FORSYTH

ELNA JEAN FORSYTH finished her mortal journey on September 14, 2017 and joined her sweetheart Garth, who predeceased her on February18, 2016. Jean was a country girl who loved the sunshine and the soil. Her love for flowers showed in her gardens and well kept yard.

Jean was born to William David and Elna (Bohne) Campbell on Sept 16, 1930 in Cardston, Alberta. She spent her growing up years in Hillspring, Alberta where she made many happy memories camping in the mountains, picking berries, fishing, and enjoying nature. Her love for the outdoors was later manifest in her paintings, with Old Chief mountain being her favourite subject.

Jean worked as cook at the Rothe ranch in the summer of 1948 where she met her handsome cowboy, Garth Dean Forsyth son of Neil Snow and Chloe Roseltha (Hatch) Forsyth. Garth and Jean were married on October 14, 1948 in Hillspring. In 1951, on the ninth of January, they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Cardston Alberta Temple. They raised a large family with most of their married years spent in the Kimball valley where they enjoyed many friendships with families in the area. Jean was always busy gardening, bottling fruit, sewing clothes, tying quilts, and baking bread. Neighbours were blessed by her kind acts of service.

Garth and Jean served a mission at the Family History Center in Los Angeles California in 1993-1994. She also served in many church callings including positions of leadership in the Aetna Ward and the Blood Branch. She was a faithful visiting teacher and made her last visits the day before she passed away.

From a young age Jean loved being with children. She was considered a prime choice for a baby sitter in her younger years so it is no wonder that her children and grandchildren were her main focus and brought her much joy. They were always welcome to join her anytime at work or at play. When the family was together it was not unusual to hear Jean’s giggle as she watched the grandchildren play. Her large posterity have been blessed by her patient, kind, and cheerful example.

Jean is survived by her 10 children, Rex (Betty Lou); Gene (Debra Lyle); Randy (Kathy); Tim (Sherri); Linda (David) Ames; Shane (Sharon); Necia (Richard) Kittler; Scott (Teri); Becky (Kevin Penner); and Bonnie (Darcy) Erickson; her foster son Wilfred (Charlotte) Marks Sr.; 52 grandchildren, 141 great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. She is also survived by three brothers: Allen (Anna), Darrel (Edith) and Wendell (Debra) Campbell; and three sisters Ruth Barton, Flora Lee and Colleen Hummelle and sisters-in-law Nonavee Campbell and Glenda Campbell. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, her parents, three brothers: Walton (Phaedra), David, and Blaine Campbell; one sister: Annetta Lou Campbell; a brother-in-law: LaVerne Hummelle; a sister-in-law: Wendy Campbell; a daughter-in-law: Karyn Forsyth; two granddaughters: Tausha and Marie; and one great-grandson: Clayton.

The family expresses appreciation to all those whose kind words, visits, sincere regards, and reminiscing, cheered and lifted her recently. We also express gratitude to nurses and staff at the Chinook Lodge and at Lee Crest who took such good care of her this past year and a half.

Family will greet friends at the Legacy Funeral Home, on Thursday, September 21st from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. or at the church from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.

The Funeral service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Cardston Alberta West Stake Center, 846 1st Ave W, Cardston, Alberta on Friday, September 22nd, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.

