NOGAMINE

It is with great sadness that the family of Reiko Nogamine announce her passing on Friday, August 31, 2018 at the age of 83 years with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of Shigeru Nogamine of Lethbridge, loving mother of Mary (Ken Nishi) of Calgary and Bachan to Jordan, Carly and Kevin Nishi. She is also survived by her brothers Shinobu (Tamiko) of Osaka, Japan; Tom (Setsuko) of Lethbridge and Tsukasa (Chiyoko) of Miyazaki, Japan and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Jim, parents Yukichi and Fumi, brother Isamu and sister Kyoko.

Reiko was born on April 1, 1935 in Kagoshima, Japan. She and Shigeru with Jim and Mary immigrated to the Vauxhall area in September, 1967 as part of the first group of Japanese to be allowed to immigrate to Canada, post-war. This group formed their extended “Canadian family” and in 2017, they celebrated their 50th anniversary of being in Canada with their children and grandchildren. They lived and worked in the Vauxhall and Taber area from 1967 – 1976 after which they bought their own farm west of Burdett. They farmed from 1976 to 2007. She also worked outside the farm at Shimbashi’s and Lamb Weston potato facilities where she made many friends – celebrating their birthdays with gifts of home made sushi, pickles and desserts.

She was an avid gardener throughout her life – toiling for hours to produce bountiful amounts of vegetables which she generously shared with her family, friends and neighbours. She was also known for the many kinds of Japanese pickles – tsukemono which she also shared with family and friends.

After retirement, they moved to Lethbridge, where the back yard did not provide enough room to grow all the produce she wanted to grow, so they rented a community garden plot to continue to produce enough vegetables to share. She was a hard working, caring and generous person, always thinking of others before herself and always calling to see how the grandkids were doing in school and whether they got home safely from their many school and sporting events and their commutes to university. She always had delicious Japanese meals ready to eat whenever the grandkids would visit with extra home made munju and sushi to take home with them.

Friends may meet with the family on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at CHRISTENSEN SALMON GENERATIONS FUNERAL HOME, 703 – 13 Street North, Lethbridge.

WEASEL MOCCASIN

DELORES WEASEL MOCCASIN (nee Mountain Horse), A’paissaapiaakii passed away peacefully surrounded by her husband Peter Weasel Moccasin and her children, as the sun dawned, in Lethbridge, AB on Monday, August 27, 2018 at the age of 63 years. Delores was born in Cardston, AB, was raised and resided on the Blood Reserve, AB. Delores was raised by her maternal Grandmother Aahkiaapikkitstaakii, Annie Mountain Horse (nee Crow Chief). Born on March 2, 1955, Delores was the only daughter to Pete Standing Alone and Shirley Mountain Horse; respectively between her parents, she was blessed with numerous siblings.

Delores became a mother to Marcia and Crystal and she raised her girls as a single mother until 1988 when she met the love of her life Peter Weasel Moccasin. For Delores, Marcia and Crystal, the blessing of love, laughter, strength and commitment from Peter was more than they could wish for. Along with Peter joining Delores’s family, she gained a son, Garrett. Together, Delores and Peter’s family continued to grow with their son Dwight and daughter Mikayla. From the lives of their children, Delores was a cherished and attentive Grandmother to Cole, Tristan, Raiden, Karsen, Jakob, Dashal, Kai, Luca and Dregan. Delores’s early life brought many memories with her Grandmother, family and friends growing up in the Blood Reserve community of Moses Lake. Aahkiaapikkitstaakii kept Delores at home from school up to the age of eight years old before attending St. Paul’s Residential School. Her early schooling also included schools in Magrath and Cardston; she graduated from Cardston High School in 1973. Upon graduation she briefly attended Mount Royal College before she began her long time career with Blood Tribe Administration (BTA). Delores began working for BTA at the age of nineteen, at the time of her passing she was employed with Blood Tribe Public Works, thus she gave forty-four years of dedication to her community’s administration.

Delores’s greatest commitment to her community came in 1982, at the age of 27, when she was approached by Rosella White Feathers to join the Moa’to’kiiksi (Buffalo Women’s Society). Having been raised with Niitsitapiipaitapiiyssin (traditional life ways of the Blackfoot people), Delores understood it was time to carry on this life her Grandmother Aahkiaapikkitstaakii lived; with a good heart she took on this responsibility. Delores was a member of the Moa’to’kiiksi for eight years and in 1990 she transferred to Rita Tallman. One of her early mentors, Mark Old Shoes Sr., prepared Delores for the life of ceremony she would embark upon. It was through Mark’s eternal guidance that Delores and Peter came together.

