BIKMAN May 28, 1920 – September 29, 2017

Erma (Rasmussen) Bikman died peacefully in her sleep, September 29, 2017. She had dementia for the past few years, but never lost her cheerful spirit and grateful nature. She was born on the family farm southwest of Raymond, on May 28, 1920, the 3rd of 5 daughters and 5th child of George Rasmussen and Edna McBride Rasmussen. She had two older brothers. She was predeceased by all of them, as well as her beloved husband of nearly 75 years, Bill Bikman, and their precious daughter, Debra Edna Bikman Bird and daughter-in-law, Suzy. Left to mourn her passing and celebrate a life well lived, are her sons, Gary and Shane; Gary’s wife, Sheila; son-in-law, Craig Bird; 31 grandchildren and 71 great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Erma was a hard worker and while growing up, did her share on the family farm, including milking cows, herding them on horseback, tending the large garden and helping to clean and care for their home. She was a good student and excelled at math. Her love of numbers led her to study accounting at the LDS Business College in Salt Lake City. Upon returning to southern Alberta, Erma worked as a bookkeeper at a local service station and later for Claude Bolton’s accounting firm. It was while working at the service station that she met the man who’d become her husband and eternal companion. They married for time, in Medicine Hat on November 7th, 1942, while Bill was serving in the Canadian Air Force stationed there. (In October 1980, they were sealed for all eternity in the Cardston Temple) Erma was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many leadership and teaching positions. Her example and encouragement helped her children follow in her footsteps. “She taught us how to pray and develop a personal relationship with God” was the praise and credit her children, Gary, Debra & Shane often gave. Erma was very social and enjoyed the company of others. She also liked bowling and golf. The latter became a lifelong passion. It was part of the motivation for her to convince Bill to buy a winter home in Palm Springs where she could golf 4 or 5 times a week. And she was good. She didn’t hit a long ball but it was always straight down the middle. One of her sayings was, “Drive for show, putt for dough.” She usually made a few bucks from the “girls” she golfed with. Erma was a meticulous housekeeper and terrific cook, as anyone who’s eaten her butter tarts or boiled raisin cookies can attest. She even learned to make one of her husband’s favorite Jewish dishes, Kasha. It became a regular part of their delicious roast beef dinners. Erma was very entrepreneurial. She opened what may well have been the first women’s fitness center in Lethbridge. She went on to help several friends in other cities do the same. She also started and owned Carousel Knitting. It was here that she became very well known for her knitting classes and the fashion shows she staged at the Yates Center. Erma’s models were her lovely customers wearing the attractive dresses and outfits she’d helped them create. Her beautiful teenage daughter, Debra, also an accomplished knitter, was her favorite model. Erma’s proudest accomplishment and title was as a beloved “Babba.” She showered her grandchildren and great grandchildren with love, affection, encouragement…and lots of hand knit sweaters and outfits. They cherished her attention and appreciated all the life lessons she shared. She missed Bill. The 22 days since his passing is the longest they were ever apart during nearly 75 years of marriage. It’s a testament to the strength of their love that she has now gone to be with him. We suspect Bill may have appeared to her in a dream and promised he’d booked a tee time on a heavenly course for September 30th. Once again, we express deep appreciation for the kind care and loving service provided Erma by the staff at St. Therese Villa. They went above and beyond for her, especially since the death of her husband 3 weeks ago. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 7th, 2017 at 10:00 AM at the CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS – STIRLING CHAPEL, 413 3 St, Stirling, AB, Bishop Jim Seely will preside. Friends may meet the family prior to the service at 9:00 AM until 9:45 AM. Interment will follow the service in the Bikman section of the Stirling Cemetery.

Jonsson, Sharon Rose

(nee Johnson)