ALSTON

ORSON DOUGLAS ALSTON (Feb. 11, 1928 – Sept. 15, 2017) passed away peacefully at home. Doug will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Janet (Turner); his children, Jody, Jim (Sandy; their children Kristen, Kayla, Jaclyn), Drew (Wendi; Andrew, Lauren, Nathan, Madison), Jackie (Kent Warnica; Lauren, Katie), Donna (Trent Taggart; Nathan, Jessica, Becky, Rachel, Kate) and, Jonathan (Jenny; Valerie, Garett, Ethan) and great-grandson Jared James. He is survived by his sister Hope Alston, brother Tyler (Gloria), sister-in-law Doreen Alston, his brother-in-law Lawrence (Norma) Turner and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Norma Alston, his sister Beulah Holst, brother Cal, nephews Burns and Kevin, and grandsons Jared, Kyle, and Isaac. Doug was born in Magrath and by all accounts, which there were many, had a glorious upbringing full of adventure and friendships. As a young man, he followed his mother’s urging to get a university education. He graduated from Utah State University with degrees in Political Science (BSc and MSc) and the University of Alberta in Education (BEd). After graduating, he began his career as a teacher in Southern Alberta. He taught social studies and eventually became the principal in Glenwood. In 1957, he married his high-school sweetheart, Janet. He remained grateful to the kind and good people of Glenwood who influenced his life in such a positive way. In 1962, the young family moved to Cardston where he taught and became principal of Cardston High School. In 1968, the family moved to Lethbridge when he was hired at the Lethbridge Junior College (Lethbridge College) as the Director of Liberal Arts (Dean of Natural and Social Sciences). He worked at the college for over twenty years during an exciting time in its history and was supportive mentor to many fine instructors and college employees. Doug was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as Bishop of the Lethbridge 4th ward and as a counsellor in the Lethbridge Stake Presidency. After retiring from the college, he was called to serve as President of the Nigeria Lagos Mission. Doug and Janet cherished their oft-challenging but rewarding time in Africa. When they returned, Doug and Janet loved serving as temple workers in Cardston. He also enjoyed teaching Gospel Doctrine classes and faithfully served in the church until his passing. Dad was a kind, gentle, compassionate man who saw and encouraged the best in people. His greatest happiness was his family and often told them he felt “blessed and highly favoured”. Dad wrote many letters over the years to his children always signing off with “Keep the Faith” and “Love One Another”. His physical presence will be greatly missed by all who loved him; however, his spiritual presence will remain within each of our hearts. His life of devotion and dedication will forever be an example to us. God be with us till we meet again. Family will greet friends and relatives at the Generations Funeral Home (703 -13-St-N.), on Thursday, September 21st from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. or at the church from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. DAVIDSON

Our mom, Agnes Colleen Davidson, passed away at her home, which is where she wanted to be, on September 16, 2017. We are grateful that she was separated from her first love, our father, Leo Lamar Davidson, for only a few months as he preceded her on June 28, 2017. Our sadness for her passing is more than made up for by their joyful and loving reunion along with many other family and friends. Agnes and Leo are survived by their five children: Julie Fairbanks (Brent) of Calgary, Alberta; Doug Davidson (Nellie) of Ashburn, Virginia; Jim Davidson (Marie) of Bellevue, Washington; Colleen Low of Arlington, Texas; and Mark Davidson (Karen) of Edmonton, Alberta. Agnes was born in Cardston on September 8, 1926 to Hugh Russel Sloan and Rhoda Leota Hinman. She was the eighth of twelve children. She has two surviving brothers: Hugh Sloan of Springville, Utah, and Butch (Wallace) Sloan of Cardston, Alberta. Growing up she and her siblings loved to ride horses and swim in the river at the bottom of the hill from their home. Her father and many brothers were very involved in boxing and inevitably she would go a few rounds with them, always holding her own. Her youth was highlighted by the opportunity to play with the Shooting Stars, a very successfull girls basketball team, which went to the Canadian Nationals, ultimately losing in the semi-finals to the eventual winners. In and around Cardston she met, courted and eventually married Leo. They lived in Cardston where Dad ran a hardware store and she worked in a bank. They would move to Edmonton for a new job, but eventually a transfer returned them to Lethbridge where they remained. In Lethbridge Agnes worked along side Leo selling real estate for several years; her success was surpassed by her honesty. In 1972 they moved from the city to a small acreage where stood the old Perry home, which had been abandoned. They worked hard restoring the home and making it a cherished refuge for family and friends, and it remains so today. Agnes loved her family, friends, and strangers; she was most happy serving and taking care of them in ways that were uniquely her. There was nothing that made her happier than to sit around the table and visit after enjoying a delicious meal she always made. She was an exceptional home-maker, it seemed there was nothing she could not make, mend, clean or clean again. Agnes had many opportunities to serve both in the church and in the community. Guided by a strong, clear internal sense of right and wrong – she was Irish – she served with great energy, conviction and love. Together their formal church service was highlighted by missions served in Durban/Reunion, South Africa, and Madagascar. Her love for, and faith in our Heavenly Father’s Plan of Happiness, and the atonement of Jesus Christ were sufficient to sustain her through this life and, we trust, carry her on to a joyous reunion with our Dad. The funeral service will be held Saturday, September 23 at 2:00 pm at the Fairmont Ward Chapel, 205 Fairmont Boulevard South, Lethbridge, Alberta. Prior to the service there will be a family greeting from 1:00 – 1:45 pm. Internment will take place at the Mountain View cemetery with a family dinner to follow.

