Fernande (Ferne) Terlesky

1921-2018

(nee Demers)

Fernande (Ferne) G Terlesky, born November 2, 1921, passed away peacefully just six weeks shy of 97 years on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Cedar Creek Adapt-A-Care, Lethbridge, Alberta. Ferne was born on a farm near East End, Saskatchewan and was number 8 of 12 children of Gracia Rousseau and Modeste Demers both of Quebec. During WWII she served as a Corporal in the RCAF, from 1942 to 1945 from Dartmouth NS to Victoria, BC, repairing plane wings, painting camouflage and packing parachutes. Following her marriage to Alex in 1948 she lived in Lethbridge, along with her close sister, Juliette, and many in-laws who were all well-known for their festive family gatherings. Mom’s life was about family, service and helping others. During this time, she was a volunteer with the Girl Guide/Brownie organization, CWL and Catholic Charities. She decorated birthday cakes for Edith Cavell Nursing Home and for a brief time she taught religion classes to children in a rural school. Mom loved bowling, playing bridge, self-taught arts and crafts, music and especially reading and learning. She was also one hot-shot horseshoe player. Mom was a woman characterized by deep faith (as attested to by her well-worn bible), wisdom, inner strength, intelligence, kindness, love, generosity, caring, humor and an eye for beauty. She had a love of cooking (including her famous soups), baking and gardening. She steadied all that knew her with these two sayings: “Have faith, and Just Trust!” She is survived by her two daughters, Frances (Lethbridge) and Jean (Kimberley, BC); sister, Estelle, of Philadelphia; grandchildren Brent Terlesky, Amber Terlesky and Liz Astin (Jeff) all of California; two “double” nieces, Bev Treleaven (John), of Sidney BC, and Dianne Arthur of Medicine Hat, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and a family friend Rob McIntyre of Kimberley, BC. Ferne was predeceased by her loving husband, Alex (Alexander) 1985, son Gary (California) 2015 and eleven siblings. The family would like to thank Wendy Stinn and Dawn Croft, her faithful friends, and Sharon Penton and staff of Cedar Creek Adapt-A-Care for their many years of extraordinary kindness and loving care in helping Mom deal with her many later-life challenges. Vigil Rites (Prayers) will be held on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 7:00 pm at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street S, Lethbridge, Alberta. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, October 5, 2018 at 9:00 am at ST. BASIL’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 604 – 13 Street N, Lethbridge, Alberta. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

Matt was born July 30, 1927 in Donja Obrijez, a small village in Croatia. He grew up the third of five siblings, having two brothers and two sisters. He was conscripted at a young age into the communist led Partisan military of Yugoslavia. Matt was eventually able to escape the authoritarian rule of his homeland and by 1957 had made his way to Canada settling in Taber. He convinced his future wife Maria, from the same Croatian province, to come to the new country which she did in 1962 and they had three children Myles, Emil and Lydia (1967-2013).
His greatest joy late in life was his now six year old grandson Jacob Daniel.
Matt had various occupations over the years but to town  residents he was most familiar, and sought after, with his own painting business. He always enjoyed fishing and good times with fellow countrymen, friends and family.  Matt was a devout Catholic and during his retired years volunteered as a member of the Knights of Columbus.
If friends so desire, a memorial tribute in Matt’s name may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 – 29 Street NW, Calgary, Alberta T2N 4N2 (http://www.albertacancer.ca).

