Barton Wyatt Kesler

February 21, 1933 – June 15, 2016

Mr. Bart Kesler of Lethbridge, the beloved husband of Shirley Kesler, passed away on June 15, 2016 at the age of 83 years.

Besides being survived by his wife Shirley, Bart is survived by his eldest son Barton “Trevor” Kesler and his wife Donna and their children: Lauren (James Hayduk) and Mitch (Mariah) Kesler. Bart is also survived by his youngest son, Harley “Stacey” Kesler and his spouse, Nathalie and children: Kayla, Austin, Hailey, and Lane.

Bart was born on the family farm to Harley and Lucy Kesler, and was the youngest brother to Lorence and Marion. He was raised on the family farm in Diamond City, Alberta and worked on the farm until 1957, when he married Shirley.

Bart obtained employment with the Government of Canada and worked at the Lethbridge Research Station for 34 years, specializing in Range Land Management. His work allowed him the best of both worlds; the security of a steady income as a “civil servant” and the ability to work in a ranching environment west of Stavely, Alberta. He was a skilled horseman and loved the horses that he owned. Bart had strong farrier skills and much of his time was spent caring for his horses.

His greatest passion was playing music. Bart was an accomplished bass player and loved playing his “electric bass”. The 1950’s to the 2000’s were spent traveling to various small towns in Southern Alberta, playing country music in community halls on Fridays and Saturdays nights. Bart continued playing music into his 80’s and until recent years donated much of his time to playing at jam sessions around Taber, Vauxhall, and Lethbridge.

Bart enjoyed the outdoors, and spent a great deal of his retirement at the cabin in Waterton. In the spring and summer months, he enjoyed hiking the trails in Waterton Lakes, and visiting the local coffee shops. The winter months were spent snowshoeing and cross country skiing in Indian Battle Park.

He was a proud grandfather and served as a teacher, and role model to his grandchildren: Lauren, Mitch, Kayla, Austin, Hailey, and Lane. Bart was proud of their academic, sport, and occupational accomplishments. He was a great grandfather to Harley and Reyna. Bart quietly played a grandfatherly role to others in his neighbourhood in his later years.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4th St. S, Lethbridge, AB

After graduating from high school, Candy moved to Lethbridge and furthered her studies in administration at the College. After receiving her diploma Candy couldn’t resist moving back to Foremost to begin a life with her soulmate Randy. They were married October 21, 1978 and began working on the family farm alongside Candy’s Dad, Ted. During this time in their life together, Randy & Candy enjoyed family trips to Hawaii, Las Vegas to take in the NFR and countless tractor pulling competitions. After the birth of her three daughters, Candy worked as the Foremost Village Administrator for numerous years and later put her excellent secretarial skills to use at Burton’s Esso. She always talked about how much she enjoyed working next to her good friend and mother- in-law, Mary Burton, at the Esso. In the following years, Candy worked from home as the bookkeeper for the family farm. She took pride in the farm and being able to be home to raise her three girls. Candy was an active member in many community events. She was involved in the Foremost United Church group, the Community Bus Association, along with her girls dance, skating and gymnastics clubs and countless other. Candy enjoyed her time as a member of the curling club, as well as the golf association. Together, she and Randy took great pleasure in continuing their family owned and operated school bus route for many years. After the loss of her loved ones, Candy gracefully carried on the family farm operations alongside her son- in-law Scott Hazell, and their long time devoted hired man, and friend, Bob Bourret. Candy was a woman that wore many hats, and despite all the hardships and obstacles she faced she was always proud to be a farmer. Candy never hesitated in donating to a good cause or to lending a helping hand to anyone in need. Her generous heart shone through every part of her life. All her friends and family were very fortunate to have such a selfless and devoted woman in their lives. She truly had a heart of gold. Candy Burton is survived by her two loving daughters Kelsey (Scott) Hazell of Foremost, Ab., Darcie (Rylund) Ens of Lethbridge, Ab.; mother Irene Lynes, of Foremost, Ab.; granddaughters Ainsley & Anniston Hazell, who were the light of her life. KANE, Robert Wilson Leonard (Bob Jr.)

