Donalda Berger

1934 – 2016

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our best friend, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Dona (Donalda) Blanche Berger. Mom passed away peacefully the morning of Thursday, May 12, 2016 after having surgery to repair a broken hip. Mom was ready to go and had been asking God to take her for the last few of her days. She will be missed by all who had been blessed to know her. She touched many lives and made everyone around her feel special and loved. People often commented on how much love was felt in her home. She made everyone feel welcome. Mom’s life had been dedicated solely to her family. She attended as many hockey, soccer and football games, plays, Christmas concerts, skateboarding competitions, birthday parties, celebrations for any and all occasions that she possibly could. She was supportive of anything and everything that her family was doing. Mom was an avid reader and card player – she played to win and she loved to play. She also loved to travel, bake (her gingersnaps were world famous) and spend time with her family. She and Dad put many happy miles on their old motorhome back in the day. Her and dad lived life to the fullest and has as much fun as they could. She is survived by her son Doug Berger; and daughters Rhonda Berger and Sonja Baker. She also had many living grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Rhonda and Macky’s children: Chaylene Feuser, her husband Corey and their children, Riian, Addisyn and Cason, Shenny Grimard, her husband Don and their children, Navie and Aspen, and Brady and Denny Houle, and Sonja and Willie’s children: Levi, Kaelan and Jaden Baker. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Peter Berger in 2000. Our lives will be forever changed by this loss but she will live on in our memories and every time we play a game of cards, bake her cookies, make her potatoes Romanoff or round dogs. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

SWEETGRASS

HARVEY SR. SWEETGRASS, beloved husband of Adeline Sweetgrass, of the Blood Reserve, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Friday, May 20th, 2016 at the age of 62 years.

Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his children: MJ (Johnathan) Williams, Charlene (Quentin) Sweetgrass, Lynn (Rodrigo) Sweetgrass, Harvey Jr. Sweetgrass, Kyle Sr. (Lisa) Sweetgrass, Zachary Sweetgrass, and 11 grandchildren. He is also survived by his adopted daughters: Jasmine & Kristin Blood, and Shawna & Deanna Dayrider.

He is survived by his brothers: Butch Knife and Steven Crying Head; his sisters Joan Crying Head, Jackie Crying Head, Doreen Crying Head, Carol Crying Head and Crystal Curly Rider; his aunts Isabel Healy, Elizabeth (Martin) Vielle and Elsie First Rider.

He was predeceased by his dad John Sr. Sweetgrass; his sisters: Sylvia Crying Head and Verna Sweetgrass; his brothers: John Jr. Sweetgrass, Mickey Day Rider and Clifford Sweetgrass.

Harvey was born in Cardston, on July 2, 1953. At the age of five, his unfathomable work ethic started when his dad had him working on the family farm, he knew how to seed the land, brand cows, sheer sheep, tend to horses. This experience helped him gain even more knowledge later as an electrician, welder, carpenter and mechanic. To this day, his family remains the only family to have farmed their own land on the Blood Reserve. He was an excellent horseman, being one of the first and one of the last old time ranchers on the Blood Reserve. He worked hard to provide for his family, working in many different fields, including time at City Packers, Napi Lodge as an Addictions Counsellor, Kookoonoon Group Home as a Child and Youth worker, BTAP (where he was the first to obtain a certificate as a Pivot Operator and instrumental in the early stages of BTAP) and Ability Resource Centre as a Community Resource Worker. He gained the trust and respect of his clients, he sincerely enjoyed working with his clients at the Ability Resource Centre.

His hobbies included garage and auction sales, solving puzzles, shopping at the Western Stockman, dancing with his wife and going to Rodeos. He liked hunting and fishing with his sons, friends and grandchildren and travelling/camping with his family. At Easter, he would mastermind a complex Easter Egg Hunt for his kids and grandkids.

Even at 62 years of age, he was asked if he dyed his hair because he had few grey hairs. He believed in not worrying and knew he would come up with the solution in the future that would help.

His horses were his pride and joy; Appaloosa’s were his favourite horse. He collected different animals such as pot-belly pigs, llamas, miniature goats and Shetland ponies. He named his cats Kitty and Missy Kitty and wanted to name the next cat “Kitty Kat.”

He was very generous, trustworthy, thoughtful, respectful, strong-willed and determined. Friendly to everyone, he had a great sense of humour and was known for his unconditional love. He was always eager to help anyone. He enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren; what his grandchildren wanted was what he wanted for them. He thought of people’s well-being before he thought of himself. He loved to start off the day with Tim Horton’s coffee and end the day next to his wife, Adeline. He believed any man should provide for his family and work for what they needed and wanted. He bestowed this work ethic onto his children.

A Funeral Service will be held at the SOUTH HILL CHAPEL – 348 3rd Street West, Cardston, AB. on Wednesday, May 25th, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. with President Garry Fox officiating.

Interment will be held at the Sweetgrass Ranch.

