VORNBROCK

JOYCE EVELYN VORNBROCK, beloved wife of Norman Vornbrock, of Milk River, passed away at the Milk River Health Centre on Monday, November 13, 2017 at the age of 80 years.

She is the loving mother of Linda Murray of Red Deer, Wendy (Lorne) Stayko of Edmonton and Karen (Ross) McPhillips of Bow Island as well as 14 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Allyson Vornbrock.

Joyce was predeceased by her son Ron Vornbrock, parents Robert and Ada Leslie and seven of her siblings.

Joyce was born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan on August 11, 1937, the youngest of nine children. The first nine years of her life were spent at that homestead with many animals and a few imaginary friends to keep her company.

Joyce and her family moved to Milk River in 1946. A few years later, in 1950, they moved to Vallican, British Columbia. These mountains are where many of her best childhood memories came from. The following year her family returned to Milk River.

Joyce graduated in 1957 from Erle Rivers High School. She met Norman in 1957; they started their 59 years of marriage on April 17, 1958. Their blessings started with four children, whom she loved dearly. Those children brought many other blessings of life to the family, and with each grandchild her love of being a grandma multiplied.

Joyce worked at many different places in Milk River, including Macleods, Prairie Rose Lodge, and the Thrift Store. Of course, she had a special love for her time at the library. Her love of books fills the shelves of her home, and filled her imagination throughout her life.

She was always there for her family; whether it was a concert, a game, or a special gift she found on sale, she was always thinking of others. Joyce welcomed new people into her life with open arms and a big hug. Those hugs will be dearly missed, along with her smile, and sharp wit.

A Memorial Service will be held at the MILK RIVER CIVIC CENTRE, 313 – 3 Avenue N.E., Milk River, AB, on Monday, November 20, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Marion Martin officiating.

In memory of Joyce, donations may be made to the Prairie Rose Lodge, 117 – 3 Avenue N.W., Milk River, AB, T0K 1M0 or to the Milk River Health Centre, 517 – Centre Avenue N.E., Milk River, AB, T0K 1M0.

AILSBY

GERALD THOMAS AILSBY was born on September 27th, 1946 in Swift Current, Saskatchewan to Tom and Lois Ailsby. He passed away at his home in Lethbridge on November 16th, 2017. Gerald’s education began in a one room rural school and was completed with a BA in psychology from Sir George Williams University in Montreal in 1967. That same year, he married his high school sweetheart, Joan Morstad, and together they made friends everywhere they lived – Regina, Calgary, Manitoba, Bow Island, and Lethbridge. Gerry’s people skills led him to become successful in his careers, as a social worker, addictions counsellor, and business man selling farm equipment, vehicles and heavy trucks. When people observed how varied his career choices were, Gerry responded by explaining they had a lot more in common than one would think – they all required a relationship of trust and a positive outlook for the future. Gerry is survived by his wife, Joan, his daughters, Kari Barter and Kristin Ailsby, his son-in-law, Kevin Barter and three grandchildren – Heather and Evan Barter and Georgia Wood. He is also survived by his mother, Lois Ailsby, and his brothers Howard (Shirley), Arnold (Brenda), and Garnet (Betty), mother-in-law, Val Morstad, brother-in-law Garth (Leah) Morstad, sisters-in-law Connie Rittinger, Anne (Rene) Deschamps, Avis (Darrell) Dahl, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Tom, his nephew Clinton Ailsby, his father-in-law, Al Morstad and his brother-in-law, Glen Rittinger. Gerry considered his church family at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and his business colleagues and customers as “chosen family” and he created and maintained a very close relationship with these groups. He regularly celebrated the exceptional support members in these groups extended to him, throughout his life, but especially in the few months before he passed. Gerry’s hobbies included fishing, flying airplanes, fishing, cars, and fishing. He also liked fishing. He had a charismatic spirit, an insatiable appreciation for good simple things like chocolate cake, Chinese food, and good boots, and an incredible attention to detail – with enthusiasm, he could describe the tire treads on his grandpa’s car 60 years ago! A celebration of Gerry’s life will be held at St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, 411 11th Street South, Lethbridge AB, on Friday, November 24th at 1:00 pm. Gerry’s family gratefully declines flowers and invites people to contribute to the YWCA Harbor House in Gerry’s memory.

VANDER BEEK

DR. JOHANNA “ANN” CORNELIA VANDER BEEK, beloved wife of Anton Vander Beek of Lethbridge, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Friday, November 17, 2017 at the age of 83 years.

