BORGGARD

December 12, 1946 – May 5, 2019

Blaine James Borggard, beloved husband, partner and soul mate of Faye Read, passed away peacefully in Lethbridge on Sunday, May 5th, surrounded by those he loved.

Blaine’s life went full circle with his passing at St. Michaels, where his life began on December 12, 1946. He was the third child of Edith and Harold Borggard. He will lovingly be remembered and missed by Faye, daughter Angela, cherished grandchildren Logan and Maddison and siblings; Betty Mulholland (Larry) of Claresholm, Rod (Julie) of Calahoo, Marie Woodgate (Ernie) of Lethbridge, and Ross (Barb) also from Lethbridge. He is also survived by Auntie Roberta and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Blaine was raised on the family farm, three miles south of Nobleford, until his Father’s passing, when Blaine was eleven. Shortly thereafter, Edith and the children moved into Nobleford, where Blaine attended Noble Central School. Following his Graduation, Blaine enjoyed a successful career in sales. His tenure at Noble Cultivators began with welding, designing prototypes, and finally into sales where he was General Sales Manager for Western North America. When Noble Cultivators sold to Versatile, Blaine also made the move. He was selected to go to Australia to set up their Marketing Division. This was a professional highlight for Blaine.

In his semi-retirement, Blaine enjoyed a variety of pursuits. He manufactured and sold machinery parts, manufactured and sold spindles for railings, sold RVs for Field of Dreams and worked alongside Faye selling for Galko Homes. This, by necessity, needed to fit around his many Tee Times, camping and trips to Aruba, and of course, his special time with Logan and Maddison. They were priority one.

A Celebration of Blaine’s Life will be held on Friday, May 10th, 2019 at 2:00pm at SALMON AND SONS FUNERAL HOME, 433 Stubb Ross Road S (out by the airport). A private family interment will occur prior to the service.

There will be an opportunity to meet with family at the Funeral Home on Thursday, May 9th, 2019 between 5:00pm and 6:30pm.

Flowers are graciously declined, the family asks that in Blaine’s memory you take the time to enrich a child’s life, play golf with a friend, rediscover your childhood by going camping or board a flight to Aruba.

Alice Marie Jassman

May 17, 1942 – May 7, 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Mother, Alice Marie Jassman (76), of Fort Macleod, AB, on May 7, 2019. She will be sadly missed by her daughters Judy, Kathy and Lori, her grandchildren, Melissa, Chalsey, Dakota and Megan, and her great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Kenley and Jaydee. She is also survived by her sisters, Agnes, Edna Mae, Pat and Linda, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews, and is predeceased by her parents, Elsworth (‘Cap’) and Ida Russell, and her brother Allan Russell

In her younger years, our Mother loved to get all ‘dolled up’ and go dancing – she’d never pass up an opportunity to kick up her heels on the dance floor. She also loved to go camping, especially if it was a family camp-out, and was an avid Rodeo fan, taking in as many local Rodeos as she could. She also took great pride in her yard and flower beds, which she toiled endlessly in from spring to fall. Her favorite thing, however, was sitting down for a ‘mean’ game of Canasta, a card game that all members of our family were required to learn and play, and “Yes, Mom, you play like a wiener, and you are so a ‘Pile Hog’ “!

We wish to thank Dr. Beekman, the Fort Macleod Home Care Nurses, and all of the staff at the Community Support Beds (Fort Macleod) for the exemplary care given to our Mother during her

last days, as well as their compassion and support to her family during this difficult time.

A Funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, May 13, 2019 at the Trinity United Church (220-20 Street, Fort Macleod, AB). A luncheon will follow from 12:00 to 2:00 at the United Church Hall, with internment at the Granum Cemetery for immediate family only.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (200 – 325 Manning Rd. N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 9Z9) or to the Fort Macleod Community Support Beds (P.O. Box 520, Fort Macleod, AB T0L 0Z0)