Interment will take place at the Mountain View cemetery with a family dinner to follow.

Dale Farnsworth
1929 – 2017
It is with deep sadness that the family of Dale Byron Farnsworth, announce the passing of our father, grandfather and great grandfather, at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at the age 88 years, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s.
Dad leaves to mourn his passing two sons Clay (Joe-Anne) Farnsworth of Vauxhall and their children Stacey (Mike) Morcom (their son Connor) and Lindsey Farnsworth (her children Callie and Daxon) all of Lethbridge; Todd (Rosanne) Farnsworth of Pennant, Saskatchewan and their children Amanda, Jennifer and Ty. Also, to mourn are his sisters Eveline Bell and Adelaide (Lyle) Nygard; brother Roy (Norma) Farnsworth; sisters-in-law Billie Dickie and Clara Dickie and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dad was predeceased by his wife of fifty three years, Lavina, father Byron, mother Helen, two sisters, seven brothers, five sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Dad was born August 4, 1929 in the family home in Pennant Saskatchewan, number eleven in the blended family of thirteen known as the Dickie-Farnsworth family. He was raised around horses as his father had the livery barn and dray line in Pennant. Dale loved to ride and had many horses over the years, as he always spoke of Beauty and her foal Babe. His first job was as a teamster at the Swift Current Research Station in Swift Current, where he became a heavy equipment operator. Dale later worked on the original St Mary’s dam in southern Alberta with brother Joe. Dad then went on to become a finish operator working on Highway #1 near Cluny, Vancouver Airport and several dams in British Columbia to name just a few areas. He came home to Pennant to start farming where he met Lavina Schmiess of Stewart Valley. They married in December 1954 and started their family in Pennant.
Dad sold the farm in Pennant to start a new adventure in Alberta, however the family returned to Pennant in 1966 to buy the local John Deere dealership. Many will remember Dad behind the counters at John Deere and later Morris Rod Weeder, both in Pennant and in Swift Current. Dad started farming again full-time in 1979 after leaving the business world and continued to farm until his retirement.
Dale was part of a huge musical family and many would have danced to the Pennant Orchestra. He was a talented self-taught guitarist, singer and yodeler. Many family gatherings were spent around his guitar with his strong voice leading the way. Dad’s love for music was passed down in his family, as many are accomplished musicians.
Dad’s love of horses saw him volunteer as ringmaster at the Quarter Horse show in Swift Current for many years. He also served on the board with the Pioneer Credit Union for many years.
Dad was a hard worker all of his life and instilled that work ethic in all who knew him. He also had a great sense of humor and was quick with a line. Dale loved the prairies and to talk about his many work adventures during his life. In his last few years he loved seeing his great grandchildren and was happy to have lived to see that.
In his later years, as the Alzheimer’s was causing concerns, he moved to Vauxhall to be closer to family to help with that transition. Here he made many new friends having fun at dances and making people laugh at the Manor. In the end, however it was a battle too hard to over come.
Dale will be privately remembered by his family and friends. Condolences may be forwarded by visiting our website at http://www.southlandfuneral.com.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Dale’s name may be made directly to the Alzheimer’s Society, #40, 1202 – 2 Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 0E3 or to The Good Samaritan Society, Linden View, 4700 – 64 Avenue, Taber, Alberta T1G 0C6.
Arrangements in care of Southland Funeral Chapel, Taber. Telephone: (403) 223-8778.

