VOORT

ANTHONY “TONY” VOORT was peacefully reunited with his “sweetie”, the late Sharon Ann Voort (nee Stotyn), on April 13, 2016, surrounded by the love of his three children: Nancy Metz (nee Voort), Kathy Voort (Keith) and David Voort.

Besides his three children, Tony is lovingly remembered by his three grandchildren: Tannon Calderwood, Sera Voort-Weisgerber and Skyla Metz, who he loved to spend time with, finding interest in what they each enjoyed, be it the love of dance, science, camping, or just spending time telling his stories. He will be greatly missed by his brothers Bill (Brenda)Voort, Joe (Heather) Voort, John (Mary Lee) Voort and his sister Hennie Vander Linden; dearly missed by his mother-in-law Lena Stotyn, several sisters and brothers-in-law, numerous family members including many nieces and nephews, his small group of the greatest friends a man could ask for as well as his friends at work that he considered family.

Tony was well known and respected in the Lethbridge community and worked as a Superintendent for Ward Bros. Construction; a company that he spoke of with highest regard, right up to the day he was admitted to the Chinook Regional Hospital.

His carpentry skills and talents will be forever encased in numerous builds and projects all over the city including assisting in the most recent project, the restoration of the Japanese gardens. There, and in his home as well as the homes of his children, family members and friends, will be where you will see how exceptionally talented his wood-working skills were.

An avid camper and well-travelled, he enjoyed the outdoors the most, especially with his family. He took pleasure in the restoration of old cars and tinkering with ideas of creations in his shop; a past time he shared with his son. He was always available to assist with any requests from family and friends; from creating bird houses and feeders to building cabinets, dressers and more. As well, he was a big part of his church family and helped out when he could in any way.

He was a great man who worked hard all his life and for everyone he loved. He will be missed, with words we cannot express, by all who had met him though briefly or for a lifetime.

Mrs. Inez Kelly

1938 – 2016

It is with great sadness and warm memories that the family of Inez Kelly announces her passing on April 18, 2016, at the age of 77.

Inez is predeceased by her beloved husband Bill Kelly, her parents Joseph and Opal (Masterton) McCormack, her brothers Hugh, Robert (Bobby), James (Jimmy) and infant brother Charlie as well as her sisters Margaret and Isabel.

Inez was born in Loggieville, New Brunswick. She attended Loggieville School, Hotel Dieu Hospital Nursing Program and St. Thomas University. Our father, the late Bill Kelly, followed his sweetheart to Lethbridge and later they both went back to Loggieville, New Brunswick to get married in August of 1962. Like Bill, Inez was a very outgoing and social person. She enjoyed golf, bridge, book club, going to the gym, shopping, reading and going to dances and parties.

Inez was an excellent student and earned top marks in primary and nursing school. Inez also achieved excellent grades in university and was named to the Dean’s list while at St. Thomas. She was offered numerous positions following graduation from University. Her adventurous spirit took her to Lethbridge, Alberta to teach at the nursing school at St. Michael’s Hospital. This was the start of a remarkable career in healthcare that started with teaching and spanned into nursing and hospital administration. Inez also devoted years of volunteer service as a school board trustee and chairperson, as a member of the University of Lethbridge Senate and as a Board member for the Chinook Health Region. Inez’s career and volunteer accomplishments were recognized in 1988 when she received Lethbridge’s Women of Distinction Award, Women in Business – a very proud moment for our family.

Inez deeply loved her parents, brothers, sisters and children. She cherished the time spent with her grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered.

Our family would like to thank everyone who was part of Inez’s life. In particular we would like to thank family and friends for their love, support and kindness. It is with great sadness that the family of Joyce “Joy” Kirkham announces her passing on April 9, 2016 at St. Michael’s palliative care unit at the age of 76. She will be sadly missed by her son Darcy (Susy) Marsden of Taber, daughter Wendy (Mike) Lyons of Holly Springs, NC, stepchildren Debbie Kirkham, Garry (Debbie) Kirkham, LeeAnn (Wes) Wright and grandchildren Trevor, Bradley, Shannon, Matthew, Nathan, Emma, Logan and Tessa; two brothers William Golia and Michael (Beth) Golia of Lethbridge; very special Aunt Helen Coyle, many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Joyce was born in Lethbridge to the late Anne and Michael Golia. She won the first Ms. Wilson title at Wilson Junior High in 1954 and played basketball with the 1956 provincial Champion LCI Clipper Queens. Joyce was an accomplished bowler who won many awards and continued to enjoy playing in a weekly league until last year. This past August she was able to bowl and WIN one more time while playing with the grandkids. Joyce dearly loved her family and this extended to the family of her first husband Robert (Bob) Marsden (deceased). After being single for a while, she met Gary Kirkham and they were married New Year’s Eve, 1978 in Las Vegas. She continued her love of his family too after he died in 1988 and she was so grateful for the relationship she had with them. Joyce then went to work for SMRID where she stayed until retiring. Joyce was a wonderful cook who hosted most big family dinners which were always followed by several games of cards. She loved visits with her grandchildren, gardening, watching the Flames and Stampeders and having lunch at the casino while playing just $20. Joyce always had a circle of friends that created fun memories and also supported her and the family at the end of her life. She will always be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother and we smile knowing she is once again with her dearly loved mom Anne. “I Love you”. Isabel Jane Thomas (Nee Clarke)

