NAGY

THOMAS “TOM” R. NAGY passed away peacefully at St. Michael’s Health Centre on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at the age of 88 years.

Tom is survived by his son, Dirk (Janice) Nagy, his daughter, Karen Olson and his many grandchildren, great- grandchildren, cousins and extended family.

He was predeceased by his wife, Louise, his parents, Steve & Mae, his brother, Ronald and his son, Eric.

Tom was born on October 4, 1931 in Chicago, IL. He was a man who lived life his way; at times unconventional, but always with passion. At a young age, he moved from Chicago to Harmon Valley, AB where he worked on the family farm and created numerous lifelong friendships.

He married Louise at the age of 44 years and cared for her three children as his own—something that positively impacted him beyond expectation. As a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, cousin and friend, Tom’s understated love for his family created many undeniable bonds which remained evident until his peaceful passing.

Our tears still flow in appreciation for the unconditional love he provided and the void that now exists in our lives. A life so very well lived.

At Tom’s request, there will be no formal funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a local charity of one’s choice.

BERRY

GLEN H. BERRY, of Lethbridge, sadly passed away at the Foothills Medical Centre on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at the age of 80 years.

Glen is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Shirley and his three children, Jody (Tony) of Langley BC, Ryan (Karly) of Kimberley BC, and Chris (Lori) of Lethbridge and grandchildren Justin (Jamie), Ethan, Riley, Spencer, Dreyton, Jaimie Alex, Hunter and Samantha as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brothers Doug (Diana) and Bob (Danielle). Glen was predeceased by his parents Alan and Doris Berry, his daughter Shelley and his brother Peter (Sharee).

Glen began his career in policing in 1960 with the Lethbridge Police Service and continued with the Calgary Police Service in 1967 until his retirement in 1985, serving in several divisions to broaden his knowledge. Notably being the first K9 handler in Lethbridge.

After retiring, Glen and Shirley moved to Nanaimo, BC but moved back to Calgary after seven years. Once in Calgary, they decided to go back to their roots and the beginning of their story, Lethbridge.

Glen had a strong love for photography, traveling as far as Nova Scotia to capture the lighthouses. He took photos for his alma mater, LCI, and was the photographer for many Powwows and rodeos in the Lethbridge area.

Glen was the friend you wanted to have. Once you met him, he was your friend for life. He was both the voice of reason and the devil’s advocate all in one – it was the policeman in him looking at things from all directions.

Glen will live on forever through those that knew and loved him and in our hearts.

As he would say, “I left the field with no regrets” and “Just tell everyone – the guy had fun”. And indeed, he did.

A Memorial Service will be held at MCKILLOP UNITED CHURCH, 2329 – 15 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, on Monday, November 4, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Aaron Moore officiating.

LYNN

CAROLYN LYNN, of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at the Edith Cavell Care Centre on Sunday, October 27, 2019 at the age of 80 years.

She is survived by her four daughters: Lorna (Bill) Lazaruk, Kathy Lynn, Eileen (Ian) Colquhoun and Carla (Murray) Parenteau; four grandchildren: Jamie (Dannielle) Lazaruk, Kara (Evan) Beaton, Phoebe Colquhoun, Rory Colquhoun and adopted grandson Micheal Lazaruk. She is also survived by four great- grandchildren Harlynn and Journee Lazaruk and Nova and Veda Beaton. She is also survived by her brother Cameron (Maureen) Laing and sister Elaine (Ian) Sunderland and numerous nieces and nephews.

Carolyn was predeceased by her parents and husband John.

Born on October 21, 1939 to parents Blanche and William Laing in Lethbridge – Carolyn graduated from Lethbridge Collegiate Institute and went on to obtain her teaching certificate in Calgary. Carolyn married John Lynn in 1959 and they would have four daughters – Lorna, Kathy, Eileen and Carla. Carolyn was a proud stay-at-home mom until Carla started school when she then returned to work as a school teacher and later teachers’ assistant for the Catholic Separate School System. Carolyn enjoyed her work in the schools and was especially proud when she taught children whose parents she knew when they were growing up. Carolyn also enjoyed the comradery of the teaching staff and the “Birthday Club” dinners and coffee dates outside of school hours. In her spare time, Carolyn enjoyed working in her garden and cooking for her family including her four grandchildren who always liked to lend a helping hand.