July 20, 1934 – September 30, 2017

Sharon Rose Jonsson passed away on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at the age of 83 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Anita; grandchildren Andria, Juan, Joshua, and Kelsey; great grandchildren Annika, Chloé, Helaman, Kimberly, and Kevin. Her siblings are Grant & Elmoyne Johnson, Keith & Molly McBride, Kelvin and Arta Johnson,  Beverly & Virginia Johnson, Preston & Maurine Johnson and Betty & Ralph Sabey. Sharon’s parents are Miles “Jack” & Bessie (nee Thomas) Johnson. They raised their 8 children in the town of Barnwell, Alberta. These were happy, gospel centered, family times where education and learning were much valued. Sharon, like her mother before her, decided to become a teacher. In the first year of her teaching career, Sharon met a young man named Osten Jonsson, a recent Swedish immigrant, who invited her to the town’s upcoming dance. Out of this first date, a lifetime friendship grew; blessing them in marriage and in parenthood. Later they moved to Calgary, where Sharon would teach elementary school for the next 31 years. She found great joy in helping her students learn and the time spent working with other teachers. The beautiful friendships and cherished memories made while teaching, kept her seeking opportunities to learn and to serve; often being centered in the joy of family history work. Sharon treasures her nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews, as her dear children and friends, finding such happiness in hearing about their lives, sharing time together, and comfort in their many acts of kind service. She also enjoyed ballroom and square dancing. Sharon’s family would like to extend a personal invitation to all who knew her to come and celebrate her life at a Funeral Service and luncheon that will be held for Sharon at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – North Stake Center (5927 Tipton Road NW, Calgary) on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 11:00 am. While raising three children, Darrell did long haul trucking from coast to coast. In 1964, while continuing to truck, he started farming. In 1969, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a pilot and at the age of 86 became a member of the UFO (United Flying Octogenarians). At 49 he started outfitting in the Northwest Territories and three years later he was joined by his son, Duane. For the next 21 years they operated as NWT Outfitters Ltd. Bea Hales

1920 – 2017

Mom always said, “Don’t tell people I passed away, tell them I died.” OK then Mom, here it is: Bea Hales died September 29, 2017, at age 97. Mom did not say, however, that we had to limit what we tell people to only the fact that she died. There’s other stuff that might be said. She was married to Ivan Hales from February 14, 1945 until his death in 1986. Yup, married on Valentine’s Day. Together they raised three kids who turned out not bad (no known warrants) – Wendy (Charles) Jorgenson, Randy (Cidnee) Hales and Gregory (Patricia) Hales. Randy died in 2014. Bea’s three grandchildren are Wendy’s son Chad and Randy’s daughter Lisa and his son Jeremy. Her great grandchildren are Lisa’s two boys Jason and Jesse and Jeremy’s daughter Danica. In her long career Bea was a teacher of children first and subjects second. She was an athlete, an artist, a wife, a mother, an advocate, a reader, a walker, a proud Canadian. However, there was obviously more to her life than what is written above. If you knew Bea and wish to remind yourself of some things or if you didn’t know her and just want to catch a biased glimpse of who she was, please go to mbfunerals.com for a longer obituary. While Bea was a very outgoing and social person she requested that there be no funeral, but in her memory please take a walk in Indian Battle Park, feed the birds, donate to the Food Bank, and hug those you love. Cremation entrusted to Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels.

Bea Hales

Erna Schwarz

1934 – 2017

Mrs. Erna Schwarz of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Mr. Albert Schwarz, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at the age of 83 years.

Erna was born on a farm in Siberia, Russia on August 14, 1934, to parents Auguste and Alexander Kaminski. She attended grade school in Germany and after the War, she upgraded and received her cook’s papers from the Lethbridge Community College. Erna’s hobbies included gardening, fishing and camping. She enjoyed politics, sports, bingo and watching game shows on tv.

Erna married Albert Schwarz in Germany in 1950. Together, they immigrated to Canada in 1952 with their son Ewald. During their first years in Canada, they worked on a farm around Picture Butte and then in the lumber industry in Burmis. They saved enough money for a down payment on a home in Lethbridge, where Albert worked in the construction industry and Erna as a cook until they retired. If you ate out at a restaurant anytime during Erna’s career spanning four decades, she probably cooked a meal for you. Erna worked at the Majorette Café in the 1950’s, the Marquis Hotel, at her own restaurant The Blue Sky Grill in the 1970’s, the Park Plaza in the 1970-1980’s and the Top of the Grandstand in the 1980-1990’s.

The term Super Mom aptly describes Erna. Through these years when times got tough, and there were plenty of those, she’d work two or sometimes even three jobs to make sure her family had everything they needed. She raised three children, Ewald, Egan, and Angie, took care of a sick husband, cooked, cleaned, painted the house, always had a large garden; she canned, pickled, preserved, and froze the produce to keep food costs down and ensure proper nutrition for her family.

After she retired, she kept right on gardening and looking after one or another disabled family member. Her hobbies slipped away one after another as she became more and more frail.

Still, she did her best to take care of her live-in houseguests or company as she called them, her dog Rusty and watch The Price is Right on TV.

