BAILEY

It seems disingenuous to distill the entirety of a life down to so few written words, and what a life it was. From humble beginnings in Flin Flon, Manitoba, to stock car racing in Calgary. From long haul trucking to business ownership and everything in between. It seemed there was nothing he couldn’t do and couldn’t fix, mechanical or otherwise, as long as it was made before the 2000s. And though he began hundreds of projects, never finishing any of them, he was never too busy to stop what he was doing if someone needed help, family or otherwise. LAWRENCE BLAINE BAILEY passed away the evening of November 5, 2019, our father, a man who loved his wife and children, now gone, will never be forgotten.

Lawrence is survived by his loving wife Betty; daughter Jennifer (Jason) deBoer and granddaughters Ceili and Bridget; and son Sean (Shanna) Bailey and grandsons Connor and Ryder. Lawrence will be greatly missed by his family.

At Lawrence’s request, no funeral service will be held. A Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring.

CHERNESKI, MARGARET

(NEE PRICE)

Margaret gained her rest at home on the afternoon of Saturday, November 16, 2019, with the support of family.

Margaret began her life journey April 21, 1943, at the Grace Hospital in Calgary. She grew up in Taber with her parents, Sidney and Vivian Price. Her pony was a constant companion as they explored in and around Taber together. In school she enjoyed participating in baseball and track and field. Margaret attended Alberta College in Edmonton where she met her life companion. She started her career at Crown Trust in Calgary and ended at U. of A. hospital provincial lab in Edmonton. She married Lawrence on July 3, 1965, and moved to the farm January 1967, where they awaited the birth of their first child. Margaret’s passion for family, youth and music remained a constant through her life. She started at age 15 and continued for 35 years as Sunday school teacher, CGIT leader, Sunday School Superintendant and finished leading a South Alberta Youth group. During this time Margaret also supported her family through 4H, youth groups and sports; while maintaining the family home. Margaret became “mom” to many youth and helped shape many young persons lives. Fortunately, grandchildren arrived enabling Margaret to continue travelling to watch their various activities all through her life.

Barry Warnock

1961 – 2019

Born April 30, 1961 in Lethbridge, passed away at St. Michael’s Health Centre on November 14, 2019 at the age of 58, with his family by his side, after a brave battle with esophageal cancer. Barry was raised on the family farm near Turin. In typical farm fashion, he learned many skills. He could fix just about anything and if he couldn’t he’d beat it with a sledgehammer. Barry grew up riding motorcycles, street bikes and dirt bikes, and could ride circles around just about anyone. His Harley Davidson was his pride and joy. His son Shane shared his passion for motorcycles. In recent years he and Terri rode ATVs. Their daughter Kaylee joined them as well. They spent many days riding in the Crowsnest Pass with Rick and Cathy, and many other friends. Barry enjoyed motorsports in general and had an amazing garage stocked with every tool he ever needed. Barry played hockey with the Picture Butte Oldtimers for several years. He also enjoyed target shooting and was a member of the LFGA. Barry trained as a journeyman mechanic at Gasoline Alley in Lethbridge in the late 80’s. He then worked in the trucking industry for several years until settling at Lethbridge County in 2001, where he remained proudly employed until his illness took over. He was very conscientious and always put 110% into all he did. He wanted others to work to their potential and gladly mentored others. Barry had a great sense of humour and was quick with his wit and sarcasm. This trait was passed on to his children. Barry spoke his mind. He was always quick to lend a hand. He cherished his family and friendships and will be missed dearly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Barry’s family would like to thank all those who helped in so many ways over the past several months. We are forever grateful. Barry leaves behind his wife of 34 years, Terri; son Shane; daughter Kaylee; infant granddaughter Rome; and beloved pitbull Lettie. Barry is also survived by his mother Helen Scott; sister Sharon (Lynn) Silsbe; brother Bryan (Moira) Warnock, and their families. Also survived by Terri’s family: parents Anna and Walter Kortt; brothers Rick (Cathy) Kortt; Dave (Michelle) Kortt; sisters Barb (Shawn) Adams; Marianne (Vic) Friesen and their families. Barry was predeceased by his father Alvon and his infant daughter Caitlyn, both in 1992, and his beloved dog Jack in 2016. FORESTELL

MICHAEL EDWARD FORESTELL, of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 25, 2019 at the age of 93 years.

Dad leaves behind seven children: Paul of Vulcan, Clair (Elaine) of Lethbridge, Brian of Didsbury, Patricia Siray (Brian) of Millarville, Mary Jane (Katryn) of Halfmoon Bay, Michele Coddington (Matt) of Sonoma and Sean (Isabelle) of Newburyport. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren who all fondly remember their Opa.

Dad was predeceased by his beloved Gunda, his wife of 63 years who passed away on January 26, 2014. Dad was also predeceased by his grandson Daniel who passed away on September 11, 2016 and his daughter-in-law Karen who passed away on July 7, 2007.

