Chenyse D. Plettell, daughter of Donald and Aline Plettell, passed away quietly at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Monday, May 30, 2016, at the age of 21.

Chenyse was born on Thursday, January 26, 1995 in Lethbridge, Alberta. She is survived by her parents Donald and Aline Plettell, her two brothers Dominique and Michael, and her sister Rayleen, as well as numerous other family members and friends who loved her dearly.

Chenyse studied Psychology at the Lethbridge College and graduated in December 2015. She went on to study at the University of Lethbridge and planned to become a lawyer.

Chenyse loved music and spent her spare time playing the piano or guitar, and writing new songs. She worked with her dad and his band The Chevelles, operating lights and technical set up. She started with music lessons from age 6, but went on playing the piano and guitar mostly by ear. She was a beautifully talented musician and she talked her brothers into playing together with her, as a band, at Galt Gardens for a Canada Day celebration. She loved roller coasters and was not afraid to go on something others would not try.

Chenyse always looked out for the underdog, and was kind to everyone. She recently was learning about healing stones and gave many away to try to help others. She was beautiful inside and out, and anyone who knew her could see how kind and gentle she was. She loved her family and had a very special relationship with her sister Rayleen. Chenyse will be missed, but we know she is with her grandfather’s Plettell and Tiesters. We will always remember her as a beautiful, kind and talented young woman who was taken from us too soon.

GEMER

CAROLE ANN GEMER (nee Hadford), beloved wife of George Gemer, passed away at the Foothills Health Centre, on Thursday, June 2nd, 2016, surrounded by her loving family at the age of 71 years.

Carole was an amazing lady who touched the lives of so many. Affectionately known as “Mother Goose”, she was a mom to many, always eager to help out, take care of others and “get the job done”.

She was a track and field athlete in her youth, winning a silver medal at the National Championships. She was named the Kinsmen Athlete of the Year in 1964. Her coach, George, became her husband and she embarked on a lengthy career as a team manager for the University of Lethbridge team and the National track and field team. She guided multiple teams to the Pan-American Games, the Commonwealth Games, the World Student Games and the World Championships. She was selected to escort the teams to two Olympic Games – Barcelona in 1992 and Sydney in 2000.

She was a pioneer for sport in Lethbridge, serving on countless organizing committees for local and international games, including the 1976 Montreal Olympics and the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. She was also a Pronghorn Sports of Hall of Fame inductee in 2000 and a Golden Jubilee Medal recipient in 2002.

Even though she was born in Lethbridge and has Swedish and English ancestry, she became a valued member of the local Hungarian Cultural Society, serving as President for over a decade. She was more recently a Board Member for the Southern Alberta Ethnic Association and was eagerly anticipating the opening of their new building.

Carole had numerous accomplishments but more importantly was a woman who so generously gave her time and energy wherever she could. Her family would often say she worked full time but never got paid. She loved to be busy and she was always there when you needed her. She wore a warm, welcoming smile and had a sunny way about her. She was loved and respected by so many and has her place in all our hearts.

Mark Schandor

1953 – 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mark Arnold Schandor on June 4, 2016 at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary due to cancer related complications. Mark was 63 years young. He is survived by his Father, Joe (Mary) Schandor, his brother Dave (Barb) and his nieces Hayley of Lethbridge and Jennifer of Edmonton. He was predeceased by his mother Irene Schandor, his brother Miles, and his sister Patricia Weir. Mark was born, raised, and lived his entire life in Lethbridge. As a teenager, he started his working life as a “gas jockey” at Northside Shell, then moved on to busboy duties at the Marquis Restaurant before finding his life long career at the Lethbridge Herald. Mark was a truly dedicated employee; he took enormous pride in his work in the composing room: he worked countless overtime hours to meet deadlines, he would go into work on his days off to help out, and never turned down a request to cover off his colleagues when they needed to take time off. After 41 years of service, Mark retired in 2014 to “Go Fishing”, as this was his greatest passion along with cruising in his 1965 Mustang. Mark will always be remembered as an extremely kind and generous man who did not have the word “no” in his vocabulary. He was always stepping forward to help his friends and neighbours and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him. We will especially miss Mark’s quiet presence at our family gatherings on holidays, and his regular Sunday afternoon visits when he would stop by for a visit and a beer with his brother. In keeping with Mark’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. A Celebration of Mark’s Life will take place at a later date.

