LIND

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of JULENE ANN LIND; our beautiful, amazing warrior mom, wife and grandmother. She passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at the age of 71 years, surrounded by love.

She fought her battle with amazing courage, grace, dignity and strength like we’ve never seen.

Our beautiful mom was born and raised in Lethbridge, AB where she met the love of her life, Gary, while working at the local laundry mat. Apparently, all it took was one look; they married in 1968 and had three beautiful children. Mom and Dad had recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary in March.

For the last 11 years, Mom worked at Taco Time in west Lethbridge – a job she loved and where she made lifelong friends. She recently retired and was ready to start the next chapter of her life.

Mom loved sitting in her beautiful garden, full of the flowers she so lovingly planted, and she would listen to the birds that she fed faithfully every day. As day turned to night, she would sit in her garden amongst her many, many, many solar lights. This was her true happy place; she made her garden into such a beautiful and magical place.

She was the kindest, sweetest, gentlest and most loving person we have ever known. Slow to anger but so quick to giggle and smile. Even through her illness, she never once complained or felt sorry for herself. Our Mom touched so many hearts and lives with her kindness and compassion, and we couldn’t be more proud to call her ‘Mom’.

Julene is survived by the love of her life, Gary and their fur baby, Toby, as well as her three daughters, Tracy, Kimberly (Dave) and Lawanda (Rob) and her five precious grandchildren, Hayley, Aidan, Emlyn, Madysen and Masen. She is also survived by her sister, Maryann (Darell), her niece, Jennifer (Rob) and her nephew, Chris (Trish).

She was predeceased by her parents, William & Anna Stannard.

All is well, Mama. We will plant our trees and wait for your visits. We love you; see you soon!

A private family gathering will be held at a later date.

Death is nothing at all.

It does not count.

I have only slipped away into the next room.

Nothing has happened.

Everything remains exactly as it was.

I am I, and you are you,

And the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.

Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.

Call me by the old familiar name.

Speak of me in the easy way which you always used.

Put no difference into your tone.

Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.

Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.

Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.

Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.

Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it.

Life means all that it ever meant.

It is the same as it ever was.

There is absolute and unbroken continuity.

What is this death but a negligible accident?

Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?

I am but waiting for you, for an interval,

Somewhere very near,

Just ‘round the corner.

All is well.

Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.

One brief moment and all will be as it was before.

How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

– Henry Scott-Holland

In lieu of flowers and donations, Julene’s family asks that you give your mom a warm and loving hug.

KANASHIRO

Our family sadly announces the passing of our Mother Minako Kanashiro on Sunday, April 14th 2019.

Mom was born in New Westminster, BC to Kazuyoshi and Kikuye Hirotsu in 1932 and she married Jim Kanashiro in November 1952. Mom was employed at the Fashion Shop and later worked for the PFRA before opening Kelly’s, her Japanese goods store in North Lethbridge in 1974.

Like many people of her generation, Mom had experienced difficult hardships in her youth but never complained. Mom’s life was dedicated to her family and her home was always our focal point for family gatherings where you could count on a fabulous dinner and homemade dessert. Mom was a consummate cook and a prolific cookie baker. As well, Mom was a doting great grandmother and spent a lot of time with all her great grandchildren, often times “spoiling” them.

Another passion of Mom’s was the casino. Mom took many trips with her children and grandchildren to Vegas and she always looked forward to her weekly casino and lunch outings with her dear friend and neighbor, Doreen Gyorkos.

Mom was also a prolific knitter and her extended family have many keepsakes to remember her.

Mom was predeceased by her parents, her loving husband Jim, daughter Gwen and brother Tak as well as many brother and sister in laws. Leaving to mourn her passing are her children, Kevin, Kelly (Stephanie), Sherry (Keith), Lisa (Dominic) and Carla, sisters Yuki (Dick), Leslie, brother Rick; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, brother and sister in laws.

Mom was selfless, she always put the needs and interests of others first and she will be deeply missed leaving a vast void in our lives, more than we can express.