Hurley Price
1920 – 2017
Hurley Valentine Price, beloved husband of Margaret Price (nee McMillan), passed away on Friday, September 15, 2017 at the age of 97, just two months shy of their 75th wedding anniversary.
Hurley was born to Charles and Marcella Price at home on the south side of Taber. He is survived by his wife Margaret, one daughter Rosanne Horrocks; two grandsons  Lee (Jody) Reid and their children Torey, Carsen and Madi;  Blair Horrocks and his children Brett and Alyssa; two nieces Mary (Jim) Stewart and  Ann Fulton.
He was predeceased by his parents Marcella and Charles Price; sisters Devota (Buddy) (Joe) Godfrey and Rose (Larry) Coombes; nephew Jerry Godfrey and his son-in-law Reid Horrocks.
Hurley was a very religious man but kept his faith private. At a young age, Hurley would attend all the square dances with his parents, calling all the reels and square dances while sitting on top of the piano. At fifteen his dad was disabled so Hurley would mine coal out of the mines using a wash tub, loading it in a wagon, taking it home for his family, then sold or traded the rest for food or goods. He met Margaret when he was six, but at age sixteen he went to a dance in Grassy Lake where he met the love of his life for the second time. After that meeting, he rode his horse from Taber to the McMillan farm south Purple Springs to court Margaret. In 1942 they exchanged vows in the newly built Catholic Church under the direction of Father Lyons. There first job together was for Albert and Dolly Bullock, where he learned to drive truck and haul anything. Hurley often talked about those times with the Bullock family. That was where he learned to drive so well as Mr. Bullock would cuff him in the back of the head if he ground gears. He took over the McMillan farm and farmed it for eight years. Hurley was drafted into the American Army, stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington in the Medical Corps 995 2nd TSU SGO for fourteen months, where he was ambulance and truck driver. He received his overseas orders three times, but each time was reordered state side. Hurley was honorably discharged August 31, 1946. Upon arriving home, he continued trucking making sixty one trips from Lethbridge to Detroit picking up cars and delivering them to cities around the United States and Canada. We often accompanied him on these trips that took about ten days. He purchased his own gravel truck, worked for the M.D, then bought a semi and hauled logs. Hurley hauled for Chinook Carriers on the beet haul, in the off season he would haul sugar north and honey back. Balmoral holdings hauled for many companies … whiskey for Mercury Truck Lines, Bitterroot Transport, Kleysen Transport and H&R Transport. On the weekends when he was home we were camping, going to rodeos, hunting and attending  grandchildrens hockey and baseball games. The Minister of Lands and Forest came each year to hunt with us and gave him a knife that was inscribed “Mr. Antelope”. In 1967 he bought acreage north of town and later purchased the Kaytor farm at Sherburne lake which he sold to his son-in-law Reid Horrocks. He and Margaret retired and spent time travelling up north to see his sister and to the United States on many other trips. In 2014 they moved to Clearview Lodge, where he enjoyed the staff and his card playing friends. In July his health took him to the Continuing Care unit where he spent his final days.
Hurley will be laid to rest in the columbarium at the Taber Memorial Garden, beside his son-in-law Reid. Condolences may be forwarded by visiting our website at http://www.southlandfuneral.com.
We would like to thank the staff at Clearview Lodge, the Taber Hospital Active Care and Continuing Care as well as Dr. Rasmussen for all the great care and concern Hurley received.

ENTZ

REVEREND PETER J. ENTZ, beloved husband of the late Katie Entz, of the Crystal Spring Hutterian Brethren in Magrath, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at the age of 87 years.

At the time of his passing, Peter was the Bishop of the Lehrerleut Conference of the Hutterian Brethren Church, a position he held for 13 years. Peter had been a Minister in the Hutterian Brethren Church for 46 years.

Peter was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He performed his duties as Minister and Bishop in exemplary Hutterite fashion: with humility, dignity and grace at all times. He was a leader who served the Church and the Hutterite community in a truly unselfish manner and his guidance and leadership will be dearly missed. Peter always gave respect to those who had the privilege to meet him and that respect was returned many times over with his extraordinary character. He was a constant reminder that you can have a huge impact even when you speak softly and calmly. Anyone who had the honour of dealing with Peter was left a better person for it. Lehrerleut means “People of the Teacher” and Peter exemplified this as he was a natural teacher who willingly shared his knowledge, convictions and hope.