Delores and Peter were married on November 10, 1990 and in 1994 together they joined the Iitsskinnayiiks (Sacred Horn Society) with their partner Bob Burns as bundle holders of Piino’toiyi. They were holders of the bundle for four years and in 1998 transferred to Norbert and Mary Louise Fox. In 1995, Delores and Peter were gifted the opportunity to become Niinaimsskaiksi (Thunder pipe bundle holders). Along with two of their five children, Crystal and Dwight, they were transferred the bundle Sinai’ahkoyinnimaan. As a family, they were holders of Sinai’ahkoyinnimaan for five years; they transferred the bundle in 2000 to Leo and Elizabeth Day Chief. From the many years of being involved in our sacred societies and their commitment to a sacred way of life, together Delores and Peter are called upon for guidance in the community. Delores is survived by her father Pete Standing Alone (Betty Bastien), her husband Peter Weasel Moccasin; her children, Marcia (Aloyuisius) Black Water, Crystal Mountain Horse (Dillon Soldier), Garrett Weasel Moccasin, Dwight (Camina) Weasel Moccasin, Mikayla Weasel Moccasin; daughter-in-law Tricia “Sunshine” Weasel Moccasin; grandchildren Cole, Tristan and Karsen Black Water; Jakob and Dashal Soldier; Raiden and Kai Weasel Moccasin; Dregan Weasel Moccasin; Luca Weasel Moccasin; maternal siblings Brent Singer (Mavis Smith), Alvine Mountain Horse, Ivan Singer (Kailey Shade), Carolyn Weasel Fat, Ray Mountain Horse, Marvin Singer and sister-in-law Roana Weasel Head; paternal siblings Rowena Standing Alone, Travis Plaited Hair (Veronica Calf Robe), Bruce Standing Alone, Pat (Dawn) Standing Alone, Sally Plaited Hair, Lyle Standing Alone, Blake (Wendy) Standing Alone, Fagan Standing Alone (Jolie Weasel Head); special friends (adopted family) Marie and Don Shade, Bob and Charlene Burns, Tyson and Lona Running Wolf, Wendy Bremner; sisters-in-law Joyce Old Shoes and Lauretta Many Bears; aunts May Weasel Fat, Sophie Tailfeathers, Ruth Quesnelle (Carmen McLenaghan), Nita Wells, Theresa Mistaken Chief, Nina (Eric) Buckskin , Yvonne Morning Bird; uncles Alfred Standing Alone, Jerry Wells, Gordon (Natalie) Morning Bird, Bernard (Agnes) Shouting; special cousins Alphonse (Marilyn) Standing Alone, Joanne Mountain Horse-Twigg, Sandra Singer (Barney Day Chief).

Delores was predeceased by her maternal grandparents Annie Mountain Horse and Jim Wells Sr., paternal grandparents Henry and Louise Standing Alone; her mother Shirley Mountain Horse; stepfather Reid Singer; stepsister Lori Shade, brother Michael Mountain Horse, brothers-in-law Michael “Binky” Weasel Fat and Narcisse Blood; aunts Ada Fox, Margaret Good Rider, Florence Brave Rock, Shirley Calf Robe, Anna Wells and Joan Wells; uncles Andy Standing Alone, Allen Standing Alone; Wallace Mountain Horse Sr., Jimmy Wells Jr., Edwin Wells, Jordan Wells and Nap Black Rabbit.

SILAS BENJAMIN MOSES GINN

July 27th, 1973 – August 31, 2018

Born in Toronto and lived in Vancouver, Grande Prairie, Ft. McMurray, Calgary and Lethbridge.

It is with the deepest of sorrow that we share the passing of Silas, beloved son of Elizabeth M. Ginn and brother to Muffy McKay and uncle to nephews Auren McKay and Benjamin McKay. Silas also leaves his sister Amanda Perillo and her family in Seattle, WA, and many relatives in Ontario. He also leaves his step-daughter Ever Mee in B.C.

His death has left us all in shock and happened very quickly due to complications from illness. Silas was looking forward to the future and talked about travelling with his Mom this month back to Fogo Island, Nfld and Labrador.

