RICHARDS

1929 – 2018

Margaret was born in Vancouver on Aug. 24, 1929 to Harley and Muriel Brown. It was here that Margaret met Tom, a young farmer living east of Coaldale. The couple married on Nov. 14, 1955, and Margaret gave up her big-city heritage for life in the country, spending nearly 35 years on a mixed farm northeast of Tempest. She and Tom moved to Coaldale in 1989, remaining there for most of Margaret’s last years.

Always young at heart, Margaret embraced computer technology. She produced store-quality greeting cards, enjoyed watching Netflix on her iPad, and went through a couple of iPhones. Recent injuries and illnesses slowed her a bit, but Margaret refused to be waited on or catered to. She continued to manage her household, maintain the books for her and Tom’s farm corporation, and remember and acknowledge the birthdays and anniversaries of family and friends.

In accordance with Margaret’s wishes, her immediate family will celebrate her life at a private gathering. They respectfully decline flowers, but encourage anyone wishing to memorialize Margaret to do so through a donation to the Lethbridge and District Humane Society at 2920 16th Ave. N., Lethbridge, Alta., T1H 5E9; 403-320-8991; pets4you2@hotmail.com.

JOAN A. HISEY December 23, 1925 – August 16, 2018

Joan was born in Devon (now Fredericton), New Brunswick and at the young age of 17 demonstrated her love of travel and sense of adventure by packing up her bags and moving to Ontario. She found employment as a ticket agent for Trans Canada Airlines (now Air Canada) and it was through this employment that she met her future husband Ken Hisey. He was dating one of her roommates at the time and according to him the first time Joan answered the phone he was smitten. They were married from 1949 – 1977 and during their 28 years together shared many happy and exciting times together. As was the norm for her time, Joan was a stay at home mom – albeit a non- traditional one – as her passions most definitely did not include cooking or cleaning! She and Ken were wonderful hosts and always very supportive of their daughters’ interests. She had a kind and generous spirit and was truly a class act. Joan was a lover of art, music, history, theatre and travel. She painted and produced lithographs, but particularly loved to work in clay and had Ken install a kiln in the garage at home and set up a potter’s wheel at the cottage. She audited art history university classes in the evening, leaving Ken in charge of the girls, regularly attended live theatre productions, visited art galleries and could jitterbug like no one else.

Both she and Ken shared a love for travel and every year she would take on the daunting task of coordinating a family trip. England, France, Italy, Germany, Florida and Mexico were just some of the places visited. Extensive research was completed in advance and time away always included a focus on history for her daughters and time spent mingling with the people living in these foreign lands. She was very dearly loved and will be fondly remembered by her two daughters Heather Hisey (Paul Jarvis) of Guelph, Ontario and Sue (Jay) Manery of Lethbridge, Alberta. Her grandchildren Anne Hisey (Ashlin) Snowdon and Adam Hisey Manery will treasure the special memories they have of their Grandma Joan. She will also be remembered with affection by Heather’s stepchildren, Evan and Hilary Jarvis (James Nicholson) and their son Everett. She is survived by her sister, Bonnie Irvine of Trenton, Ontario, Annelies Innerkofler of Amlach, Austria who was like a daughter to her, many extended family members and good friends. She was predeceased by her mother and stepfather, Anne and Warren Urquhart, her brother, Richard Day, and by her former husband Kenneth Clarke Hisey. The family is most appreciative to all who supported Mom in a kind and respectful manner during her last six years in Lethbridge. Our heartfelt thanks to Wendy James and BJ Milman-Fritz, with both of whom Mom shared a special bond. A tribute to Joan will be held in Lethbridge on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at the Galt Museum at 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for donations to support arthritis research. beatarthritis.ca Arthritis Research Foundation, 1001-522 University Ave. Toronto, ON CANADA M5G 1W7

ALICE STEED GIBB

October 31, 1924 – Aug 21, 2018

Alice was born to LeRoy and Adolene Pitcher She loved her Halloween birthday and made the most of it by trying it get the kids to believe she was a witch. However, due to her generous and unconditionally loving spirit, no one was ever convinced.

Alice was blessed with parents and siblings that were always there to provide unconditional assistance in times of need. Brothers Lorin, Melvin, Ted (deceased) and Sister Thelma (deceased). Lorin and Melvin were at her side until the end. We love them so much for that.

Growing up she worked on the farm at Woolford and participated in many track and field events. During the war she served as a secretary and typist for the Canadian Military.

Alice loved people, especially children and those in need. She had 7 children Patricia Rae (deceased) Mike, Dennis (Brenda),  Rod (deceased) (Sharon), Tim (Loni), Kevan, Jeff (Karen). She was blessed with 15 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren who were her greatest joy. Alice served in many capacities in her Church including the Relief Society Singing mothers. She started a playschool and worked with the Kindergarten for several years. She then joined the Green Acres foundation and Managed Golden Acres and Heritage Senior lodges until her retirement.

