Peter Dueck

1928 – 2019

It is with thankfulness to God that we say goodbye to our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Peter, who passed away at Cedar Creek Adaptacare on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at the age of 91 years.

Peter is survived by his children Doug (Erna) Dueck, Brenda (Tom) Metcalfe, Del (Betty) Dueck, Bonnie (Arnie Bartel) Dueck; grandchildren Jenn (Irv) Dick, Jo (Derrick) Laychuk, Travis (Melissa) Dueck, Jamie (Cam) French, Rob Metcalfe, Lana (Jay) Morton, Cory (Melissa Collin) Dueck, Taylor Bartel, Steven (Chelsea Kane) Bartel; 11 great-grandchildren; brother Jack (Debra) Dueck; sister Susie Unger and sister-in-law Mary Dueck.

Peter was predeceased by his parents; siblings Margaret, Anne, Agnes, Henry and Baby Mary.

Peter was born in Coaldale, where he grew up on the Dueck family farm until he married and successfully built several farms with his wife Mary, his “Rose”, and their children, in the Coaldale area. He and Mary retired to Lethbridge in the early 90’s, while still maintaining some farmland and his beloved quonset and yard.

Peter lived his faith steadfastly day by day and will be also remembered for his love and meticulous efforts in farming, in growing with farming technology and always having the cleanest crops, the tidiest yard and the most up-to-date machinery and methods. We respected the importance he placed on education, himself being not only an excellent farmer, but also an accomplished pilot and mechanic.

We remember him engaging with his grandchildren, whether it be building go-carts, playing pool in the basement, driving lessons or sharing history.

Finally, we remember his generosity. Dad had intuition about his children’s personal needs and was very generous during those times.

We are very grateful to the kind and gentle care provided by the staff at Cedar Creek Adaptacare.

A Private Family Graveside will be held in the near future, and a Celebration of Peter’s Life will be held at a later date.

MURPHY

With saddened hearts we would like to announce the passing of one very great lady. Bernice Luella Murphy (Pratt) of Granum AB. Born in Arborfield SK. September 24, 1941 passed away peacefully March 10, 2019 surrounded by family in the Claresholm General Hospital. Bernice, or Bunny as she preferred to be called, had lived a life that had taken her to places all over western Canada ; from places like the Thompson MB. nickel mine to golf and country clubs from Winnipeg MB. to Victoria BC. Through that time she became a professional chef/ baker and had worked in many high end facilities, the St James Golf and Country Club for one in Winnipeg MB. She retired from a long time career as a baker at the Cranbrook BC. Safeway. There she was regarded as one of the best cake decorators in the area and was asked often to privately bake and decorate unique one of a kind cakes. She took on these challenges head on and always came out on top. (She is the original cake boss in our minds). Full of fun and laughter she loved to be with family especially her grandchildren. Bunny with her husband Al (Papa) loved to go camping and having their grandchildren with them whenever they could. She would always go head and shoulders above to put on a family dinner and did so very often, laughter was always the first thing on the menu. Being surrounded by family is truly what she loved the most. She had the heart of a saint and would not pass by anyone who was in need. She was strong and had fire yet she always had a sense of humor, when asked how she felt she would always say “with my finger and my thumb”. She believed that you always had to keep a sense of humor in your pocket because you never knew when you would need it.

Bunny is survived by her daughter Sherry Odnokon of Calgary Alberta, Son Kyle (Cindy) Murphy/Quaife of Lethbridge Alberta and Son Shawn (Debra) Odnokon of Cranbrook British Columbia. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Brother and Sister in law Darrell (Shirley) Murphy, Trudy (Paul) Ollivier along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Bunny is predeceased by her Father Clarence (Pratt), Mom Sylvia (Niwranski), Son Lonnie (Odnokon) and her husband Allan( Murphy). There will be no funeral sevices for her at her request. A celebration of life will be done at a future date where her ashes will be laid where she has asked them to be. For details you can contact Shawn, Kyle or Sherry. Mom when you get to where you are going keep bitchin and kickin we will all be along eventually and look forward to seeing you again.

The family would also like to thank the nurses, volunteers and Dr. Smith at the Claresholm General Hospital for their amazing care of our mom. (I am sorry to say you will have to buy your own pizza now. We hope you enjoyed them as much as mom enjoyed buying them for you. It brought her so much joy to do that). We would also like to thank two very special ladies. Aunt Shirley, who was by Mom’s side from the beginning. Taking her to appointments, picking up anything Mom needed, visiting her at her home in Granum and visiting her in the hospital every day. Also Aunt Nancy who spent 23 days in the hospital with mom 24/7 not one complaint always smiling and helping the staff tend to Mom’s care. She made Mom’s last days bearable by being there when we could not. Mom loved you two very much and appreciated everything you both had done for her. For you two ladies this family cannot thank you enough. Both of you are true inspirations of what it means to have family.

So from the bottom of our hearts

Thank you.

Shawn Odnokon, Kyle Murphy, Sherry Odnokon and family

W.H. (Bill) BEEBER

1932-2019

W.H. (Bill) Beeber, 87, of Calgary died unexpectedly Friday, March 8 in Strathmore hospital after a brief illness.