Carolyn enjoyed travelling to visit family – her sister Elaine in Victoria, daughter Carla in Edmonton, daughter Eileen and children in Bolton, Ontario, brother Cameron in Kingston, Ontario and daughter Kathy in Florida and nine summers in California. While in California, Carolyn enjoyed the local beach every morning, walks in the Marina, special days in Malibu, trips to Disneyland and San Diego and to San Francisco and the wineries. She also visited Las Vegas where she took in the shows and even tried her hand at the slot machines. In 2009, Carolyn and Kathy enjoyed an amazing three week tour of New Zealand and Australia.

Later that year, the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease would begin to erode Carolyn’s independence and she was fortunate to have amazing neighbors’ Ila Rae and Jim and John and Todd to assist the family in maintaining her home life and yard. As the disease progressed, Donna Jo and Mary B assisted Kathy in maintaining Carolyn in her home but in the Spring of 2011, Carolyn was moved to Fairmont Extendicare where she received loving care from her primary care giver Maritza and other staff. She was later transferred to Edith Cavell Care Centre where she again received thoughtful care which was extended to her daughters during the time leading up to her death. During her time at Edith Cavell, Mrs. Van Ryan provided Carolyn companionship, reading to her and enjoying music with her. Thanks also to Dr. Cahill and associates at Family Medical Centre in Lethbridge.

FORESTELL

MICHAEL EDWARD FORESTELL, of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 25, 2019 at the age of 93 years.

Dad leaves behind seven children: Paul of Vulcan, Clair (Elaine) of Lethbridge, Brian of Didsbury, Patricia Siray (Brian) of Millarville, Mary Jane (Katryn) of Halfmoon Bay, Michele Coddington (Matt) of Sonoma and Sean (Isabelle) of Newburyport. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren who all fondly remember their Opa.

Dad was predeceased by his beloved Gunda, his wife of 63 years who passed away on January 26, 2014. Dad was also predeceased by his grandson Daniel who passed away on September 11, 2016 and his daughter-in-law Karen who passed away on July 7, 2007.

Growing up in Coniston during the Depression and World War II definitely had its challenges. Dad worked part time in the INCO mines as did nearly all the men in the community. During the war, he lost three older brothers who served in the military and a younger brother due to illness. When he was old enough to serve, Dad took a different path and went to study in the seminary at the University of Western Ontario in London.

After departing from the seminary, Michael’s friend Roman Mann invited him out to the farm in Saskatchewan to work for the summer. At the farm, Dad met the love of his life, Gunda. They were married in 1950 in Saskatoon where Paul was born, and later moved to southern Ontario where Clair, Brian and Patricia were born and Dad worked for Firestone and RCA Records. In 1958, the growing family moved to Lethbridge where Mary Jane, Michele and Sean were born, and Dad started working for the Sisters of St. Martha at St. Michael’s Hospital.

In 1986, after 28 years at St. Michael’s as the Director of Finance, Dad retired. In his retirement, he continued to give back, to the community and could be found volunteering at the soup kitchen or using his finance background to take care of the books for the church. It was also a chance for Dad to satisfy his sense of adventure and interest in the world as he travelled across the country in a VW camper, and made his way to Scotland, France, Italy, Austria, Germany and Alaska to name a few.

Dad was well loved and will be missed by all who crossed his early journey. We will all remember him as a loving husband and father, his humble nature, his sense of humour, his love of travel, his love for books, his delight in playing crib with his grandchildren and his love for sharing good food and martinis with family and friends. We miss you Dad, but we’re grateful to have had such a wonderful and loving father and will always hold you in our hearts.

A Prayer Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at 7:00 P.M. with Father Nathan Siray officiating.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ST. MARTHA’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 355 Columbia Blvd. West, Lethbridge, AB on Friday, November 22, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. with Father Nathan Siray and Father William Monis concelebrating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Michael to the Covenant House Vancouver, 1302 Seymour Street, Vancouver, BC V6B 3P3 or online at covenanthousebc.org.