Passed away July 9, 2016, at age 78. Bob was an entertaining man who enjoyed a party, loved to dance, tell a good story and have a drink (or two) and a smoke (or two). He didn’t think his resume of indulgences was full enough so later in life he added gambling to the mix. Born in Lethbridge, Alberta in June, 1938, he became the spoiled eldest child of Bob (Sr.) and Doris Kane. Junior lived life on his own terms and was involved with motorcycling throughout his childhood, so after several years as owner of the Western Gem Hotel and Saloon in Drumheller, Alberta, where he perfected his skills in shot pouring and storytelling, Bob moved to Kelowna with his wife Arlene, and soon after opened Kane’s Harley-Davidson which he ran successfully alongside his son Blair for over three decades. For those lucky enough to have known Bob, they understand what a ‘larger than life character’ he really was. Listening to him tell a story or give his opinion on any topic always made for lively and colorful conversation. Bob’s greatest passion was motorcycles and the motorcycle world loved him back. Every year hundreds would come to celebrate his birthday with a motorcycle ride in his honor. He was a wonderful husband, partner, father, grandfather and friend. The world is a poorer place now without Bob Kane Jr – his laughter and his Harley are quiet.

To commemorate Bob’s life a memorial celebration will be held at The Kelowna Yacht Club, Sunday July 17th at 1pm. For those wishing to participate in Bob’s Last Ride, a motorcycle processional will assemble at the Harley-Davidson dealership at 888 McCurdy Place at 11:30am leaving at noon to ride to the Yacht Club.

SMITH

LINDA BELLE TOLLEY SMITH, at the age of 81, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2016, in the Cardston Hospital with her loving family around her. Born January 22, 1935, she grew up in Mt View, Alberta, and was married and lived in Hill Spring, Alberta, from 1968 to 2014 before moving into assisted living in Cardston.

She served a full time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South Africa in 1958.

Always a hard worker, she graduated from the Galt School of Nursing in Lethbridge in 1956. She went on to a career as a nurse. She taught nursing at BYU in Utah, was a public health nurse, and worked in various locations before meeting and marrying her eternal companion Richard (Dick) Smith in November 1968.

Linda Belle was known for her loving and caring spirit. She loved to ‘clown’ around and included everyone as a friend. Ever the joker, she was a joy to be around. Games, cards, and visiting were some of her favorite pastimes.

She loved to travel; one of her favorite trips was when she and two friends drove to Guatemala. Linda was always looking for an adventure. Whether it was touring the Holy Land or parasailing in Mexico, she loved and lived life to the fullest.

Her favorite thing in life, though, was being a mother and grandmother. She is survived by her children—Virginia (Allan) Spence, Amy Smith (Wade), Lloyd Smith, Ellen (Dan) Brooks, Chelsie (Terry) Knight—and 19 grandchildren.

MITCHELL

It is with heavy hearts that the children of Lyla Vivian Mitchell announce her passing. She passed peacefully in her home at Vista Village in Pincher Creek on Sunday July 17th. She was surrounded by three generations of loving family and with her lifelong sweetheart Jim at her bedside holding her hand. She was born in the midst of the Porcupine Hills of Southern Alberta as a late Christmas gift to her family on December 27, 1931. She was raised in the Cowley area and attended school at the rural Tanner School until moving to the metropolis of Pincher Creek for high school. She later attended secretarial college at Mount Royal College in Calgary. Somewhere in between there Lyla, who famously loved to sing and dance, met a handsome young man at a dance in Waterton. They quickly became sweethearts, then newlyweds and have been inseparable for 63 plus years. His work on seismic crews led to many adventures for them chasing the work around Alberta, and their first two children were born on the road. Eventually they settled back in Pincher Creek where they would remain to this day. She worked as a secretary, first at Matthew Halton High School, then for the Town of Pincher Creek. Throughout her life and especially after retirement, she babysat for other families which for her was always much more of a joy than a job. She was a devoted member of the Pincher Creek United Church, singing in the choir for many years and acting as secretary for a time. She was a member of the Red Hat Ladies and the Rebekahs Lodge. She was passionate about several causes especially the Canadian Mental Health Association. Lyla was predeceased by her loving parents Albert and Mary, as well as her sister Marjorie Richards and her brothers Ralph, Ray, and Walter. Lyla will be lovingly remembered by her husband Jim Mitchell, her sister Verna (Cliff), her children Ken, Chuck (Monica), Frances [formerly Lorraine] (Dieuwertje), Carol (Hugh), Brent and Ian (Katy). She is also survived by grandchildren Kate (Chad), Tess (Ross), Sadie, Thomas, Tina (Chris), Rochelle (Steve), Shaen (Eric), and great grandchildren Jordan, Jace, and Megan. The Mitchell family would like to extend the most emphatic gratitude possible to all the staff of Vista Village. Not only for the family like level of care they have provided to Mom and Dad over the years, but also for the grace and kindness they showed us as we spent our last hours with Mom. There truly are no words we can offer to fully express what that means to us all. Thank you. A Funeral Service will be held at the Pincher Creek United Church (972 Police Avenue) on Friday, July 22nd at 2:00 PM. Memorial Donations in Lyla’s name may be made directly to Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta (402, 740 4th Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 0N9) or to the Canadian Mental Health Association (426 6th Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 2C9).