Even though she suffered from depression and ill health, the staff at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital really liked her and took wonderful care of her. Thank you so much to all of those great caregivers.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at MARTIN BROTHER’S RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4th Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta. Inurnment to follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

NORTON

KENT WALKER NORTON

On a pleasant winter day, February 12, 1963, in the Raymond Hospital in Raymond, Alberta a precious baby boy was born to Dr. Clair Harker Norton and Gail Louise Walker Norton. He was the eldest of four children to come to this family. Kent was born a normal, happy child and grew into a happy, chubby little baby. But Kent’s life was not to be an easy one. When he was six months old he had his first grand mal epileptic seizure and thus started his battle with epilepsy. Kent grew into a happy and extremely active little boy. He grew up in a wonderful neighbourhood in Raymond where he would often disappear and would be found visiting at one of the neighbours. Kent was a challenge to keep up with as he was always curious, quick and mischievous and had a kind and caring heart. Kent enjoyed going to school and attended the Dorothy Gooder School in Lethbridge. He had good friends and teachers there and loved “shop”, swimming, skating and bowling. This was a very happy time in his life. When Kent was 10 years old his sister Nancy Ruth was born. Kent always had a soft spot in his heart for her, who became a good friend and playmate until she passed away when she was two and a half years old. Kent has waited his whole life to be able to see her again. At 12 years of age, her family moved to Magrath and built a new home on the family farm. Kent loved living next door to his Grandpa and Grandma Norton and living on the farm. He enjoyed being outdoors, helping to do chores and he loved the animals, especially riding his horse. He also had a great love of music and enjoyed playing his guitar, recorder and singing, listening to much loved records, tapes and CD’s.

In 2012 Kent’s family moved into the town of Magrath. The move went well and Kent was happy in his new home. Kent has one attribute which stands out above all others; that is his ability to deal with and be courageous in accepting the lot in life that he had been given, as he has suffered through extreme pain and illness without complaint. For much of his life and especially in his later life pain and illness have been almost a constant companion. Kent passed away on October 4, 2017 at home surrounded by his family, predeceasing his mother Gail Norton, by eight days. His humble spirit and love and companionship will be missed.

He is survived by his father, Clair H. Norton and his mother, Gail Louise Walker Norton; sisters; Denise (Devon) Anderson and Cathy (Brent) Cahoon, his uncle Glen Walker and Mary Anne King and was predeceased by his little sister Nancy and Grandparents; Blaine and Phoebe Norton and Dr. Bernal and Ruby Walker.

Kent and his mom Gail will have a combined Funeral Service at 11.00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS, Magrath Stake Centre: 21E 1st Ave. S Magrath, Alberta.

Friends are welcome to meet with the family on Tuesday October 17, 2017 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Church and Wednesday prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Interment to follow in the Magrath Cemetery.

GAIL LOUISE WALKER NORTON was born on September 25, 1942 in Athabasca, Alberta, the daughter of Dr. Bernal E and Ruby L Walker, where her father taught school. She was raised in Edmonton, where her father taught Education at the University of Alberta. And later moved to Raymond, Alberta after her marriage and sealing to Dr. Clair Norton in 1961. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on October 12, 2017 after a brief battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Gail found happiness in being a homemaker and was known for her fresh bread and homemade jam, quilting, gardening, sewing, family history and love of learning. She found solace in nature and enjoyed teaching her children and grandchildren about insects, animals and the world around them. She was a wonderful mother and taught with patience, love and example. As a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, she held callings in all of the organizations and especially loved Relief Society and serving others. Her life was centered around service and making friends. She loved music and enjoyed playing beautiful music to the residents in Garden City Good Samaritan Society for Relief Society and did this for the past 17 years. She will be remembered for her quiet deeds and genuine love for others, gratitude, service, compassion and the ability to endure trials cheerfully, without complaint.

Her time and devotion was however, always centered on her husband and family. She loved, served and cared for Kent, her special son, for 54 and a half years sacrificing many of her own desires for his welfare.