GRAHAM, Marlys June

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Marlys June Graham (Coates) – a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, wife and friend to all those she touched. She died on Oct 28, 2019 at the Berwick Royal Oak in Victoria, BC.

Mom was born on June 7, 1929 in Nashua, Iowa to Myrtle (Bennett) and Dale Coates. Marlys, and her twin sister Marilyn, were the youngest of seven children, originally living on the family farm and then moving into the town of Nashua. She remembers much from these years and would recount wonderful experiences from her early life.

She married James (Jim) R. Graham on January 9, 1949 and then moved to southern Alberta as the wife of a dry-land farmer. In 1962, they left the farm and moved the family to Lethbridge, then retired to Surrey BC in 1985. Jim died on Sep 13, 1999 and she lived independently since.

She is survived by her twin sister, Marilyn Myall; her three children, Jamie Torry, Sheila (Don) Strauch, and Derek Graham (Terri); grandchildren Alicia (Jon) Mossing, Tracy (Riley) Strauch, Angela (Dan) Heinrich Torry, Andrew (Lisa) Torry, Megan (Mike) Torry, Emma Graham, Sally Graham; and great-granddaughters Arianna and Isabelle Mossing and great-grandson Dante S. Torry. She has many Canadian and American relatives as well and always enjoyed hearing from them.

Mom made many friends in Warner, Lethbridge, Whitefish Montana, and then Surrey BC. Too many to name here but she cherished and had memories of everyone and loved to stay in touch. Mom and Dad enjoyed traveling and often loaded all the family into the car and drove to Nashua to enjoy memorable holidays. She loved gardening and took pride growing wonderful flowers and vegetables. She made delicious home-made buns, breads and pies. Her American English influenced her pronunciation and the family would laugh when she had to “warsh” the clothes or take a trip south to “Missoura”. She always kept a spotless home and is remembered for her abundant use of the vacuum cleaner to collect every particle of dirt. Mom enjoyed playing bridge with friends and would relish those times when she got the top score. Golf was also her passion continuing to play to 2018 when she got a hole in one at age 89. She was like the Energizer Bunny – she just kept going and going until she just couldn’t anymore.

Her last few months of life were spent with visits from all of her immediate family and many of her close friends. Many coming far distances that expressed how much she meant to them and for this we know she is so thankful. A wonderful friendship was made with Phyllis Hoffman at the Berwick Royal Oak and they had many good times together. She left this life knowing she was greatly loved and admired. Now she can rest in the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. The children will be planning a trip to Nashua in 2020 to inter her remains at the family plot.

Many thanks to Dr. Rosenberg and his staff, and the Royal Oak Berwick staff for being so helpful these past months.

We request those who wish to make a donation in Mom’s name to the Cancer Research Foundation, or any other organization doing research on brain tumors and cancer.

Condolences may be offered to the family at http://www.mccallgardens.com

HUTCHINGS, Thomas Darryl

December 30, 1938 – Deloraine, Manitoba

October 22, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

A note from Darryl:

‘Most obits are written by funeral home pros on advice of relatives to make the dearly departed appear as a saint. As a consultant, I can do better.

Laurette: Stay in Peace, hope to see you soon. To the children: John and Craig Hutchings, Guy Simon and Dana Saby, their families and other relations, you will all have a worthwhile life.

Grieve for me now, for in a year I will be long forgotten. Just a few comments. First, I am not a saint. Some people like me. Others didn’t and they made the list of people that didn’t exist. But now, all is forgiven.

As a small-town boy from Manitoba, I did pretty well. In as an office boy and out as president. Also, a couple of partnerships in international accounting and consulting firms. Did lots of other things. Could never hold a job. Too much of a rebel. Either quit or got fired. Hated to admit it in public, but I was an accountant (FCPA) and other university junk (MBA, etc.).

Always overeducated and underemployed. So much for that stuff.

Loved the outdoors: fishing; hunting; and taking a shotgun for a walk. Played billiards, bridge and golf. Did OK at these pursuits. Actually, ‘better than the average bear’. That’s enough about fun and games.