Peter’s faith and leadership strengthened his community – people who have joined together to enjoy all things common, being all of one mind, heart and soul, according to the ways of those whom men call Hutterians.

Ruth Reynar April 18, 1926-September 25, 2017

Ruth passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on Monday September 25, 2017 at the Chinook Regional Hospital. She received excellent care and attention from the doctor and nurses on 4C during her brief stay in the hospital. Ruth was born in Calgary and was of Swedish descent. She and her parents lived in different parts of Alberta with significant time spent homesteading in the Barrhead region when Ruth was a child. Ruth graduated from the Calgary General Hospital nursing program in 1947; being a nurse was something that made her very proud. After some hospital-based nursing, she became a District Nurse in the Foremost area. It was there Ruth met medical student John (Jack) Reynar home for the summer vacation. They married in 1951 and had two children, Karin Lee and Marlys Joan. They lived on a small farm in Brooks for many years with Ruth taking care of much of the yard work and growing beautiful flower and vegetable gardens every year. In 1974, Ruth and Jack moved to Lethbridge. Ruth worked as an occupational nurse for Woodward’s for a number of years as well as volunteering for the Helen Schuler Nature Centre, the Galt Museum and the Revelers. She loved sewing and was part of the Sewing Guild of Lethbridge for many years. Ruth was an excellent cook and loved entertaining; she put on an annual Lucia Day brunch with lots of great food and glogg. She loved flowers of all kinds and always had a flower garden as well as flowers in the house whenever possible. Ruth and her husband did extensive traveling over the years and she enjoyed recounting the many interesting and exotic places they visited; the last big trip being a month-long ‘around the world’ trip in 2004. Ruth was predeceased by her daughter Karin Lee, her parents and her husband, Jack, as well as many other family members and friends. Her little dog Sasha, whom she loved deeply, also passed away recently. Ruth is survived by her daughter Marlys and many friends who loved and appreciated her very much. CALDWELL

AMBER DAWN CALDWELL, loving daughter, sister, aunt and friend passed away suddenly and returned to her Heavenly Father on September 24, 2017.

Amber was born on November 17, 1981 in Bow Island AB. She was a beautiful and happy red headed baby and her older siblings always doted on her. Being the youngest girl in a house full of boys, she learned at an early age to be tough. She was full of courage and had no trouble getting after her siblings. She had determination and fire and lived life to the fullest. Amber attended school in Bow Island until Grade 9 after which she then moved with her family to Fort Macleod. Amber graduated from high school at FP Walsh in Ft. Macleod in 2000.

Amber had many talents that gave her the opportunity to have many varied and interesting experiences throughout her life. She worked at a deli, a glass shop, she cooked and cleaned in work camps, she traveled throughout Canada building grain bins. Amber even had the rare opportunity to work in a carnival. After she moved to Lethbridge she began working with disabled clients helping them in their homes this was an excellent fit for Amber because of her great capacity for love.

Amber loved quilting, astrology and animals, especially cats, wolves and butterflies. Amber had a beautiful voice and loved sharing her talent of singing with her friends and family. She also loved babies and could always be found cuddling and singing to them.

Amber was a loyal and loving friend. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for the people in her life. She was generous and kind and loved by all who knew and associated with her.

She had an amazing capacity to love and was a great example of unconditional love.

Amber went by many different nicknames throughout her lifetime. Each of them describes the beautiful and unique individual that she was.

Boo Boo was her favorite. She was the auntie that nieces and nephews loved and adored. She only had to walk into a room and dozens of kids would flock to her arms for their turn at a Boo Boo hug. The kids knew if mom and dad said no Boo Boo would say Yes!

Amber’s capacity and generous love was not just given to her family but to all those she became friends with. Amber was an auntie and mother to many through the friendships she developed. She loved kids and they loved her.

Butterflies to Amber were a symbol of freedom and beauty, her love of Butterflies earned her the nickname Butterfly, it became a part of who she was. She was beautiful inside and out. She was strong willed and knew her own mind. Despite her struggles her heart and spirit remained golden.