Growing up in Coniston during the Depression and World War II definitely had its challenges. Dad worked part time in the INCO mines as did nearly all the men in the community. During the war, he lost three older brothers who served in the military and a younger brother due to illness. When he was old enough to serve, Dad took a different path and went to study in the seminary at the University of Western Ontario in London.

After departing from the seminary, Michael’s friend Roman Mann invited him out to the farm in Saskatchewan to work for the summer. At the farm, Dad met the love of his life, Gunda. They were married in 1950 in Saskatoon where Paul was born, and later moved to southern Ontario where Clair, Brian and Patricia were born and Dad worked for Firestone and RCA Records. In 1958, the growing family moved to Lethbridge where Mary Jane, Michele and Sean were born, and Dad started working for the Sisters of St. Martha at St. Michael’s Hospital.

In 1986, after 28 years at St. Michael’s as the Director of Finance, Dad retired. In his retirement, he continued to give back, to the community and could be found volunteering at the soup kitchen or using his finance background to take care of the books for the church. It was also a chance for Dad to satisfy his sense of adventure and interest in the world as he travelled across the country in a VW camper, and made his way to Scotland, France, Italy, Austria, Germany and Alaska to name a few.

Dad was well loved and will be missed by all who crossed his earthly journey. We will all remember him as a loving husband and father, his humble nature, his sense of humour, his love of travel, his love for books, his delight in playing crib with his grandchildren and his love for sharing good food and martinis with family and friends. We miss you Dad, but we’re grateful to have had such a wonderful and loving father and will always hold you in our hearts.

A Prayer Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at 7:00 P.M. with Father Nathan Siray officiating.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ST. MARTHA’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 355 Columbia Blvd. West, Lethbridge, AB on Friday, November 22, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. with Father Nathan Siray and Father William Monis concelebrating.

They eventually took over running the family farm and raised their children there until moving into the Village of Coutts in 1982.

GOMANY

“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

  • Winnie the Pooh, A. A. Milne

We recently said goodbye to one of our family’s most caring, optimistic and kind members. RITA LUCILLE GOMANY was born in Coaldale on August 5, 1950 and passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family, after a long illness, at her home in Lethbridge on November 17, 2019.

Rita was the one time lovely voice of the Sears switchboard and worked in the catalogue office for many years and made special friends including Sheila and Peggy. In addition to the people in her life, Rita loved the mountains, animals, and Beauty and the Beast. She was a strong advocate for animals, volunteering her time and donating what money she could to animal rescue agencies. She had many fur-babies over the years, most recently, Nala and Apollo.

Rita is survived by her mother Helen Gomany, brother John Gomany, sister Carol Ogden (Pierre Dubeau) and brother Robert Gomany.

Rita had no children of her own but she surrounded herself with many kids (as evident from the photos on her fridge) her nieces and nephews: Cyndi Starzyk-Frey (James), Roy Gomany, Laine Gomany (Sharryl), Stephanie Pond (Vince), Natalie Pavlis (Ferencz Kiss), John Dueck (Sheri-Lynn), Jason Gomany and special great nieces Desiree Starzyk, Samantha Starzyk (Daylin Yanke) and Cianna Starzyk-Frey. As well as numerous other great nieces and nephews.

Rita was predeceased by her father John Gomany, sister Margaret Pavlis and brother-in-law Frank Pavlis, sister-in-law Mabel Gomany, nephew Vince Starzyk and niece Connie Starzyk.

Special thanks to Dr. Eric Wilde, Tina and his staff and Dr. Rozemin Kizuk for all of their care of Rita over the years. Also thanks to all of her caregivers from Respiratory Home Care Solutions and AHS Home Care (especially RNs Delane and Kimberley). Also, thanks to the team at Green Acres Animal Hospital for their years of care of Rita’s fur-babies.

Even though she is not here to express it, she had a special love for her caregivers who were with her day and night at the end, her sissy Carol, nieces Cyndi, Natalie and Sammy (with Daylin).

Rita’s wishes were to not have a funeral ceremony or receive any flowers or cards. In lieu of that, she wished people would donate to the Lethbridge and District Humane Society.