1923 – 2016

Isabel Jane Thomas, beloved wife of the late W.N. (Fred) Thomas, passed away at St. Michael’s Palliative Care Unit, on April 24, 2016.

She is survived by her children Gordon (Myra Bielby) of Edmonton and Jane (George Konrad) of Lethbridge, step-grandchildren Sandra and Jennifer Woo, and many nieces and nephews.

Isabel was born in Medicine Hat on May 29, 1923 and was raised in Travers, Alberta, where she lived with her family above the Travers General Store. An Alberta pioneer, she grew up in the days before indoor plumbing and electrification. Upon graduation, she attended Garbutt Business College in Lethbridge and began a career as a bank teller in Claresholm in 1941, transferring to Champion and later to Lethbridge, where she met her future husband. Fred and Isabel were married in 1953. On Gordon’s arrival, Isabel left her career to work at home, and Jane arrived soon after. Isabel was an intelligent woman who loved sports and her little dog, Zoe, and took great pride in her home, in which she lived for almost 63 years until eight weeks before her death. A private woman, she enjoyed the companionship of many close and dear friends and family. She was a keen follower of community and political affairs and closely watched the news, always able to discuss the politics of the day. While she was good at accepting things she could not change, she was very open-minded, loved to laugh, had a great sense of humour and could gently identify the flaws in another person’s argument. She embraced her iPad, allowing her to communicate with friends and family beyond her usual letters, with emoticons and her own LOL abbreviations.

The family wishes to thank the doctors and healthcare providers at St. Michael’s for their care and support of Isabel and our family.

Hart, Raymond Henry

January 18, 1922 – April 29, 2016

A mighty Diamond Willow has fallen on the bank of the Willow Creek. Son of William Orrin and Emma May (Davison) Hart. Born on a blizzardy day January 18, 1922, up Meadow Creek way. In a few years the Hart family moved down to the flats near Willow Creek. Raymond attended school at Trout Creek, the only boy in his grade with five girls. Ray and his only sibling, Orrin, were greatly impacted by the Depression as children and, to add to the hardship, their family home burned down one chinook day in November, 1932. Dad left school after grade 8, as was common in those hard times, to help out on the farm. Soon along came the war and with its opportunity for the Harts. W.O. and Raymond found extra employment helping to build the new airport for the war effort. Dad was one of the lucky few who not only helped construct S.F.T.S. #15 Claresholm; but, after joining the RCAF as an aero engine mechanic, L.A.C. Hart was posted back to Claresholm. Just a short ride on his Indian 74 motorcycle and sidecar brought him home on leave; helping out on the farm, and fishing and hunting in the hills.

Dad met and married Marion Mikel from a farm near Frankford, Ontario in 1950 after introduction through a mutual Air Force friend, Ray Jensen. Ray and Marion came west and settled on the banks of Willow Creek. Married for 66 years, they raised four children: Ruth Hart Budd (Robert), Lethbridge; Elizabeth Davidson (Roy), Magrath; Mikel Hart (Donna), Claresholm; and David (Emily), Calgary.

Raymond is survived by eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren; his loving wife, Marion; two sisters-in-law: Margaret Hart (Claresholm), and Verna Kirkwold (Airdrie), and numerous nephews and nieces.

Predeceased by two grandchildren, a son-in-law, Jack Brosz; his brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Lorna Jensen, hunting partner and brother-in-law Norman Kirkwold; and most, if not all, his RCAF friends in Flight 21.

Dad loved Willow Creek; he built up what was arguably the most beautiful farm ever. As a young man during the Depression years he and Orrin trapped and hunted along the creek; they skated on it; swam in it; forded it with cattle and horses, cut burdocks along it; Ray flew to its source, fished from its banks, and irrigated from it. And a few times Dad found his family and farm floating in the middle of it.