Amber was loved and adored by all who knew her and she will be greatly missed. Amber is survived and loved by her parents Louis and Glenna Caldwell, siblings, Kirk (Gayle) Caldwell, Candice (Dexter) Durfey, Clint (Ginger) Caldwell, Jared (Carolyn) Caldwell, Abe (Lana) Caldwell and Josh (Amber) Caldwell and numerous nieces and nephews.

Van E. Christou

1926 – 2017

Van Evangelos Christou passed away peacefully on September 27, 2017 at the age of 91 years having led a full and enchanted life. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Helen; brother George; and his son Chris. He is survived by his sister Cathie (Ralph, deceased) Thrall; brother Bill; sons Philip (Florian Beigel) and Michael (Dianne Kambeitz); daughter Sandra (Geoff, deceased) England; daughter in law Alison Christou; granddaughters, Elizabeth, Mary, Barbara, Emily, Eleni and Frankie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Van was born in Lethbridge Alberta, on January 24, 1926, the second son of Chris and Anastasia, who immigrated from Greece. He was raised in Lethbridge as part of its vibrant Greek community. Through the Canadian Army Officer Training Corps, he attended the University of Alberta, graduating in 1948 with a Doctorate of Dentistry and a Queen’s Commission at the rank of Captain. On a Canadian Eastman Fellowship, he completed postgraduate training in Orthodontics at the University of Rochester from 1948-50. He returned to Lethbridge initially to practice general dentistry with Dr. JS Stewart, later establishing his own Orthodontics practice of 37 years.

His marriage to Helen Afaganis in 1952 was one of great love and mutual respect. Helen’s influence on Van’s life cannot be overstated: her compassion and elegant beauty complimented every aspect of Van’s life, even after her death in 2001. They raised a family of four children in an atmosphere of creativity, curiosity and adventure. Their home was always a warm, welcoming meeting place for friends, family and visitors from afar.

Van saw beauty around him and expressed it through many forms of art. He would be seen early mornings, camera in hand, marveling at the day’s new sunrise over Henderson Lake, or wandering through Nika Yuko Japanese gardens capturing its exquisite beauty. He believed that active involvement in any creative process provides one with the confidence to imagine and realize a more humane world.

Van actively engaged in civic affairs with imagination and wisdom. His vision for accessible liberal arts education was realized in 1967 with the establishment of the University of Lethbridge. He had a mind full of ideas, many of which came to fruition through the sixty years he spent engaged with community affairs. His passion for the arts shaped the character of Lethbridge in many ways including the establishment of the Allied Arts Council, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, the Yates Centre, and the University art collection. His enthusiasm was palpable, his energy unremitting, and his contributions leave this community considerably enhanced

Van was recently honoured by the Blackfoot Nation, who named him “iihhiowdoomoo” (Lead Buffalo). He deeply respected the values of the Blackfoot Nation and took great pride in this honour. His enthusiastic passion for life continues to inspire and he will be greatly missed.

Theodore “Theo” Pecht

1946 – 2017

Mr. Theodore “Theo” Pecht of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Mrs. Bev Pecht, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at the age of 71 years.

Always the life of the party.

The man loved a good time;

Dancing, drinking, golfing,

Working out, swimming,

Biking, sports, nuf said.

His smile.

He was hard, analytical, soft, although he rather not show it.

He loved giving a good lecture.

Dad was a good provider. His family was given many great experiences, he always sought opportunities to teach us life lessons and to NOT touch the damn fire.

Dad was a proud man, loved firefighting, loved his heritage and loved, loved, loved, sports.

He easily talked to people, people we had no idea who they were. He would sing and then laugh, sing some more, knowing full well he did not know the words, which of course made us laugh even harder.

Dad was wise and confident and made his children believe there was nothing we could not accomplish.

He loved his Yuma family

Dad was transparent, wore his emotions on his sleeve and we always knew what was on his mind.

His grandchildren were deeply loved, worried about and he stepped in when help was dearly needed.

Wherever he is, he is driving that diesel truck watching hockey and saying, “No decision is a bad decision”.