MILLER
Notice is given that the paradigm shift felt on November 18, 2019, was the result of the passing of DAVID ALLEN MILLER, beloved husband of Wendy JoAnn Miller.
Although he survived being a Marine in Vietnam, cancer, being struck by lightning – twice, rattle snake encounters and a massive heart attack, he truly went against all odds and passed away, without a fuss or even a cuss, in his sleep at home.
His children are slightly concerned that he may actually be chasing a PINK/Air Supply concert tour or that he finally won the 649 Lotto, faked his own death and has fled to Wyoming to search for dinosaur bones. Scenarios that feel more real than the present.
Born to Marjorie and Bill Miller on August 20, 1948, in Rupert, Idaho (some may be old enough to recall that paradigm shift as well), Dave learned how to accidentally get a pitch fork stuck in the hind end of a cow and get it removed before his Dad saw, and mastered water skiing in the irrigation canals pulled by the fastest Idaho farm trucks.
Dave tricked the love of his life, Wendy Jo Miller, into marriage on June 10, 1972, wowing her with a diamond that he weaseled into a box of cracker jacks as the prize. She tricked him into moving back to Canada. They planted roots in Coalhurst, Alberta, and raised three magnificent children who never caused mischief.
As an engineer for Canadian Pacific Railway for 28 years, he mastered the art of creative cussing and not sleeping; however, the real benefits of being master of the train whistle was that it provided him the means to open the Bank of Dave, his children being his best clients. He is the reigning champion of “Loudest Spectator” at sporting events, both live and on TV, and indulged his children with extended motivational speeches and gems of lifelong wisdom, like “People In Hell Want Ice Water.” His motto was “work hard, play harder.” He highlighted this on many family trips, including an epic family excursion to China, showing off his water skiing skills in jeans, and on countless 4 wheeling/rock hunting adventures. Just when he didn’t think life could get any sweeter, he became a Grandpa.
The Man, The Myth, The Legend, is survived by his favorite child, Nichole Miller Mecham (Devin Mecham), his extremely handsome son with perfect hair, Aaron Miller (Shauna), and his over achiever stop-making-the-rest-of-us-look-bad son, Doctor Logan Miller (Lindsey Miller), his partner in crime and much younger brother, Dean Miller (Shawna Miller), his spoiled dog Charlie, who really really misses sharing supper, and in all sincerity, his stalwart and eternal companion of 47 years, Wendy Miller, whom our hearts break for the most. Dave has also left behind 13 grandkids who tipped the scales on his happiness, and a life time of rocks. So. Many. Rocks.
Official notice is given that the Bank of Dave is Closed. Old Man Miller has left the building.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, PICTURE BUTTE CHAPEL (801 Willow Ave Picture Butte AB). Friends are welcome to meet with the family at the church from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.

Susan Kimura (Martens)

March 9, 1938 – November 16, 2019

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother. She passed away, peacefully, on the morning of November 16, 2019 at the Chinook Regional Hospital, with family by her side.

Mom will be forever and deeply missed by her children Kelly (Michelle) Kimura and Kani (Lane) Jacobson, her grandchildren Deanna, Tanya, Dyson, and Lansing (Ian), her great grandchildren, Rori, Zane, Killian, Emily, and Alivia, her brothers David (Ruth) Martens, George (Ilene -deceased) Martens, and sister Mary (Pete) Loewen. Her brother in law and sister in law George and Grace Oshiro. She will be forever remembered by nieces, nephews, and all those whose lives she touched with her gentle soul, which are too numerous to mention.

Mom was predeceased by her husband, of 51 years, Seiji. Parents Heinrich Martens, and Maria Martens, Father in Law Takeo Kimura, Mother in Law Chito Kimura, her brothers and sisters in law Ben, Jake, Hank (Kay), John, and Bill (Karen), and her sisters and brother in laws Tina (Jake), Helen (Duncan), and Sara (Glen), her nieces Brenda, and Caroline, and nephews Monty, Dennis, and Henry. Brothers in law Harry Kimura, Mace Oshiro, and sister in law Julie Oshiro.

Mom was born in Maloneck, Saskatchewan on March 9, 1938 to Heinrich and Maria Martens. She was 1 of 12 children, the third youngest of them all. They moved to Barnwell, Alberta and eventually settled in Coaldale, where she lived until her passing.

On March 11, 1961 she married Seiji Kimura and together had 2 children Kelly, and Kani. She loved to travel and read, and was an amazing seamstress, so much so that she was requested to sew the wedding, bridesmaids, and graduation gowns for family and friends, through the years. She loved to spend time with family and friends over a good cup of coffee and conversation, and these times will be forever cherished by those whom she leaves behind. Mom was never short on cheekiness, spunk, and sass, and would definitely keep us on our toes with her wit, something that will be forever missed, but never forgotten. She was “Mom” to many of our friends growing up, and she wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. They were always welcome with a smile.

As time went on, and the family grew, she welcomed her grandbabies, and she is, and will always be, eternally proud of the amazing people they have become, and she loved them so very much. With grandchildren, came 5 great grandchildren, and even though distance kept her from seeing them as often as she would have liked, she loved each and every one, and it is a great shame that they will not get to know this amazing woman, but rest assured, they will have their special angel watching over them as they grow, and live their lives, and she will enjoy watching it all from above.

Mom said, shortly before she passed, “Miss me, but not too much”.