He is survived by sons Allan (Liz) of Lethbridge, Grant (Theresa) of Wainwright, grandchildren Dylan, Jennifer and Stephen, several great-grandchildren and his best friends Mel and Hilda Ray of Strathmore. He was predeceased by second wife Josephine in 2018.

Bill was born Jan. 26, 1932 in Bassano, Alberta to Harry, the CPR station manager, and Molly, a nurse. He was the only son and youngest of five children, three of whom Molly raised as her own after the death of Harry’s first wife Amy Newell in 1921.

Bill started work with Transalta Utilities, then known as Calgary Power, in the early 1950s, working in various commmunities including Pincher Creek, Warner, Westlock, Cardston, Raymond (where he was district manager), Lethbridge and Calgary before retiring at the Westaskiwin meter shop in the late 1980s.

Bill was an avid woodworker who crafted his own versions of the Norwegian violin and a talented musician who especially enjoyed playing banjo. Shortly before his passing, Bill had started taking Spanish lessons and was planning to buy a new inflatable boat so he could continue pursuing his other passion of fishing.

After Joey died, Bill fulfilled a bucket list dream last August of fishing for walleye on Rainy Lake, Ontario where Allan started his newspaper career. Until the end, he gleefully told stories, even to hospital staff, of accidentally bear-spraying himself in their cabin.

Vernon Soderquist

1934 – 2019

After enduring a particularly hard prairie winter in January and February, Dad is “On The Road Again”. Dad came home on the first day of spring after enjoying one of his favorite pastimes, playing cribbage at the Legion, and passed away suddenly on Thursday, March 21, 2019 at the age of 84 years. Vernon (Vern) Lloyd Soderquist was born in Carmangay in 1934 and was the eldest child of Fred and Olive (Miller) Soderquist. In 1958 he met the love of his life Doreen Neild and they were married on June 5, 1959. Doreen had come from England for a one-year nursing assignment, but their lives were quickly intertwined, and Doreen permanently immigrated to Canada. In 1968 Vern and Doreen chose their son Richard, and in 1969 their daughter Krystine. Vern loved the outdoors and both kinds of music (Country AND Western!). He also loved watching all sports but particularly loved baseball, golf and curling. The family enjoyed many camping trips to Lundbreck Falls and summers with the Millers at Shuswap Lake in the 70’s, as well as spending lots of time at the Miller ranch near Carmangay. Those closest to Vern knew he could be stubborn and opinionated at times, but he loved us all in his own way. Vern is survived by his children Richard (Ilse) Soderquist and Krystine (Joe) Salmon and three grandchildren Emily, Daniel and Megan. Theodorus Campmans

1928 – 2019

Mr. Theodorus “Ted” Campmans of Picture Butte passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at the age of 90 years. Ted was born in Raalte, Holland. He grew up on the family farm with his five brothers and three sisters. Ted is survived by his brother Gerrit in Holland, brother Tony in Picture Butte, many family members in Holland and his nieces and nephews in Alberta. Ted served in the Dutch army and was deployed to the war in Indonesia. He along with two of his brothers helped to build the dykes in the Noordoostpolder in Holland. In 1956 he decided to immigrate to Canada, where he worked in the dairy and farming industry in Southern Alberta as well as in construction alongside Gus Peters (Peter’s Drive In) in Calgary. In 1959, his brother Tony came to join him in Canada where they both worked together to eventually purchase a farm and start a dairy. They started with one cow, a stool and a hand separator. Together they built a successful dairy. Eventually Ted bought the farm across the road from the dairy and he tended to the land, raised pigs and beef cattle and eventually was content to farm the land. Ted sold the farm to his brother Tony in the early 1990’s and moved to Lethbridge, where he turned his entire backyard into a garden and spent many years growing fresh produce for the food bank there. His backyard garden was able to donate up to 1 ton of produce in a year. Ted always had patience for his nieces and nephews who were often underfoot and loved to ride in the tractor with him. Known to us as “Teddo” he always had a joke for us, and all the kids had their turn to sit on his knee as we were growing up. Ted always was there for suppers and special occasions, greeting us with his signature handshake. We often went to Ted’s to see what he was fixing, doing or inventing. Ted was the ultimate example of getting hard work done!

Ted had a passion for charity. Living through the war and seeing the poor in Indonesia spurred him to live a humble, simple life and he was able to donate to a variety of charities over many years. A Prayer Service will be held at 7:00PM on Thursday, March 28, 2019, at the ST. CATHERINES ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 762 Crescent Ave, Picture Butte, AB T0K 1V0. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2:00PM, on Friday, March 29, 2019, at the ST. CATHERINES ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 762 Crescent Ave, Picture Butte, AB T0K 1V0. Ted will be laid to rest in a private family Graveside Service. Flowers are gratefully declined. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Lethbridge Food Bank Society, 1016 2 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB T1J 0C9, or the Lethbridge Soup Kitchen, 802 2 Avenue North, Lethbridge, AB T1H 0C9. Roberta graduated from Cut Bank High School in 1981. Following graduation, she attended Eastern MT College in Billings and Vo-Tech in Helena looking to find her niche in life.

Roberta, always needing to find an adventure, joined the US Navy in 1985 and never looked back. During her career in the Navy, she met and married her husband of 24 years, Kenneth J Perkins of Miles City. Together they raised their son Noah J Perkins, the greatest adventure of all.