He is survived by his loving wife Jenny, their sons Kim (Trina) Tymko of Lethbridge, Sheldon (Bee) Tymko of Taber and daughter Raylene Tymko of Lethbridge. He was a beloved Poppa to five grandchildren Jordan, Kalyna, Noah, Petra and Jayda. He is survived by one brother Barry Tymko of Calgary. Ray also shared his life and love with a wealth of relatives who cherished his time spent with them.
He was predeceased by his parents John and Ann Tymko, his brother Gordon Tymko, sister Joanne Kuprowski and an infant sister Ann Marie.
Ray was born May 23, 1946 in Wadena, Saskatchewan. He spent his school years there as an adventurous boy priding himself in the mischievous camaraderie of small town prairie life. Following high school, he went to work in Lloydminster where he met and married Jenny, his life companion of fifty one years.
In 1972, Ray and Jenny journeyed west to Lethbridge eventually settling in Taber in 1977. His entrepreneurial spirit flourished during these forty one years in the community with numerous and varied business involvements. Ray’s love of business and “wheeling and dealing” built partnerships and deep lasting relationships with many people in the community and beyond. He embraced each day at work as a gift and developed strong bonds with employees, customers and all who became a part of his unique projects or were engaged by his story telling.
By far, Ray’s deepest love was family and friends, always happiest when sharing home cooked food, laughter and his infectious spirit with all around him. As a proud Father and Poppa, he was always available to nurture, mentor and share his wisdom with his children and grandchildren. His deep faith and compassionate spirit welcomed many and motivated his commitment to serve the Church and community using his gifts and efforts for those in need.
Family and friends shared opportunities for Ray and Jenny to experience a variety of places at home and abroad. Ray was energized with travel always connecting to people and embracing diversity while appreciating the common ties of family, food and fun.
Ray’s life leaves a huge footprint of love and care that will be deeply missed. His lengthy battle with cancer reflected his great love for life and his courage to face hardships and suffering with dignity. With faith in God and acceptance of His plan, Ray passed peacefully, wanting to guide and support others while expressing gratitude for the goodness of his life until the end.

DAY CHIEF

WINSTON VICTOR DAY CHIEF “Ksistsikominaa” (Thunder Chief) patriarch of the All Black Faces clan, passed away peacefully surrounded by his cherished & loving wife Martha Day Chief and his children and grandchildren of the Blood Reserve, at the Chinook Regional Hospital, on Friday, September 28, 2018 at the age of 79 years.

Winston’s passing has left a huge void for not only his immediate family but also the Bloodtribe, as they lost one of its most respected traditional elders.

Foremost he was a husband, a father, a grandfather and great grandfather.

Winston was married to Martha his loving wife and partner and best friend for 57 years. Together they raised their family Winston Jr (Renee), Barney (Sandra), Dexter (Anna) Debbie (John Mac), Wendy, Warren and Ira. Their adopted children Horace (Dolly), Tracy (Beth) and Russell (Merldine) Oka. He cherished his 18 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Winston was born on the Blood Reserve to Victor and Lucy Day Chief. As the eldest child, he was nurtured by his grandmother (Minnie) and Iron. Raised in the traditional way, as a miineepooka. In his youth, he attended the St. Mary’s Indian Residential School. His real schooling was left to his father and uncles. They instilled in him a hard work ethic, humility and the ability to laugh at oneself. All of this can be seen in his own children today, whom he passed it on to.

Winston was blessed with two passions, his singing ability and horsemanship. He was one of the original members of Old Agency drum group. His singing voice was recognized throughout Alberta and western United States. He brought back many honours to the Blood Tribe. His ability with horse’s was unmatched, whether it was training for match racing, rope horses, wagon team horses, or just riding horse. His love for the horse and it’s welfare was always foremost to him.

Winston was involved in many organizations on the Blood Tribe. From fundraising for the construction of the Old Agency Hall to serving on the Blood Tribe Council. No task was to small or to big. If he gave you his word, it would be done. That was very important to him.

His lively passion was to support his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their sporting activities. They all made him very proud.

In 1971, he, along with mom would start a new chapter in their lives, as members of the newly formed Magpie Society. This group of 70 plus members would be entrusted with the most of sacred tasks. Carrying on Niitsipaitapiisinnii. The Horn society-Iitskiinaiks.

For 18 years, he was a active member, then another 17 years as an drummer and an elder. As a member of the society and elder, he often serenaded the whole Sundance camp for over 60 years.