Rev. Dr. Alex Lawson

1926 – 2019

The Reverend Dr. Alex Lawson, husband of Joy Lawson, passed away peacefully at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC, surrounded by his family, on April 30, 2019, at the age of 93. This vibrant Scotsman, who immigrated to Canada in 1950 to begin what became an incredible legacy of love and healing through poetic intellect, is survived by his wife Joy; his children Alexander “Sandy” (Jan), David (Chriss), Heather (Garth), Sheena, Peter and Marla; and his grandchildren Alexander, Mitch, Drew, Emily, Joshua, Iain, Keagan, Hannah, Sarah and Cameron; as well as two foster children, Doreen and Zachery. His two step-grandsons, Harley and Rowan shared in his unending love. He was predeceased by an infant son, Ian. Alex was born in Addiewell, Scotland on February 27, 1926. A lover of music, he learned the highland pipes as a young lad and after working as a blacksmith’s apprentice, went to work in the Westwood shale oil works at in 1941 at age seventeen. He made his way to “the pits” and worked as a coal miner before eventually answering an advertisement seeking highland pipers for Ogilvie’s Department store in Montreal, Canada. Alex arrived in Halifax at Pier 51 where he began a life-long love affair with Canada, his newly adopted country. He began his employment at Ogilvie’s as one of their official pipers who piped open and close the store each day. Alex soon became an icon featured weekly in the department store’s advertising. During the day he worked as an electrician in the Montreal landmark where he met Joy, the love of his life, who worked at the handkerchief counter with a conveniently “faulty” light plug. Alex joined the Air Force reserve and after a stint with the Black Watch, spend 10 years with the 401 Squadron pipe band working his way quickly to band leader. The band performed at Highland Games throughout the eastern seaboard winning accolades and awards. After his engagement to Joy, Alex began working for Bell Telephone as an installer when he heard God’s call. After their marriage at St. Mark’s United Church in Montreal on June 12, 1954, Alex entered the ministry attending Sir George Williams College then onto McGill University, where he graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Divinity. During this time Joy and Alex had Sandy then moved to Laval Ouest where David was born. The young family moved to Arundel, QC, in the Laurentian Mountains, where Alex was a student minister and Heather joined her two brothers. Alex’s first charge after Ordination into the United Church of Canada in 1963 was in Maryfield, SK where he began a prairie ministry that would last into the next millennium. It was here Sheena was born, and wee Ian blessed the family for a brief time. The family moved to Whitewood, SK in 1966. Peter and Marla became members of the family, as well as foster children Zachery and Doreen. Alex secured his first major charge at Minto United Church in Moose Jaw, SK in 1971 where he discovered his skills as a therapist and flourished as a man that would influence and change numerous lives through his application of Transactional Analysis, Senoi dream theory, gestalt therapy and his innate ability to allow people to discover healing within themselves by revisiting limiting decisions they had made at some prior point in their lives. One of his greatest achievements was to create a lay ministry that didn’t rely on professionals to care for others, but to train members of the community to share their compassionate abilities. He founded the Minto Family Life Centre that thrived during his tenure and long after. His work in Family Life Education became the subject of a National Film Board documentary. Alex brought that experience to McKillop United Church in Lethbridge, AB in 1978 where he was instrumental in creating a community of love and healing until his retirement. An odd word for Alex as he then went on to serve as interim minister at St. David’s United Church in Calgary and was seasonal minister at one of his favorite spots, Waterton United Church, where he was conferred the honor of Minister Emeritus in 2015. In 1990, Alex was bestowed an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from St. Stephen’s College in Edmonton, AB, an honor he cherished. Throughout his ministry and well into the next millennium, Alex, frequently with Joy, led tours to what he called the two Holy lands, Scotland and the Middle East, often with people he would hold close the rest of his life. They also toured the Far East and Russia. Alex and Joy moved to Victoria in 2012 and enjoyed Island living. Following a fall on ice during a winter visit to Alberta, Alex made great use of an electric scooter to make his daily runs around Victoria and continued to guest minister, baptize and officiate weddings up until the summer of 2018 at the age of 92. Some of Alex’s notable positions held were as Senator, University of Lethbridge; President, United Church of Canada Qu’Appelle Presbytery; President, United Church of Canada Southern Alberta Presbytery; Consultant to Congregations, United Church of Canada; President, Family Life Saskatchewan; Member of the Board, Canadian Association of Transactional Analysis, Author, “To Light a Penny Candle” a book of his sermons. A Celebration of Alex’s Life will be held at 2:00pm, on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00pm, on Saturday, May 11, at CENTENNIAL UNITED CHURCH, 612 David Street, Victoria, British Columbia. Flowers are gratefully declined. For those who wish, the family suggests that donations be made to INCLUSION LETHBRIDGE, 527 – 6th Street S., T1J 2E1; (403) 327-2911; jen@inclusionlethbridge.com.

