POELMAN

Wilma Poelman (nee DeKoning) went home to be with her savior and lord peacefully while surrounded by her family on October 29, 2017 at the age of eighty-eight. Wilma was the beloved wife of Ralph John Poelman. On October 11 of this year they had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, in her room at Good Samaritan Park Meadows Village. She still enjoyed a bite of cake with her family.

Wilma was born December 21, 1928 in the family home in Lynnville county, Iowa, United States. She was raised by a young widowed mother and uncle and Grandmother and aunt. It was a childhood full of hard work, and chores at a young age, she was proud of her cow milking at age 5, and she loved sleeping by young hatched chicks in the brooder house, as a child.

She loved her Iowa roots, and was proud to take that heritage into the family life she shared with her husband Ralph. They met at a young people’s convention in Lethbridge in 1957 and married soon after the convention.

Adjusting to Alberta farm life was a bit tougher than she thought, but being resilient, she strived to make a good life, one that was filled with lots of children, gardens, and blue skies.

She spent hours working tirelessly on her sewing, quilting, crocheting, and patching. She was a fabulous cook and baker. She loved preserving food, and was always trying a new idea.

Christian Reformed church life was important, but she always missed her reformed roots from Sully, Iowa. However, she was rock solid in her faith, she always knew the Lord as her personal Saviour.

She wasn’t afraid to challenge and push her family, and took great delight when her beloved children exceeded her expectations.

She was the kind of lady who said it like it was, whether you cared to hear it or not, but she was greatly admired for her tough grit and compassion. This was the lady who wasn’t afraid to adopt a passel of kids, and get her husband, and son to love them as much as she did.

Fondly loved and remembered by her children: Albert(Darlene) Poelman of Granum; Dena(Gary)Slezina of Lethbridge; Jerry(Michelle) Poelman of Fort Macleod; Leroy(Sharon)Poelman of Granum; Doris(Len)Moorman of Coaldale.

Grandchildren: Nathan Poelman, Emily Poelman, Cyrill & Michelle Newell, Jonathan & Sharla Hummel, Jennifer & Mike Duffy, Michael & Tiffany Poelman; Ryan & Breanne Poelman; Travis(Bailey) Poelman, Bailey Poelman, Michaela Grace, Shaira Joy, John Arron Samonte; Nicole& Steve Boot, Katherine Poelman, Leonard Moorman. And 21 Great Grandchildren.

She is survived by her only sister, Alberta(Arthur) Havinga of Lethbridge, and her children Adrianna(Dyce)Bolduc, Jennie(Brian) Chernwichan, Walter(Theresa )Havinga, and Elza Bouwman.

Her brother and sister in laws on her husband’s side: Klaas Poelman, Jennie Williamson, William(Hetty) Poelman, and Henrietta Wierenga.

She was predeceased by her parents: Albert & Mary DeKoning, her daughter, Leona Poelman and two grand daughters Kimberly Ann Poelman and Kyndra ReAnn Poelman; her in-laws George and Mendine Poelman, brothers and sister-in-laws, Hilda and Gerhard Vos, Ralph Williamson, Annie Poelman, Enno Wierenga, and her nephews George Poelman, Sidney Havinga, Clarence and Arnold Vos.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Friday November 4, 2017 at the Granum Christian Reformed Church (5 miles east of Granum on highway 519) with Reverend Henry Veldboom Officiating. Interment at Granum Christian Reformed Church Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Kyndra’s Foundation of Love c/o Christian Stewardship Services, 214A-500 Alden Road, Markham, Ontario L3R 5H5 or a charity of choice.

WENSVEEN

MARGARET LUDMILA WENSVEEN (nee Vrabel) beloved wife of 63 years to John; mother, grandma, great-grandma, daughter, sister, aunt, mother in law and friend was called to Eternal Rest on October 28, 2017 at the age of 81 years.

She was born on May 23, 1936 in the same little yellow house on the outskirts of Raymond in which her brothers, Joe and Bill, were born in 1931 and 1933, all in those tough depression years. Their hardworking parents labored in the sugar beet fields and they had to pull out of school their 10-year-old daughter, Ann, to take care of the younger siblings. Their father also hauled beet pulp to several farmers who were raising cattle.

By 1939, the family had a wee bit of savings that they used as an application for a very large farm loan, through Mr. Henry Schwartz, with which they invested in their one-quarter section Picture Butte farm. Mr. Schwartz helped out many farmers; he spoke their languages and kindheartedly understood their concerns.