Bert farmed in the Parkland area for 50 years. He was a member of the Legion for over 50 years, serving 1 term as president, and 16 years as secretary-treasurer of the Nanton branch. Bert was active in the Parkland community, having served on the boards of the Parkland school, community hall, and the Mutual Telephone Company. He also volunteered at the Nanton Lancaster museum for several years, where he enjoyed meeting and talking with the museum visitors. Bert leaves to mourn his wife, Dorothy, his daughters Marj (Tom) Engelman, Ruth White (Paul Leighton), and his granddaughter Alyssa Engelman. Nora Bernice Gee

1928 – 2016

Mrs. Nora Gee of Lethbridge, passed away on Monday, June 6, 2016 at the age of 87 years. Nora was born into the Kennon family near Swalwell (Three Hills) on October 6th, 1928. She went to Calgary to take teacher training. Upon completion of her program, she taught in a one room, nine grade school. While taking further courses at the University of Alberta (Edmonton) she met Kenneth Stanley Gee at a local dance. Things went well there, and soon they both went to a four room town school north east of there. They became engaged while at another school in Carstairs. After summer school, on August 18 they were married in St. Michael’s and All Angels Anglican church in Calgary. Ken got a position in a senior high school there, and Nora did some kindergarten work. They built a house, and Carol and Brian were both born while living there. They changed residence and Ron and Keith joined the family. Nora kept on with her kindergarten work for a while, while raising her family. The family moved twice again. When the youngsters had grown up, their parents found a lovely lot on the west bank of the Okanagan valley. This was to be their dream home. A few years later, upon deciding to sell their home, they moved to Vernon, BC. Being native Albertans, they moved once again to Red Deer where they lived in a lovely half duplex. The children were well established in their married lives, so their parents were free to go wherever the urge indicated. Nora had two sisters in Lethbridge, both of whom claimed that the weather was much finer there. So off the Gee’s went, once again. They enjoyed a couple of years in a condominium there. As housekeeping became a handicap, they moved once more into a lovely senior’s residence where room and board was provided, along with ample entertainment. They had a wonderful time. There is a lovely park two blocks from their residence and they set up the practice of going for a daily walk in that area, using their walkers. Nora loved to dance, having done extensive square and round dancing for many years in Arizona. Her favorite sports were lawn bowling and curling. Early in 2016 Nora developed abdominal cancer which led to her demise in the early afternoon of Monday, June 6, 2016.She is survived by her husband and one daughter, Carol Ann Gee of Prince George, and three sons Brian Arthur Gee (Grand Cayman), Ronald Dale Gee (Lethbridge), and Keith Bradley Gee (Melbourne, Florida); sisters Francis Tanner (Calgary) and Shirley Beach (Lethbridge). A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, June 10, 2016 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4th St. S., Lethbridge, AB with Reverend Andrew Horne, officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