Anne Matzen

June 28, 1921 – May 6, 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a very special lady—Anne Matzen. She was known to many as Auntie Anne whether you were related to her or not. Anne died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 97 at her home in Lethbridge, Alberta. She was born in Austria and came to Canada with her family when she was 9 years old where they lived on a farm just outside of Alberta Beach. She moved to Edmonton where she met her husband Julius. They were married for 21 years before his passing. Edmonton had remained her home until 1987 when she moved to Victoria, BC. She enjoyed living at the coast for the past 32 years. It was only recently that she moved home to Alberta and settled in Lethbridge. Auntie Anne was greatly loved by many and will always be remembered as a kind, thoughtful and loving woman who was very independent. She had a love and talent for gardening. Her yard was always filled with beautiful flowers and had a large vegetable plot. You could find her most days puttering in the yard and tending her plants. Friends and family could always count on a cup of tea and homemade cookies and scones when they came for a visit. Auntie Anne was the oldest child in her family, having three younger sisters, Mary Butcher (deceased), Betty Alexander (Lethbridge, AB) and Josie Corrado (Langley, BC). Never having children of her own, she had a special relationship with her nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by: Greg Curtis (Saskatoon, SK), Darrell Alexander (Lethbridge, AB), Bev Gallimore (Lethbridge, AB), Anita Stump (Salmon Arm, BC), Debbie Audet (deceased), Bonnie Nielsen (Sylvan Lake, AB), Cindy Unwin (Victoria, BC), Ray Smith (Surrey, BC), Joanne Lamont (Surrey, BC), Christine Burbank (Langley, BC) and their families. For those of you who knew Auntie Anne, take time to sit down, have a cup of tea and think of all the great memories you have. Once you have reminisced, plant a flower in your garden for her—she would have loved that. A Celebration of her Life will be held at 12:00pm, on Monday, June 3, 2019, at THE LETHBRIDGE COUNTRY CLUB, 101 Country Club Road, Lethbridge, Alberta. She will be laid to rest in Edmonton alongside her husband Julius.

Dr. Richard King-Brown

1919 – 2019

It is with the deepest sadness, but with wonderful memories, that we announce the death of Richard King-Brown on May 2, 2019. He was without a doubt the most wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather a family could have been blessed to have. Richard is survived by his three children Michael (Brenda), Robert (Jenny), and Elaine (Clair) Forestell, six grandchildren (Shannon, Erin, Tara, Megan, Lindsay, and John) and four great-grandchildren (Aiden, Ryker, Emily and Lachlan). He was predeceased by his wife Sylvia, his grandson Stephen, and his step-grandson, Michael. Richard was born in London, England, on November 12, 1919. He was a proper Cockney as he was born within the sound of Bow Bells and was always proud of the fact he was born and raised a Londoner. He enjoyed an interesting childhood growing up in south-east London where his father ran a medical practice. He had one older sister, Honor, who predeceased him in 1987. Richard received his education mainly in London and graduated from the City of London School in 1937. That same year he was accepted at St. Thomas’ Hospital Medical School in London, following in the medical footsteps of his father and grandfather. He was in medical school throughout the London Blitz and graduated in 1942. After medical school and a short internship, he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). His first few months in the RAMC were spent in an army hospital near Hull and this is when he met his future wife, Sylvia Dunn. During his four years in RAMC he saw service in Britain, Palestine, North Africa, Italy, India and the Far East, ending the war in Malaya. Before his travels to the Far East, he returned home to take a blood transfusion course and found time to get married on February 2, 1944. Leaving behind his new wife, expecting their first child, he was not to return for 18 months, arriving home on his son Michael’s first birthday in 1946. For the next six years, he did various house positions as middle and senior registrar studying internal medicine. Robert was born in 1949, and shortly after Richard obtained his MRCP qualifying him as an internist. He applied for many consultant positions in England, but it soon became evident the best way to both provide for his family and practice medicine the way he wanted was to emigrate. They chose Alberta, and in 1952 the family arrived in Picture Butte. In 1954 he joined the Campbell Clinic in Lethbridge and he practiced Internal Medicine there for the next 32 years. Elaine was born in 1956 and the family was complete. His career spanned an amazing era in medicine. He always kept up to date with the latest advances (including the first ICU in Lethbridge) and enjoyed his mix of general internal medicine with a busy consultative practice all the while making his patients feel valued and cared for. Richard also enjoyed many a summer weekend racing his Enterprise with the St. Mary’s Sailing Club and was inducted into the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame as a builder and athlete for his work in bringing the racquet sport squash into the city. He retired in 1986 after nearly 50 years in medicine. He and Sylvia spent the “Golden Years” of their retirement in Waterton Village enjoying time in Tofino, time with grandchildren, and lives filled with music and reading. He touched the lives of so many people and will be missed greatly by a whole community that remember his name fondly, and by all members of his family. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, May 17, 2019 at ST. AUGUSTINE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 411 – 11 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Canon James Robinson officiating. For those who wish, donations may be made in Richard’s name to St. Augustine’s Memorial Fund, 411, 11 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 2N9, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Les was born on March 23, 1927 in Hungary and immigrated to Canada with his parents and siblings, Frank and Velma. He was two years old and had lived in Lethbridge all his life. He never wanted to live anywhere else. Les came from humble beginnings and his parents taught him to work hard, respect everyone and always be proud of his heritage. He walked and dressed like a very proud man and left a good impression on his nephews and nieces. Les and his brother Frank were excellent pool and shuffleboard players and won many awards. Les never lost the knack as he got older. Les worked for his parents at their grocery store (Frank’s Grocery) in different areas but mostly he was the butcher for several years. He went to work at the Lethbridge Brewery, 4X Bakery and delivered bread to grocery stores. He enjoyed travelling and spending time with friends and family and had a fulfilling life with his wife Mickey until she passed away in 2000. They never had children but were very fond of their pets that kept them entertained and busy. Les liked being outdoors as well as spending time at the Senior’s Centre until his health began to slow him down. He was sociable but he also liked being at home and puttering around the house and garden. He leaves behind four nephews and two nieces and all their children; as well as two very good friends; Karen Ostrup and Roy Yonkman. He will be sorely missed. BRIERE