A celebration of Life will be held at the Lethbridge Signature Sandman (The Lodge) on Tuesday, April 23rd 2019, at 2pm. Parking is available at the rear of the hotel.

Flowers and Koden are gratefully declined. For those who wish, donations can be made to Parkinson Canada in Alberta or the Canadian Diabetes Association.

MARKS

On April 15, 2019, GRACE MARKS, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, at the age of 89 years, made her journey home to reunite with her husband Stan, family and friends.

Grace is survived by her brother and life-long best friend, Ross Chambers; and her children, Garry (Elly) Marks, (Lomond), Delores (Pat) Honess (Lomond), Darlene (Ralph) Peckford (Lethbridge), Barb (Rob) Kusnir (Taber), Cindy (John) Steenbergen (Lethbridge) and Helen Marks (Lethbridge) and many grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Stan Marks (of over 72 years), parents, brothers, sisters and many dear friends.

Grace Pauline Chambers was born June 4, 1929. Due to diphtheria, many babies did not survive. Grace’s mother could not believe her tiny brown-eyed baby girl made it through childbirth. Her mother would always say, “She had to fight her way here, and she has never backed away from anything or anyone since.” Even when the foe was mighty, Grace would stand up for what was right. She absolutely never ever knew the meaning of ”giving up” and if you were one of her family, you better not either.

Grace married her school sweetheart, Stan Marks, in 1947. They were so thrilled to be blessed with five children, ten grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. This was Grace’s greatest joy. She was such a phenomenal mother and grandmother. She was a brilliant, independent and strong woman and she modeled that for all of her children and grandchildren. She was so incredibly wise. She always knew what to say to make everything right again. Whether it was their biggest failure or greatest triumph, she was the first person her children would call. She was the rock and heart of her family. With her unconditional love, encouragement and enthusiasm she would make everyone believe they could achieve their dreams, and with her behind them, they did.

Grace was such a hard worker. Whatever needed to be done on the farm, or in the community, she was right there doing her share and more. She taught her children that when there was work to be done, everybody needed to help, to never ask someone to do what you wouldn’t do yourself and to feel the power and joy that comes with a team accomplishing the goal. She would work on the farm; drive the school bus; work at the post office; make meals fit for royalty; wash; clean and then before bed, sewing the most beautiful outfits just to make sure her children were dressed in the best. She would work endlessly and selflessly.

Many found Grace to be such a loyal friend, counsellor and confidant. She had such a gift of knowing when someone was hurting or needed a helping hand. She would then go over for a “little visit” because she thought they might just need someone to talk with. Those talks mended countless broken hearts. She was a firm believer that you should never push someone down when you could use the same hand to help pick someone up.

Her little farmhouse was always filled with so much laughter, love, and, of course, food. Her greatest delight was to have people over for a meal and visit. Many friends and neighbors would drop in around mealtime, and Grace would welcome them happily as she set more plates on the table. Everyone would rave about her meals and baking, but no one loved it more than her husband. When all the children had left the home, Grace and Stan still always ate their meals together at the kitchen table, discussing their day, their lives and their dreams. Until Stan’s passing two months ago, they lived their whole life as one. Reunited, their love story will now continue on for eternity. Grace will remain with us forever. Her many pearls of wisdom will continue to guide us throughout our lifetimes, and passed from generation after generation.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at MCKILLOP UNITED CHURCH, 2329 – 15 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, on Monday, April 22, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Terry Shillington officiating.

Grace will be laid to rest in Mountain View Cemetery at a later date.