Always a friend to those in need, including his beloved dog Charlie and family dogs over the years; his beloved cat Kermode and others in the rescue of the Last Chance Cat Ranch, Silas was always there to help animals in need. From a very young age, he rescued reptiles, fish, rabbits and spiders. A passionate Vegan for the majority of his life, he saw no purpose in treating all creatures, including flies, without respect for their lives. He loved gardening and caring for his many houseplants. Animal companions aside, he was a friend to many. Silas was a compassionate, giving and caring guy.

He was also passionate about motorcycles and was working on rebuilding some. He belonged to a Motorcycle Forum that had members all over the world. Condolences are coming in from South Africa, Great Britain, Europe and all-over North America. He had an incredible gift for writing and had been encouraged to write and publish by many, including former teachers in high school and college.

Silas suffered from a debilitating back injury for the past 20 years and yet was always there to help those in need. He was grateful for what he had and supported his mother in her endeavors as an artist and writer. A gifted mind, a stable and passionate love for the earth, Silas distained the acquisition of material wealth in absence of concern for the vulnerable. He leaves a next to zero carbon footprint as he was a fanatic recycler, but he does leave a large footprint on the hearts of many.

Silas did not want a funeral per se. He opted for a green ending with his ashes to become the strength for the growth of a tree. A celebration of his life will take place at a later date for family and friends.

At an early age, Eddy was stricken with polio. His right leg and torso were in a full plaster cast. He was unable to participate in any childhood activities. A doctor suggested to Eddy’s mother that riding horses would be good therapy for him, so Roanie was purchased for twenty dollars by his mother, who also got him a job herding one hundred head of cows which were grazed on open prairie north of Taber. He was paid fifteen a month.
Eddy was a talented calf roper, artist, singer, historian, writer, speaker and he loved to dance. He had several articles published in various magazines and had an article written about him in Cornelson’s publication Antelope Trails (2007). He had an article published in the Canadian Cattleman’s (two installments) about the history of the quarter horse.
Eddy completed grade twelve at W.R. Myer’s High School, attended Cal Poly Tech in San Luis Obispo, California where he completed a horse shoeing course and started team roping. He shod horses for several years, then worked for the federal government as a produce inspector.
In 1965 Eddy married Patricia Rombough and started raising registered quarter horses. Over the years, they received many awards for their horses, many trophies, belt buckles and saddles for competition on the Rodeo circuit (both Eddy and Pat). He was the founding member of the Sugar Town Saddle Club, the Taber Roping Club, Taber Equestrian Club, Southern Alberta Roping and Riding Clubs, Chinook Rodeo Association and the Taber Exhibition Association. Eddy and Pat’s greatest accomplishment was receiving the Legacy award from the American Quarter Horse Association for fifty years of raising registered Quarter Horses.
Eddy had many friends and family who loved him dearly. If you wanted to know anything about the Taber area or horses he was the man to talk to. Eddy was a loving husband, brother and friend. He loved children. He always had time for coffee with family and friends at McDonald’s. Eddy always had time for his wife and her needs at the extended care. He was one of a kind. The world needs more good people like Eddy Sparks. He would probably say to everyone, “happy trails to you till we meet again”.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Eddy’s name may be made directly to STARS, 1441 Aviation Park NE, PO Box 570, Calgary, Alberta T2E 8M7 (http://www.stars.ca).

Condolences can be sent to http://www.evergreenfh.ca

MAY, Kenneth Lloyd

April 17, 1942 on the farm near Dunrea, Manitoba to August 27, 2018 at Pincher Creek, Alberta

Ken passed away peacefully on August 27, 2018 at the age of 76 after a long and courageous struggle with blood cancer. He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Mary (nee Elliot), his loving children, Deanne (Cameron) Bertsch, Shannon (Keith) MacMillan, and Devon (Stephanie) May as well as his cherished grandchildren, Tavia and Kiara Bertsch, Catriona and Carson MacMillan and Emmy and Nathan May. Ken is also survived by his siblings, Gerald May, Claire (Lies) Van Marion, Marion (Jack) McKay and Arlene McKnight as well as many nieces and nephews. Ken was predeceased by his parents, Earl and Elsie May, and his sisters, Diane and Lillian May.

Ken had many adventures growing up on the farm where he learned to work hard, love nature and value his education in the one room school. He developed a passion for sports which lasted throughout his lifetime, baseball in his early school days followed by football in high school. He was passionate about the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and eventually transferred this passion to the Calgary Stampeders. His sisters taught him to jive and Mary loved nothing better than jiving with Ken.