LUCIEN BRIERE passed away at St. Therese Villa after a valiant effort for life on Sunday, May 12, 2019, at the age of 93 years, only a few hours before his 94th birthday. Lucien is survived by his granddaughter, Pearl Linda-Marie Osit of Delta, BC and his surrogate family, the Middletons of Picture Butte, who loved him like their own. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Margaret Vance Holmes. Lucien robbed banks; he spent most of his life in prison and he was always deemed to be ‘unrehabilitable’. However, he made every effort he could to improve the quality of his life and of those around him. In prison, he would fix toys and perform as Santa during the holidays and as ‘Smiley the Clown’ whenever a smile or laugh was needed. Though he carried a criminal record, Lucien was loved dearly by his wife, Mary. The couple met at a bus stop while on probation and they connected instantly. Not long after on May 13, 1988, they were married in Victoria, BC and stayed together until her passing in 2010. He was also cherished by his granddaughter, Pearl, who was his biggest fan. Whenever he and Pearl were together, they would affectionately refer to each other as ‘#1’. They spent many hours with each other while watching their favourite show — Bonanza. Lucien was a compulsive volunteer; he was always active in community parades and he delivered newspapers for the Lethbridge Herald for over ten years. He had a unique sense of humour and quick wit which stayed with him until his final breath. He was well-loved by his wife, granddaughter, the Middletons and those who cared for him at St. Therese Villa. Pearl expresses a great thank-you to all who befriended and loved her grandpa. Happy 94th birthday, Frenchie — you were only a few hours away from it! In memory of Lucien, donations to the Last Chance Cat Ranch (www.thelastchancecatranch.com/please-donate) or St. Therese Villa (253 Southgate Blvd. South, Lethbridge, AB T1K 2S1) are gratefully appreciated.

STOTT

DONALD HERBERT STOTT was born on March 3, 1932 in Calgary, AB to Mary Abell Elves and Leonard Stott. He was 87 years young when he died on May 11, 2019.

Don grew up in Calgary and Vulcan and later lived and worked in Taber at Bodies Menswear. He also lived in Blairmore, Vancouver and Lethbridge. He worked across Western Canada in sales and in Australia for a number of years for Caterpillar Canada.

Don was a very successful entrepreneur right up to the time of his passing. He loved the travel involved with being in sales and the opportunity to meet people. After retirement from Caterpillar, he started his own business, Seal Corp, a company which dealt with tire accessories. He developed patents for a rim cleaner, tire sealant and a siping machine to use in his business. For the last year, Don operated his business successfully from his lazy boy chair at home.

Don married Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Bullock in 2004. Her family became his and he was very proud of Debbie, Murray, Jamie and Ian and all their accomplishments. Always a gentleman, Don enjoyed fine dining and driving his antique cars. He was involved in politics at the provincial level, enjoyed season tickets with the Calgary Stampeders and spending time with his wife. Betty says Don knew how to treat a woman! She valued Don as her friend, trusted companion and loving husband. Don loved his Mom, Mary, very much and treated her with respect and kindness always. Mary trained Don to be well-mannered and sharp of wit.