Besides her husband Anton, she is lovingly remembered by her brother, Leen (Mies) Kayen, sister Corrie Hartenberg and brother Kees (Nel) Kayen, all of the Netherlands; sister-in-law, Frances Vander Beek and Nolda Smeding of Lethbridge, AB, Joan (John) Antonides of Penticton, BC and Nettie (Lloyd) Westra of Edmonton, AB.

Ann was predeceased by her parents, Gerrit and Johanna Kayen-VanHam, brother-in-law, Wim Hartenberg and Bert and Joe Vander Beek.

Ann initially worked in office administration for a time but found her true calling as a teacher at LCI. She was a keen student in her studies at the Universities of Lethbridge and Calgary then took a leave of absence to complete her Doctorate Degree in Linguistics at the University of Nancy, France; she received her Degree and an Honorable Mention from the Jury on October 23, 1980 – a major accomplishment! Ann started at LCI as a senior high school French teacher and eventually became the head of the Modern Languages Department. She was active in the Provincial Department of Education and the Language Council.

Ann was also a devoted member of Maranatha Christian Reformed Church and spent many hours in the Prison Ministry. She took every chance she had to tell and show her love for Jesus.

Tony and Ann were quite the globe-trotters; they loved to travel and their passport stamps included Africa, Australia, America, South America as well as most countries in Europe, but their trips to Israel were the most precious to both of them.

Ann made many dear friends, leaving a positive impact on everyone she met. Nothing was more important to her than her Christian faith! She will be dearly missed.

GRAHAM, O. HOWARD

JUN. 14, 1919 – NOV. 15, 2017

HOWARD GRAHAM passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, November 15th at the age of 98 years.

Howard was born in rural Saskatchewan as the oldest of eight children to Gertrude and Orvel Graham. Growing up on the farm, Howard held many jobs and developed a master skill set for woodworking. In 1946, he married the love of his life, the late Margaret Ellen Graham, and together they had three children. The family lived in Ontario where Howard often travelled for work and spent the majority of time with the Ontario Department of Highways. A desire for warmer weather would eventually lead the couple to call Aldergrove, BC their home.

After the passing of his beloved wife, Howard moved to Lethbridge to be closer to family. He spent many days reading western novels, playing cribbage, and admiring the outdoors. He also never passed up the opportunity to enjoy a Tim Hortons coffee and engage in good conversation.

Howard will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his sons, Doug (Linda) Graham and Marty Graham. As well as his daughter, Toni Donna (Mike, and son Logan) Anderson. Also left to cherish the memory of their “Popa” are granddaughters, Jennifer Leroux, Angela Giles, Michelle (Ryan) Hood, and Jessica Anderson. Hilda Driedger

1924 – 2017

Mrs. Hilda Driedger, beloved wife of Dr. Gerhard Driedger, passed away in Lethbridge on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at the age of 93 years. Hilda was born on October 11, 1924 and raised on a farm in the Free State of Danzig (that is now northern Poland) near the Vistula River and the Baltic Sea. Raised as a Mennonite, she was the second youngest of 5 brothers and sisters. She excelled at school and wanted to become an architect. However, the war came. She became a refugee in West Germany where she married her childhood sweetheart, Gerhard, in 1945. In 1951, they emigrated to Canada with their first two children, Walter and Renate Maria. They arrived in Coaldale and then moved to Lethbridge where Bernhard was born. Then, in 1957, they moved to Philadelphia where Peter was born. Returning to Lethbridge in 1960, she was active in the church and at home. Hilda and Gerhard travelled to many places, including a year (1970) in Papua New Guinea where they volunteered at a Lutheran Mission. She was the original scrapbooker with many volumes reflecting her life experiences. The grandchildren (9 in all) started to arrive, reigniting her love for small children. Then it was retirement and the great-grandchildren began until there were 10 at last count. Hilda leaves behind her legacy of their cultured “era”. Her sense of tradition and decorum, her ability to put pen to paper and to journalize traditions will always be with us. She was a strong and resourceful woman, an intellectual reader and speaker, and a good listener. She had a sense of humor, she was creative, and she had such a lovely “knowing” smile, always practical and always caring. Always a lover of nature and flowers, Hilda will find new gardens to till and new dishes to cook, because that is what she loved to do. Rest in Peace, Oma. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at CHRIST TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 416 – 12 Street, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Reverend Olivier Ravelojaona officiating. A Lunch will follow the service along with a Graveside Service at the Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, a donation in Hilda’s name can be made to the Christ Trinity Memorial Fund, 416 – 12 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta, T1J 2R4.