Just to add. I had a darned good life and did everything I wanted to do and have no regrets.

Now, we in the fellowship have a saying: ‘Yesterday is gone forever’. And for me, tomorrow will never come.’

Bye, Darryl.

As a family, there is of course much more that could be said but, we will reserve that for quiet conversations of fond memories.

A family ceremony will take place in Milk River, AB in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, we would much appreciate donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada (https://alzheimer.ca/en/Home), or Ducks Unlimited (https://www.ducks.ca). Condolences may be forwarded through http://www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

NESBIT

It is with the saddest of hearts that we announce the passing of our Mom, DUNELDA NESBIT, beloved wife of the late Bill Nesbit, on October 28, 2019 at Legacy Lodge in Lethbridge, AB at the age of 89 years.

She is lovingly remembered by us children, Karen Langille, Jim(Mary) Nesbit, Dallas (Char) Nesbit, all of Lethbridge and Reenie (Tim Lane) Nesbit of Morinville, AB., as well as seven grandchildren, ten great- grandchildren, one great-great- grandson and many cousins.

Mom was born to Austin and Margaret Main on April 6, 1930 in Belmont, MB, the only sibling to her brother, Melvin. She received her education in Belmont then continued her education at business college in Brandon, MB.

In 1948, while attending a dance in Ninette, MB, she met the love of her life and our dad, Bill Nesbit. They were married in December of 1949 and eventually had and raised us four children.

Our family moved to Lethbridge in 1967 and in 1968, mom started working at Automatic Electric until 1979 when her and dad returned to Manitoba to look after her parents. They eventually moved back to Lethbridge in the summer of 1983.

Mom was a very active lady whether she was involved with an organization or just volunteering for one. Knitting, baking, camping and curling, to name a few, were her favourite past times however nothing beat the time and love she spent with our family.

After dad’s passing, her life started to slow down but not her sense of humour. She moved to Legacy Lodge in January 2013 where she met and made some very special friends. She kept everyone entertained and on their toes until her passing.

Dad was well loved and will be missed by all who crossed his earthly journey.

JACOBUS JOCHEM “JAKE” GROENENBOOM

It is with gratitude for a life well-lived and a man much loved that we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather and great-grand father, JAKE GROENENBOOM at St. Therese Villa on October 31, 2019 at the age of 88 years.

Jake is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Betsie. He will be lovingly remembered by his five children: Martha (Rick) Johnson, Barb (Jim) McDonald, Rob (Linda) Groenenboom, Don (Elaine) Groenenboom and Sue (Mark) Wobick. He will also be dearly missed by his 13 grandchildren: Blake (Sarah), Brett (Michelle); Scott (Stephanie), Mike, Tyson; Nicole (Cory), Megan (Chris), Taylor (Hannah); Jed, Emily, Haley; Brynn and Carter, as well as his six great-grandchildren.

Jake was born on May 7, 1931 in Barendrecht, Netherlands. He was the eldest of 12 children who—along with their parents—immigrated to Canada in 1952. After working on several southern Alberta farms, the Groenenboom family was able to purchase their own farm in the Park Lake area.

Shortly after, Jake met the love of his life, Betsie. They married on August 27, 1960 and purchased their own farm west of Park Lake. In 1972, Jake & Betsie and their family moved to the farm west of Nobleford where they remained until 2009. Jake was a farmer, drywaller and later on in life pursued his true passion as a buyer in the cattle industry. Jake’s favorite hobby was his garden—he grew enough vegetables to feed his own family as well as a small village. He loved to sit out on a chair and watch his garden grow. With Jake’s gradual decline in health, they made the decision to move to Lethbridge. Jake was moved to St. Therese Villa in 2013 where he was lovingly cared for until his passing.

Jake could always be found seated in the front row of the many auction marts he attended. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, travelling, playing cards, and sitting in the backyard barbecuing that always perfect steak. Jake was very proud of his family and loved spending time with them. His grandchildren always put a big smile on his face.