The family worked various jobs for the next few years and then Matt attended NAIT to become a Bricklayer. Over the next many years Matt, his father & several brothers owned and operated Peter Simons & Sons Construction, building quality homes in Lethbridge and Southern Alberta for many people.

In 2001 Matt was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Over the next several years he underwent numerous rounds of chemotherapy while continuing to work and live an active life. During the last few years of his fight with cancer, he witnessed the misery of many people in the Tom Baker and Jack Ady Cancer Centers and he volunteered to participate in clinical trials to help researchers test new chemo drugs to, as he once said, “maybe help someone down the road”.

Matt loved nothing more than the adventure of driving around picking rocks which he transformed into beautiful creative works. He also loved to travel, walking & hiking, his social circle (you know who you are) which convened at various pubs, antiques, music & dancing, but most of all his family.

Family and Friends are invited to a Memorial Service and Reception which will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825- 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB, on Friday, July 22, 2016, at 11:00 A.M., with Deacon Cliff Bogdan officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, 710- 10123- 99 Street, Edmonton, AB, T5J 3H1 or albertacancer.ca to follow Matt’s wishes to defeat this horrible disease.

HURLBURT, Kenneth E. 1928 – 2016

Ken Hurlburt was born in Lethbridge, Alberta in 1928 to Hannah and Orval Hurlburt and grew up during the depression in Milk River. No stranger to hard work, he was picking up odd jobs as early as seven years old, not for spending money, but to help his family get by. Through his teenage years, you could find him completely engaged and working wherever and whenever he could at the local stockyards. The seed for his life’s work was planted. After a year working with a crew surveying the Mackenzie Highway in the North West Territories, Ken headed back to Lethbridge hoping to pick up the cattle business where he left off. In the forties, the concept of selling livestock by auction was gaining popularity and the drovers’ era of private sales was coming to an end. Ken and a partner formed their own cattle buying company, bought an old truck and worked the country, buying one cow at a time. It was about this time, on a blind date arranged by her brother, (auctioneer Ted Newby) that Ken met a dark haired beauty named ReNée Newby, daughter of auctioneer Jack Newby and his wife Cora. Ken loved to say “I met her on the 25th of May, we were engaged on the 25th of June and married on the 5th of September. I knew she was perfect.” This September would have marked Ken and ReNée’s 67th wedding anniversary. In 1952 foot and mouth disease struck, and the cattle industry was in crisis. Determined, Ken set his sights on a new career, and with a $500 loan, a wife and two babies, he enrolled in auction school at Western College of Auctioneering in Billings, Montana. He was honoured to become the first Canadian appointed to the teaching staff of that college. Ken and ReNée settled in Lethbridge where their family grew to include six children: Jody (Ted Thaell), Brant (Patty), Darcee (Bruce Robertson), Kim (Kim Tillsley), Thane (Joy) and Heath (Dallas). Word of Ken’s talent spread quickly. He sold for Calgary Public Stockyards Mondays through Thursdays, for Pincher Creek Community Auctions on Fridays and Medicine Hat and Walsh on Saturdays. He was asked to consult with the St. Boniface, Manitoba Stockyards which at that time, was the largest livestock sales yard in the British Commonwealth. They operated six concurrent sales rings and to help turn their new but struggling auction facilities around, Ken commuted by train from Alberta for two years. Ken pioneered the concept of selling land by auction in Alberta; over 50 years ago he sold 26 sections of land near Foremost by auction. He sold such prestigious sales as the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto from 1958-1961, North America’s Largest Bull Sale in Calgary, and the Pacific National Exhibition in Vancouver where he sold the record high priced Angus bull at $10,000 for E.P. Taylor. Along with partners, Ken opened Fort Macleod Auction Market Ltd. in 1960, the Highwood Livestock Auction in High River in 1984 and Pincher Creek and Cranbrook Auction Markets in 1993. He served as President of the Fort Macleod Rodeo Association from 1960-1966, President of Alberta Auction Markets from 1963-1965, served on the Livestock Marketing (International) Association for three terms, was a Calgary Stampede Lifetime Alumnus, and judged both the World Auctioneers’ and the Calgary Stampede Auctioneers’ Championships. Ken was mayor of Fort Macleod for four years, and was twice elected Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament from 1972-1979. He was named Honorary Chief Ermine Horn of the Piikani Nation’s Black Horse Society. In 2012, Ken was inducted into the Livestock Marketing Association of Canada’s Hall of Fame. He was also the proud recipient of numerous medals for outstanding community service for ‘people whose actions have benefited their fellow Canadians’: 1967 Alberta Achievement Award 1974 RCMP Scroll 1977 Queen’s 25th Anniversary Medal 1992 Commemorative Medal 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada, 2005 Alberta Centennial Medal 2003 Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal 2012 Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal Ken and ReNée moved their family to Fort Macleod in the sixties – the home of the family ranch – where he was always humbled by where their hard work and devotion had brought them. He was a very grateful man; always singling out ReNée, awed by her steadfastness and faith in him. Ken Hurlburt was one of those people who made a difference – to his family, to his profession and to his country. He was highly skilled at what he did; he had a great affection for people, an engaging sense of humour and an infectious laugh. His diplomatic and marketing skills were exemplary. He was a visionary; dedicated and determined. He had a legendary work ethic and his accomplishments are rivalled only by the incredible volume of loving memories held forever in the hearts of his six children, their husbands and wives, twenty grandchildren, their husbands and wives and twenty-seven great grandchildren. Ken was predeceased by his older brother Tom Hurlburt of Sacramento, California and is also survived by his twin sister Kathryn Hurlburt of Fort Macleod. A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Church, 220 – 20 Street, Fort Macleod, Alberta on Monday July 25, at 2:00 pm, with a reception to follow at the Fort Macleod Auction Market, 813 – 14 Street, Fort Macleod, Alberta. Condolences may be forwarded to leslie@hurlburtrock.com The Hurlburt Family would like to express their great appreciation to Dr. Steven Beekman for his gentle and compassionate approach to Ken’s care. They also extend a warm thank you to the staff at Fort Macleod Extendicare whose daily kindnesses were always noticed and made every day just a little brighter. Memorials in Ken’s name shall be gratefully accepted by the Fort Macleod HandiBus Society, PO Box 881, Fort Macleod, Alberta T0L 0Z0, or a charity of your choice.