No one worked harder to provide for his family than Raymond.

Raymond served as president and secretary of the Rural Electrification Association for a few decades and Dad was the newcomers’ first contact person in the area. They would come to know him as they signed up for power. Thanks to Raymond our area had electricity many years earlier than other farming areas in Alberta. Dad also owned the first Aberdeen Angus cattle herd in the area, even slightly before his more famous cattleman brother, Orrin. Raymond was active in the United Church–on its board and as a trustee. He was one of those dyed-in-the-wool farm cooperative believers who would “drag his ass across a field of broken glass to buy a can of beans at the Co-Op.” He was the longest standing UFA delegate in the province when he stepped down.

Because of his missionary cousin, Ann Davison Storey, Marion and Ray sponsored and supported our Korean wing of the family, the Kims, to Canada where they thrive today, a success story.

Many thanks to his attentive nursing staff at the Willow Creek Continuing Care Centre in Claresholm.

Pre-funeral interment to take place Thursday May 5th at 11:00 A.M., Claresholm Cemetery.

Funeral to take place at the Claresholm United Church Thursday May 5, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. officiated by Reverend Linda Ervin and Reverend Stephan Ulrich.

Donations, in lieu of flowers, in Raymond’s memory can be made to the charity of your choice.

Arrangements entrusted to Willow Creek Funeral Home, Claresholm. Tel: 403-625-3212. Condolences may be forwarded at http://www.willowcreekfuneralhome.com

KRISTJANSON

With absolute heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our mother, SHARON ELAINE KRISTJANSON, of Lethbridge, Alberta, on Wednesday, April 27th, 2016, at the young age of 54 years.

Sharon is faithfully remembered by her children; Mallory, Kellon, and Brianna of Lethbridge, and her beloved grandson, Lucas Jordan. Sharon is also survived by her father, John Bodnaruk, brothers, Brian (Beatrice) and David Bodnaruk, as well as many special nieces and nephews. Sharon was predeceased by her mother, Marjorie, grandparents Svea and Lawrence Thompson, and Nick and Jennie Bodnaruk.

Our mother spent countless days throughout her life cheering on her children as their number one fan; eagerly encouraging them to strive for the best, and to passionately love each day. Without question, mom made many sacrifices to make sure her children, and grandson were taken care of.

For those who had the honour of knowing our Mother, her generosity, loyalty, perseverance, and selflessness, are but a few of her captured traits. Her friends would contend, their lives were made whole with her friendship.

It is with devastating sadness we had to say goodbye so soon. The last days embraced will be enchanting memories until we meet again. Despite how quick we lost you, you left peacefully, to meet your mother in Heaven. Mom will be sadly missed by all who knew her, and always remain our hero.

To honour Sharon’s wishes, a private family interment will take place. A Celebration of Life service, open to friends and co-workers, will be announced in due course. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Canadian Diabetes Association, #204, 2323 – 32 Avenue N.E., Calgary, AB, T2E 6Z3.

TOMPKINS

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our brother and son, GREG TOMPKINS, who passed away peacefully with his family by his side.

Greg started his career at the U of L as a research assistant in Physics in 1984. In 1986, he was hired as a technician for the Department of Physics and Astronomy and promoted to technical specialist in 1996. Working with Dr. David Naylor and the Astronomical Instrumentation Group (AIG), Greg provided technical support for electronic instrument control and data acquisition. One of the highlights of Greg’s career was his design for a spectrometer circuit used on NASA’s infrared telescope in Hawaii. In 1999, he was involved in developing a novel type of spectrometer for use at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, also located in Hawaii. By 2003, this design was adopted by the European Space Agency for use in the Herschel Space Observatory mission. Greg was then involved in designing and building a spectrometer to validate the performance of the one to be flown on Herschel. After years of work and extensive consultation with scientists and engineers, Greg came up with a simple and elegant design. After the launch of the Herschel in 2009, his electronics were on standby in case they were needed to solve a problem that had occurred in space. It remained active until 2013. The spectrometer was to be returned to Canada once it was decommissioned but several groups wanted it to remain in Europe. It now has a home in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at University College London. Greg also worked on designing and developing a control and data acquisition system for a spectrometer used for cancer detection. Where previously it took 3000 seconds to scan a 1×1 cm cancer biopsy sample, Greg reduced this time to an impressive 19.2 seconds.

In his three-decades-long career, Greg mentored and trained more than 300 students. His name is mentioned in every master’s and doctoral thesis produced by students in the AIG and he is the co-author of numerous publications and international conference presentations. “Greg will be deeply missed, not only for his electronic wizardry, but for his wit and irreverent spirit. His constant questioning of our scientific belief system made us all better scientists,” says Naylor.