George F. Varzari

1926 – 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George F. Varzari of Lethbridge on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at the age of 89 years. After a lengthy period of declining health George passed away peacefully. He was predeceased a short time prior by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary. George is lovingly remembered by his son Glenn (Janice) and daughter Cory as well as his granddaughters Jennifer (Nick Noronha) and Cara (Quintin Pike). He is also loved and remembered by his great granddaughter Kya and great grandsons Omari and Reon, his brother Mike (Cutzo) Varzari, cousins Dave (Steamer) Ursan, David Ursan Jr., Vicky Davies, and Sandy (Brock Winter), as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Mary, George was predeceased by his brother Bill (Beaver) Varzari.

George was a successful business man. He started his business 65 years ago and grew National Salvage from a tiny start up business to a thriving recycling business that is now working in international markets. He was self-educated and loved to read. From his reading he applied his knowledge to improving his skills and growing his business. He was an ambitious and dedicated employer and was respected by colleagues and friends. He generously supported the community in the areas of the arts, secondary and post-secondary education, health care, and youth sports. He encouraged others to support the community in any way that they could. He was a proud Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow.

Many would say George was a dreamer, but he was able to make his dreams a reality. He was a man of both ideas and action. He built Crown Shows, a children’s carnival complete with a ferris wheel, roller coaster, and candy floss and travelled to small town rodeos in southern Alberta. He designed and supervised the building of a 32-foot motor home and he and Mary camped throughout Southern Alberta, British Columbia, and the United States.

George, together with Mary, loved to travel and experience new cultures. Along with Cory, they travelled extensively through Eastern Canada, Europe, Southeast Asia, and Australia. Hawaii was their second home. For over 25 years they spent six wonderful months of the year in their condominium in Waikiki. George and Mary made many new friends there. George enjoyed his daily morning coffee at Ala Moana Mall where he met with other retired businessmen and tried to solve the problems of the world. He and Mary welcomed many family members and friends from Southern Alberta to their Hawaii home with their Aloha spirit, delicious homemade meals, and guided tours of Oahu. During his retirement George took a keen interest in computers and was an avid student in the LSCO computer club. He enjoyed keeping in touch with family and friends by email and exploring the web for new information.

George was a gentle man who loved his family dearly. He was a man of few words, a good listener and generous hugger, and was never afraid to show vulnerability or emotion. He lived his last few years in Fairmont Extendicare where he always had a warm hello and candy to offer his caregivers. Instead of flowers, George would want you to hug your loved ones and tell them that you love them.

A Celebration of George’s Life will be held on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Anton’s Room at Lethbridge Lodge (320 Scenic Drive South) with a short program at 3:00 pm.

Larry Merkley

April 12, 1943 – May 22, 2016

Larry Merkley, age 73, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Sunday, May 22, due to complications following a ruptured brain aneurysm. He was born April 12, 1943 in Magrath, Alberta to Calvin and Verona Merkley. In 1967 he began his life’s greatest adventure, marrying his sweetheart, Beverly Hamilton. They were blessed with five children, splitting their time between Canada and the US in their nearly 49 years together. Larry’s varied career path, membership in the LDS church, and work in Alberta scouting organizations gave him many leadership opportunities. He began in the financial world, moved into the university academic world of instruction and administration, failed retirement four times and enjoyed the consulting world for the past several years.

A great lover of music and books, mountains and waterfalls, travels and adventures, movies and ice cream, Larry especially enjoyed the people he worked with, and all he shared his life with. He was known as a man of integrity, curiosity, and a balance of high expectations and acceptance, with the ability to “create order out of chaos,” always knowing “there were no small projects.” He taught his children from a young age that “it is more important to be kind than to be right.”

Larry is survived by his wife Bev, sister DiAnn Hirsche (Bruce), brother Al Merkley (Jeri), in-laws Judy Whitehead (Ritchie), Burke Hamilton (Marcene), Donald Hamilton (Elinor), and Denise Sugden (Richard). He will be forever loved and greatly missed by his children, David Merkley (Tammy), Melanie Lafranca (Steven), Valerie O’Barr (Kevin), LoraLee Laycock (Peter), Kim Leishman (Jesse), and by his grandchildren, Conner & Tyler Merkley, Natalie & Taylor Lafranca, Leah, Clara & Elsie O’Barr, Rayanne, Shelby & Anthony Laycock, and Talia, Mila & Declan Leishman.

We will be celebrating his life in a memorial service at a future date this summer at the LDS Chapel in Waterton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kiva organization (www.kiva.org), a favorite of Larry’s because it supports small business around the world.

George F. Varzari

VIVIAN KNOX Feb 22, 1917 – May 17, 2016

Although not raised in a loving home Vivian chose to be loving, joyful, inclusive, and adventurous throughout her life. Kindness was woven tightly into the fabric of her being. Long term Alzheimer’s did not alter her humour, her love, or her gratitude to family and to the wonderful caregivers at Fairmont Extendicare. She never failed to say, “I love you so much! I’m so glad you’re here” whenever a family member came to visit. At 99 years of age, surrounded by family, she surfaced through the fog of Alzheimer’s one last time, smiled with delight and said, “I love you. You are so beautiful”. Evelyn Mary Payne

September 13, 1921 – April 28, 2016

Our mother loved a good joke, took great pleasure in playing piano and singing, but most of all she loved people. Evelyn (Lynn) Mary Payne, a proud resident of the Kipnes Veterans Centre, passed away April 28, 2016 at the age of 94 years.