We would like to thank Pastors Gary Giesbrecht and Lil Thompson with the Coaldale Mennonite Church for their prayers and support for Mom and our families during this most difficult time.

We would also like to thank all the doctors and nurses of 4B, of the Chinook Regional Hospital, and the CRH ICU who, with their caring, kindness and compassion, helped Mom and our families, make Moms transition just a little less painful. We cannot thank you enough for all you do every day, you all are truly forever angels. Christina Roberts RN with Lethbridge Home Care and Dr. Justin Steed for your help and compassion. We greatly appreciate everything that you have done for Mom.

At Mom’s request, there will be no formal funeral, but we will celebrate Mom’s life in the spring with family and friends, at which time she will be laid to rest with her Father in the Coaldale Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made in memory to the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation ICU Fund.

Our world got a little darker with the recent passing of a bright light. Ken will be forever loved and missed by his wife Alice of 66 years, children Shane (Bev) Jaffary and Darlene (Hal) Chambers. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, five great grandchildren, sister Marion Bourne of Edmonton, sister-in-laws Jean Hankins of Ponoka, Laverne (Victor) Kaupp of Lethbridge, and many nieces and nephews. Ken grew up in Whiskey Gap and has always treasured the foothills and prairie lands of Southern Alberta. His spirit always held strong with the cowboy way, still following his love of professional and amateur rodeo, cowboy poetry, and country music. Ken and Alice loved traveling with their RV, the highlights being two trips to Alaska and many winter trips to Arizona. They moved from Southern Alberta to Salmon Arm, BC to enjoy the mountains, lakes, and family. Ken touched the hearts of many people and had a large circle of friends. WILLIAMS

June 30, 1938 – November 16, 2019

RODGER GORDON WILLIAMS passed away after a valiant effort for life at St. Michael’s Health Centre on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at the age of 81 years.

Rodger is survived by his son, Brett N. Williams, and his daughter, Vanessa L. Williams. He was an only child but over his lifetime he developed his own ‘sibling’ ties; his friends from far and nearby are Evelyn A. Maupin (USA), Dave & Dee Dee Nishe and Richard Squirres.

He was predeceased by his father, Gordon N. Williams, and his mother, Gean M. Cazimer Williams.

Rodger loved to travel, most commonly to Wendover, Nevada. His friends often called him by his nickname—Big Rodge. His courage, spirit, and sense of humour were with him right until the end. People used to say that he had a wonderful personality and was full of laughter and the joy of life. Rodger worked for the Corps of Commissionaires on a part-time basis until he could no longer walk. He frequented the Lethbridge Casino and loved to meet fellow friends there for morning coffee—and to get that five-dollar senior’s breakfast deal.

ERICKSON

We regret to announce the death of William Reed Erickson of Lethbridge, Alberta, on November 23, 2019, in Taber Alberta. He was 96 years of age at the time of his passing. He is survived by his son Ross Erickson of Boise Idaho, and daughters Jan Mason (Mark) of Austin Texas and Val Walker (Keith) of Medicine Hat Alberta. Reed had 14 grandchildren and many great- grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Doris and his oldest son Brian. Reed was one of eight children born to Alif Dehlin and Ruby Stevens Erickson. He was born just outside of Raymond, Alberta, but spent most of his childhood and youth in Stirling. He is survived by his youngest sister, Roberta. He completed teacher training and his Bachelor of Education at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, and a Master’s Degree at the University of Montana at Missoula. He met his wife-to-be, Doris, in Raymond, and moved early in their married life to Lethbridge. A teacher and school administrator in Lethbridge and Southern Alberta for all his working life, Reed was also in many respects the “parent” of countless young men and women who were his students and responsibility at school. He taught first at a single-room school at Manyberries, then in Raymond, and, finally, for many years at Hamilton Junior High School and the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute. He concluded his professional career as the Principal of the LCI. It was rare to go out in Lethbridge without meeting someone who had been influenced by him or had been his student. He was held in the highest regard by all who knew him as a teacher. As a youth and young adult, Reed was a consummate athlete—excelling in basketball and baseball. He was a starter for the University of Alberta Golden Bears in his college years. Reed also loved music. A gifted saxophonist, he was a member for many years of various dance bands which performed around Southern Alberta, more particularly the Ernie Block Orchestra. At various times he was also an avid curler, fisherman and loved to watch high school sports. With several of his brothers, he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, spending most of his enlistment as a Flying Officer. He was the recipient of several medals for his armed forces service. Reed was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many capacities including choir director, scoutmaster, teacher, Bishop and as a member of the Lethbridge East Stake Presidency. He and his wife, Doris, served a mission in the Manila Philippines Temple and, for many years, were workers in the Alberta Temple in Cardston. He was a wonderful husband and father, always caring and considerate of his wife, Doris, and involved in the lives of his children. He was a fantastic grandfather, so much so that more than a few grandsons and great-grandsons bear one or the other of his names. In the summer of 2006 Reed and Doris moved to Martha’s House, leaving their home of more than 55 years. After Doris’ passing and as his health declined, Reed moved to Linden View in Taber, Alberta. Reed was proud of all his children but particularly close to Val in the later years of his life as she placed his care and well-being as a priority in her life. He was a loving man who delighted in his family. He was a great example for all who were lucky enough to know him. We will always miss his amazing memory and sharp wit. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m., on Monday, December 2, 2019 at Christensen Salmon Generations Funeral Home, 703-13th St. North, Lethbridge Alberta. Friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Sunday, December 2 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. or Monday December 1 from 10:00 – 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.