His other passion was stickgaming. From attending local jackpots to huge tournaments. He won his share. You always knew he would be there as he was often asked to say the opening blessing at these events. The past few years, it wasn’t about winning anymore, it was to visit with his Handgame family and reacquaint with old friends.

From establishing a riding program for the youth with Ervin Shade and Charlie Fox-Aayaaksima. He performed naming ceremonies for grandchildren and headdress transfers for family members, with a highlight being the headdress transfer to Premier Ralph Klein. His immense knowledge of the Blackfoot culture, its language, the songs and its traditions will be missed by all. Some people leave us with short stories but he was a novel.

He was asked once, what is our culture

“You see me pray and smudge the sweetgrass every day those who ask and for those who don’t ask. You heard me sing in the sweats and in the ceremony. You heard me sing for those that want to dance. I’ve taught u my language I showed you how to laugh. I showed you how to be a family, how to love it and protect it. That is our way our culture and you won’t find it in any book”.

Winston is survived by his siblings: brothers Wilton (Trina), Chester (Bonnie), Bruce (Carla) and Perry (wife); sisters June, Rita (Keith), Harriet, Lavern (Rodney), Patsy and Delia (John); Winston’s extended families: Heavy Runner, Mountain Horse, Beebes, Heavy Head, Knifes, Hunts, First Chargers, Panther Bones, Little Bears, Wolf Childs, Gro von boys, Russels, Blackwaters, Goodriders, Small Eyes and Bullshields. From South Peigan: Butterfly’s, Running Cranes; from North Peigan: Yellow Horns and Pards and from Sisika: Turning Robes and his handgame family, too numerous to mention.

Predeceased by son Brent, his twin granddaughters Shaquille and Showan; brother Jarvie (Julianna); and sisters Elfreda, Rosialine, Doris and Judy K.

The family apologizes for those names they may have missed.

Linda Aspeslet

1946 – 2018

It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Linda Doreen Aspeslet at the age of 72 years. Linda was born on April 23, 1946 in Lethbridge, Alberta. She spent her early years on the family farm, attending a one-room schoolhouse before moving to the city. It was during her high school years at LCI when she met her sweetheart, Doug. After graduating from high school, Linda went to work for AGT. In 1965, she and Doug got married and Linda left her job to raise their four daughters. After all the girls had begun school, Linda returned to the workforce. For thirty-seven years she thoroughly enjoyed working with the dentists of Family Dental and later their sons at Southridge Dental. As a busy wife, mother of four rambunctious girls and an office manager, Linda still found time to be active in the community. She volunteered for various school activities, coached youth bowling and participated in fundraising events such as the Relay for Life for the Canadian Cancer Society. She and Doug were also active members of the Gyro Club where they developed many lasting friendships and created wonderful memories. Linda was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2015 but it would not deter her from doing the things she loved, one of which was traveling. From the time she had a young family, vacations had always been a big part of their lives and after retiring in 2016, she and Doug began to travel more. They spent even more time at daughter Launa’s cabin on Kootenay Lake, an area where they had vacationed since the girls were children and took trips abroad with friends and family alike. Linda’s motto was always, “Do what you can while you can.” Linda was also interested in expressing her creative side, whether it be through macramé, crochet, quilting, porcelain doll making, never-ending house redecorating projects – and of course her Christmas goodies, which she lovingly shared with anyone and everyone. Family and friends were of the utmost importance to Linda and she made sure to pass that on to her children and grandchildren. As a family, they would walk together in support of the Step N Stride for the Parkinson Association of Alberta. Friday and Saturday night family suppers were a mainstay at Doug and Linda’s house – a time to reconnect and talk of past and future adventures. She made sure each of her children and grandchildren felt special and loved, even keeping up with the latest technology so that she could follow her girls on Facebook or Facetime/iMessage/text with her grandchildren. Linda is survived by her husband of 53 years, Doug; daughters Launa Aspeslet, Tara Aspeslet, Nicole Simms (Billy), Dionne (Trevor) Kenney and the joy of her life; grandchildren Nicholas, Ethan, Ainsley, Carson, Alicia, Isabelle, Shayla and Emma. She is also remembered by her sister, Sheran Stuckey (George); brothers Jim (Melody) Ewing and Barry Ewing, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Tom and Dorothy Ewing and son-in-law Lorry Simms. A Celebration of Linda’s Life will be held at 1:00pm, on Saturday, October 27, 2018, at the LETHBRIDGE COUNTRY CLUB, 101 Country Club Road South, Lethbridge. For those who wish, memorial donations in Linda’s name may be made to a charity of your choosing.