She will be forever missed by her husband, Dwight Gray; parents, Don and Linda Going; sister, Dawna Lynn Ferguson (John) and their son Jesse, as well as numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and their families. Sheila had many cherished friends that share our sorrow. She was predeceased by her grandparents Gladys and Glenn Going and Dick and Pearl McIntosh. Sheila and her Grandma Pearl were extremely close, for which she was always grateful to have had that opportunity in her life. Sheila was born and grew up in Lethbridge, graduating from Winston Churchill before attending LCC and, ultimately completing her CGA degree through much preservation and self-determination. She worked at Tollestrup Construction and Canbra Foods prior to her last years as a Financial Analyst at Alberta Health Services. Sheila believed in experiencing things to their fullest. She was passionate about her interests and learned as much as she could about each one. Travelling was high on her list of activities. Each trip was researched and planned meticulously so as to enjoy everything the location had to offer. Yearly celebrations were all excuses to carry on traditions, give thoughtful gifts and celebrate with family and friends. Sheila had a love of life with a kind soul, always looking for ways to brighten someone’s day. She was one of a kind; she will be remembered and missed always by all those she touched. MADISON

HAZEL BEATRICE MADISON passed away at Garden Vista in Magrath, AB on Friday, October 13, 2017, just 18 days before her 96th birthday.

She was predeceased by her parents; Fred and Lillian Breen, one brother, Charlie Breen, one sister, Gladys Leishman, son-in-law, Fred Stocker, and a brother-in-law Eric Pedersen.

Survived by Son: Lonny (Shirley) Madison of Stirling, AB, Grandchildren; Shelly (Ken) Holzli of Taber, AB, Danna (Darcy) Ferguson of Vauxhall, AB, Sherry (Dan) Moore of Raymond, AB, Daughter: Michelene Stocker of Lethbridge, AB, Grandchildren; Craig (Judy) Stocker of Raymond , AB, Sandra (Peter) Goodall of Summerland, BC, and 16 great-grandchildren; one Brother, Tom Breen of Magrath, AB and Sister, Betty Pedersen of Chilliwack, BC, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Hazel was born November 1, 1921, and was raised on the farm in Del Bonita. Her mother passed away from a ruptured appendix when she was only 10, the oldest of their 5 children. So, between their Dad, her and few housekeepers, they raised the family on the farm. Then in 1943, her Dad passed away from pneumonia. She was now 22 and her oldest brother, Tom was 19, as a result she has always been a very hard worker. She worked for a few of the neighbors, for a family in Milk River and cooked at the oil well camp. This is where she met and married her husband and had two children, eventually returning to the family farm to raise them and help her brother.

She took great pride in her immaculate house, her huge garden, and her amazing homemade bread. She did needlework and became a very good seamstress, having to make most of the clothes. She loved to play softball and as a child, I remember it was the highlight of the day. She loved to play cards and many a night was spent playing with the neighbors.

In 2005 she and her brother sold the farm and moved to Magrath. Her last few years were spent in the Garden Vista where she still played crib and bingo, and when we visited she still got great joy out of beating us. She was so proud of her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren as you could tell by the amount of pictures that decorated her shelves at her home.

A Celebration of Life will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 – Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB on Friday October 20, 2017 at 11:00 A.M., with Reverend Sarah Wallace officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service. A time of fellowship & refreshments will follow. Interment will be held at Archmount Memorial Gardens, Lethbridge, AB. In memory of Hazel, donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, 724 – 13th Street North, Lethbridge, AB, T1H 2T1, or Breast Cancer Research and Education Fund, 366 St. Paul Street, St. Catharines, ON L2R 3N2.

Raymond Arthur Lyckman

May 26, 1913 – October 13, 2017

Mr. Raymond Lyckman of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Joyce Lyckman, passed away on Friday, October 13, 2017 at the age of 104 years. Ray was born and raised on the farm east of Carmangay. He rode in a horse drawn buggy to Plainfield school with his siblings. Ray loved the farm and he was willing to work hard. He much preferred helping with the animals than going to school. During his lifetime farming methods changed from horses pulling the equipment to threshing machines and to tractors and combines. Ray was thrilled when his Dad bought a tractor and allowed Ray to drive it. In 1934 a new school teacher, Hilda Stockwell, arrived at Plainfield. Ray courted this young teacher and they were married on October 14, 1939. In 1957 Ray, Hilda, Norma and Warren moved to Lethbridge where they became involved in the community. While living in Lethbridge Ray farmed in the Turin area. He also owned a few quarter horses. Ray and Warren would ride the horses and they were active in the 4H club. Hilda died in 1979. Ray attended seniors dances where he met Joyce Eely Langford. Ray and Joyce were married on November 15, 1980. Ray and Joyce have been together for 36 years. During that time they were active with the Golden Mile Dancers performing at many local functions and also travelling to other cities and providing entertainment. They often walked up and down the coulees and through Indian Battle Park. They were active members of LSCO. Ray and Joyce lived at Martha’s House for several years before moving to St. Therese Villa where Joyce now resides. Besides his loving wife Joyce, Ray is survived by his children Norma (Henry) Bosman and Warren Lyckman; grandchildren Laura Bosman (Jim Ling) and Diane Bosman (Paul Bognar); great-grandchildren Rachel and Amanda Ling. Joyce’s children Geof Langford, Virginia Birss, Carolyn Langford, Kathy and Denton Koenig; 7 step-grandchildren and 12 great step-grandchildren. Ray was very loved by all and will be greatly missed by his wife, family and friends. Ray’s family wish to extend a special thanks to Dr. Frick and the staff at St. Therese Villa for their compassionate care. A Private Family memorial service will be held at a later date. For those who wish, memorial donations in Ray’s name may be made to the McKillop United Church Renovation Fund, 2329 15 Ave. S., Lethbridge, Alberta, T1K 0X5.