After her retirement she continued to care for her husband Wayne (deceased) her mother and her Grandkids. For many years she volunteered as a baby cuddler at the Lethbridge hospital. She was incredibly creative and made many costumes, quilts and knitted hundreds of winter hats for seniors and the homeless. She enjoyed gardening and was always canning and bottling fruits, vegetables, jams and jellies. She was an award winning baker of bread, buns, pies and cakes and always made sure everyone was fed.

We want to thank all the staff at the Lethbridge Good Sams cottage 6 for providing such loving care. Special thanks to Leanne.

ALICE STEED GIBB

October 31, 1924 – Aug 21, 2018

Alice was born to LeRoy and Adolene Pitcher She loved her Halloween birthday and made the most of it by trying to get the kids to believe she was a witch.

The Funeral Service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, MAGRATH STAKE CENTER (Corner of Centre St. and East 1 Ave. South) Magrath, AB on Monday, August 27th, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Friends may meet the family from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.

MAY, Kenneth Lloyd

April 17, 1942 on the farm near Dunrea, Manitoba to August 27, 2018 at Pincher Creek, Alberta

Ken passed away peacefully on August 27, 2018 at the age of 76 after a long and courageous struggle with blood cancer. He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Mary (nee Elliot), his loving children, Deanne (Cameron) Bertsch, Shannon (Keith) MacMillan, and Devon (Stephanie) May as well as his cherished grandchildren, Tavia and Kiara Bertsch, Catriona and Carson MacMillan and Emmy and Nathan May. Ken is also survived by his siblings, Gerald May, Claire (Lies) Van Marion, Marion (Jack) McKay and Arlene McKnight as well as many nieces and nephews. Ken was predeceased by his parents, Earl and Elsie May, and his sisters, Diane and Lillian May.

Ken had many adventures growing up on the farm where he learned to work hard, love nature and value his education in the one room school. He developed a passion for sports which lasted throughout his lifetime, baseball in his early school days followed by football in high school. He was passionate about the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and eventually transferred this passion to the Calgary Stampeders. His sisters taught him to jive and Mary loved nothing better than jiving with Ken.

Ken graduated from high school in Killarney, Manitoba as valedictorian, in 1960. In 1963 he graduated from Brandon College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. He taught on permit for two years in Miniota, Manitoba before attending Simon Fraser University for his Bachelor of Education degree. It was there he met Mary and they were married in Vancouver on July 22, 1967. Ken persuaded Mary to leave the grey skies of Vancouver behind and move to sunny Manitoba where they lived and taught in small towns for eight years. Ken moved to Lethbridge, Alberta in 1975 with his family, which now included three children, to teach Mathematics at Winston Churchill High School. Ken obtained his Masters degree in Math and Science education over the course of three summers at U.B.C. He had a memorable year teaching on exchange in Melbourne, Australia in 1981.

Ken was an exceptional teacher whose greatest strength was his ability to relate to his students and to help them to develop a love of math. He was often found helping individual students after school or around the dining room table at home. He was proud to have taught each of his three children calculus in their grade 12 year. Ken was instrumental in establishing the International Baccalaureate Program at Churchill. He was also very involved in extra-curricular activities including coaching baseball, ski club organizer, Reach for the Top coach and debate club organizer. He served as a vice-principal at Churchill for seven years.

Above all, Ken was a loving husband and father who cared deeply about his wife, children and grandchildren and always put his family first. He had a great sense of humour and made Mary laugh every day. They shared many common interests including hiking, skiing, tennis, camping, curling and bridge. When they retired in 2000, Ken and Mary moved to their mountain cabin in Beaver Mines. They have been fortunate to travel the world with several trips to Europe, Australia, New Zealand and exciting cruises to far flung places like South America. He fell in love with Arizona twelve years ago and loved his winter home in the sun at Greenfield Village in Mesa.

In recent years, Ken became passionate about duplicate bridge, attending tournaments, taking lessons and becoming a director. He loved playing bridge with good friends in the Pincher Creek Duplicate Bridge Club and longtime friends in Lethbridge.

Ken’s zest for life, positive energy and kindness are qualities which we will remember always. His inner peace and acceptance of his health condition were an example to us all. Ken, we will love you forever.

A memorial service to celebrate Ken’s life will be held at Pincher Creek Community Hall (287 Canyon Drive) on Saturday, September 15 at 11 AM with lunch to follow.. A very special thank you to Dr. Rommens and the caring staff at Pincher Creek Hospital. Ken’s opportunity to receive flexible transfusions during the last four years extended his life. We also want to thank Dr. Jenkins at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre for her expertise in treating Ken’s blood cancer over many years. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Windy Slopes Health Foundation, Box 2554, Pincher Creek, AB T0K1W0 or Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 29 St. NW, Calgary, AB T2N4N2.