After a 20-year career in the Navy, in 2005 Roberta retired from the military and began looking for a new adventure. Roberta decided to move back home to Montana ahead of her husband and son, waiting for his retirement from the Navy in 2006. She was once again searching for her niche. She worked for Holman Aviation in Great Falls for a short stint but decided she needed more. Roberta moved on to find a career with World Wide Custom Brokers in Coutts, Alberta, where she found her niche in life and worked there until her passing. Roberta is survived by her husband, Kenneth Perkins; son, Noah Perkins; parents, David and Allison Harvie; brother, Andy (Karla) Harvie; sister, Cathy (Darren) Hughson; Gus (Mimi) Wildeman; nieces and nephews, Taylor Harvie, Jace Harvie, Morgan Hughson, Remington Wildeman, soon to be Tylee (Jace), Kylan (Morgan); great nieces and nephews, Kade, Colton, Thea and Tyce.

Ken and Noah give their profound appreciation to the nursing staff at Northern Rockies Medical Center, Northern Rockies Medical Center Staff and to the numerous extended family and friends that visited.

Together Emily and Ernie owned and operated D & E Transport plus a few other oilfield related businesses for fifty years. During this time Emily was a meticulous book keeper, dispatcher and the heart of the company. Emily was a very strong member of the Catholic Church, having spent many years with a variety of Catholic volunteer groups. Most Saturday mornings would be coffee time at Emily’s for the family, we always enjoyed this time with her. She also had an amazing sense of humor, saving and collecting jokes her whole life, she had binders full of them. Emily was also a major fan of the Toronto Blue Jays, we all knew not to call her during a game. In her younger years, she was an avid soft ball player, league bowler and curled for a couple of years. She loved her weekly get together with friends. Emily was generous to many charities and causes in her lifetime.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Emily’s name may be made directly to St. Augustine’s Catholic Church (Windows/Building Fund), 5009 – 48 Avenue, Taber, Alberta T1G 1T4.

ALSTON

MARIAN JANET ALSTON (June 28, 1930 – March 26, 2019) passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Janet will be lovingly remembered by her children: Jody, James (Sandy Jensen; Kristen, Kayla, Jaclyn), Drew (Wendi Turner; Andrew (Brecia), Lauren, Nathan, Madison), Jacqueline (Kent Warnica; Lauren, Kathryn), Donna (Trent Taggart; Nathan, Jessica, Rebecca, Rachel, Kate); and Jonathan (Valerie (Levi), Garett, Ethan) and great-grandson Jared James. She is survived by her brother Lawrence (Norma) Turner. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Doug, her parents George and Thelma Turner, and grandsons Jared, Kyle, and Isaac.

Janet was born in Magrath and had a wonderful, small town childhood. She met and dated Doug when she was 14, but when Janet moved to “enemy territory” (Raymond) for high school, their romance was seemingly thwarted. Janet made many friendships and had many fond memories of her Raymond days. Janet developed excellent sewing and ironing skills at her parents’ dry cleaning shop. After finishing high school, Janet worked in Edmonton. She then served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Canada West Mission. Doug and Janet eventually got married and started their family in Glenwood. They moved to Cardston and lived there until they moved to Lethbridge in 1968. They lived in the same house on the “Greenstrip” for 50+ years.

Janet loved parties, both planning and attending them. She belonged to many clubs, including The College Faculty Wives, The Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, Forever Friends, and “the Club”. She worked as an Avon lady and at Sears. She was an avid sewer, quilter, knitter and a talented genealogist. Janet’s homemade chocolates were legendary. She had a beautiful alto voice and sang in several choirs. She was also an excellent swimmer.

As a faithful member of her church, Janet served in many callings. Her favorite role was when her husband was called to serve as President of the Nigeria Lagos Mission where she became “mission mom” to many young missionaries. She felt they listened to and followed her advice much better than her own children (smile). Doug and Janet cherished their time in Africa. Upon returning to Canada, Doug and Janet served as temple workers. After Doug’s passing, Janet missed him greatly and looked forward to reuniting with him.

Janet’s physical presence will be greatly missed by all who loved her; however, her spiritual presence will remain with each of us. Her life of devotion and dedication to Jesus Christ will forever be an example.

The Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, April 1, 2019 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints LETHBRIDGE ALBERTA STAKE CENTRE (scenic drive).

Friends are welcome to meet with the family on Sunday from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at SALMON AND SONS FUNERAL HOME (near the airport).

Interment will take place at 10:00 a.m. prior to the funeral at the Magrath Cemetery.