McALLINDON

MEL McALLINDON passed away on Monday, November 25, 2019 at St. Michael’s Palliative Care Centre after a long battle with cancer, surpassing all timelines given to him.

Mel was born in Montréal, QC on December 16, 1939 to James & Mary McAllindon, the youngest of nine children. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife, Helen; his three children, David (Yordanos) of Dartmouth, NS, Brenda (Steve) Dudas of Lethbridge, Wendy (Fergus) Lynch of Red Deer; and seven grandchildren, Dylan & Maris McAllindon, Ty & Blake Dudas, and Kate, Declan & Emmett Lynch; his sister, Dorothy, of Brantford, ON, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Ed, Kathleen, Robert, Veronica, Rita, Patricia and Joan.

Mel received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Windsor majoring in Physics and Chemistry, and received his teaching certificate from the Ontario Teachers’ College. He spent the first three years of his teaching career in Nigeria where he taught Physics and married his soulmate, Helen. Three years later, Mel received a posting to Uganda with Canadian International Development Agency where he taught Physics for another three years; however, political disruption brought the family back to Canada.

After spending a year at the University of Alberta to finish his B.Ed., Mel accepted a position at Catholic Central High School in 1973 where he taught mostly Physics for the next 32 years. He organized graduation events, coached badminton and served as timekeeper at football games for many years. He was instrumental in establishing Holy Spirit ATA Local #5 and served as its first president for many years. When a new parish was given the go-ahead for West Lethbridge, he was involved in negotiating the land swap for the site of St. Martha’s Church and the arrangement with the dental clinic that now shares the property. That facilitated fundraising efforts and the new church opened in 1994. He also served as the chair of its first parish council for a number of years until ill health caused him to reduce his activities.

Retirement meant more time to spend on sports activities. There was continuous rivalry with the older grandkids on the golf course, ski hill, tennis court and bowling alley. Papa spent many hours with the younger grandkids in swimming pools, and playing board games, Uno, and mini sticks in the hallways and the driveway. He also enjoyed many wonderful travel adventures, many of them with travelling companions, the Muellers, covering much of the USA and Europe, the Panama Canal, Lebanon, Jordan, the Baltic countries, and New Zealand.

A Prayer Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB on Thursday, November 28, 2019 at 7:00 P.M. with Deacon Michael Pollard officiating.

WAGNER

DEACON RAYMOND WAGNER, beloved husband of Ellen Wagner, passed away suddenly at home with his loving wife of 54 years by his side, on Monday, November 25, 2019 at the age of 74 years.

Besides his loving wife, Ellen, Raymond is survived by three children: Gerald (Tracy); Cheryl Ann (Rick); Christine (Kevin); 21 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; as well as numerous sisters, brothers, in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Raymond’s love did not discriminate as he was always willing to help anyone. He did not have the word ‘no’ in his vocabulary.

He was passionate about his wife, his family, his work, his community yet his greatest love was for the Lord. The love dad had for mom was incredible as she was his everything and he was hers. Together they were great examples of faith in a God that walked with them in every part of their lives.

He loved spending time with his family while hunting, boating, camping, and fishing. He touched the lives of many others while serving His Lord, he was truly a fisher of men. He will be deeply and sorrowfully missed by everyone who knew him.