On October 28, 1940, Margaret’s father presented her with a special gift she had been praying for – a brand new baby for the family. As the midwife was late, our “Dr. Father” did the honours himself with the help of his old country Hungarian medical books. Both Mother and Baby came through well and Margaret was ecstatic with her very own little dark-haired baby brother, Andy. They bonded as close and caring siblings with a special understanding and sharing between them. When Margaret entered the first grade at Barrhill School, she made her very first show-and-tell project her two-year-old brother. Shortly afterwards, together, they conducted a very sad funeral for their special little pet doggie “Darky.” She had been run over and killed on the road by the farm.

Years later, it would be Andy dubbing Margaret’s hubby as “Dutchie,” a title he enjoyed much more than the usual ones like “Stubborn Dutchman!”

In 1948, the family sold the Picture Butte farm and invested into a larger half-section farm just south of Barnwell, as well as a house in Lethbridge at 722 – 18th Street South. Margaret completed the seventh grade at Barrhill School and started the eighth grade at St. Basil’s in north Lethbridge, then moved onto the newly built St. Joseph’s High School in south Lethbridge.

In 1952, Margaret took her training with Alberta Government Telephones and became a telephone operator. She married her “Dutchman” on September 15, 1954 and together they raised their six children. Margaret is survived by her dear family; husband John; son Jim (Mary Anne) Wensveen and their children Christina (Chris) Wedman, and their child Eamon; Jonathan (Avra Kates); Patrick (Chelsea King); daughter Cathy Moor and her daughters Christi (Paul Kingsmith) and their children Bentley and Lennon; Nicole (Brendan) Coffey; Bev (Dale) Ptycia and their children Thomas (Tiffany), and their child Henry; Katie (Matt Wood) and James; daughter Julie (Larry) Neigel and their children Brynen (Kelli) and Alyssa; son Rich (Deanne Johnson Eng) Wensveen and their children Chelsey, Justin, Jordan, Kayla (Logan Lizzi), Andrew and Kelsey; and son Rob (Cathy) Wensveen and their children Jennifer (Jesse Buchholz) and Travis.

Margaret is also survived by her sister Ann Chenger and brother Andy Vrabel, and by Gayle Wensveen, mother to Chelsey.

On John’s side, she is survived by his brothers Gerard (Terry) Westwood, Quince (Dianne) Wensveen, George (Denise) Wensveen.

In addition, Margaret is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

Margaret was predeceased by her parents William Vrabel Sr. and Julia Vrabel; her brother Bill Jr. and his spouse, Shirley; her brother Joe and his spouse, Linda. She was also predeceased by her daughter-in-law Lynn Wensveen; Henry Moor, father to Christi and Nicole; her nephews Roy Chenger and Robbie Vrabel; her brother-in-law John Chenger; and her niece Sharleen Sylvester.

On John’s side, she was predeceased by her father-in-law and mother-in-law Jacobus and Quirina Wensveen; her nephew Ian Wensveen; and sister-in-law Rita Bosch.

Back in 1958, Margaret joined the staff of St. Michael’s Hospital as a switchboard operator. The hospital atmosphere was most interesting to her and she learned a lot. As some have known, the pathways of some of Margaret’s life were not very easy; she struggled with bipolar depressive disorder and also underwent various surgeries and procedures. Coping with this cancer has been both very challenging and a new learning experience – not only for Margaret, but for her loved ones too. The following insight has given us comfort, strength and courage, and we now share it with all of you on behalf of Margaret:

“What Cancer Cannot Do:

Cancer is so limited,

It cannot cripple Love,

It cannot shatter Hope,

It cannot corrode Faith,

It cannot destroy Peace,

It cannot kill Friendship,

It cannot suppress Memories,

It cannot silence Courage,

It cannot invade the Soul,

It cannot steal eternal Life,

It cannot conquer the Spirit.”