Howard Frank Kaupp

1932 – 2019

With sadness we write to inform you that Howard Kaupp passed away on March 25, 2019, in his sleep at the Taber Hospital at the age of 87. Howard, an only son, was very close to his sister Noreen who passed away in 1993. Dad has remained close to Noreen’s daughter Lorie and son Kelly. Over the years, Kelly has made regular visits and hunting trips to the Kaupp farm. Howard was also very close to his parents Mary and Raymond Kaupp, who moved to Lethbridge after leaving the family farm west of New Dayton. Dad married his life-long love and partner Francis Kaupp on June 21, 1952. Mom, who is known to most as “Franki” was raised on a farm east of Bowden with her brothers and sisters. Over the next twelve years Mom and Dad were blessed with seven children including six boys and a daughter. Tragically, their oldest son William (Bill to most) passed with his son Clinton in February of 2018. Howard is survived by his wife Franki, daughter-in-law Paula, son Patrick and wife Audrey, son Brian and friend Jeannie, son Gordon and wife Pam, son Gerald, son Shelly and wife Leslie, and daughter Karen and husband Gord. As the years rolled by the Kaupp family expanded with surviving grandchildren that include Jaime, Lindsay, Jon, Paul, Cale, Kimberly, Curtis, Tyler, Raymond, Wally, and Lexie. There are 19 great grandchildren so far. Howard had a very full and happy life in many respects. He was tall in stature and had an extra kind heart that guided him towards a disposition of integrity, compassion and generosity towards family, friends and many strangers who often came to visit the family farm and sometimes ended up living there for a time working and otherwise getting to know Howard and Franki. Dad had a kind and engaging way of communicating with most people that resulted in many long-lasting friendships and other positive connections in the local communities of New Dayton, Warner, Milk River, Raymond and Lethbridge. Howard was also active with his wife Franki in politics whether at the local, provincial or federal levels. Farming was his main lifelong occupation, but Howard also enjoyed running his Pork Shop in Lethbridge, and some years working at UMA engineering. Dad was very proud of his role in helping to bring fresh water by way of an underground pipeline to their local community that was later expanded to other farms and communities. Howard very much enjoyed a number of trips to Europe with Franki, and other friends, renting cars and enjoying the sites throughout England, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Switzerland and northern Italy. In his earlier life, Dad enjoyed basketball, baseball, curling, hunting, and dancing. Howard was a social man who enjoyed a cold beer or a mixed drink of rum and coke. Sometimes he would make an exception and have more than one. Dad made countless meals and extra great breakfasts of fried eggs, pancakes and homemade sausage for his many, visitors, friends and ever-expanding family. Howard was very proud of his family. He believed that the family farm was the best place on earth to live even when the west wind was blowing too hard, day after dusty day! And of course, he was beyond certain that marrying Franki was his best day, and her best choice, that led to long lasting happiness, a big family, and many fun adventures, vacations, parties and other get togethers at the farm one mile west of New Dayton. Howard and Franki were very proud of their home and perfect summer yard of flowers and trees that hosted many fun events and relaxing cool evenings. Going to Church and practicing his Catholic faith was central to how Howard thought about life. Howard understood that everyone, including himself, made mistakes big and small. And just as important, he believed in the forgiveness of sin, and the life everlasting to come, hopefully in that happy place above the clouds. Thankfully, Howard will have many friends and family to greet him on his continuing journey towards the light. Thank you to Raymond Hospital, Good Samaritan Linden View in Taber and the Taber Hospital for the great care they took of Howard. Prayers will be held at 7:00pm, on Sunday March 31, 2019 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610, 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00am, Monday, April 1, 2019 at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2405-12 Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta.

DERENZO

WILLEMINA HENDRIKA DERENZO (nee Schepers) of Lethbridge and formerly of the Crowsnest Pass, beloved wife of the late Louis Derenzo, passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Thursday, March 28, 2019 at the age of 92 years.

Willy was born in Amersfoort, Holland on June 18th, 1926 to the late Gerard and Marie Schepers. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband Louis Derenzo, and her beloved son, Stephen Derenzo.

Willemina is survived by her daughters Ria (Warren) Cecchini, Kay Derenzo (Doug), Louise Derenzo, Diane (Taco) Hansma, son Tony (Gloria) Derenzo, and daughter Debra Derenzo (Jayson). She is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and extended family in Holland.

Willemina’s fondest childhood memories involved time with her dearest brother Ben Schepers, from Queensland, Australia. Their relationship was so strong even though they lived miles apart. Willemina loved her brother Ben wholeheartedly.

During WWII, Willemina met the love of her life, Louis while he was serving in Holland. Soon after they married, they embarked on a journey to Canada to start their new life together; Willemina was such a beautiful war bride. Together they built a life and a wonderful family. Every grandchild, great-grandchild, and great-great-grandchild was loved by “Grandma Willy”, and each one had a special place in her heart. Mark or “my little Peanut” as she called him, was no exception. Mark needed a special kind of love that she was always willing to give. Whenever the grandkids visited grandma’s house, there was never shortage of fresh homemade bread, grilled cheese sandwiches, genoa salami and back tickles.

Willemina or “Willy” had such a zest for life. She was known to her friends and family as being “spunky” and so much fun to be with. Willy was a beautiful lady inside and out, a true angel here on earth. She had an infectious smile and witty sense of humour. Willy touched the lives of everyone she met. She will always be remembered for her caring heart, kind soul, and love for others. Family was extremely important to Willy, and when we all got together she never turned down an opportunity to play spoons or dance in the kitchen.

Willy spent the last few years living at Golden Acres where she had many good friends. She loved the staff that cared for her, and they loved her too. She touched the lives of so many people, and we will all miss her immensely.

To honour Willy’s wishes there will be a celebration of her life on Saturday, July 27, 2019 in the Crowsnest Pass for family and close friends. Time and Location to be announced at a later date.