Ken graduated from high school in Killarney, Manitoba as valedictorian, in 1960. In 1963 he graduated from Brandon College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. He taught on permit for two years in Miniota, Manitoba before attending Simon Fraser University for his Bachelor of Education degree. It was there he met Mary and they were married in Vancouver on July 22, 1967. Ken persuaded Mary to leave the grey skies of Vancouver behind and move to sunny Manitoba where they lived and taught in small towns for eight years. Ken moved to Lethbridge, Alberta in 1975 with his family, which now included three children, to teach Mathematics at Winston Churchill High School. Ken obtained his Masters degree in Math and Science education over the course of three summers at U.B.C. He had a memorable year teaching on exchange in Melbourne, Australia in 1981.

Ken was an exceptional teacher whose greatest strength was his ability to relate to his students and to help them to develop a love of math. He was often found helping individual students after school or around the dining room table at home. He was proud to have taught each of his three children calculus in their grade 12 year. Ken was instrumental in establishing the International Baccalaureate Program at Churchill. He was also very involved in extra-curricular activities including coaching baseball, ski club organizer, Reach for the Top coach and debate club organizer. He served as a vice-principal at Churchill for seven years.

Above all, Ken was a loving husband and father who cared deeply about his wife, children and grandchildren and always put his family first. He had a great sense of humour and made Mary laugh every day. They shared many common interests including hiking, skiing, tennis, camping, curling and bridge. When they retired in 2000, Ken and Mary moved to their mountain cabin in Beaver Mines. They have been fortunate to travel the world with several trips to Europe, Australia, New Zealand and exciting cruises to far flung places like South America. He fell in love with Arizona twelve years ago and loved his winter home in the sun at Greenfield Village in Mesa.

In recent years, Ken became passionate about duplicate bridge, attending tournaments, taking lessons and becoming a director. He loved playing bridge with good friends in the Pincher Creek Duplicate Bridge Club and longtime friends in Lethbridge.

Ken’s zest for life, positive energy and kindness are qualities which we will remember always. His inner peace and acceptance of his health condition were an example to us all. Ken, we will love you forever.

A memorial service to celebrate Ken’s life will be held at Pincher Creek Community Hall (287 Canyon Drive) on Saturday, September 15 at 11 AM with lunch to follow.. A very special thank you to Dr. Rommens and the caring staff at Pincher Creek Hospital. Ken’s opportunity to receive flexible transfusions during the last four years extended his life. We also want to thank Dr. Jenkins at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre for her expertise in treating Ken’s blood cancer over many years. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Windy Slopes Health Foundation, Box 2554, Pincher Creek, AB T0K1W0 or Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 29 St. NW, Calgary, AB T2N4N2.

ORMANDY

I Am Still With You

I give you this one thought to keep

I am with you still – do not weep

I am a thousand winds that blow

I am the diamond glints on snow

I am the sunlight on ripened grain

I am the gentle autumn’s rain

When you awaken in the morning hush

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circle flight

I am the soft stars that shine at night

Do not think of me as gone-

I am with you still – in each new dawn

WELLS

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dear sweet wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and auntie MARILYN (Ma’toomsaokaasis/Pokitsowaaki) MOSES/WEASEL HEAD/WELLS at the age of 62, who left peacefully in the early morning hours of September 13, 2018 surrounded by her loving family, friends and nursing staff at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital.

Left to mourn her passing: The love of her life husband Charlie Moses

Children: Wade, Jolie (Fagan), Lydia (Emerson), Sherri, Sheila (Ronnie), Shane Wells (Kristen)

Grand Children: Tay Lynne (J.C), Shalaine, Jadelyn, Branson, Heidi (Drake), Madison, Griffin, Chaliss, Lexus, Travis (Shanel), Tim Jr. (Jollen), Mia and Xavier.