MABEL CHARLOTTE STEEN

(nee KIRBY)

January 3, 1924 – November 25, 2017

93 years well lived! Mabel was born in Edmonton, the eldest of 2 daughters, to Clif and Marion Kirby. She had a wonderful childhood with loving parents. She learned from her parents at a young age to be a good person and lived each day extolling this virtue to the many people she met. Mabel was predeceased by her parents and her sister Jean.

Mabel was an adventurer all her life. As a youngster she played hockey in school, using Eaton’s catalogues, held on by jar rings, as leg pads. She was a gifted pianist and often entertained friends and family with her playing. Mabel taught piano when she was only a teenager.

In 1943 she married G W Lee Steen, her high school sweetheart, and followed him to Halifax and Ottawa during the war years. Lee served in the navy and Mabel worked in the library at the naval building in Ottawa. She also worked as a bank teller in her younger years.

After living briefly in Edmonton, Westlock and Medicine Hat, the family settled in Lethbridge in 1952. Mabel was a great mother, home maker and cook and took good care of her sons, Terry (Carol) and Lloyd (Sarah). The greatest joys in her life were her grandchildren, Cam (Jenn), Taryn (Nevin) and Jonathan (Ella) and her great grandchildren, Darian, Jayda, Isaac, Brooklynn, Mika and Hunter. She was ‘second mom/nana’ to so many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family. She also loved the many dogs she had throughout her life.

Mabel will long be remembered for her tremendous sense of humour and the loving friendship she provided to so many friends and family. She sent more greeting and birthday cards than any person who ever lived! Mabel took an interest in people and made people feel special. Those who knew her well will forever miss her warmth, generosity, sense of humour and her way with words. And of course she was famous for her pumpkin cookies and hundreds of loaves of cheese bread she made for others!

This obituary was personally approved by Mabel – for, as those of you who knew her know, she always had to have the last word! We will miss you, Mabel, and we smile broadly each time we think of you!

If you wish to make a donation in Mabel’s memory, local charities (Woods Homes, Streets Alive, YWCA Harbour House) and Animal Shelters were her favourites!

A Celebration of Mabel’s Life will be held at the GERMAN CANADIAN CLUB – 902 6 St N, Lethbridge, AB on Friday, December 1st, 2017 from 1:00 P.M. – 3:00 P.M. with a short program being offered at 1:30 P.M.

Mabel was predeceased by her parents, her sister Jean and her husband Lee.

MELVIN ARTHUR NAUMANN

February 12, 1954 –

November 21, 2017

Mel passed away in his sleep at home on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017 at the age of 63 yrs. He is survived by his children Kristan and Kristina; grandsons Austin and Trevor; 4 sisters (Creston, B.C.); and his partner – “the love of my life” – Lorette Poulette.

Mel was a hardworking, independent, proud and private person who loved being outside among nature whenever he could. He was a good man with a kind and generous heart who helped anyone whenever he could, accepting nothing in return. Mel and I knew we were soulmates the moment we met. We quarreled like most people do, but loved each other deeply for 5 1/2 yrs. I miss him every moment of every day, wherever I go and in whatever I do, and will for my lifetime. Holding hands and walking together always – Lorette.

Cremation held on November 27, 2017.

SERA

MARGARETTE SERA, beloved wife of the late Frank Sera, of Lethbridge, passed away after a lengthy illness at the Chinook Regional Hospital on November 27, 2017 at the age of 87 years.

She is survived by her loving children Larry (Shirley) Sera and Darlene (Rick) Whitton; four grandchildren Scott (Regan) Sera, Chris Sera and Shannon (Shane) Foote; as well as seven great-grandchildren Willow Sera, Wren Sera, Bridget Sera, Sloane Sera, Raeanna Foote, Rhys Foote and Aidan Foote.

Margarette will be sadly missed by her lifelong best friend Ethel Kertesz, whom she confided in most days, as well as her sister in law Elizabeth Sera and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband Frank, parents Vendel and Rose Kish, and brother Vendel.

Margarette was born in Lethbridge on November 8, 1930 and was raised and educated in the Lethbridge area. In 1951, she married Frank Sera and they farmed together until 1980 when they retired and moved to Coaldale. Mom was a hardworking, dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother and dear friend to all that knew her. She was happy to welcome everyone to her home with a good home cooked meal, sometimes working for days making homemade noodles for her chicken soup – cabbage rolls and fried chicken with all the trimmings. It was truly a labor of love.