Born on September 13th 1921, Lynn grew up in Eastbourne, Sussex, England. She studied nursing, but before graduating chose to join the British army. Stationed at Benfleet she was a member of the 461 Searchlight Battery, Royal Sussex Regiment. It was during the war she met and married a Canadian, Robert (Bob) Oliver Payne. While England was her birthplace, Canada became her true home.

Lynn and Bob started their life together in the Crowsnest Pass and over the years lived in British Columbia and Alberta. In Kimberley B.C. they owned a bus line, and Lynn was one of the first women licenced to drive the large buses. Moving to Coleman in the Crowsnest Pass in 1967, they returned to the place they loved most. Lynn became an integral member of the community establishing life-long friendships.

At age 87, Lynn’s arthritis dictated that she no longer drive and she moved to Edmonton to be closer to her family. She embraced her new home, making new friends. When the arthritis required new decisions, Lynn moved to the Kipnes Veterans Centre.

Left to celebrate Lynn’s life are her children, Eric (Lyn) Payne of Adelaide South Australia, Boyd (Lynette) Payne of Calgary Alberta, Maureen Ondrus of Edmonton Alberta; her grandchildren, Danielle, Jordana, Jared, Dan, Josh, Cathy, Alison and Alex; her great grandchildren, Liana, Sophia, Elijah, Grayson, Zach, Carter and William; her brother, David (Takami) Weaver of St Albans England; her nieces and nephew, Janet, Martin and Charlotte; and extended family and loving friends.

She was predeceased by her much loved husband Bob; her sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Alan Harris; her parents, Frank and Dorothy Weaver; and her son-in-law, Ted Ondrus.

A special thank you to the staff at Kipnes for their respect, kindness and care for Lynn, and to all serving military, past and present, for their dedication and commitment.

A Celebration of Life will be held at First Memorial Harmony (10541 – 81 Ave. Edmonton) on Saturday, June 11, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. Hers was a life well lived, full of laughter, and her life enriched all of ours. Go in Peace.

Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website http://www.hainstockedmonton.com.

SINCLAIR

VIRGINIA MARY SINCLAIR was peacefully called home by her Lord on May 25th, 2016 at the age of 94 years.

Virginia was born on March 8th, 1922 in Taber Alberta to John Wesley Fallon and Elva Dell Pickett. She was the one of six children. Irene, Bud, Jerrald, Lynn and Patricia.

She married David Sinclair in 1940. David was in the army and was sent overseas. Shortly after this Virginia also joined the army. She was stationed in Calgary as a payroll clerk. After the war Virginia and David started a family. They had three children, Glen, Patricia, and John.

Virginia worked at Central School and then Dr. Hammond school until her retirement. She is often fondly remembered by so many past staff and students for her helpful nature.

Virginia is best remembered for her giving, and never saying no to anyone. She was an active member of the LDS church, the Taber Legion, Parkside Manor senior centre, and Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She was always driven to do for others, planning trips, organizing Parkside dinners or the annual seniors week shows and just about anything else that needed doing which included peeling many potatoes. She was proud to have been chosen as Taber’s Senior Citizen of the year. Ginny, as she was affectionately called by many was also known for always having a quilt on the go and every family member cherished the handmade quilts they received at Christmas time. Her upstairs was filled with boxes of little squares of fabric waiting to be arranged into one of her masterpieces. She was a frugal person who didn’t like to waste anything.

She was devoted to researching her Genealogy and enjoyed many trips with her daughter Pat to investigate family histories. Her Genealogy collection would be the envy of even hard core Genealogy buffs.

Sadly Virginia lost so many loved ones in her life and only her faith helped her survive those losses. She was predeceased by her Father John, Mother Elva, sister Irene, her infant son Glen, husband David, daughter Pat, brothers Bud and Jerrald, uncle Charles Sinclair and brother-in-law Hans Von Chorus. Though she had many losses Virginia never felt sorry for herself and went on doing for others.

She is survived by her son John (Gloria), grandson Jason (Karen), brother Lynn (Beryl) Layton, sister Patricia Von Chorus as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins which all held a special place in her heart.

She was well known for her writing of poems, and stories for many a program. One of her favorite accomplishments was compiling the Golden book of Memories to commemorate Central school. She still has a brick from that old school.

In her later years Virginia enjoyed her friends and playing cards at Parkside. She loved going on excursions with the other seniors.

Virginia lived a full life and will be missed by everyone whose life she touched. It is with great sadness and fond memories we say goodbye to our Virginia.

Special thanks must be given to the doctors and nursing staff at the Taber Hospital for the care, compassion, and dignity shown Virginia and her family in her last days. We cannot thank them enough.

The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5314-54 Street, Taber.

Interment to follow in the Taber Memorial Gardens.