Great Granddaughter: our sweet Ophelia

Daughter in Law: Shannon Day Chief

Marilyn (Ma’toomsaokaasis), was born March 16, 1956 in Cardston AB. She was raised on the Blood reserve spending her younger years in the farm four area with her siblings and numerous cousins from the Plume, Day Rider and Weasel Head families, where she shared with her children many humorous stories about growing up in farm four. She would always express how much she enjoyed living in farm four and would have loved to move back there. She lost her dad Pat Weasel Head Jr. at a young age and helped her mother with her younger siblings Tyrone, Randa, Puncho. Marilyn attended St. Mary’s residential school and then St. Mary’s day school. Her dislike of attending residential school would often lead her to “make a run for it” with her cousin/brother Godfrey W.H. and they would make their way through the bull horn area to home, that is where they received the nickname “The Runaways”. The bond she shared with her brothers Raymond and Edmond was special, the family eventually started calling them “The Triplets”. Marilyn was an avid athlete and a champion fancy dancer. She excelled in basketball, track and field and fastball in her teenage and part of her early adult years. Her mother Annie eventually packed them up and moved to Standoff and that is where Marilyn made her home. She travelled with her mother, Siblings, aunts and uncles to handgames around part of Canada and the US, that’s when she developed the love of playing handgames. Her accomplishments included attending life skills and she had various jobs which included, Blood Tribe recreation, special ed assistant with Standoff elementary school, Cashier with Standoff Superette, Spiritual advisor with St. Paul’s treatment centre, KBE PAC member and Social Development/Life Skills spiritual advisor. Proudest moments and accomplishments were when she became a mother. She met the love of her life in 1979 Charlie Moses and together they raised Wade, Jolie, Lydia, Sherri and Sheila. Her family was everything to her. Taking care of her children and raising them were the most important to her. She taught them her traditional ways of life because she was a strong believer in our ways. Her and her brother Fred, her sister Loretta joined the “Ninamsskaiiks” and were one of the youngest groups to join. She joined the Motokii Society and was a part of them for 16 yrs. In 2011, she lost her mother Annie Plume/W.H. and she took on the role of a mother and grandmother to her siblings, nieces and nephews. In her pastime Marilyn loved travelling to pow wow’s, playing bingo, casino. She loved barbeques and family gatherings. Her favorite though was handgames. This is where she met the love of her life Charlie Moses. When she became a grandparent, she was so happy and was very proud and loved everyone of her grand children. Marilyn became a great grandma in March 2017 to our dear sweet Ophelia and developed a special bond. Everytime Ophelia would visit with her, she would want to push grandma around on her wheel chair. Everyone knew they can turn to Marilyn for advice and prayers. She had a simple lifestyle and enjoyed visiting with her many family and friends especially Gloria Ann and Bella. Marilyn had a special kind of heart, love and showed compassion to everyone she knew. She will leave a void in everyone’s heart that she knew.

Leslie “Les” Conrad Toth

May 14, 1924 – September 13, 2018

Les was called home to be with his precious Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at the young age of 94.

No one would have ever guessed Les’ age. His youthfulness, passions and zest for life kept him young physically and at heart through his entire life.

Les was born in Diamond City, Alberta to Steve and Zsofia Toth. His early years were spent on the family farm with his 5 siblings: Elizabeth, Ella, Mary, Anne, and Steve; numerous cousins close by, his mom’s good Hungarian cooking, and devoted pets.

Les really loved school especially math and bookkeeping as well as school fairs, fieldtrips, and concerts.

Sports were an integral part of Les’ young adult years. Les played Back Catcher for the Shaughnessy Cadillacs Fastball team. No one came close to them. He also played hockey for the Lethbridge Maple Leaf’s. They captured the 1950 Western Canadian Championship and are best known for their gold medal win in the 1951 World Amateur Hockey Championship in Paris, France.

Les began his career at the Shaughnessy Mine at the age of 17 as a Slate picker to help his parents buy their first tractor. He was only down in the mine 5 or 6 months when he moved to the Storehouse giving out supplies and keeping inventory. Les was so well liked he was called to work in the office. At this time, he started business courses 3 nights/week at the Garbutt Business College in Lethbridge taking typing, bookkeeping, and later accounting and commercial law from International Correspondence Schools acquiring his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) as well as becoming a Notary Public. In 1942 he became comptroller – management for supervising accounting and finances, doing payroll for 400 men as well as other duties. Even today miners speak highly of Les and his care and concern for them as he treated them as family and say he was the best boss and Shaughnessy Mine was the best place to work. Les is an exceptional visionary and pursued his purposes with passion leaving a legacy wherever he went, with whatever he pursed.

After the mine closed in 1965 Les became Secretary Treasurer and then General Manager of the Lethbridge Northern Irrigation District (LNID). He introduced modern technology – water piped underground to eliminate seepage and water above ground in concrete lined canals, as well as a computerized supervisory control system for releasing and shutting off water from the head gates.

Les owned and operated a successful accounting and insurance business continuing the accounting to age 94.

At the Canadian Cooperative Wool Growers of Canada, he also became manager. He is proud of the wool baler press he designed and built which is still there today, as well as establishing a retail business of wool products and fashions.