Greg was a kind man who cared about people. He had a great sense of humour and enjoyed making others laugh. He was very good at sports and played soccer and squash for many years. He also enjoyed travelling. He is survived by his mother Catherine, his siblings Mallory (Renee) Tompkins, Patricia (Tom) Toney, Mark Tompkins, Michele (Tom) Mihalik, Annette (Jaye) Asplund, and Lisa Tompkins and six nieces and nephews: Perry and Kimberly Tompkins, Justin, Lana, and Natasha Toney, and Sarah Tompkins.

A Prayer Service will be held at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2405 – 12 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, on Friday, May 6, 2016 at 7:00 P.M.

The Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, Lethbridge, AB, on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. with a luncheon at the Parish hall afterwards. A private interment will be held for immediate family.

MURRAY GODFREY

HEAVY SHIELDS

1961 – 2016

With great sadness we announce the passing of Murray Godfrey Heavy Shields on April 26, 2016 in Calgary, Alberta. Murray was born on August 23, 1961 in Bassano, Alberta to Ed and Marion Heavy Shields. He is survived by his children: Joni (Shane), Marty (Tish), Fawn (Chad) and Sable; his grandchildren: Halle Lucille, Briere Dayne, Christian Kennedy, Nixon Teddy and Dallas Steven; his father Ed Heavy Shields; brothers: Les (Emily), Rudy, Kenny and Paul; sisters: Darlene (Jim) and Twylla (Lance).

He was predeceased by his mother Marion Heavy Shields; sister Gina Heavy Shields/Weasel Head; grandparents Frank & Beatrice Good Striker and Eddie & Adelaide Heavy Shields.

Murray’s love for his family was very strong and showed in the relationships he had with his loved ones – including his brothers, sisters and cousins. He especially had a big heart for his children and grandchildren.

Murray graduated from Cardston High School in 1979. Throughout his life, he attended numerous educational facilities including SAIT, Mount Royal College, University of Lethbridge and Police College in Edmonton, Alberta. Although his studies brought him various types of jobs, his main goal and passion was in obtaining his 3rd level Power Engineering Certificate. Murray was residing in Calgary at the time of his passing. After spending most of his life on the Blood Reserve, Murray decided to relocate to the city, where there were more opportunities, resources and support.

Murray had a deep passion for sports – mainly hockey and rodeo. He played minor hockey on the Blood Reserve and in his later years, played with the Kainai Chiefs, Mount Royal Cougars, and with the Lethbridge Native Sons. He also helped coach and train the Kainai Golden Chiefs’ Hockey Club. Murray’s passion for rodeo took him many places, travelling throughout Alberta and the United States.

Murray was known for his proud and reserved nature. He was a hard worker and always gave 100% in everything he put his mind to. He valued friendship and had many friends from all walks of life. DOUCETTE

June 17, 1921 – May 1, 2016

It is with great sadness and quiet relief that we announce the peaceful passing of EARL MILTON DOUCETTE on May 1, 2016. Earl was born June 17, 1921 in New Aberdeen Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Earl has joined his dear wife Sal, mother Ada, father William Charles, as well as his 10 brothers and sisters.

After a short stint of working in the coalmine, Earl joined the army and was a part of the 13th Field Company Royal Canadian Engineers. He fell madly in love with Italy, Holland, and all of their people. During an end of the war celebration, Earl was discovered as a singer and soon labeled as a “dramatic tenor”. Upon returning home, he attended the school of Julliard, New York where he studied music.

In 1947 Earl and his beautiful Sara (Sal) Walsh had a secret wedding. At this time, female teachers were not allowed to be married and remain teaching. A small ceremony comprised of their priest (who frowned upon that ridiculous rule), his cousin, and his niece, saw Earl and Sal blissfully married.

Earl performed in the Nova Scotia Opera Company, where he sang in operas such as Madam Butterfly, Marriage of Figaro, Lohengrin, and Countess Marissa.

In 1952 they had their first son Paul. A year later they were offered teaching jobs and the family moved to the Blood Reserve, Alberta where they lived for 12 years. Earl and Sara wrote operettas and set up concerts for their students to perform. In 1959 they had their second son John.

In 1966 the family moved to Lethbridge.

Earl is survived by his sons Paul (Jackie)Ladysmith, BC, John (Irene) and his dear granddaughters Angelica (Lyndsay) and Brooklyn, Lethbridge AB who spent countless hours visiting and listening to their grandpa’s stories. But every visit began with “That John – your Dad he can solve any problem, I don’t know what I would do without him”.