Jean had a happy childhood, growing up in Cardston with her older brother Bruce and surrounded by her many uncles, aunts and cousins. Family was so important to her and she truly loved her Lee/Jensen heritage.
Jean attended college in Edmonton, where she received her teaching certificate and began teaching school in Glenwood. In the fall of 1957, she decided to go to Brigham Young University to further her education. On the way to Provo, Utah, her dad had a heart attack and passed away. This was a very sad time in her life and she returned home to be a support to her mom. She returned to teaching for the year and then went to Brigham Young University in the fall where she met and fell in love with Junior.
Jean married Junior on July 22, 1959 in the Cardston Alberta Temple. They made their home in Utah for the first five years of their marriage where their first three children were born. In 1964, they moved to Barnwell where three more children were born to complete their family. Jean taught school in Barnwell for two years and then continued as a substitute teacher for the remainder of her career. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed serving a mission with JC in Ogden, Utah.
Jean had a great love for Waterton, working there and attending dances when she was young. It was one of her favorite places to spend time with Junior and the family camping, hiking and fishing. In her later years she taught several of her grandkids to ride a bike while enjoying Waterton with her whole family.
Jean was a very hard worker who sacrificed to support Junior and her children in whatever they did. She loved to quilt and made every one of her grandchildren a quilt when they were born. Bringing happiness to her grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her so much delight. Her posterity will remember that a kiss on Grandma’s cheek was always followed by a joyful, “I love it, I love it, I love it!”.
Jean’s family would like to thank all of her caregivers at the Clearview Lodge in Taber and the Quail Meadow Assisted Living in North Ogden, Utah who have assisted with her care.

BRYAN HARRIS

March 1, 1942 – December 1, 2019

Season Four of the “Life of Bryan Harris” concluded on December 1st, 2019 to really good reviews! Season One started off a little slow on March 1st 1942 when Bryan was born but got more interesting in Season two when he first experienced international travel in 1961 as an LDS Missionary in the storied country of France. Season Three started in 1964 where he quietly conducted the highs, lows, and steady notes of the newly released “Life’s Opera” performed by his beautiful wife Ann with a supporting cast of five young actors: Steven, Lisa, Kerry, Wendy and Barbara. Season Four was the most compelling as he maneuvered the peaks and valleys of life with multiple endeavours settling on the undulating Prairies of Taber, Alberta where his family’s farmland was now clothed by him in the silent power of the crops of his day. Bryan appeared to dominate no scene yet this gentle giant drew all eyes; then smiles and a familiar peace that comes from someone who can protect when necessary and comfort with grace when it is required. He loved humour and, had the script have allowed it, more would have known he was a great thinker, writer and poet. Always drawn to the theatre, movies became a destination he took all he loved on and also showed that, as no respecter of persons, he could shake a popcorn bag that left you feeling like you were sitting in D-Box! He was a faithful man and a humble servant who lead by example. Throughout the entirety of his life he was a firm and unshakable member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was loved and adored by his children, grandchildren, and all who knew him. He was a great supporting actor who stood behind many successes who will carry on his legacy in this life. He was a true man filled with love, kindness, gentleness, and a steady resolve to do good, he was a “Man for all Seasons”. Bryan’s Family Includes: Wife: Ann Harris Children: Steven (Mona) Harris Lisa (Kevin) Rodgers Kerry (Kevin) Cameron Wendy Harris Barbara (John) Brosius 16 Grandchildren – 6 Great Grandchildren Siblings: Marion (Mindy) Harris (Deceased) Karen (David) Gibbs Leanne (Walter) Siemens David (Lisa) Harris And numerous Nieces and Nephews Meet with the Family Wednesday, December 4, 2019 from 7:00pm – 8:00pm at the Taber LDS Stake center. Funeral Thursday, December 5, 2019 at the Taber LDS Stake center. Meet with the family 10:00 am – 10:45 am. Funeral at 11:00 am

He hosted many outstanding Canadian authors in Lethbridge and often made arrangements to send them to small or remote schools and libraries that would not otherwise have had an opportunity to interact with a “real author” Richard is survived by his wife, Alice; his sister Wendy (Derek) Baron and their children Cam and Ryan; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Bev and Ed Potter; his niece Cathy Burke and her children Jillian (Jarett) and Ethan; and his nephew Trevor Potter (Becky Eckert) and their children Sophie and Naomi. TANAKA

TOSHIKO TANAKA died December 2, 2019 after a brief illness. Born November 22, 1918, she had just celebrated her 101st birthday.

She was predeceased by her husband Genye “Gene.” She is survived by her six children: Tomiye “Tammy” Tanaka of New York City, Eichi (Betty) Tanaka of Lethbridge; Masaye Tanaka of Calgary; David (Linda) Tanaka, Dorene Gordon and Terry Tanaka, all of Lethbridge; five grandchildren (Darcee Richardson, Kelly (Jeanne) Tanaka, Nikki Gordon, Dionne Gordon, Tracey (Ron) Parent; six great grandchildren (Anthony Richardson, Kristen Richardson, Victoria (Curtis) Doeve, Kynan Gordon, Kaiden Tanaka, Dylan Tanaka) and two great-great grandchildren (Drea Doeve, Mia Doeve). She was predeceased by siblings Shoji Koyata, Natsuko Sawada, Minoru Koyata and Hikoza Koyata and is survived by three siblings; Takeshi “Ted” Koyata of Lethbridge; Fumiko Sekiya of Edmonton and Isamu “Sam” Koyata of Toronto; and many nieces and nephews.