JENSEN

MILDRED WRIGHT JENSEN, beloved wife of the late Brent Jensen, passed away on the morning of October 30, 2017, in the Raymond Alberta Hospital, at the age of 87 years. She slipped peacefully away after an extended illness. Mildred was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on March 12, 1930, the youngest child of James Ninian Wright and Mary Carbert Wright. She spent most of her young life growing up in Raymond. At the tender age of ten she and her siblings lost their mother to pneumonia, and while they endured the hardships of not having their mother in their lives, they benefited from and enjoyed the love and support of wonderful friends in Raymond. She and her older sister Rose were especially loyal loving sisters who sustained each other through difficulties, and both, being blessed with the gift of pleasantness and a great shared sense of humor, created happiness all around them. She was sealed to her eternal companion, Brent Walton Jensen in the Cardston Temple. She was the love of his life as he was hers. Together, they lived in Raymond and raised their family. Mildred was a loving and devoted wife and mother. Her family’s home was full of her warmth, her good cheer and natural mirth. Mildred loved being a mother and her mothering extended to all who knew her. Her home was filled with the good smells of her delicious baking and she always had something wonderful to feed any family or guests. Her love touched every family member and she knew and loved each one well. She is remembered fondly by former Raymond Hospital staff and patients for her many years of service there. Since the passing of her husband, Brent, in 1991, she has devoted herself to her children and grandchildren. Mildred is survived by children Rick (Charlotte) Jensen of Raymond, Alberta, Dianne (Bob) Larson of Whitefish, Montana, Ken Jensen of Raymond, Alberta, and Dennis (Kelly) Jensen of Raymond, Alberta. She has 21 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Brent on November 26, 1991, her great- grandchild, Eva Louise Jensen, her sister Rose, and her brothers Jim and Basil.

Mildred, Mom, Grandma, Aunt Milly, is dearly loved and will be missed, but all sorrow is swallowed up in the thoughts of the joyous reunion between her and her loved ones. Thank you to the people serving at Good Sams for their kindness during Mildred’s final years. We are grateful to the staff and doctors at the Raymond Hospital for their loving care in her final days.

The Funeral Service will be held Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Knight Street Chapel, 260 E 200 N, followed immediately by a graveside ceremony at the Temple Hill Cemetery in Raymond. GORHAM

MADISON ELIZABETH GORHAM passed away in Edmonton, AB on November 5, 2017 at the age of 19 months. She is survived by her parents Zach and Megan Gorham; grandparents Peter and Colleen Drew, and B.J. Gorham; and aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was predeceased by her grandpa Berry Gorham.

Madison was a light to all those around her. Despite her short time on earth she had a far-reaching impact on many people for good. She had a radiant smile, an infectious laugh and a hilarious sense of humor. She had a great interest in people and would smile, wave, and say “hi” to almost everyone she saw. She had a way of drawing people in and wrapping them around her little finger. She went through immense health challenges that involved a great deal of pain and discomfort with grace, cheerfulness, and great bravery. She was a tenacious fighter and her resilience was awe-inspiring. She loved music, pens, water bottles, bath time, ripping up kleenex, and Peppa Pig. Words cannot describe the void she has left behind in her absence, nor the degree to which she is missed. We take comfort in the knowledge that she is with her Grandpa Berry in a much better world than this and that we will be with them again someday. We wish to thank all the doctors, nurses, and other staff at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton and the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary for their remarkable work with Madison.

The Funeral Service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Magrath Stake Center, Magrath, AB on Monday, November 13th, at 11:00 a.m.

Friends may meet the family from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Interment to follow in the Spring Coulee Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers please donate to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and consider becoming an organ donor.

Silvio Mauro

1924 – 2017

Silvio Mauro, beloved husband of the late Rosina Mauro, passed away peacefully in the loving arms of his family at St. Michael’s Health Centre, on Wednesday, November 8th, 2017 at the age of 93 years.

Born in the hamlet of Grimaldi, in the province of Cosenza, Italy, on March 12, 1924, he was the third child to Angelo and Anna. From the beginning, Silvio was taught a devotion to God, the value of family and his Italian traditions. Having his Father immigrate as a young boy played a significant role in Silvio’s life. He was primarily raised by his Mother and often spoke of his relationship with her. She had a huge impact on creating the man he was and leaving him with the solid foundation of loving every human being and to always bring happiness to their lives. Although countries separated him and his Father, it was he that built his stature, respect, values and dignity. His Dad’s sacrifice taught Silvio what it meant to strive for the best life for his family. Silvio was a cabinet maker by trade. At the age of 23, Silvio married the love of his life, Rosina Vercillo and they started their family. He made the decision in 1951 to follow in his Father’s footsteps and immigrated to Canada without his family to create a better life for them. His wife and two young boys were reunited with him in 1954 in Trail, B.C. Shortly after, they moved to Lethbridge where they raised their four children and where he resided until his passing. His strength, determination and strong faith in God are what guided him through life’s journey. Silvio demonstrated his strong faith by his conviction to the rosary by having them throughout his home and around his neck. This was his way of fulfilling his testament.

Silvio was a hardworking, devoted, nurturing husband, papa, nanno and cata nanno. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and especially the little ones. He continued with his Wife’s qualities of taking great pleasure in creating a home full of hospitality and wonderful “Silvio style” homemade meals. The most important part of his life was his family. He strived to create a life full of love, laughter, and strong family values. Silvio also established a vast circle of friends.