CHRISTOPHER THOMAS CLIFTON passed away on Saturday September 29, 2018 in Calgary following a brief illness. Chris was born on February 3, 1957 in Magrath. He graduated from Magrath High School in 1975 and shortly after moved to Lethbridge, where he lived until his passing. Chris had always been active in sports, especially enjoying basketball and slow pitch. He worked as a correctional officer at the Lethbridge Correctional Centre from 1983 until his retirement in 2015.

On February 13, 1989, he married Carol Skretting in Honolulu, HI. They had two children, Brett (Kimberley) of Lethbridge and Kennedy (Michael Klein) of Sparwood, BC. Chris was a busy and caring father, always finding time to participate in his children’s educational, athletic, and personal endeavours. He was a particularly talented and enthusiastic military and genealogical researcher and had recently collaborated with an Ottawa-based historian and filmmaker, as well as a France-based historian and author.

Retirement gave Chris the time to travel and he had the opportunity to make several trips, visiting historical sites in France, the UK, Belgium, Italy, and the Netherlands. Chris often stated that no matter where he went in the world, he always seemed to find someone he knew from Southern Alberta.

FOX, Marvin Maurice (Omahksipiitaa- Big Eagle) November 5, 1935 – October 2, 2018

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of the great knowledge keepers of the Blood Reserve, Marvin Fox (Omahksipiitaa). He was a celebrated elder and educator, an author, storyteller, Blackfoot language keeper and translator, who devoted his life to the Creator, family and community. Marvin was born and raised in Kainaiwa to George & Margaret (Many Fingers) Fox. Born into both the Many Children (Aakaipokaiksi) and Fish Eaters (Mamiaoyiiksi) clans, Marvin was immersed, at an early age, into the rich language and traditions of the Siksikaisitapiiks (Blackfoot People). Marvin became a member of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate where he was bestowed his Blackfoot name “Omahksipiitaa” from his grandfather Stephen Fox Sr., when he became a member of the spiritual society of OMI in 1963 and the Saaamiksi Society. Marvin persevered in his educational pursuits and was a lifelong learner and worked hard to acquire the tools to preserve his western and traditional knowledge and to teach others. He received a B.A. and B.Ed. degree from the University of Ottawa; he also studied linguistics at the University of Alberta, community development at St. Francis Xavier (Coady International Institute) and Management at the University of Calgary. After graduating, Marvin returned and worked for his community and the Treaty 7 First Nations for the next 30 years. He worked in various positions throughout his career with focused dedication spent towards the preservation and resurgence of Blackfoot culture and language. He will be missed dearly by his loving wife of 50 years, Lily May (White Pup), sons – Andrew (Terry) and Rocky (Shirley), nine grandchildren; Mitchell, Staven, Courtney, Zachery, Donovan, Tico, Elijah, Kierra, Leighton, his siblings, Delphine (Woodrow) Good Striker, Norbert (Mary Louise), Tony, Leo (Dave), Bernard (Barbara), Chief Roy (Genevieve), Arnold, Jenny and Jacinta, his adopted sister Dr. Deborah Pace, his adopted sons Mitchell and Steve Buffalo, and his many nieces and nephews. He led a busy life but always found time to participate in his children’s educational pursuits, athletics and personal endeavors. His family was often found playing golf and attending hockey games, amongst other sporting activities. Marvin’s children and grandchildren exemplify his teachings and his legacy will live on through them. Marvin was kind, gentle and patient and lived life to the fullest. He possessed a pure, kind and radiant heart. His enduring lesson to all of us was to recognize and appreciate the Blackfoot language and traditional values. He inspired a vision to those closest to him to persevere in life and to develop our gifts that were given to us by Creator despite the hardships and many obstacles of life. HARTLEY