Toshiko’s parents, Takejiro and Isa Koyata, immigrated to Alberta from Japan in the early 1900s and homesteaded along the Milk River Ridge south of Raymond, Alberta. Toshiko was born there, the oldest of nine Koyata children. She attended public school at Mammoth, at two-room school on the prairies. In later years she completed her high school education.

When Toshiko was 17 she was working as a cook for a threshing crew when one of the young workers caught her eye. That young man, Genye “Gene” Tanaka, would become her husband and partner for life. They were married and raised six children. In the early 1960s the Tanakas moved to Lethbridge and Toshiko joined the urban workforce. She became a diet clerk with the Lethbridge Municipal Hospital, a position she held until her retirement.

Growing up when the western prairies were still new, Toshiko developed an independent and optimistic spirit, traits she held all her life and something she tried to pass on to her children. As a child of Japanese immigrants, she always managed to hold in perfect balance her love of Canadian lifestyle and her respect for Japanese traditions. For many years she demonstrated a little-known Japanese artform called bonseki (sand painting) during Heritage Days and at the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, she performed traditional Japanese dancing and was a member of the Momiji Dance Group in Lethbridge, and created Japanese flower arrangements (Ikebana) for the Nikka Yuko pavilion for many years.

Toshiko was a member of the Southern Alberta Writers’ Workshop in the 1990s and her stories of life on the prairies appear in the published volume Prairie Patchwork Two. She also wrote a series of articles on the life of Japanese-Canadians in southern Alberta for Toronto-based Japanese Canadian newspapers. She was also on the organizing committee for Nishiki, a book documenting the history of the Japanese-Canadian experience in Southern Alberta.

Funeral Services will be held Friday December 6, 2019 at 11:00 am at the BUDDHIST TEMPLE OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA, with family visitation beginning at 10:00 am. Koden is respectfully declined.

Toshiko’s family would like to thank everyone at Garden View Lodge for making her final years rich, comfortable and safe. They would also like to thank the staff in 4C wing at Chinook Regional Hospital and St. Michael’s Health Centre for their kindness during Toshiko’s last few days; and to Salmon and Sons Funeral Home for their help in making final arrangements.

A beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she will be dearly missed by her devoted husband of 71 years, Theron, her five loving children, Don (Susan), Drew (Valerie), Craig (Sharon), Scott (Lisa) and Tana (Jerry Buss), her foster daughter, Diana Baptiste, her 19 grandchildren, her 46 great- grandchildren, her sister Kae Jolley, her brother Jack, her sisters-in-law Dorothy Francis, Carol Francis, Joan Francis, Venice Harris, Elna Hall and Joy Chatterton, and many other extended-family members. Born (in 1924) and raised in Taber, Alberta, Delores was the oldest daughter of Edwin and Evaline Francis, with whom she is now reunited. She has also rejoined her sister Jean, her brothers Howard, Doug, Rell, Dean, Ron, Albert and Keith, and her daughter-in-law Marci. World War II interrupted her dream to attend Brigham Young University, so she went to normal school in Calgary to become a teacher. She taught school at Fawcett, Vauxhall and Cranford (where she was also the principal). She continued to teach throughout her life as a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. After the War, realizing her dream, Delores attended BYU, where she studied voice and piano, graduating with a B.A. in music. At her graduation, she received the Gold Music Award, as outstanding female vocalist. A gifted soprano, she delighted audiences, and continued in her love of singing and music, with her vocal performances at BYU, Lethbridge Musical Theatre, other choirs and ensembles, and numerous solo performances. A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Delores loved to serve in the Relief Society and other Church organizations, where she held a variety of callings over the years. Highlights of her church service were the 18-month mission that she and Theron fulfilled in Austria in 1990-92, and their service for many years as ordinance workers in the Cardston Alberta Temple. At BYU she was a member of the Lambda Delta Sigma sorority. Delores honoured her pioneer heritage and was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the family at Christensen Salmon Generations Funeral Home, 703 – 13 Street North, Lethbridge on Thursday, December 5, 2019, between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and at the church the next day, Friday, December 6, 2019, between 10:00 a.m. and 10:40 a.m., before the funeral service.

She was predeceased by siblings Shoji Koyata, Natsuko Sawada, Mae Sasaki, Minoru Koyata and Hikoza Koyata and is survived by three siblings; Takeshi “Ted” Koyata of Lethbridge; Fumiko Sekiya of Edmonton and Isamu “Sam” Koyata of Toronto; and many nieces and nephews.

NOBLE

BRYAN ANDREW NOBLE, beloved husband of Carol Noble, of Nobleford, passed away at home, on Sunday, December 1, 2019 at the age of 68 years.

It has been a great joy to be with Bryan in the playground of life.

Bryan was born July 1, 1951 in Lethbridge AB, to his beloved parents Lillian and Gerald Noble, the youngest sibling of Eleanor Lind and Charles Noble, who were not only family but lifelong friends and trusted confidants.