In October of 1999, our lives changed with the discovery of a brain tumour– hence the fearless, tireless, unselfish life of not fighting cancer, but living with cancer for 19 and a half years. The ups and the downs, the battles and the blessings came to a peaceful end with Dawn’s last wish to pass peacefully at home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a foundation that is being created in memory of Dawn. This foundation will assist all front-line emergency services professionals in need of immediate assistance. The name of this foundation is “A New Dawn”. KUZMINSKI

TEODOR KUZMINSKI, beloved husband of Yanina Kuzminski, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family, March 26th, 2019 at the age of 88 years.

Besides his loving wife Yanina, married 63 years, he is survived by his daughter Helena (Mark) and Ted Jr. (Tina), his three grandchildren Fayla (Cam), Jacek and Romney (Tony); and predeceased by his daughter Marie, son Michael (Kristin), and Teodor’s sister Helen (Jack) but survived by his nieces Jeanette (Keith) and Christine (Ian).

Teodor was strong willed and determined to provide for his then small family of females immigrating to Canada with the aid of his sister, Helen (Jack) who helped base his home in Lethbridge. In 1959 he moved from Vilnus, Poland to Lethbridge, quickly learning the English language and continued his job as chief engineer. He established himself at St. Michael’s Hospital then later, Canadian Linen Supplies up to his retirement.

Teodor will always be remembered as “Uncle Teddy” at Canadian Linen for he showed a strong, burley exterior but in reality showed a compassionate heart…soft as a teddy bear.

For many summers, Teodor loved to drive the family motor home to the West Coast visiting his children Mike (Kristin) and Marie, then more recently to Minneapolis, visiting his youngest son Ted Jr. (Tina).

One of Teodor’s many passions was feeding and rescuing injured birds back to health. He loved televised hockey games, watching war movies, fishing with his sons in their younger years, swimming in their backyard pool and traveling to Europe, visiting distant family. He will be remembered for his funny sense of humor and the ability to make everyone laugh while both he and Janina loved hosting bbq’s in their manicured back yard with their many friends.

Teodor was also a very sensitive man and you would occasionally catch him teary eyed over matters of the heart as he always wanted to help with family circumstances, no matter the situation. He was the best father one could ever ask for.

Teodor will be loved and missed by all who knew and loved him.

After her time with them had ended she had gained knowledge and teachings and came to be regarded as a respectable woman, blessed with integrity and humbleness. Margaret was supportive and cared for her cousins all through her life, she loved each of them as her own. All of her cousins would often call her daily and she was the focal point in the family. They would often say, “call Margaret she will know”. She was a source of strength and always kept the family together. She was always willing to give her last dollar to those who needed it and many times would take care of them to the end. She was a friend and a sister to everyone and she always had many stories to share and reminisce about growing up in lower Standoff and would often talk about her grandmother Mary, and her uncles and aunties. Margaret had a calm demeanor and carried herself with grace. She seemed to have an endless pool of inner strength, an innate sense of family values and a stubbornness to match, which made the perfect contrast to Dale’s outgoing yet gentle nature. Margaret was Dale’s partner in life and in business. Her continuous love, steadfastness and support gave many the strength to carry on in times of trouble or distress. She was always ready to listen with an empathetic heart and a compassion that touched any and all who came to know her. Margaret had quite the sense of humour, was very outgoing, and always had a smile on her face. She had an understanding of human nature, and a love for her family that always radiated from her and comforted those around her. Margaret was always a helping individual by nature. The light in her life was being surrounded by her family, siblings and cousins. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, auntie, cousin, niece and sister-in-law. Margaret is a great loss to many and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. We love you, and we will miss your gentle spirit Margaret!

Please join the family at the Wake Service being held at the White Calf Hall in Standoff, AB on Sunday, April 7, 2019, from 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm. The Funeral Mass will be held at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Monday, April 8, 2019 at 11:00 am. The Interment will be held at the Eagle Tail Feathers Cemetery on the Blood Reserve, AB.

Angela “Angie” Randa

1932 – 2019

Mrs. Angela “Angie” Randa of Lethbridge, beloved wife of Mr. William Randa, passed away at St. Michael’s Palliative Care Centre on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at the age of 86 years. Angie was born in Barnwell to Valentine and Maria Vaclav in April 11, 1932 and attended school in Barnwell and Coalhurst. She worked at Marquis Bakery and lived with her best friend Albina, before marrying Bill on November 22, 1961 and had a double wedding with Frank Vaclav and Albina Randa. Her greatest love was cooking and baking for her family and friends. Bill and Angie farmed near Park Lake and Angie always planted and grew a huge garden, only to can, freeze and give to all of her neighbors and friends. She loved to craft “Stumpkins” and make special occasions “very special” for everyone. Angie loved curling, she loved to play in her younger years and later in life watched on TV every game and tournament, which she would call from the couch with her best friend and soulmate Bill. Besides her loving husband Bill, Angie is survived by her daughter Shelley Thom; son Gary (Suzanne Tivadar-Althen) Randa; grandchildren Abby Randa, Gracie Randa and Adam Thom. Angie was predeceased by her parents Valentine and Maria Vaclav; brother Frank Vaclav; son-in-law Gerard Thom, her second son who passed away on June 27, 2017 from ALS. The loss of Gerard was devastating for Angie and she never recovered from the loss. Her happiest thought through her five week cancer journey was that she would soon see Gerard, hug him and share all the love from everyone still here on earth. A Vigil Rites (Prayer Service) will be held at 6:00pm on Sunday, April 7, 2019 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta. Led by Deacon Cliff Bogdan. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00am on Monday, April 8, 2019 at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2405 – 12 Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Father Kevin Tumback, celebrant. CLOTILDA (MANY FINGERS) SOUP

“Piitaki” – Eagle Woman

May 13, 1938 – March 30, 2019

Our beloved mother, wife, daughter, niece, sister, auntie, grandmother, great grandmother, friend and colleague was called home on Saturday March 30, 2019 at the age of 80 years.