Silvio loved to entertain, had endless stories and welcomed everyone into his home. His ability to find joy in every situation was displayed through his spontaneous dancing and singing; without rehearsal. His sense of humour and playfulness were what attracted people to him. When in Silvio’s company, no matter who you were, no matter what age or status, his charismatic demeanor was engaging. He had a special, natural power that gave him the ability to influence other people and attract their attention and admiration.

Silvio was a founding member of the Lethbridge Italian Canadian Culture Center. He was a 4th degree Knight and was always honoured to serve at masses.

Silvio left an imprint on everyone who was lucky enough to spend time with him. We are all forever changed because of this kind-hearted man. Ti amo per sempre.

Silvio is survived by his daughter, Anna (Daniel) Zrim of Lethbridge; sons Angelo (Linda) Mauro of Kamloops, B.C. and Joe (Selena) Mauro of Lethbridge; a daughter-in-law Pauline Mauro of Lethbridge; seven grandchildren: Ashley and Stefan Zrim; Rosina (Jason) Deak, Billy (Brandy) Mauro, Alyssa Mauro; Analea (Michael) Balint, and Michael (Jamie) Mauro; ten great-grandchildern: Matthew, Jade Deak; Joelynn, Bryson Mauro; Carter, Zylan, Nico Balint; Siena, Milan, and Lucio Mauro; sister-in-law Teresa Vercillo; and numerous relatives in Italy, United States, and Canada.

Silvio was predeceased by his loving wife Rosina; son Michele “Mike”; parents Angelo and Anna; sister Rosaria Gallo; and brother Giuseppe.

Vigil rights (Prayers) will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Monday, November 13, 2017 at the MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street S. Lethbridge, Alberta.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at the ST. MARTHA’S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 355 Columbia Blvd. West, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Father Eric Nelson celebrant. Interment will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery, Family Plot.

STANFIELD

GLORIA EMMA STANFIELD, of Lethbridge, passed away surrounded by her family at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Friday, November 10th, 2017 at the age of 66 years.

Left to cherish Gloria’s memory is her daughter Tammy (Jason) Ruff, as well as her two grandsons Braden & Devin Ruff. Gloria is also survived by her sister Melody Logan and her nephew Jason (Kristy) Logan and their children Chloe, Ashton & Chad. She will also be forever remembered by numerous extended family members and dear friends.

Gloria was predeceased by her parents Merton and Blossom Stanfield.

Gloria’s biggest joys in life were her daughter Tammy and spending time with her two grandsons, whom she adored. Gloria was an incredible person that loved to socialize and help with everything she could. She was a genuine woman with a heart of gold and all of her occupations reflected this. Some of the things that Gloria enjoyed in life were going to garage sales with her sister, spending Saturday nights with Gail and Rod at the Lethbridge Legion and had an incredible capacity to care for others before herself. This was evident in the time she spent baking for others and even delivering her baked goods and dinners for her family & friends.

In keeping with Gloria’s wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held. Instead, please remember her for the kind and caring woman who she was.

In lieu of flowers, and in memory of Gloria, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation at http://www.heartandstroke.ca

June 12, 1943 – Nov. 7, 2017

Harry will be forever remembered by his two sons Robert Shane (Leah) Boersma of Edmonton and Christopher Tate (Janie) Boersma of Lethbridge and also by his three precious grandchildren Daniel Shane, Jacob Robert and Jessie Irene Boersma. Harry’s family immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands, landed at Pier 21 in Halifax on April 1, 1953 and from there Settled in Taber, AB. Harry had a passion for nature and his life’s work was spent in some form of agriculture: from hoeing in sugar beets as a child, to working on a ranch, riding the range, a bull rider and later a rodeo clown, and working on different farms and ranches.

After his 2 cardiac arrests, his priorities changed and he made sure that God was first in all things. Called to a life of service, he loved ushering at church and he was always so happy to see you and to welcome you with a hug and a curtsey! He was happiest when he could get a smile or a laugh just to help brighten your day.

In his last years, when he couldn’t work anymore, he fell in love with scroll sawing. Many hours were spent cutting out intricate pieces, saying, “I’ll start a business,” only to give most of his works away. He loved to go fishing and touring around our beautiful province. A wonderful husband and proud father of his two boys, his family meant everything to him.

A Celebration of Harry’s Life will be held at THIRD DAY CHURCH, #90 – 550 WT Hill Blvd. South, Lethbridge, AB on Friday, November 17, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Dick Deweert officiating.