He will be lovingly missed by his beloved wife, Bev, of 50 years; daughter Suzanne and her children Julian and Sydney; daughter, Theresa (Dean) and their children Wyatt and Jaylon; son, Jason (Janay) and their children Maya and Griffin; sisters Cobi (Bill) and Thea (Louie); brother, Frits; and good friends Leith & Ted.

At Dads request, there will be no Funeral Service. A Memorial Service will be held from 2:00pm – 6:00pm, Friday, October 20, 2017 at the ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION, 324 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB., T1J 3L7.

Jean Cameron Vallance

1926 – 2017

Jean C. Vallance passed away on September 27, 2017 at the age of 91.

Jean was born in Calgary on February 26th, 1926. She graduated from the Calgary General Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1947.

In 1949 she married her High School sweetheart Peter S. Vallance, who practised Law in Calgary until his retirement in 1988.

Jean & Peter bought their beautiful 5.5-acre parcel of land on Lake Windermere in 1953, on which they built the family cabin. Upon Peter’s retirement, they lived full-time on the property they loved so much, in a home that replaced the cottage. They didn’t exactly slow down; they operated a business known as “Classy Crafts”, selling jams & jellies made with the berries they picked, plus other lovely hand-made goods.

Jean loved music and flowers and the great outdoors. She travelled the world with Peter, but her heart was in the canoe trips they took on wild northern rivers, the cross-country skiing throughout the Banff-Windermere area, camping, and just enjoying the mountains.

Jean was a fiercely independent woman; she lived by herself on the Lake in contented solitude for many years after Peter departed, despite being legally-blind and suffering many physical ailments. It was only this last May that she moved to Lethbridge to her own suite, to be closer to family. It was on the day that she had faced giving up her independence, moving to a care facility, when she moved on to her next adventure.

Jean was predeceased by her beloved husband Peter in 2008 and son David this last January.

Jean is survived by her son Bruce (Myrna), daughter Barbara (Larry), eight grandchildren: Meghan (Derek), Matthew (Nicole), Patrick (Anne), Annie (Erik), Peter (Elise), David (Alisha), Sampson & Kallie (Wallie), and nine great-grandchildren: Auburn, Sytiera, Meadow, Hunter, Evie, Elise, Stella, Magnus & Oliver.

At Jean’s request, there will be no formal service.