LORRAINE HARTLEY, precious mother, grandmother, and great grandmother graduated from this life on October 7, 2018, and has been reunited with her loving husband, Lowell Hartley, as well as her mother, father, and many other family members.

Lorraine was born December 12, 1932 in Kamloops, B.C. She left us peacefully early Sunday morning, October 7, in Cardston, Alberta after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was surrounded by her five daughters and lifted by the spirit and prayers of her three sons.

Lorraine was very active in the community and in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving faithfully in many callings. She had the voice of an angel, often singing at weddings, church functions, and yes… at many funerals.

She loved her children and grandchildren and passed on her love of culture, travel, music, and learning to them. Family was everything to her. She was a wonderful, devoted mother to her 8 children, 38 grandchildren, and 35 great grandchildren.

Lorraine Terry met Lowell Hartley in Hartleyville in 1951 when she came down from Edmonton to live with her Grandma and Grandpa Fisher in Hill Spring while teaching in the old Hartleyville school. It was love at first sight and they were married in 1952 in the Salt Lake City Temple. It was the beginning of a great love story. Lorraine supported and loved her husband through the adventure of many moves and job changes. Though he passed away in 1988 she continued to lead a productive and joyful life including a mission to Arizona.

Lorraine struggled in her waning years to be able to express herself with Alzheimer’s blocking her ability to communicate with words. In spite of these limitations, she never lost her ability to communicate clearly through her loving spirit, smile, and demeanor. She touched the lives of many and she will be missed dearly.

Patrick Adams 1966 – 2018

Patrick (Pat) Jay Adams, loving husband to Susie, father to Olivia and Jack, and loyal friend to many, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 3 at the age of 52 years after a courageous fight against a rare form of cancer. Susie was there to hold his hand and comfort him as he said farewell. He passed nine days before their 20th wedding anniversary.

Pat was born on August 17, 1966 in Olean, New York, the fourth child of Art and Anne Adams. When he was nine years old, the family moved to Canada and settled in Lethbridge. Pat grew up in a loving household that encouraged hard work, commitment, loyalty, and a desire to contribute to the community. He shared a passion for sports with his two brothers, Dave and Shawn, and he played hockey and football throughout elementary and junior high school. In high school, Pat pursued his true passion, basketball, and he followed his older brothers’ footsteps as a proud member of the LCI Rams varsity basketball team. Pat, who went by the family nickname Bubs, loved his time in high school and the lifelong friends he made. In grade 12, he was elected class President and served his school with pride. After high school, Pat’s basketball skills led him to Lethbridge College where he was a member of the Kodiaks Men’s basketball team for two seasons. Soon after graduating from the Communication Arts program in 1988, Pat returned to the United States. He worked at Microsoft in Seattle as a technical writer and at the same time gained more education at the University of Washington. He eventually completed an MBA and several writing designations. Pat’s career as a technical writer led him to Silicon Valley and eventually to Napa Valley in California. During this period, he combined his love of travel and scuba diving, and he went on many diving adventures to exotic locations around the world. Pat and Susie were married in Napa Valley in 1998. They became parents in 2001 when Olivia was born; in 2004, Jack followed, and this happy event coincided with the family relocating to Hayden, Idaho to be closer to Pat’s parents. The family quickly settled into the rhythm of a close-knit community and developed many lifelong friendships. Pat and his dad, known to many as Chief, volunteered in the community and managed several successful business ventures. Together, father and son built the family cabin in northern Idaho, known as Valhalla. Pat’s athletic pursuits shifted to mountain biking and eventually to triathlons. He completed local Ironman events, often competing alongside his brother Dave and niece Brittney. Nothing made Pat happier than being a husband and father. He loved Susie, Olivia, and Jack with all his heart, and he was so proud watching his kids excel in school and in life. In accordance with family tradition, in lieu of a funeral service a celebration of life will take place on Pat’s favourite holiday, July 4, in 2019 at a venue in Coeur d’Alene. A celebration will also be held in Lethbridge. Details for both events will follow in the coming months. Pat is survived by Susie, Olivia, Jack; sister Adena Ray, brothers Dave (Pam) and Shawn (Barb), several nieces and nephews, and countless friends. Pat’s favourite film was It’s a Wonderful Life, the story of a man who loved his family and invested deeply in building a community. Like George Bailey, Pat was grateful for all the blessings he received in his full and happy life. He did his best to lasso the moon for his beloved Susie, and now he looks on from above, waiting to earn his wings. He will be loved and missed forever.