Bryan and Carol, the love of his life, met at 14 years of age and journeyed throughout this lifetime together. Side by side they traveled Mexico in a VW van, through the Rocky Mountains on his Triumph motorcycles, and on foot in Waterton Lakes National Park and the West Coast Trail.

In the late 1970’s in pursuit of higher education, he moved to Vancouver BC where he received an Honours English degree from Simon Fraser University. He had a vast understanding of Greek mythology, Irish playwrights, German poets and a lifelong interest in literature.

After receiving his degree, he moved back to Alberta and chose to begin a career in farming on the land that he and his brother Charles purchased east of Barons AB. Inheriting a passion for farming and conservation of the land from his grandfather and father, Bryan practiced continuous cropping and zero tillage for over 30 years.

Bryan’s love for and pride in his children was unquestionable and always clearly expressed. This love and pride were reciprocated by his children Jayne Baun (Justin), Andrea Noble and Michael Noble (Jessica) and grandchildren Betty Baun, Bowin Baun and Pace Noble. Pets, especially dogs, were also considered an important part of the family. Bryan never met a dog he didn’t like.

Sports and fitness played a huge role in Bryan’s life. He played baseball, hockey, basketball, skied, hiked, weight lifted and ran. He coached little league baseball in Barons and shared this love of sports with the youth. Ever the proponent for the underdog he was a faithful lifelong Toronto Maple Leafs fan. Go Leafs Go!

Bryan loved to ride his motorcycles, especially enjoying annual rides with friends and family at Nelson’s Triumph Rat Raid where he was proud to be accepted as a member of the “Blue Meanies International”.

Bryan was excited for the future, collecting British motorcycles from the past and planning new adventures with Carol, joyfully mentoring the next generation as they took leadership roles on the farm, and continuing his ever supportive role as the lives of his children and grandchildren unfolded.

His legacy will be the seeds of kindness he sowed that will now germinate and expand into a bountiful eternal harvest of love in all our hearts.

A Celebration of Bryan’s life will be held at the NOBLEFORD COMMUNITY COMPLEX (The Blue Whale), 122 Kipp Street, Nobleford, AB, on Saturday, December 7, 2019 from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.

HILLSTEAD

It is with great sadness and grief that we announce the sudden passing of FERN HILLSTEAD at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge on Tuesday, November 26th, 2019, at the age of 76 years.

Fern is survived by Morris, her loving husband of 59 years, her daughters, Kelly Mantler of Lethbridge, Barbara (Bote) Miedema of Abbotsford, and Charlotte Bennett of Calgary; grandchildren and great-grandchildren Robin Bullock, Matt (Kaylie) Mantler and Aaliyah, Danelle Mantler and Seirah, Haley (Aaron) Wierenga and Patrick, Addison and Tanner. She also leaves to mourn, her sisters, Laura Larsen and LouVonne Skjerdal and many in-laws, nieces, and nephews – all special but too numerous to list. Fern was predeceased by her parents, Art and Cora Matters, in-laws Ted and Bessie Hillstead, twin sister Faye Friedrichsen, brother Lloyd Matters, sister Lorraine Neilsen, and other special family members.

Fern was born in Midale, Saskatchewan on October 4, 1943, just a minute or two before her twin sister, Faye, with whom she did everything. When Fern was nine, she suffered severe burns and had to be away from her family for months. She always said that separation from her twin was almost more agonizing than her injuries. The twins continued to do everything together and on July 23, 1960, they were married in a double ceremony. Fern and Morris and Faye and Pete had three children each within a five year period and we all spent much time together. Fern and Morris were in the oilfield service business and never did a young couple work harder. As Fern and Morris and the girls followed the opportunities in the oil field, they were able to live in quite a few places and became expert movers. Fern was a compassionate woman who always championed the underdog, pursued fairness to an exact degree and loved and lived for her family. Nana was often found playing with her grandchildren in the pantry with a flashlight, and later as technology advanced, with her great-grandchildren in the closet with an IPad. Nana always made sure everyone had the treats they liked at family gatherings and loved spending time with each of us.

The past three years have been hard on mom’s health with injuries, illness, and loss of stamina. Mom frequently expressed that she couldn’t have asked for any better care than what Morris provided to her every day and she was grateful to him for making her life easier. We thank the doctors and staff at the CRH ER and attending Paramedics for the excellent care and service provided to this much-loved mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Over the past three years we have been to the ER many times and always found the help and support we and mom needed.

A celebration of Fern’s life will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta, on Saturday, December 14th at 11:00 A.M., with Rev. Pauline Bell officiating. A time of fellowship & refreshments will follow. A private interment will be held at Mountain View Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please feel free to contribute to a charity of your choice in Fern’s memory.