Ivanka Dimnik

1922- 2019

Ivanka Dimnik of Lethbridge, Alberta, beloved wife of the late Anton (Tony) Dimnik, passed away on April 22, 2019 at the age of 96 years. Born in Gorica Vas, Slovenia on August 4, 1922, Ivanka was the 10th child of Jakob and Ana Maté. She resided in Slovenia until near the end of World War II when, to escape the ravages of war, she and her younger sister were sent by their family to seek temporary refuge in Austria. That temporary refuge lasted for three years, after which Ivanka and her sister emigrated to Canada. Ivanka eventually settled in Lethbridge to be with her future husband, Tony. Ivanka met Tony just months before leaving Austria. That short time together led to a year long courtship consisting of eloquent poetic love letters to each other until Tony emigrated to Canada. Ivanka and Tony reunited in 1949 and married in 1950. Throughout her life, Ivanka displayed a strong personality which included characteristics of tenacity, determination, selflessness, responsibility for others and a strong instinct to survive. All of that was coupled with a very strong faith in God and prayer. Ivanka’s instinct to survive was evident not only in the struggle she endured as a non-English speaking immigrant to Canada, but also in facing serious health challenges. This included a near death experience in 1958 when after her heart and breathing stopped and she started to “move toward the bright light,” she turned back thinking that she could not die leaving her husband alone with five young children. After that experience, she rallied from and conquered other illnesses, including lung cancer and a stroke. In addition to her strong personality Ivanka, especially in her later years, was known as a lady of grace, elegance, beauty and a person with a warm and welcoming smile. While all of Ivanka’s formal education was in Slovenia, including college level education where she excelled in the area of mathematics, she was a life long learner and encouraged her children to be the same. All six of her children have excelled in educational endeavours leading to multiple post secondary and graduate degrees. Ivanka was a member of the Our Lady of Assumption Church serving in various ministries over the years and a long- time member of the Catholic Women’s League. Ivanka’s memory will be cherished and she will be dearly missed by her children: Tony Dimnik of Belleville, Ontario; Martha (Ralph) Ottenbreit of Regina, Saskatchewan; Stan (Jane) Dimnik of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Hedy (Michael) Lemiski of Calgary, Alberta; Barbara (Dave) Snopek of Cranbrook, British Columbia; and Michael (Michelle) Dimnik of Lethbridge, Alberta. Ivanka is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and several in-laws. Ivanka was predeceased by her loving husband Tony, her cherished daughter-in-law Judith, her parents and her 10 siblings. A Vigil Rites (Prayer Service) will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 29, 2019 at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CHURCH, 2405 – 12 Avenue South, Lethbridge AB, with Father Kevin Tumback, Celebrant. Ivanka Dimnik

1922 – 2019

JOYCE (GHOLZ) FELLNER

July 22, 1947 – April 23, 2019

JOYCE FELLNER passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family at St. Michael’s Health Centre Palliative Care Unit on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at the age of 71 years, after a courageous battle with ALS.

Joyce was born and raised in Bakersfield, California. She attended public schools in Bakersfield and graduated with honors from high school in 1965. Throughout her junior and senior high school and Bakersfield College careers, she played the French horn and, in 1966, marched with the Bakersfield College Band in the Rose Bowl Parade. For a number of years she played in the Lethbridge Gold Band. In the summer of 1964, she was an exchange student in Mexico City where she attended the University of Mexico to study Spanish. From 1967 to 1969, she attended the University of Oregon-Eugene and majored in German, the language she studied throughout high school and college. She graduated from the University of Oregon in 1969 with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Oregon for high academic honors.

In 1968 she met her future husband, Erwin Fellner, at the University of Oregon. On New Year’s Eve, Erwin and Joyce were engaged and on March 27, 1969 the two were married in Bakersfield. During the summer of 1969, they moved to Lethbridge where Joyce continued her studies to become a teacher. On April 18, 1970, Suzanne was born at St. Michael’s Hospital. Joyce’s teaching career started at Hamilton Jr. High School where she taught for two years. From 1973 to 1975, she lived in Germany where Erwin was appointed Vice Principal of the Department of National Defence’s Junior School in Baden Sölingen, Germany. In July 1975, the family returned to Lethbridge. Shortly after arriving in Lethbridge, Heidi was born and, in 1976, Joyce returned to teaching and was appointed to Gilbert Paterson Junior High School where she stayed for most of her 22 years teaching career.