Clotilda is survived by her sons Ricky Lewis Soup (Marlene), and Todd Shannon (Arlene) Soup. Brothers Adrian (Geraldine) Many Fingers and Ivan (Verna) Many Fingers. Sisters Virginia (Lester) Tailfeathers, Geraldine (Donnie) Many Fingers, and Anne (Rodney) Healy. Grandchildren: Jeron (Michael), Janetta (Alejandro), Nikki (Tashina), Megan (Colby), Olivia (Keegan), Kesley (Alixx), Shania (Charlie), Rebby, Jayden, Jasmine, Keenan and Adonis. Great grandchildren: Brady, Alora, Keleb, Dayton, Taycen, Zephryn, Jonah and Jenna. Numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, colleagues and bingo friends.

Clotilda was predeceased her husband Louis (Sonny) Soup; son Renny (Annette); and grandson Cayley Soup. She was also predeceased by her parents Frank and Kate Many Fingers; brothers Franklin Many Fingers, Jordan Many Fingers, and Brent Many Fingers.

Clotilda was born to Frank and Kate Many Fingers on May 13, 1938 at the Blood Indian Hospital. She is the eldest sibling of nine children. She grew up with three sisters and five brothers. Clotilda was raised on the Blood Reserve attending schools at St. Mary’s Residential School and Roman Catholic Convents at Pincher Creek and Medicine Hat, along with her younger sister Virginia. At a young age Clotilda suffered a serious ailment of appendicitis, where she was unable to attend school for one year. While at home Clotilda learned to sew, which later became a lifelong endeavor. Clotilda was raised in a cowboy and ranch setting, as her father Frank was a well recognized all round champion cowboy. Along with her siblings, she learned to handle many chores on the ranch and would travel with her parents to numerous rodeos. Clotilda developed a hard work ethic which carried on throughout her life. Many of her family and life long friends will remember her kind and compassionate nature.

On October 31, 1959 Clotilda married her life long partner Louis Winston Soup and they were blessed with three sons–Ricky, Renny and Todd. In the early 60’s, Louis and Clotilda along with Ricky moved to Vancouver B.C. where Louis attended Carpentry training and Clotilda attended Nursing Aid training. The young family lived and worked in Vancouver for a few years along with Louis’s mother Julia, Papa Jake, and siblings. In the mid 60’s they moved back home to Alberta and raised their growing family, living and working in Calgary for a period, then back home on the Blood Reserve.

Clotilda was a person of many talents and abilities. During her professional career she worked in various capacities in the Health Field as a Nursing Aid in Cardston, a Director of Social Services on the Blood Reserve, and Director of the Detox Centre in Fort Macleod. She was also an entrepreneur, being a seamstress, and owner of the Standoff laundromat. Prior to her retirement at age 70, Clotilda returned to the Health Field in Cardston as a Nursing Aid and a Home Care Worker for the Blood Tribe Health Department. In her spare time Clotilda was an avid bingo player.

Clotilda was a huge supporter of her husband Louis, and sons, Ricky, Renny and Todd’s sports activities. As a loving mother, she always ensured her boys were well fed and clothed, sewing many of their school outfits. Clotilda was very proud of her family’s many accomplishments, always ensuring good school attendance—as education was priority number one. As a grandmother, Clotilda was very proud and loving to her many grandchildren. She would travel with them to many events, such as hockey tournaments, graduations, family dinners–always letting them know how precious they all were to her. Clotilda was so very proud of her late son, Renny who joined the powwow trail as a traditional dancer. She would often accompany him and his family to many powwows. Clotilda participated in numerous traditional activities, including sweats and ceremonies. She was proud of her culture and language, enjoying many visits with family and friends as a fluent Blackfoot speaker.

Clotilda was very independent and resilient throughout her life. She was a cancer survivor, having been diagnosed with breast cancer in the 1970’s and living through the spectre of this disease for the rest of her years. In the 90’s Clotilda was in a serious car accident. She sustained significant injuries, which effected the use of her left arm. She eventually lost usage of the arm, but still managed to live a very active lifestyle until her residence at Kainai Continuing Care Centre. The family is eternally grateful for all those who attended to her care until her passing.

A Family Service will be held at Legacy Funeral Home on Monday, April 8th from 5:00-6:00 p.m. followed by the Wake Service at the Senator Gladstone Hall, Blood Reserve from 7:00 – 11:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church,Blood Reserve on Tuesday, April 9th at 11:00 a.m. Interment in St. Paul’s Cemetery.

PAUL

SHIRLIE MAE (OCKEY) PAUL, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 6, 2019 in the Good Sam’s of Magrath, Alberta at the age of 84 years.