William “Bill” Hamilton

1924 -2016

Bill Hamilton, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away June 5, 2016 peacefully in his sleep with his daughter Carla by his side and his family nearby. Bill had just proudly celebrated his 92nd birthday with his family one week earlier. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Caroline (Lonsdale), grandson Shayne Hamilton and his sister Ruby Wood, his son-in-law Charles Prongua, his mother Mabel (Sullivan), and his father Lyman. Bill is survived by his four children and their families: E.L. (Bud) Hamilton (Claire Cadieux), Marv Hamilton (Sherry Hayes), Kathy Prongua and Carla Hastie. He was a cherished grandpa to 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by brother-in-law Herb Kuehn. Born in Upper Stewiacke, Nova Scotia on a hay, dairy farm with woodland, Bill had just one sister Ruby, two years younger. He was a Boy Scout, member of a Dairy association, 4H member and was an active member in his church. Tragically, by the time he was 16 years old, he had lost both of his parents. Afterwards, Bill graduated from the Agriculture College in Truro. In 1948, Bill heeded the “call of the west” and was Alberta bound where he worked in agriculture for a number of farmers in Southern Alberta, eventually working for brothers Ed and John Lonsdale in Warner. That is where he met their sister Caroline and after a whirlwind romance they were married and had a loving relationship which lasted 60 years. After starting their family in Warner with Bud, they moved to Skiff where Marv, Kathy and Carla were born. Then it was off to the big city of Lethbridge where Bill continued working with agricultural machinery and obtained his Heavy Duty Mechanic license while working for Don Dalke at Southland Ford. Bill retired in 1989 after working with the Dept. of Highways. Bill was involved with the local chapter of the Independent Order of Foresters, eventually becoming the Chief Ranger. He was also a member of the Labor Club. Bill relished the time spent with his family, many pets, camping, curling, dancing, fishing and gardening where he took particular pride in his potatoes and corn. A very kind, generous and passive person, he kept people listening closely with his ‘maritime mumble’. Quick to flash his wonderful smile with his baby blue eyes, he was a true gentleman, and much beloved, especially by his family, whom he cherished dearly. Our family would like to express our deep gratitude for the compassionate care that Bill received from the staff and friends at Martha’s House, St. Therese Villa and finally at the Chinook Regional Hospital, Unit 4C. A Memorial Service in Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at MCKILLOP UNITED CHURCH, 2329 – 15 Ave. South, Lethbridge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Association, Box 2211, Lethbridge, AB. T1J 4K7 or the Lethbridge & District Humane Society, Box 783, Lethbridge, AB. T1J-3Z6.

TOONE

Garth Toone, beloved husband of Rebecca Toone and father of Gillian and Fielding, passed away in Lethbridge on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at the age of 53 years. Garth was born in Lethbridge on June 8,1963, the youngest child of Ed and Dorothy Toone. He grew up in Lethbridge then served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah.

After returning from his mission, Garth worked various jobs and attended the University of Lethbridge Fine Arts Program. He was proud to be able to have a travelling art exhibit with the Allied Arts Council in 1996 – “Building Histories – Mines of the Rockies”. Garth continued to cultivate his artistic talents his entire life. Garth spent 9 months “bumming around” Australia in 1992. He toured the gold coast and got his Scuba ticket and spoke often about swimming with the sharks. He met Becky in September 1992 and they hung out a bit before Becky went back to school in Edmonton. They reconnected when she moved back to Lethbridge in September 1993 and spent a lot of time hanging out with mutual friends in the Singles Ward. They joke that they didn’t date that long but they spent so much time together as friends that it just felt right to get engaged. They got married on May 6, 1995, had Gillian on April 30, 1996 and Fielding on March 26, 1999. (“The 2 best decisions we ever made”) Garth loved spending time with Becky and the kids and he was always fun to be around. They will miss laughing so hard with him. Becky went back to work full-time in 2001 as Garth’s health started to deteriorate. Garth continued to work with the disabled until 2010 when he decided it was time to concentrate fully on his health and the kids. For most of Gillian and Fielding’s lives Garth was a stay-at-home dad and they developed a very special relationship with him that many children will never have with their father. Garth’s health was a concern for many years and he was recently in the hospital after a fall for 9 weeks. He had been doing very well and had just started the last stage of his treatment when he unexpectedly and quickly passed away the day after his 53rd birthday. At the time of his death Garth was in great spirits and he and his family were looking forward to his full recovery. Garth will be remembered by family and friends as an amazingly giving and loving person. He had a very strong, unique sense of humour and found joy everyday. He will be greatly missed by his wife, kids, family and friends. Friends may meet with the family on Thursday, June 16, 2016 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at CHRISTENSEN SALMON GENERATIONS FUNERAL HOME, 703-13 Street North, Lethbridge, or prior to the service at the church on Friday, June 17 from 12:00 to 12:45 p.m.