Jake is also survived by his brother, Dan (Riet) Groenenboom, his sisters Jean deKreek, Henny Wiskerke, Ria (Joe) Fedyniak, Janny (Keith) Nugent, Truus Bolokoski, Cobie (Andrew) Oosterbroek, and Mieke (Bob) Rice, his sisters-in-law Margaret, Betty and Leny Groenenboom.

He was predeceased by his parents Huib and Marie Groenenboom, in-laws Marinus and Christina Wiskerke, his brothers Bas, Joe, and Huib Groenenboom, his brother-in-laws Marvin Bolokoski, Ad deKreek, Huib Wiskerke, and Casey Wiskerke.

A Funeral Service will be held at ST. ANDREWS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 1818 – 5 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 12:00 Noon.

Prior to the Funeral Service, Jake will be laid to rest during a Private Interment in Mountain View Cemetery.

In honour of Jake, memorial donations may be made to St. Therese Villa – Covenant Health (253 Southgate Blvd. South, Lethbridge, AB T1K 2S1).

SPITZER

1927 – 2019

SUSAN LOUISE SPITZER (née Messmer), beloved wife of the late Walter Spitzer, passed away at St. Michael’s Health Centre due to complications from a stroke on Thursday, October 31, 2019 at the age of 92 years.

Susan is survived by her children: Sharon (John) Davis, Robert (Myra) Spitzer, Ronald (Emma) Spitzer and Barbara (Ronald) Angyal; nine grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren; sister Barb Fisher of Calgary and brother Joe (Shirley) Messmer of Mississauga, Ontario as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her loving husband Walter, Susan was predeceased by her daughter Loralie, parents Michael and Barbara, sisters Litvena Peters and Mary Tittle, four brothers Dominick, Leo, Lawrence and Alphonse Messmer and many sisters and brothers-in-law.

Susan was born in Senate, Saskatchewan on January 28, 1927 to Michael and Barbara Messmer. She was the sixth of nine children and attended elementary school in Senate and Consul, completing Grade 12 in Foremost, Alberta. After her schooling, she began working as an uncertified nursing aid at St. Michael’s Hospital in Lethbridge. She met her future husband Walter at a dance and they were married on October 28, 1946. They had celebrated 52 years together before Walter passed on September 11, 1999.

Susan and Walter settled in north Lethbridge and raised five children. Susan worked various places, including Crystal Dairy, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Canada Safeway, and when Walter suffered a brain aneurysm in 1970, she went back to school, taking Secretarial Training at Henderson Business College. After college, she was employed at Empress Foods, working for 11 years. She retired to spend more time with Walter camping, fishing and travelling (Las Vegas and Wendover) before Walter became wheelchair bound. They sold the house in 1999 and moved to Grandview Condominiums. In 2012 when Susan felt she needed more assistance with daily living, she moved to Black Rock Terrace where she made many new friends.

Susan was a devout Catholic and a life member of the CWL. She was a terrific cook and could make the food stretch to feed all the hungry mouths at the supper table. She’ll be remembered for her spudnuts, cream puffs, cottage cheese perogies, and goose with rice dressing. In the winter she even enjoyed barbequing hamburgers on the deck for their poodle Benji. Susan loved to shoot darts and won many trophies. She always had a Harlequin book on her end table and loved to play crib and bingo with her friends at Blackrock. Fridays became her favorite day as her daughter Barb would pick her up from her apartment and they’d do shopping, lunch, and trips to the casino. Having her nails professionally done was also a highlight of Susan’s month. She loved being pampered.

The family would like to thank the health professionals at Chinook Regional Hospital, Milk River Long Term Care and St. Michael’s Health Centre Long Term Care for making Mom comfortable over the past nine months. We are forever grateful for the kindness shown to her.

POIRIER

Oct. 2, 1947 – Nov. 5, 2019

PENNY ANN LYNN POIRIER, beloved spouse of Larry Wyrostok of Lethbridge, passed away at St. Therese Villa on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at the age of 72 years.

Penny is survived by her partner of 25 years, Larry Wyrostok, her three children, Vanessa Freel, Kirby (Beth) Magierowski and Tiffany (Rory) O’Brien, as well as her special grandchildren, Zachary Freel, Lola & Harvey O’Brien and Lewis Magierowski. She is also survived by her brother, Dale Poirier, her sister-in-law, Mary Poirier and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Thelma Josephine & Albert Joseph Poirier and her loving brother, Calvin Poirier.