Don had a weakness for the finer things in life – vintage cars, fine clothes, antique furniture and especially chocolate! He loved watching sports on TV, especially if Calgary was involved. He always had a twinkle in his eye and loved teasing waitresses and Home Care nurses! He was a well-spoken and intelligent man and very successful in all his business ventures.

Don had a car accident in early 2018 that led to a broken hip and the subsequent loss of his life on the road. He loved church and was recently baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He died at home and will be lovingly remembered by family and friends.

A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday May 21st, 2019 at 11:00am, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, LETHBRIDGE STAKE CENTRE, 2410 28 Street South, Lethbridge.

Friends are welcome to meet with the family prior to the Service from 10:00 to 10:45am.

Marlene Augusta Miller

1942 – 2019

Marlene Augusta Miller of Coaldale, beloved wife, partner and best friend of Keith Miller, passed away at the age of 76 surrounded by love on May 17, 2019, on the 50th anniversary of their marriage. Marlene was born on October 11, 1942 in Edberg, AB to parents Edwin and Marion Kravik into a farming family. Marlene enjoyed telling stories to the grandkids about the times she was doing chores and working hard, but even more so about the fun she had with her siblings on the farm. She loved her brothers and sisters dearly, and loved reminiscing about her childhood days attending the Dorenlee School. She had an intense love for music, and an ear to play many instruments including the guitar, autoharp and organ to name a few. She also loved to sing and could harmonize like no other. This made her irresistible to the young man named Keith who had a guitar slung over his shoulder, who saw her sitting on the bench in a basement playing her guitar and singing away. So naturally, he joined in and she had his heart within a couple of notes. Keith and Marlene were married on May 17, 1969 in Calgary and continued to make music together for exactly 50 years, until Keith sang to her one last time. They made their home across Alberta until settling in Coaldale for the past 40 years. She spent most of her time as a homemaker but worked for a while as a housekeeper. She loved gardening and could make anything grow. She had a special talent for her flowerbeds, potatoes, raspberries and especially her strawberry patch. She was an amazing mom and an even better grandma. She always had cookies and endless hugs every single time they came over and bragged about them to everyone who would listen, especially her wonderful friends at the Sunny South Lodge, her last home. Besides her loving husband Keith, Marlene is survived by her mother Marion Kravik; sons Perry (Karol) Miller, Garry (Terri Ann) Miller, Roland (Jackie) Miller; daughter Candace (Rob) Van Diemen and daughter in law Marie Miller; step daughter Caryn Daye; brothers Stanley and Clayton; sisters Dorothy and Joy; grandchildren Claudia (Clayton), Danielle, Julian, Keith jr., Kyle, Jeanne (Casey), Brendan (Rachel), Nathan, Kerrie, Stacey, Erica, C.J., Kyrsten and Taylor and 13 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her dad, Edwin Kravik; her son Lorne; sister Beverly; her grandson Stephen; brothers in law Dwight, Ross and Nelson and parents in law Lawrence and Audrey Miller. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects between 4:30pm and 6:00pm on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at MARTIN BROTHERS WATERTON SUITE, 610-4 Street South, Lethbridge Alberta. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, May 24, 2019, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta. Interment to follow at the Coaldale Community Cemetery.

She is also survived by her parents, Walter & Violet Ortlieb, her brothers, Ronald (Jodie) Ortlieb and Kevin Ortlieb, her nieces and nephew, Amber, Leslie, Ashley and Jason (Russet) Ortlieb and grandnieces, Gracie, Hannah, Alexandria and Lucy.

LEONARD GREEN

The family of Leonard Green is sad to announce his passing on May 28, 2019 at the age of 81. Leonard was born in Trochu, Alberta on October 23, 1937 to George and Ivy Green. He was raised on the family farm west of Pincher Station with six other siblings. Leonard worked with heavy equipment in Alberta and Saskatchewan and in 1967 bought a ranch at Burmis. He ranched and operated equipment his whole life. When retirement discussions came up, he said he liked doing what he was doing. This was evident in the cattle he raised, whether it was purebred Charolais, or his commercial herd. Many hours were spent researching different breeds trying to get the right mix and in the end enjoying a good steak. He was always willing to lend a hand or a few words of advice. Leonard met many people throughout his lifetime and was always quick to stop for a chat whether he knew the people or not. He will be missed.