No matter where Earl went or who he talked to, he always had a joke or a song. The impression he left on so many different people around the world will live on through his cassette tape programs, cartoons, and stories.

At Earl’s request a private family service will be held at a later date.

KOSOLOFSKI

ANNE C. KOSOLOFSKI, beloved wife of the late Michael Kosolofski, passed away surrounded by the love of her family at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge on Wednesday, April 27th, 2016 at the age of 89 years.

Anne will be lovingly remembered by her three children and their families; Stan (Marcia) Kosolofski and their children: Kyle (wife Becky and their children, Cassie and Caymbree), Taren (husband Simon Roger and their children, Kya and Jack) and Brooke Kosolofski; Kathy Forster and her children: Kristen (husband Nathan Whitling and their children, Josh, Cassie, Lauren and Ethan), Nathan (Asteid Forster and their children, Nneka, Nya and Amari); Annette (John) Jangula and their children, Morgan (Nicole) and Spencer (Kristen Crowe).

She is also remembered by her siblings: Lillian Schmidt, Ron (Suzanne) Schmidt, Wayne (Noreen) Schmidt and her sister-in-law Eldene Schmidt.

Along with her husband Mike, Anne was predeceased by her parents, Wendelin and Katherine (nee Tumbach) Schmidt, her brothers Dick and Fred Schmidt and her sisters, Margaret Dafoe and Rosal Sykes.

Mom was born in Prelate, Saskatchewan on January 7, 1927. She was the second oldest in a family of eight children. Mom loved all things domestic: baking, gardening, fancywork, embroidery (especially her tea towels, which are a cherished item among the girls), knitting, quilt making and cross stitch, to name a few!) She made many of these treasures for her family and was always willing to share them with others.

Mom and dad were married June 13, 1945. She clearly remembered that the day of their wedding was a Wednesday because the store that she worked in with her brother Fred was closed that day! She worked incredibly hard during this time of her life as she had two young children and also helped her mom care for her two younger brothers. Mom was very active in her community and her church. She was a lifetime member of the CWL. Faith and prayer were very important to mom; she never missed attending mass, praying a daily rosary and saying her daily prayers.

Mom moved to Lethbridge in the spring of 2008. This was a difficult move for her as she had to leave behind her house, yard and well-fed stray cats. As the years went by, her health began to deteriorate and in 2015, she moved to Legacy Lodge where she was able to receive more specialized care. Mom often spoke of “going home” and we thought she was talking literally but now realize she wanted to leave her earthly home to be reunited with Dad and the other important people in her life who predeceased her.

The Funeral Mass for mom will take place at ST. PATRICK’S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 238 – 2nd Avenue N.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, on Friday, May 6th, 2016 at 11:00 A.M.

Willie “Willie” Golia

1936 – 2016

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Willie Golia of Lethbridge, on Monday, April 25, 2016, at the age of 79 years.

Willie was born November 15, 1936 in Lethbridge, AB. Right out of high-school, he worked for Remington Rand, fixing typewriters. He travelled the Monarch, Barons to Vulcan route. He then worked as a milkman for Purity Dairy. Eventually, Willie started with the City of Lethbridge, painting lines on the streets; we always pointed out the crooked ones. He moved on to being the city messenger and finally retired in 1998.

Willie was an avid sports nut. He played baseball and hockey in the late 1950’s and early 60’s for the York Hotel. During that time, he was named Top Goaltender in the city commercial hockey league. He then played for the Lethbridge Longhorns Oldtimers.

Willie was a board member for the Miners Library for many years and was sports coordinator. He organized crib and darts and bowled with his sister Joyce in a weekly bowling league and also participated in the Sutter Golf Classic tournaments from 1985-1993.

Willie will be greatly missed by his daughter Bev (Wes) Miller of Mossleigh, AB; his dog Sandy; brother Michael (Beth) Golia of Lethbridge; brother-in-laws Ken (Doreen) Heaton of Lethbridge and Gord (Esther) Heaton of Seba Beach, AB; sister-in-law Joy Pinney of Penticton, BC; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Willie is predeceased by his loving wife Margaret Rose; sister Joyce Kirkham; brother Ken Golia; parents Mike and Anne Golia; in-laws Clifford and Rose Heaton; and nephew Tom Heaton.

A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish, memorial donations may be made to Heaven Can Wait Animal Rescue Foundation, Box 6131, High River, AB T1V 1P7, who have taken such wonderful care of Sandy during this difficult time.