After a well deserved retirement from the farm and moving into Coaldale, she continued to work tirelessly tending to her vegetable and flower gardens which she enjoyed immensely.

After a well deserved retirement from the farm and moving into Coaldale, she continued to work tirelessly tending to her vegetable and flower gardens which she enjoyed immensely.

Mom was a very kind hearted, giving person who always remembered everyone’s birthday with a card and a birthday song. There were always stories to be told – memories to share – and laughter – she loved to laugh. These are the memories of her that we will always cherish.

A Celebration of Margarette’s Life will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB on Friday, January 5, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Hugh Jack officiating.

OLEKSY

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of BILL OLEKSY at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Friday, December 1, 2017 at the age of 91 years.

Left to mourn is Jennie, his wife of 63 years (to whom he was a fantastic loving partner); son Brent (Jamie), grandchildren Rick, Jody (Craig) and great-grandchildren Tesla, Nolan, Calder; daughter, Brenda (Bob) and grandson Chase; and youngest son, Barton (Cris) and granddaughter Katya. He is also survived by his sister Sylvia (Richard).

He was predeceased by his mother, father, three brothers and three sisters as well as his father-in-law and mother-in-law, with whom he was very close. Bill was born in Strong Pine, Saskatchewan, on October 3, 1926. He attended a small, one-room country school until grade nine and, when his family moved to BC, finished his schooling in Langley. He then made his way to Winnipeg to enroll in Teachers College. After graduation, he taught in many rural schools before settling in Swan River, Manitoba in 1953 to teach grades five through seven. He met Jennie, a fellow teacher, married her in 1956, and had three wonderful children.

For a change of pace, he moved his family to Lethbridge in 1967 where he managed the Super Sonic Car Wash for a year. He then returned to his first love – teaching. He taught in many schools, but his favorite time was as principal of the Dorothy Gooder School for eight years. At the same time as teaching and raising his children, he attended night school at the University of Lethbridge and obtained his B.A. He is fondly remembered as the teacher who loved to organize field trips and get his students to have more fun in and out of the classroom. Bill retired from teaching in 1987, but kept busy doing a number of things, including driving for Handi-Bus and working with AMA to teach driving to high school students. One of his favorite sayings was that, if he had to do it all over again, he’d have more fun!

Bill was famous for his wild selection of ties, suit jackets and mismatched socks. His collection of clothes was featured on CBC and was on display at the Galt Museum in Lethbridge.

Bill was also well known around town at Christmas, where he would stroll through different businesses playing Christmas carols on his mandolin. His mandolin playing was also enjoyed by many family members when he and Jennie would call to play and sing happy birthday.

The family would like to give a special thank you to nurses Kara, Katie, Doctors Plotnyk and Winder and all of the amazing staff on the 4th floor of the CRH.

A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held in the spring of 2018. Details will be announced at a later date.

CLARKE

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of ALLEN CLARKE at the age of 60 years. He was born on May 5, 1957 and raised in Lethbridge.

Allen passed away suddenly on December 2, 2017 at this home with his family by his side. Our beloved son, father, papa, brother, uncle, partner and dear friend will always be remembered.

Allen is predeceased by his mother Lois Clarke and survived by his father Ronald, son Cody (Ivory, Phoenix and Xander) son Kyle (Paige and Etnee), partner Launa (Lulu), brother Ron (Nancy and Terri), sister Lisa Lutz (Darren, Keanna and Tori), brother Jim (Deb and Miyah) and many close and cherished friends.

Allen was a proud man and affected many in a positive way. Anyone who knew “Big Al” knew about his love of cars, his need for speed and tinkering in his garage. He owned a transport company called “Greg’s Transport” which he purchased on December 1, 1980 and lived by the motto “my customers were always my friends, and this truck will stop at nothing to make them my first priority.” Allen had a passion for hunting and never missed a season; many will say he needed to perfect that “third gear sneak.” Among all these affections, his heart was, and will still remain with his family cabin at Duck Lake, MT where he spent most of his time with the ones he loved.

At the request of Allen, no formal service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alberta Children’s Hospital, 2888 Shaganappi Trail N.W., Calgary, AB T3B 6A8, per Allen’s choice of charity.

The family wants to thank everyone for their kind words, thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

To all those who knew Big Al – “Well I S’pose!”