Sheila Going

1970 – 2017

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we are announcing the loss of Sheila Faye Going on October 12, 2017 at the young age of 46. A Celebration of Sheila’s Life will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, October 20, 2017 at the MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 4 Street S., Lethbridge, Alberta. Cremation entrusted to Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels.

STITT, Edward (Ted) David

January 14, 1957 – Saskatoon, SK

October 9, 2017 – Calgary, AB

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Ted Stitt on Thanksgiving Day, Monday, October 9, 2017, while visiting a good friend in Calgary.

He was born in Saskatoon in January 1957; attended Brevoort Park Elementary and Walter Murray Collegiate. He moved to Lethbridge in 1972 and continued his schooling at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute where he met many lifelong friends. He worked hard at different occupations mostly involving building and construction throughout southern Alberta and the Lower Mainland in BC. He learned how to do things right and made sure everyone who worked for him knew what a good job was and when it was well done. Cut it, fit it, caulk it, paint it and call’er done! His motto “I love what I do and you will too” was known far and wide. He was a lover of all his friends and family; an unique character who lived life on his terms and shared his hard earned wisdom with many and all; a soul so many related to. While a healthy life style was not always at the top of his agenda he made many friends along the way, more than most people. He will be missed terribly and remembered most fondly by those who called him friend, brother, cousin or uncle. The world is a lesser place without him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the T-Bar Pub at the Castle Mountain Resort (Pincher Creek, AB) on Saturday, October 21, 2017 from 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.

John “Jack” Foster

1923 – 2017

John (Jack) Porter Foster, beloved husband of the late Beatrice May Foster, peacefully passed away surrounded by his children at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at the age of 94 years.

Jack was born on August 13, 1923 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He attended elementary and high schools there and at age 17 enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force. The next four years were spent training, first as an Air Mechanic and then as an Air Crew Flight Engineer. Following his years of service, Jack worked for a brief while with the Canadian Pacific Railway which brought him to Lethbridge where he met his future wife Beatrice May Livingstone.

Initially working for Wheelers Jewellers, Jack eventually established his own store – Foster’s Jewellery, later to become Foster and Sons Jewellers. A man with a dedicated work ethic, he devoted his professional years to building the reputation of the store as a destination for premier jewellery and superior customer service. As a result, generations of customers returned time and again to purchase engagement rings, wedding rings and watches. Customers often asked to “speak with Jack” – he was recognized as a man of his word and these regulars often became lifelong friends.

Jack was a Lethbridge man at heart and his civic mindedness led him to join the Masons, the Shriners and the Rotary Club. He was actively involved in the Downtown Business Association and served for a period of time for both the Police Commission and Southminster United Church. Jack retired from business in 1983 and his son Neil and grandson David proudly continue the Foster family legacy at the downtown store.

During their golden years Jack and Bea enjoyed many happy summers at their Rosen Lake, BC cabin. Not too long after, they became snowbirds, living in Arizona in the winters and enjoying summers in the Kootenays.

After Bea’s passing in 2009, Jack enjoyed summers and holidays at Susie’s cottage and Sunday dinner at Peggy’s family home.

In essence Jack was very much a family man. He loved his dear Bea (Precious), had a special way with newborn babies and enjoyed being surrounded by his large family of kids, grandkids and in recent years great grandkids. He was always up for a chat, and ever the jokester, upon reading the daily obituaries he would ask — “Am I in there yet?” Well, sadly Dad, after 94 years, today you are.

We love you dearly and will miss you forever.