GIBBONS

ANNE GIBBONS, beloved wife of the late Earl Gibbons, passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital, on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at the age of 84 years. This marks the end of the life of a gracious, gregarious and drop dead gorgeous gal.

Anne Rita Gibbons was the only daughter and first Canadian child born April 20, 1934 to Peter and Katia Boras of Vitina, Herzegovina. Her brothers Ivan (Doris), Walter (Ancica) and Michael (Helen) had travelled with their mother from Europe the year before to a prairie homestead where Peter had worked for five years to bring his family a more hopeful future.

Anne’s early life in a prairie farming community shaped her, as she in turn shaped her community her entire life.

From necessity in the dust bowl, depression, and war years of her childhood, she lived and understood the importance of family, of community, of hard work, of optimism and when one couldn’t find it in themselves to be optimistic, of faith. Anne learned to be creative – flour bags became fashion in her hands; even luncheon meat became a gourmet meal to feed her family and anyone else who walked through the door.

When she was the subject of rejection as the ‘other’, the immigrant kid, her competitiveness, her smarts, her perfectionism, and her irrepressible spirit became strengths that endured throughout her life.

Earl Gibbons was strategic in his bid on that most desirable shoebox at the Iron Springs dance hall’s midnight lunchbox raffle. Anne and Earl danced through 53 years of marriage. Earl thought he was the luckiest man alive… and the best fed.

Together they endured the fear and uncertainty of entrusting the life of their son to open heart surgery in its early days; the alternative was certain death from a congenital heart defect. They were supported by their community and their church at a time before Medicare had been introduced by the CCF. It was a lifelong political puzzle that Anne voted Liberal in every election but the last.

Anne was incredibly proud of her children Greg (Daniele), systems analyst, Jeannette (Dave) family practitioner, Donna (Kevin) midwife and nurse practitioner, and Lawrence (Ritchie) high energy physicist, and their children and grandchildren. She was a role model for her daughters in particular, working throughout her marriage at a time when women were supposed to be happy enough at home.

The Butte Dress Shoppe was her fifth baby, and one in which all her energy, skill and talent came together. She had an eye for beauty and fashion where no one had ever thought to look before, and Picture Butte became the place for graduation and wedding gowns, or the perfect pair of jeans, for all of southern Alberta.

After the Dress Shoppe closed and even more after the death of her beloved Earl in 2006, Anne channeled her energy into her community, organizing projects to reveal and share the beauty of her prairie home. The Walk on the Wild Side is now an unexpected refuge for swans, pelicans and early morning walkers.

In her last years, Anne opened her heart and home to others. She destroyed the tradition of hoarding secret family recipes, sharing her skills at kifle baking, even when that threatened its value as a bartering tool and currency in Picture Butte.