She is predeceased by her husband, James (Jim); her oldest & youngest sons, Ken & Kevin; a grandson, David; her parents, LeRoy & Olive Ockey; her brother, Eddie Ockey.

She is survived by 3 children, Randy (Cathy), Mike, Nancy (Henry) and a daughter in law, Liz. She has 6 grandchildren & 6 great grandchildren.

Shirlie lived in Beazer & Cardston most of her early life. She married in 1953 and had 5 children. In 1968 Jim & Shirlie moved the family to Lethbridge. They had a busy life and they enjoyed their time in the LDS Church. They really enjoyed camping and family gatherings. They loved being grandparents. And this was a reason for moving to Magrath in 1982. The kids had room to run and explore. Also Shirlie loved the quieter community. Shirlie and Jim enjoyed the friends they made in Magrath. They joined the Good Sam organization, Bridge Towners Chapter. Shirlie enjoyed working the Calgary Stampede with fellow Good Samer’s. All the Samborees they went to gave them many memories and stories they could tell. They were members and quite involved with the Senior Center in Magrath. Shirlie enjoyed this because after Jim passed she kept busy with Church and the Quilting ladies and all the wonderful suppers and parties. Shirlie will be missed by Family and Friends.

The Funeral Service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, GARDEN PLACE CHAPEL, Magrath, on Friday, April 12th, 2019 at 12:00 noon, with Bishop Byrne Cook officiating. Mary is survived by her children Doug (Erna) Dueck, Brenda (Tom) Metcalfe, Del (Betty) Dueck, Bonnie (Arnie Bartel) Dueck; grandchildren Jenn (Irv) Dick, Jo (Derrick) Laychuk, Travis (Melissa) Dueck, Jamie (Cam) French, Rob Metcalfe, Lana (Jay) Morton, Cory (Melissa Collin) Dueck, Taylor Bartel, Steven (Chelsea Kane) Bartel; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers Henry Voth, Abe (Erica) Voth, Dave (Mary) Voth, Neil Voth; sisters Lora Siemens and Erna Schmidt. Mary was predeceased by her husband Peter; parents; siblings John Voth and Elsie Hubert. Born in Coaldale, Mary grew up on the Voth family farm until she married and successfully built several farms with her husband Peter, and their children, in the Coaldale area. She and Peter retired to Lethbridge, in the early 90’s. This was the fourth house and yard that Mom lovingly decorated and tendered with her special touch to be yet another home, but this time for her growing family of grandchildren. She is remembered for her intense love and protection of her children, her talents in gardening, sewing and cooking, and her steadfast work in the fields alongside Peter in the early farming years. She is respected and honored for her never-ending patience, gentleness, and faith, always demonstrated through her daily actions in a totally non-judgmental way. We are so grateful for her proud and positive relationship with each and every grandchild and were fortunate to see that love and those big smiles extended to her great-grandchildren. Finally, in summary, Mom: a gentle spirit, a kind and considerate individual, and an inspiring role model. We are very grateful to the kind and gentle care provided by the staff at Cedar Creek Adaptacare. A Private Family Graveside will be held in the Coaldale Cemetery. A Public Celebration of Mary and Peters Lives will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at the COAST LETHBRIDGE HOTEL AND CONFERENCE CENTRE, 526 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, Alberta.

TJORNELUND

ARDITH LOREEN COOPER TJORNELUND – nee ALDRIDGE of Cardston passed away in the early hours of Sunday, April 7, 2019, after a brief struggle with failing health, just a few weeks short of her 87th birthday. She is predeceased by her loving husband David Thomas Cooper in 1975 and Otto Beck Tjornelund in 2008; also her ‘big’ brother Bill Aldridge, her sister Olive (“Auntie Crooks”) Godfrey, and her ‘baby’ brother Frank Aldridge. Left to mourn and celebrate her life is her sister Carolyn Cahoon, her twin brother Arden Aldridge, his partner Sharon Cook and her sister-in-law Madeleine Aldridge. Her legacy of loving service and dedication continues with the survival of her children – Pauline Cooper of Lethbridge, Ross (Jocelyn) Cooper of Kamloops, Diane (George) Prouse of Airdrie, Donna (Gord) Kirwan of Medicine Hat and Steve (Kirsten Cleland) deWinter of Magrath. As an ongoing part of her legacy, she is also survived by nine grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

Ardith was born in Cardston, Alberta on May 21st, 1932 and grew up on the family farm in Jefferson. Life on the farm was an anchor to her identity and her deep family bonds and roots became a source of pride. When she was 18 she married David and moved to various places where he taught school. Peace River Country was the first of many adventures which included Spring Coulee, Del Bonita and even to the dark continent of Africa. Home again to southern Alberta and Del Bonita, eventually moving to Cardston in 1969.

The following years brought change with David’s passing in 1975, her subsequent marriage to Otto in 1977 and yet the years of service and community work continued. She was an active member of the St Andrew’s United Church congregation and a leader and strong supporter of the United Church Women group.

Even as she got older, it didn’t seem to slow her down much – involved with organizations that she believed made a difference, like the Terry Fox Runs, Alzheimer Walks, the Hospital Auxiliary and so many others.