She and Larry shared a vibrant home for their seven spoiled fur babies, Hooper, Radar, Maggie, Rambo, Columbo, Mojo & Willow and many more on their babysitting schedule.

Penny was born in Fernie, BC. As the middle and wild child between her two brothers, she always kept life exciting for Nan. In 1957, she and her family moved to Lethbridge where Penny came to meet many special friends. Eventually, she raised her three children with all her strength and unconditional love. The impact she had on her children has left an irreplaceable void in their hearts.

Penny worked hard her entire life, managing Orange Julius and cleaning houses after work to ensure her kids had everything. She was loved by all mall staff and mentored many young girls at the start of their working careers.

Two things Penny loved more than life itself were her grandchildren and her dogs—everything took a backseat to them.

Penny had a deep and compassionate love for all animals. She spent many hours raising funds for rescues and the Humane Society and always carried dog treats in her car and purse. She could be found handing them out to dogs in cars, homeless people with dogs and dogs at her hairdresser. Each time she went to the Humane Society, Larry was scared that they would have another “baby”.

Penny suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for nearly three years—a short time for a bighearted girl. Her family always kept her dignity and she never went a day without love.

She will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, fur babies, special friends and all else who knew her. She will especially be missed by her beloved Larry, who was her support, patience and love until her very last breath. We are comforted by knowing that she is in a place filled with all her dogs and many more puppy kisses.

A Celebration of Penny’s Life will be held at ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION BRANCH no. 4, 324 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB on Wednesday, November 13, 2019 from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., with Words of Remembrance at 2:30 P.M.

In memory of Penny, the family kindly asks for those attending the service to bring an unwrapped dog toy or treat to be donated to the Lethbridge Humane Society and various dog rescues.

The family extends many special thanks to the care staff of St. Therese Villa and the many friends—with extra love to Cynthia and Karen—who helped with her journey throughout the past couple of years.

BAILEY

It seems disingenuous to distill the entirety of a life down to so few written words, and what a life it was. From humble beginnings in Flin Flon, Manitoba, to stock car racing in Calgary. From long haul trucking to business ownership and everything in between. It seemed there was nothing he couldn’t do and couldn’t fix, mechanical or otherwise, as long as it was made before the 2000s. And though he began hundreds of projects, never finishing any of them, he was never too busy to stop what he was doing if someone needed help, family or otherwise. LAWRENCE BLAINE BAILEY passed away the evening of November 5, 2019, my father, a man who loved his wife and children, now gone, will never be forgotten.

At Lawrence’s request, no funeral service will be held.

GILBORN

STEWART GERALD GILBORN, born March 23, 1942, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge on Nov 2, 2019 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He is survived by his daughter LaRae (Wayne) Murphy of Duchess, grandchildren, Brett, Kasey, Leah (Caleb), daughter-in-law Karen Gilborn, grandchildren, Madison, Shelby, Jonathon of Duchess, sister-in-law Neva (Robert) McNab of Lethbridge, sister Beryl Sudo (Bob), brothers Garry Gilborn (Diane), Rick Gilborn, (Ilene), Brian Gilborn, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Gayla, son Layne, parents Dan and Eva.

My feisty father lived a full life, married 52 years to his greatest love, Gayla. When mom passed away in 2016, this left an unimaginable and at times unbearable hole in his heart. Friends and family visiting was his salvation. He had many lasting, loyal friendships, people who kept in touch over time and great distances as he was a great conversationalist, with endless funny sayings and stories we will always cherish.

Dad was an avid sports guy; fastball, fishing, and curling kept him active and connected socially. Summers were meant for camping with extended family, Lake 5 being a favorite. Golfing in Palm Springs provided a winter break. He reminisced often about his basketball days growing up in Coutts; perhaps this is why he chose a career teaching Phys Ed, leaving a better paying job at Lethbridge Brewery to return to University. Supporting his young wife and two children while at school fulltime, was not easy. His work ethic and commitment to both: admirable.