Anne was always ready to celebrate life with thoughtfulness and generosity. The first thing she mumbled after the stroke that eventually led to her death was instructions to mail the fire truck to her great-grandson in time for his second birthday. The second was a set of instructions on how to bake the pies in her freezer for a friend in need.

Her last act was pure rascality, making a snowball for another hospital inmate to throw strategically. Good gracious, Mom. We will miss you.

A Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at ST. CATHERINE’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 762 Crescent Avenue, Picture Butte, AB on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Ian Gagne, Celebrant. Interment will follow the reception at Mountain View Cemetery.

However, Violet’s greatest trips were to Hungry to investigate her heritage as well as search for and get to know the family she found there.

Violet considered her greatest love to be her family, whom she treasured and adored. Her kindness, caring and support are a gift her family will carry forever.

We would like to thank the staff of St. Michael’s Health Centre, Edith Cavell Care Centre, Chinook Regional Hospital, Milk River Health Centre and the many family and friends who have provided their love and support.

ROBB

Aug 25 , 1956 – October 11, 2018

PATRICIA “PAT” ROBB (nee MARSHALL), passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at home.

During her lifetime she explored a wide variety of interests and activities. She attended LCI for Grade 10 and 12. Her Grade 11 year was spent in Switzerland. It was a magical year for her and she talked often about her experiences with her host family, learning to enjoy new foods, and of course, travel.

In her younger days, she was an avid tennis player, and travelled around Southern Alberta and BC participating in tournaments. During this time she attended the University of Alberta and Lethbridge College and became a Registered Nurse. For a short period of time she worked as an RN in Taber. Unfortunately the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis started to appear and cut short her nursing career.

Pat met Don on the weekend Mount St. Helen’s blew up (that is a whole other story) and the two were married in December of 1980. At this time, Pat decided to learn to play the flute. She studied and practiced diligently and very quickly became very good at it. Soon she joined the University of Lethbridge Wind Ensemble, and was asked to join the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra. In addition to these groups she was invited to play in the orchestras for several musical theatre productions (These were especially enjoyable for her). Throughout this time, she taught flute lessons and developed an excellent roster of students. She compiled a lot of her ideas and information about flute into a book of which she was very proud.

Pat had several excellent students which led her to form the Southwinds Flute Ensemble. This wonderful group did many superb performances.

In 1987, the Lethbridge Community Band was formed. She joined the fledgling band along with her father Maurie. Being able to play in the band with her dad gave her enormous joy. Pat continued to play with the LCB, and enjoyed being at rehearsal in the evening just before she passed away.

Throughout her adult life, Pat suffered with MS. Her primary symptom was trigeminal neuralgia – an excruciating pain that was extremely difficult to control. Throughout the 1980’s various surgical treatments were undertaken to control this pain. Some measure of control came from various medicines which she had to take continually. While medications did give her relief, they often sapped her energy.

Pat loved animals – especially cats. Anyone entering our home is immediately taken by the huge quantity and variety of cat knick-knacks, and cat related paraphernalia. Over the years, Pat owned and loved several cats. They were her babies.

When she was not spoiling our cats, she was very dedicated in helping care for both her father and mother in the later years of their lives. Many hours were devoted to making sure that they had everything they needed.

Traveling was not something that suited Pat. She did, however, love going to her favourite place in the world, Rosen Lake, BC. The Marshall family cabin held cherished memories for her. Each summer, time at the lake was the highest priority. It was her own slice of heaven. Plans to go there again next summer were already solidified and she could hardly wait until that time would come.

A Celebration of Pat’s Life will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME – 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB. on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Canon James Robinson officiating.

A Private Family Interment will be held at Mountain View Cemetery prior to the celebration of life.

In memory of Pat, please consider a donation to the Humane Society, or another animal care organization. She always felt we could learn much from our furry friends.