MOWERS

Vilo LAREE Mowers (Adams), of Coaldale passed away peacefully at the St. Michaels Palliative Care Centre on Sunday July 17, 2016 at the age of 75 years.

She is lovingly remembered by her children: Stephen (Debra) Mowers of Medicine Hat and AvaMay (Bill) Marlow of Airdrie. She is also survived by her grandchildren Justin (Danielle) Mowers, Jolayne (Nikolas) Miller; Jodi Mowers; as well as Logan and Layne Marlow. Special extended family near and far; many old and new friends, who were very near and dear to her, and so many wonderful memories of years gone by were reminisced heartfully with many smiles and laughter over the past short months since her illness.

LaRee was born on February 27, 1941 in Lethbridge Alberta to LaVor and Mildred Adams.

As a young girl her love of music with voice lessons, piano and organ studies became one of her lifelong defining characteristics.

In 1961 LaRee met her husband Ray Mowers working at Canada Packers and in the fall of 1966 Ray and LaRee took over the family grain farm in Glenwood, Alberta. During the next 24 years; raising a family in a close knit farming/ranching community gave LaRee much pride and gratitude. Gardening, with huge vegetable crops; vast and varied flower beds; and involvement within the community (contributing to the Glenwood Gleanings paper) as well as bus driving and her work at the United Irrigation District also culminated in her contributions to the history book of this institution; were tirelessly completed with pride. Again her musical contributions were demonstrated as one of the founding members of the “Harmonettes’ a local singing group who quickly became well known for the harmonies, laughter, and beautiful sounds within the community over the many years.

In 1990 LaRee and Ray retired to Coaldale where her gardening, music, and involvement of helping other’s continued. The summers were spent at Spider Lake Springs on Vancouver Island; ocean fishing, berry picking and canning for SO many of us to enjoy the labor of love these activities brought to LaRee – along with tending the ‘community gardens’ at the resort. In the winter LaRee’s gift to ensure that many close cousins, friends, and neighbors were cared for in their ‘latter years’ was a loving gift she maintained as a priority, no matter the need. Her love for her grandchildren was always evident; ensuring that she never missed a swim meet, hockey or baseball game, recital, lake and boating day, graduation or birthday; no matter where she had to travel to see any one of her five grandchildren was a blessing each of them will cherish.