In 1993, Erwin retired and Joyce took a one-year leave of absence so they could both attend the University of Klagenfurt in Austria. Upon their return to Lethbridge, Joyce taught third and fourth grade for two years. In 1996, Joyce and Erwin accepted a two-year teaching position as the founding staff of the Dresden International School in Dresden, Germany. Joyce’s fluency in German was an asset in German-speaking countries as well in fitting in with Erwin’s many Austrian relatives. Soon after returning to Lethbridge, Joyce retired from teaching in 2000.

During the many years living in Europe, Joyce and Erwin travelled extensively. After their retirements, they travelled to many parts of the world. Besides travelling, Joyce was a devoted grandmother and an avid quilter.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Erwin, daughters Suzanne Schleindlhuber and Heidi Wood (Dylan), stepchildren Craig and Sandra Fellner (Lori), grandchildren Lukas, Lia, Spencer and Miles, nephews Andrew Schuchardt (Tiffany) and Nathan Gholz (Sara), and nieces Anita Ryder (Dan) and Laurel Gholz.

She was predeceased by her father, Charles Gholz (1983), her mother, Florence Gholz (2007) and her brother, Lee Alan Gholz (1999).

TAKEYASU

Reiko Takeyasu (nee Okahashi) passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital on May 3rd, 2019 at the age of 86. She succumbed to double pneumonia and the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. Throughout her illnesses, she maintained a cheerful and pleasant outlook with family, friends, and care givers. She was born in Port Hammond, BC (now part of Maple Ridge) on Apr 23rd, 1923 to Masuzo and Kikuye Okahashi. Her mother passed away when she was only 2 years old, resulting in her being fostered to a Finnish family. She often joked that she was an ‘unfinished Finn’. During the Japanese Canadian Internment, she chose to rejoin her family and was relocated to the Coaldale, Alberta area. She met and married her first husband George (Joji) Takeyasu in Aug 1956. She had 3 sons. Before the children were of school age, she worked selling Fuller Brush products, and later worked as a bookkeeper for the original CJOC radio station for 25 years; she is remembered fondly by her co-workers. Upon retirement she was presented with a trip to Hawaii. After George’s passing in 2001, she married Elmer Dell Bolick in 2005. They enjoyed dancing at the LSCO and many trips and cruises. She, Elmer and friend Elsie Krasman, formed the ‘Recycled Teenagers’ who were a Karaoke group that performed at various venues. Elmer passed away in October of 2018. She was an extremely active volunteer. She rose to the rank of District Commissioner in the Scouts Canada organization, and District Governor in Toastmasters. She attended a multitude of cub/scout camps and jamborees, as well as Toastmaster competitions and conferences. Nadia Campbell, is a dear friend that goes back to the early days of Toastmasters with Reiko. She expressed her creative side with Sumi-e (Japanese Brush painting), Ikebana (Flower arranging) and charcoal sketching. She is pre-deceased by her siblings George and Charlie Okahashi, Merry Sameshima, her youngest son Stacey, and both her husbands George Takeyasu and Elmer Bolick. She is survived by her sisters Lily (Yas) Yamashita and June (Horsey) Tajiri, her sons Lloyd (Cynthia Palahniuk), Trent (Veronica Horn) and grandchildren Reanna, Cassidy and Sara-Jane. She was also blessed with many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, a great-grand nephew and 2 upcoming great-grand niece/nephews. She hosted several of them in her home over the years, notably Dr. Kathy Yamashita, Justin Yamashita and Chandra Yamashita. When her sons were younger and she left on trips, she would get niece Linda to stay with them, so that they would be fed and ‘not kill each other’… A viewing will take place at Generations Funeral Home (703 – 13th St. N. Lethbridge) on Friday May 10th, 2019 @ 7 PM. The funeral will be held at the Buddhist Temple of Southern Alberta (470 – 40th St. S. Lethbridge, just south of the Casino) @ 10 AM, a lunch will follow. Special thanks to the nurses and staff at the Chinook Regional Hospital, Unit 4C and the Good Samaritan Park Meadows Village for the special care and attention they gave to Reiko. In lieu of flowers or koden, donations may be made to the Lethbridge Alzheimer’s Society, #40, 1202 – 2 Avenue South, Lethbridge.