Roberta “Marie” Hoffman

1935 – 2016

Roberta “MARIE” Hoffman (Moss), August 29, 1935 – June 14, 2016. It is with aching hearts we announce that Marie passed away peacefully in Calgary at the age of 80 years with her loving family at her side, after a brave struggle with cancer.

Marie was born and raised on the family farm in Cross Creek, NB, the eldest child of Robert McArthur Moss and Mary Myrtle (Griffin) Moss. From her parents and life on the farm she gained a lifelong love of nature and gardening. She completed high school in Stanley, and then attended Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB. After completing her practicum as a lab technician at Saint John General Hospital and another two years working in Fredericton, she headed west and found work in the lab at Calgary General Hospital. One memorable evening she ventured out with friends to Penley’s Dance Hall, where she met and fell in love with Hal, her future husband.

In 1959, Marie transferred to Winnipeg General Hospital, and she and Hal were married in Winnipeg on June 25, 1960. The family soon included a son Robert and daughter Susan when Hal & Marie moved in 1964 to Lethbridge. It was there that daughter Judi arrived to complete the family, and Hal & Marie enjoyed living in Lethbridge for almost 52 years. There are many happy memories of camping in the Rockies, and road trips to visit family in Arrowwood, Manitoba, and New Brunswick.

Family meant everything to Marie and she was always there for her family. The door was always open for extended family visits. Marie loved reading, biking, walking, cross-country skiing, gardening, and she played Scrabble to win. Marie was an active participant in her community; as a faithful member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd for over 50 years, a loyal patron of the Lethbridge Public Library, and after her family was raised, she served 10 years as a homecare worker at the Lethbridge Health Unit. In younger years Marie and Hal were active in the Lethbridge Curling Club, and in retirement they enjoyed many good times hosting and travelling around the world with the Lethbridge Chapter of Friendship Force.

Left to mourn Marie’s loss are her beloved husband of 55 years Helmut “Hal”, son Rob Hoffman (Ivy) of Calgary, daughter Susan Duncan (Darren) and granddaughters Maddison and Kristen of Calgary, and daughter Judi Hoffman (John Wall) and granddaughter Zoey of Vancouver. Marie is survived by her sister Betty MacGillivray of Stanley, brother Bill Moss (Donna) of Cross Creek, and sister Rosemary Ingraham of Arrowwood. Also left to mourn are her in-laws Albert Hoffman (Lena) of Altona, Agnes Hoffman of Winnipeg, Anita Braun of Altona, Rudy Hoffman (Karlene) of Winnipeg, Harold Hoffman (Marge) of Mississauga, Irene Braun (John) of Winnipeg, Dennis Hoffman (Jeanine) of Winnipeg, and Marvin Hoffman of Thailand. In addition, Marie is survived by many nieces, nephews and good friends, including her long-time friends Bev McBride and Julie Ewashen. She is predeceased by brothers-in-law Gordon Ingraham, John MacGillivray, Irwin Hoffman and Jake Braun.

The family sincerely thanks the staff at Southwood Hospice in Calgary and Dr. Oviatt in Lethbridge for their compassionate care, and Pastor Tom Peterson and his wife Karen for their spiritual guidance and support.

JUSTINE “JESSIE” SERA

JUST-ANK HARMONY

Our loving mother and wife, JUSTINE SERA, 77, of Lethbridge, Alberta, passed away suddenly on March 17th, 2016.

She will be dearly missed by her husband, Frank Sera of 17 years, as well as her ten children: Beverly (Wayne) Johnson, Sandi (Todd) Williamson, Pat (Kerry) Grzech, Brenda (Mike) Bateman, Mike (Lucille) Penner, Polly (Chris) Andrews, Carmen (Wayne) Trockstad, Kevin (Carole) Sera, Randy Sera and Leigh-Ann Sera.