Les’ heart and experience for mining led him to be a strong, unyielding advocate for the Galt #8 Mine in West Lethbridge. He was hugely active in the Galt #8 Mine Historic Site Society to restore the mine and create an international tourist attraction with 4D and live theaters, a glass front restaurant overlooking the river valley, banquet hall, and more. This passion kept him a very active President until his passing.

Les has always been a follower of Jesus Christ and a committed, active church goer. At Bethlen Hungarian Presbyterian Church he was an elder and created and delivered sermons in the ministers’ absence. Later at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church he was active on the Board of Managers and led a Promise Keepers bible study each Saturday morning. His heart was always to draw in the youth with activities and lead them to Jesus.

Les is a devoted family man and holds dear to his heart all his family as well as his friends. Les and his wife Lydia grew up on close neighbouring farms and in October of 1956 were married and were a few months short of celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary upon Lydia’s passing. Les loved the formal events he and Lydia attended.

Les and Lydia raised 2 beautiful children, Vivian and Calvin, and were blessed to enjoy many special and precious moments with them as well as with son-in-law Garry and their dearly loved granddaughters Rachelle, Tamara, Sasha; daughter-in-law Ildi and grandsons: Joshua, Jordan, Damon. There are so many precious times we could write of. Les had great fun planning a family trip to both Disneyland and Hawaii with Lydia, Vivian, and Calvin. Les loved being a part his family’s life and everything each member of the family were involved in. Les loved traditions like always going for Chinese food New Year’s Day. Special occasions held their special place in his heart as he enjoyed each moment. Les says his very favourite moments are times spent together with family around his table.

Les is already greatly missed and is loved forever by his daughter Vivian (Garry) Malmo and granddaughters: Rachelle, Tamara (Matthew) Eagles, Sasha; son Calvin (Ildiko) Toth and grandsons: Joshua, Jordan (Samara McIntosh), Damon; nieces, nephew, cousins, brothers and sisters in-law, more family, dear friends.

Dad’s favourite saying to us is “love you to infinity and way beyond”. “Dad, we love you to infinity and way beyond.”

Relatives and friends are welcome to meet with Les’ family at MARTIN BROTHERS FUNERAL CHAPEL, Friday, September 21, 2018 from 6:00pm to 9:00 pm.

A Celebration of Les’ life will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at ST. ANDREW’S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 1818 – 5th Avenue South. Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

Raymond Joseph Petit

1937-2018

Mr. Raymond “Peppy” Joseph Petit of Lethbridge passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Thursday September 20, 2018 at the age of 81.

Ray was born on April 10, 1937 in Antler, Saskatchewan to Denise and Cerile. He moved to Lethbridge in 1957 and quickly wove himself into the fabric of Southern Alberta. He married his wife Marlene (Park) in 1959 and they shared 37 wonderful years together raising their two daughters.

After Marlene’s passing in 1996, Ray was blessed to find love again. He married Ruby (Shaw) in 1998 enjoying 10 years together before her passing in 2008.

Ray lived his life in the service of others. After protecting our community for 34 years as a member of the Lethbridge Fire Department, Ray retired as a Platoon Chief in 1998. Ray also served since 1957 with the 20th Independent Field Battery, and as a Major taking command in 1975.

Ray was a proud NDP supporter. He volunteered countless hours and served over 30 years as Local Treasurer. He was proudly team orange long before it was cool to be so. He was a dedicated volunteer for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, and Lethbridge Military Museum among others.

Ray was an avid outdoorsman, and spent many cherished moments fishing his favorite spots in Beaver Mines and Duck Lake. He was also a huge sports fan, faithfully cheering on his Habs and Jays. He was a proud Lethbridge Hurricanes season ticket holder for over 30 years.

He will be terribly missed by his daughter, Monique Petit; granddaughter Nicole (Jason) and the sparkle of his eyes, his great granddaughters Brynnley, Callie, and Emslea Kowal. He is also survived by his stepchildren Judy (Kirk) Godlonton, Tim (Shelley) and Montie (Gerie) Shaw and their families.

He leaves behind sisters Joyce (Dennis) Hawes, Bertha Boutin, Marguerite (Steve) Kowbel and brother Roger (Beth) Petit, as well as the beloved Park family; Joe (Linda), Allan (Betty), Stuart (Bev), Lorna and Linda.

He was predeceased by his cherished wives Marlene, Ruby and daughter Michelle.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday September 27, 2018 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street S., Lethbridge, Alberta, followed by a Wake at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #4, 324 Mayor Magrath Drive South at 3:00 PM.