After Rays passing in 2001, LaRee became even more involved with her church; a steadfast member of the choir, learning the handbells and volunteering her time tirelessly with the ‘kitchen gang’ and ‘decorating group’; filled her days. LaRee’s circle of friends both old and new: farm, island, and city – knew of her hard work and dedication to “serving” all those that she could leaving a positive reflection for all of us to cherish.

In lieu of flowers, LaRee and her family request your consideration of a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.

The family would like to sincerely thank ALL of the staff and care givers at the St. Michael’s Palliative Care Centre. Your respect, time, and caring nature was truly a blessing in the few short months we got to know you all, and the care you provided to LaRee, so very much appreciated.

A celebration of LaRee’s life will be held at the SOUTHMINSTER UNITED CHURCH, 1011 – 4th Ave. South, Lethbridge, on Tuesday, July 26th at 11:00 A.M., with Rev. James Grunden officiating. A luncheon will be held immediately after.

TRUSCOTT

1934-2016

GERALD “JERRY” EDMUND TRUSCOTT, of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Margaret Truscott, passed away at the St. Michael’s Health Centre – Palliative Care Unit, on Monday, July 18th, 2016 at the age of 82 years.

Along with his wife Marg, he is lovingly remembered by his stepdaughter Leslie (Jim) Lyon and stepson Brent Killins; grandchildren, Kyle Morrice, Courtney McDonald, Cassidy Lyon, Kaylee Moline (Josh Day Chief) and Cooper Lyon; great-grandson R.J. Moline; sister Joyce “Dode” (Ken) Cunningham and brother Ken (Nancy) Truscott; nieces, Laurie (Tony) Carpenter, Lana Tate, Cynthia (Lonne) Culhane, Kristin (Kurt) Phippen and Sienna Aeillo; nephews, Jason Aeillo and Cameron Sorensen (Brigette Fidler). Jerry was also known as “Uncle Jerry” to the Elmore family.

He was predeceased by his parents, George Edmund Truscott and Dorothy (nee Craig) Truscott, stepmother Ruby (Cox) Truscott and his “ant”, Ethel Truscott as well as his very good friends, nephew-in-law Doug Tate and brother-in-law Don Watson.

Jerry was born on April 22, 1934 at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon, SK. He lived in Tessier, SK until he graduated. Jerry obtained his B of Ed from the U of S while working as a surveyor. He taught school at Indian Head, Yorkton and Saskatoon, SK before moving to Lethbridge in 1963. Jerry taught math at LCI and WCHS over the next 26 years. In 1964, he earned his private pilot’s license and was still hoping to skydive this year.

Jerry and Marg met at a Lethbridge Bronco hockey game and later found out it was “a setup” by mutual friends. He always joked that they all still remained friends. Jerry and Marg married in 1978 and over many years, were active supporters of the Bronco/Hurricane teams as season ticket and shareholders. They enjoyed playing crib, Mexican Train and Hearts when they got together with Jerry’s dad, sister and brother. Jerry and Marg had good years of travelling, spending time with friends and were happy just hanging out together at home; still holding hands after over 37 years together.

Jerry had a great interest in WWI and WWII history and travelled to Europe several times. He also loved collecting, telling “Jerry” jokes, reading, cars, beer, peanut butter and apple pie. His favourite song was “Imagine” by John Lennon. He was a diehard Rider fan for over 50 years and a proud owner of “One Class A Share”.

His greatest joy was watching his grandchildren grow up. Jerry cheered them on in all of their endeavours and encouraged them to get a good education. He taught them to play crib and they all tried their best to beat the “master”. His great-grandson RJ, brought him much joy and he loved RJ’s drawings.

Jerry was a big man with a big voice and heart. He faced cancer with a positive attitude and this carried over to the Palliative Care Unit, where he continued to be his cheerful, joking self. He appreciated the staff and called them all by their first names.

Thank you to all the doctors and caretakers who were involved in Jerry’s care. You were exceptional. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Colin Walsh for your daily visits with Jerry; they brought him so much comfort.

A Celebration of Life with family and friends will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers and in memory of Jerry, donations are gratefully accepted to the St. Michael’s Health Centre, Palliative Care Unit, 1400-9th Ave South, Lethbridge, AB, T1J 4V5.