Also left to cherish her memory are her 23 grandchildren, 14 great-granchildren, and three great-great grandchildren and many friends.

Justine was predeceased by her parents Franz and Maria Miller, nine older siblings and first husband George Penner.

Justine was born on June 24th, 1938 in Winkler, Manitoba. She enjoyed singing, fishing, camping, spending time with family and entertaining. Along with Frank, they loved to spend time with friends and various activities.

Justine and Frank enjoyed spending time with family and friends and camping and fishing, especially when she caught the first and largest fish. She loved to sing alone or with others. After Justine and Frank married (17 very happy years) they started to sing duets and dress up in different costumes they made for various occasions. They were called the goofie couple. Most of their costumes were homemade from old drapes and bean bags. Their reward was seeing all the smiles and laughter from those around them, while tapping their feet to the songs. They entertained many at Senior Lodge and old folk’s homes.

Justine was active in several clubs. She was Honoured Royal Lady in the Elks Royal Purple Ladies, both Seniors Centres, Hungarian Old Timers Club, Readymade 50+ Club, and she loved to sing in different choirs. Justine also traveled to many parts of the U.S.A., as well as Cuba, Mexico, and United Arab Emirates. She was kind hearted and ready to help anybody, especially those with special needs.

Barton Wyatt Kesler

February 21, 1933 – June 15, 2016

Mr. Bart Kesler of Lethbridge, the beloved husband of Shirley Kesler, passed away on June 15, 2016 at the age of 83 years.

Besides being survived by his wife Shirley, Bart is survived by his eldest son Barton “Trevor” Kesler and his wife Donna and their children: Lauren (James Hayduk) and Mitch (Mariah) Kesler. Bart is also survived by his youngest son, Harley “Stacey” Kesler and his spouse, Nathalie and children: Kayla, Austin, Hailey, and Lane.

Bart was born on the family farm to Harley and Lucy Kesler, and was the youngest brother to Lorence and Marion. He was raised on the family farm in Diamond City, Alberta and worked on the farm until 1957, when he married Shirley.

Bart obtained employment with the Government of Canada and worked at the Lethbridge Research Station for 34 years, specializing in Range Land Management. His work allowed him the best of both worlds; the security of a steady income as a “civil servant” and the ability to work in a ranching environment west of Stavely, Alberta. He was a skilled horseman and loved the horses that he owned. Bart had strong farrier skills and much of his time was spent caring for his horses.

His greatest passion was playing music. Bart was an accomplished bass player and loved playing his “electric bass”. The 1950’s to the 2000’s were spent traveling to various small towns in Southern Alberta, playing country music in community halls on Fridays and Saturdays nights. Bart continued playing music into his 80’s and until recent years donated much of his time to playing at jam sessions around Taber, Vauxhall, and Lethbridge.

Bart enjoyed the outdoors, and spent a great deal of his retirement at the cabin in Waterton. In the spring and summer months, he enjoyed hiking the trails in Waterton Lakes, and visiting the local coffee shops. The winter months were spent snowshoeing and cross country skiing in Indian Battle Park.

He was a proud grandfather and served as a teacher, and role model to his grandchildren: Lauren, Mitch, Kayla, Austin, Hailey, and Lane. Bart was proud of their academic, sport, and occupational accomplishments. He was a great grandfather to Harley and Reyna. Bart quietly played a grandfatherly role to others in his neighbourhood in his later years.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4th St. S, Lethbridge, AB

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at the COAST HOTEL AND CONFERENCE CENTRE located at 526 Mayor Magrath Drive, South, Lethbridge, Alberta with Harley Stacey Kesler officiating. A reception will take place after the funeral, and then a private Interment will follow at the Royal View Cemetery.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Those who wish, may make a memorial donation to the Alberta Cancer Foundation (telephone: 1-800-661-2262; website: http://www.albertacancer.ca/memorial).

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at the LUTHERAN CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD, 2406 – 11 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB with lunch to follow. Funeral services to be arranged by Martin Brothers, with Pastor Tom Peterson officiating.