His teaching career spanned 31 years, with many moves and a final stint at University to get his Masters, settling in Brooks in 1979 as Principal of the new Griffin Park School. Our home was the focus of many staff parties and family get-togethers; he could whip up an excellent prime rib and French onion soup! He had a huge heart when it came to youth, none being more important than his own children and later grandchildren. Griffin Park became the hub of fundraising efforts for the Children’s Dreams Foundation. He was so proud of Brooks and the surrounding community for their generous support of these auctions. Always community-minded, Dad was a long time Kinsmen member, serving on City Council and – from the look of his resume – Chaired and Directed everything. He supported many local fundraisers, especially Ducks Unlimited, as he loved pheasant hunting.

Dad retired from teaching in 2000, working alongside his son Layne in house construction until relocating to Lethbridge; a move for Mom, he would say. As he slowed down, reading a book a day was not uncommon, but he always preferred a phone call or visit and looked forward to outings and company. Not one to mince words, ferociously independent to the end, and steadfast in his beliefs, he respected integrity and intelligence. He believed in giving back and pulling one’s weight. To a life well-lived, Dad – Rest easy.

A family service will be held on November 18 in Lethbridge. In lieu of flowers, dad would love it if you helped a child in need or, donations to Canadian Cancer Society, 317 – 10th St. South Lethbridge, AB T1J 2M7 – http://www.cancer.ca, would be appreciated.

David DeCon Pitcher passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 10, 2019 at the age of 94 in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. He was born on June 5, 1925 in Cardston, Alberta. He met Arvilla Smith of Champion, Alberta. Their courtship would end with one simple question and they were married on September 14, 1950 in the Cardston Alberta Temple. They are parents of five children: Jolene (Jim) Paxman of Raymond, Linda (Rus) White of Bow Island, Ken (Deb) Pitcher of Lethbridge, David (Carol) Pitcher of Orem, Utah, and Maureen (Darcy) Barfuss of Hill Spring. DeCon grew up in the Cardston area and attended school in Hill Spring where he was introduced to his life-long love of learning, singing inspirational songs, memorizing lyrics and the sport of basketball. He was drafted into the Canadian Infantry before finishing high school in 1944. He was discharged from the Infantry in 1946 and in the meanwhile completed his high school diploma during compassionate leave. He then volunteered for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on a mission among the Maori people in New Zealand. Again later after retirement, served another mission with his favorite mission companion, Arvilla, in the Adelaide Australia mission. DeCon and Arvilla dedicated their early family lives in a propane business which served a large rural area around Champion and later added a small farming business for their children to learn the benefits of concentrated work, provident living, and the value of education. DeCon’s service and life’s efforts made a difference in his community, church, and most importantly, his children and posterity. His valiant life and influence will be forever felt by 29 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. DeCon was preceded in death by Arvilla in 2008, by his parents, David Allen and Elsie May Peterson Pitcher, and all 3 older brothers and 5 sisters. We would like to express our thanks and gratitude to Dad’s many friends at the Seasons Gardens Retirement Community, where he lived and served for the last several years, and to all the doctors, nurses and care givers for his recent care at the Chinook Regional Hospital. Friends and family may meet with the family on Friday, November 15, 2019 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Christensen Salmon Generations Funeral Home, 703-13 Street N, Lethbridge or from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the funeral service being held on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Copperwood Chapel, 9 Keystone Terrace W, Lethbridge. SKRIP

STANLEY WILLIAM SKRIP passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital, on Friday, November 8, 2019 at the age of 93 years.

Stan was born on September 4, 1926. What a wonderfully rich life our father lived! Raised on a farm during the depression, he learned early on about hard work and sacrifice. When he met the love of his life in 1952, he devoted himself everyday to being a proud husband and father. My parents were married 53 years until being separated by the death of his wife, Rosemarie in 2006. My dad’s love and dedication to his family is what he will be remembered most for. Thank you dad for being there for us every day and all the wonderful experiences you gave us, for all you taught us about living a life with integrity, honestly, and humanity. You will be dearly missed forever. We can have the most peace now knowing you are finally reunited with mom.

At Stanley’s request, there will be no funeral service.
