kavanagh and the couple had been together for 23 years. They spent their time happily together hiking, fishing boating, huckleberry picking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, 4-wheeling, swimming, dancing and traveling throughout Montana, Canada, Ireland, Hawaii and various other destinations in the United States. They also enjoyed spending time in Canada visiting family and friends and at their river property in Essex and in Shelby where they have many friends. Laverne was an excellent cook, rarely using a recipe and passed her cuisine skills onto to her four children. She especially enjoyed cooking at family gatherings in Whitefish. Her bright smile, outgoing personality, kind and gentle demeanor touched the hearts of everyone who knew her. She will be greatly missed, but the beautiful memories of her will live on forever. She is survived by her two brothers Bernie (Heather) Schmid, Warner, Alberta; Wayne (Leona) Schmid, Claresholm, Alberta; three sons Randy (Gwen) Atchison, Canmore, Alberta; Rob Atchison, Calgary, Alberta; Rick (Kim) Atchison, Sylvan Lake, Alberta; stepson Brian (LeAnne) Kavanagh, Cut Bank, Montana; stepdaughters Barb (Tres) Genger, Cut Bank, Montana; Darcy (Brian) White, Shelby, Montana; Tracy (Jeff) Swanson, Happy Valley, Oregon; 16 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Lana (Brian) Lukenda. A celebration of Laverne’s life will be held in the spring, the date, time and place to be announced later. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations in Laverne’s memory be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Jim and his family came to Milk River as a “worker Priest” in the fall of 1975. He worked at the Prairie Rose Lodge and served as a minister at St. Matthews Church in Milk River.

Jim attended Lutheran Theological Seminary in Saskatoon and became an ordained Lutheran Minister in 1986. His first call was to Leader/Burstall, Saskatchewan. Jim served at a number of churches in both Alberta and Saskatchewan. He retired in 2000 when Jim and Jean moved back to Milk River. Jim continued to be involved with interim ministry positions until he fully retired.

Jim moved into the Prairie Rose Lodge in November of 2017. He so enjoyed the fellowship and friendships that he made with so many of the wonderful people that he met while there.

Dad enjoyed many hobbies over the years including photography, road trips, carpentry, gardening and researching family history. His favorite past time was to attend family gatherings and he loved visiting. Dad loved his ministry service and it was especially meaningful to have dad/grandpa perform family weddings and baptisms.

Our Dad taught us the value of hard work and perseverance; dad and mom decided early on that family came first; we always knew, without a doubt, that we were loved; they left a legacy of a loving, close knit family that included all who came to our family through love; we will continue to stand by each other through the joys and the sorrows of life.

Dad touched our lives, our hearts and was a blessing to many through his ministry and his gentle manner. He will be in our hearts forever. We will miss his smile; he always had such a warm smile and a great chuckle. Dad truly was well loved by many and will be deeply missed.

We would like to thank all of the caring and dedicated staff at the Prairie Rose Lodge in Milk River, the Milk River EMS, Milk River Home Care, Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge and the Palliative Care Team in Lethbridge.

We want to say a special thank you to Dr. Krog and all of the staff at the Milk River Health Centre. We appreciate your care and dedication in looking after dad/grandpa; you became a part of our family during this time and we will be forever grateful to you.

For those who would like to visit with the family, a time of Visitation will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB, on Friday, January 3, 2020 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

KOLPAK

John Kolpak, wondrous human, husband, father, musician, photographer and gentle soul, passed away on December 26, 2019, peacefully and without pain.

Born on December 28, 1935 in Nowosiolki, Poland, John lived a loving, caring life centred on Lela, his adoring wife of 57 years, and his three daughters Diana, Kathie and Rita, to whom he passed on his artistic and musical talents. He deeply loved his grandchildren Jenna, Erin, Kieran and Veronica, sons-in-law Michael Melling, Scott Rasmussen and Patrick Leslie, siblings Leonard, Teresa and Henry, and his extended family.

A lover of forests, cars and music, John was a superbly talented accordionist and photographer. He loved to camp, fish, and hunt for mushrooms, especially in Westcastle. His barbecuing skills were second to none.

A proud member of the Lethbridge Polish-Canadian community, John served as president of the Polish-Canadian Association for four years. He and Lela helped countless Polish families who emigrated to Canada, welcoming them to their home, known as “little Poland,” and helping them adjust to lives in a new country.

John had no time for cruelty or inhumanity. He knew firsthand the suffering and horror of war and the wrenching hardships of poverty, displacement and emigration but never complained or sought pity for any of these things. Known as “The Professor,” he engaged in spirited discussions about history, politics and science, delivered regular weather updates and loved to tell goofy jokes.

John worked at the Lethbridge Research Station for over 31 years, beginning as a Technical Photographer and eventually becoming head of the Biographics Unit in 1979, retiring in 1991. In addition to his day job, he was a professional wedding photographer, taught accordion and played in the Rhythmaires at dances throughout Southern Alberta.

A celebration of John’s life will be held on Sunday, December 29th at 4:00 p.m. at the Polish Hall, 745 – 13 Street North, Lethbridge. All are welcome.

Lela and family would like to thank the staff at Extendicare Fairmont Park for their exceptional care and compassion for John throughout his time there.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Trudy Vonkeman

1934 – 2019

Our inspiring, tenacious, quick-witted and fun-loving mom Trudy Vonkeman (aka Geertruida Anke, née van Bruggen) left us on Friday, December 27 for new adventures. You may know her from her daily 5km coulee walks (until what turned out to be cancer stopped her in October), attendance at cultural happenings, or volunteer work with the Galt Museum & Archives and Dutch Canadian Club of Lethbridge.

Born June 25, 1934 to Hendrik van Bruggen (1900-1978) and Ankje (née Spoelstra, 1899-1980) in The Netherlands, Trudy survived WWII and the infamous hunger winter of 1944, as well as a near-drowning in Mallorca, Spain from laughing too hard, to live a life filled with family and great friends (including fellow Scout leaders); work as a stenographer, banking and book publisher assistant; travels by foot, bike, Solex, trains, planes, boats, sea kayaks… her most challenging adventure was emigrating to Canada in 1981 with husband Wim and three children to join his family on the prairies.

Left to mourn in Canada and recall great memories are daughter Anine (Chris, Mason & Lauren), sons Alwin (Vicky, Sebastian, Maxwell) and Herwin (Terriann, Christopher, Jeremy); in-laws John and Jo, Gerda, Elly, Ina and Cor Brouwer, Mary and Fred Venhuis, Pete Schuld, Louis Tolsma, and their families. In Papua New Guinea, Trudy’s oldest brother Johan and his extended family. In The Netherlands, Trudy’s youngest brother Henk van Bruggen (Ada, Maurice), her elder sister Elly’s children Anneke, Erik, Iris, Olaf, Yanthe and their families, Ditty Verburgh (Cor, Cor Jr., Marleen), Arnold van de Berg.

Trudy was predeceased by her parents, husband Wim Vonkeman (1929-2004), sister Elly (van Maanen), niece Madelon Mulder (van Bruggen), an infant sister, brothers-in-law Abe, Henk and Andy Vonkeman, Adrie van Maanen, and sisters-in-law Evelyn Tolsma and Alice Schuld. Marie Van Haarlem, who founded a maternity hospital in Lethbridge in 1910, was a direct relation of Trudy’s. Mom was amused that the path of her own life also ended up in Lethbridge.

A celebration to honour the unforgettable Trudy will be held in June 2020.