She joined Lions Clubs International and that seemed to be tailor made for her (not exclusively to be sure, because she still continued to her service to the community and people of Cardston and area), But being a Lion – one of the first women to BE a Lion, opened other worlds of opportunity for her. And she embraced the challenge! She was elected as the first female District Governor in what was then District 37-D (southwest Alberta and western Montana and continued to demonstrate her leadership when she was selected to be the Council Chairperson of Alberta, Montana, NE British Columbia and Northwest Territories. Her passion for Lions wasn’t always appreciated by some, but Ardith didn’t do anything in half measures! Programs in Lions that were most dear to her was the Dog Guide program and the Lions Quest program that was instituted in schools to give young children the tools to cope with life.

Ardith has received many recognitions and awards for her significant contributions and excellent service but she didn’t flaunt or advertise them, and so we don’t know all that she received. We do know that she was Cardston Citizen of the Year, she was recognized by the Alberta Government in Alberta’s Centennial and in Lions, her service was also recognized with various awards and fellowships, including being a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow.

Ardith had a determined strength that valued action and love over praise and titles. She had a loving heart, willing to assist anyone who needed a soft place to fall when life got hard. She was a beautiful woman who supported others with a dignified and graceful spirit. Ardith enriched, inspired and touched the lives of so many people – many people never really knew the hand that reached out to them, made a sandwich at school, stayed late to clean kitchen, or even made coffee in the morning. It was just there. Her legacy of service and compassion will live on in our hearts forever. May God bless and keep you Mom, until we meet again. We love you.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 13th, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., at the Cardston Alberta West Stake Center (846 1st Ave W – Waterton Highway). In lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to the Charity of choice.

Mary Dueck

1928 – 2019

It is with sadness, love and thankfulness to God that we say goodbye to our treasured mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Mary, who passed away April 5, 2019 at Cedar Creek Adaptacare at the age of 90 years.

Franki Yanick (nee Filuk)

After a short but difficult battle with cancer, Franki Yanick (nee Filuk) passed away peacefully on April 10, 2019 at her home in Comox, British Columbia. Franki was born in Swan River, Manitoba on June 15, 1938. She was part of a family of 15 siblings and is survived by her brothers Tim Filuk (Mesa, Arizona), Wally Filuk (Calgary), Harve Filuk (San Diego, California) and her sisters Olga Elenko (Fairmont), Jennie Oleksy (Lethbridge), Ruth Narusis (Nanoose Bay) and Anne Lietz (Victoria). After leaving the family farm, Franki became a teacher and spent her early career in Winnipeg and the surrounding area. At that time, she met the love of her life Larry (Tickety Boo) Yanick, and after a far too long courtship (in her opinion), they were married and began their life together. Franki and Larry moved from Manitoba to Lethbridge, Alberta in 1968, where Larry continued his teaching career and Franki started a new endeavour as a loving mother. She is survived by her son David Yanick and his partner Sue Finneron. as well as her daughter Jenia Blair and son-in-law Glen Blair (Prince George). Once David and Jenia were old enough, Franki began her second career as a real estate agent. Over the course of 20 plus years, she became the number one real estate agent in Lethbridge and took immense pride in helping countless numbers of families finding their perfect home. The passion of life for Franki came from her four grandchildren. Logan and Lauren Yanick (David Yanick & Dawna Merriman) and Olivia and Finnegan Blair (Jenia & Glen Blair). Her grandkids were in constant touch with her over her past days through texts and phone calls. Nothing gave her more joy than discussing golf and hockey with Logan, getting social updates from Lauren, receiving updates on school exams from Olivia and hearing jokes from Finn. They kept her spirits high and helped her through the daily challenges she faced. In 1999, Franki retired from her real estate career and she and Larry moved to Comox to help raise their grandkids. She was a regular feature at dance recitals, volleyball games, hockey and golf tournaments. She loved spending time with her grandkids and was their number one fan. Other than looking after her family, Franki had three main passions in life. The first was cooking -especially Ukrainian traditional food such as perogies, cabbage rolls and borscht. She hosted numerous family gatherings where no one went home hungry. Her Christmas baking (especially the poppycock) was also famous and enjoyed by many family and friends. Her second passion was working on traditional Ukrainian Easter Eggs designs. Over the course of 40 plus years, she became a master in this art form. She never thought about selling any of her eggs, but instead provided them as gifts to friends and family members. The third passion for Franki was golf. She loved to play, watch, and talk golf. Her “golf gang” of ladies were incredibly important to her. They shared endless laughs and she cherished her time with them. The family would like to send out special thank you’s to those who looked after Franki during her illness; Dr. Doug Anderson and the staff at the Comox Medical clinic, Dr. Willis Tien, Dr. Sunil Parimi and the VIHA palliative nurses. And a very special thank you to Dawna Merriman, Franki’s personal home-care nurse. Dawna was there for Larry and was there for Franki. Her kindness and gentle touch will not be forgotten. At mom’s request, there will be no local public service. Her ashes will be placed alongside her beloved Larry at the Mountain View Cemetery in Lethbridge, Alberta. The family gratefully declines flowers but would ask that donations be made to the charity of your choice in memory of Franki. We would also like to ask that you have a nip of scotch (and maybe a side of kale) tonight and cheer the memory of a very special wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