BIKMAN May 28, 1920 – September 29, 2017

Erma (Rasmussen) Bikman died peacefully in her sleep, September 29, 2017. She had dementia for the past few years, but never lost her cheerful spirit and grateful nature. She was born on the family farm southwest of Raymond, on May 28, 1920, the 3rd of 5 daughters and 5th child of George Rasmussen and Edna McBride Rasmussen. She had two older brothers. She was predeceased by all of them, as well as her beloved husband of nearly 75 years, Bill Bikman, and their precious daughter, Debra Edna Bikman Bird and daughter-in-law, Suzy. Left to mourn her passing and celebrate a life well lived, are her sons, Gary and Shane; Gary’s wife, Sheila; son-in-law, Craig Bird; 31 grandchildren and 71 great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Erma was a hard worker and while growing up, did her share on the family farm, including milking cows, herding them on horseback, tending the large garden and helping to clean and care for their home. She was a good student and excelled at math. Her love of numbers led her to study accounting at the LDS Business College in Salt Lake City. Upon returning to southern Alberta, Erma worked as a bookkeeper at a local service station and later for Claude Bolton’s accounting firm. It was while working at the service station that she met the man who’d become her husband and eternal companion. They married for time, in Medicine Hat on November 7th, 1942, while Bill was serving in the Canadian Air Force stationed there. (In October 1980, they were sealed for all eternity in the Cardston Temple) Erma was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many leadership and teaching positions. Her example and encouragement helped her children follow in her footsteps. “She taught us how to pray and develop a personal relationship with God” was the praise and credit her children, Gary, Debra & Shane often gave. Erma was very social and enjoyed the company of others. She also liked bowling and golf. The latter became a lifelong passion. It was part of the motivation for her to convince Bill to buy a winter home in Palm Springs where she could golf 4 or 5 times a week. And she was good. She didn’t hit a long ball but it was always straight down the middle. One of her sayings was, “Drive for show, putt for dough.” She usually made a few bucks from the “girls” she golfed with. Erma was a meticulous housekeeper and terrific cook, as anyone who’s eaten her butter tarts or boiled raisin cookies can attest. She even learned to make one of her husband’s favorite Jewish dishes, Kasha. It became a regular part of their delicious roast beef dinners. Erma was very entrepreneurial. She opened what may well have been the first women’s fitness center in Lethbridge. She went on to help several friends in other cities do the same. She also started and owned Carousel Knitting. It was here that she became very well known for her knitting classes and the fashion shows she staged at the Yates Center. Erma’s models were her lovely customers wearing the attractive dresses and outfits she’d helped them create. Her beautiful teenage daughter, Debra, also an accomplished knitter, was her favorite model. Erma’s proudest accomplishment and title was as a beloved “Babba.” She showered her grandchildren and great grandchildren with love, affection, encouragement…and lots of hand knit sweaters and outfits. They cherished her attention and appreciated all the life lessons she shared. She missed Bill. The 22 days since his passing is the longest they were ever apart during nearly 75 years of marriage. It’s a testament to the strength of their love that she has now gone to be with him. We suspect Bill may have appeared to her in a dream and promised he’d booked a tee time on a heavenly course for September 30th. Once again, we express deep appreciation for the kind care and loving service provided Erma by the staff at St. Therese Villa. They went above and beyond for her, especially since the death of her husband 3 weeks ago. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 7th, 2017 at 10:00 AM at the CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS – STIRLING CHAPEL, 413 3 St, Stirling, AB, Bishop Jim Seely will preside. Friends may meet the family prior to the service at 9:00 AM until 9:45 AM. Interment will follow the service in the Bikman section of the Stirling Cemetery. NICKLE

It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our mom, ISABELLE (MICKIE) NICKLE, nee Harrison, of Victoria, BC on July 15, 2017 at the age of 88 years.

Mom was born to the late Thomas and Isabella (Urwin) Harrison, July 13, 1929 in Canmore Alberta. She and her parents then moved to Lethbridge, where she attended school and began her working life. She married the late Henry James (Harry) Burris and was a loving mother to Roberta Burris (Jim Gabert), Jane Allan (Bruce), Tim Burris (Nancy Griffin), Michael Burris (Anita Cocchia), Mary-Kate Mitchell, Lorena Masnyk (Dan) and Erin Burris. Mom was also a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother to Rob Allan (Trisha, daughter Hailee and son Brayden), Jeff Gabert, Kevin Burris (Sarah), Carrie Dunlop (Christian Schulz), Isabelle Burris, Marissa Ennis (Colin and daughters Sophia and Scarlet), Lorena Soukeroff (and son Adam), Sean Burris, Katie Dunlop, Cody Soukeroff, Justin Masnyk, Nico Burris-Cocchia and Tina Burris-Cocchia. She was also a loving aunt to numerous nieces and nephews.

Isabelle was predeceased by her parents, Tom and Isabella; her siblings, Jane (Jean), Marjorie (Madge), Florence (Flo), Elizabeth (Mabel) and George; as well as husbands Harry Burris, John (Buck) Nickle and Colin Preece.

Throughout her life, Mickie applied her skills at numerous companies in Lethbridge but is most remembered for her many years of service at St. Michael’s Hospital. She worked in the dietary department as a night cook, breakfast cook, baker and dietician and made many close friends over her years there. She will be remembered by those she worked with as fun-loving, hard-working and kind.In July 1985, Mickie married Buck Nickle. She retired from St. Michael’s on July 31, 1989, and moved with Buck to Mill Bay, BC that year and then to Chilliwack in 1994. She and Buck spent many happy years on the coast together until his passing.

In 2005, she married Colin Preece and lived with him in Duncan, BC and later in Victoria. Mom and Colin embarked on a series of trips to Alaska, California, Ontario and the Maritimes. Always up for adventure, she tried parasailing for the first time at 78 on her first trip to Mexico and always said she wanted to do it again.

Mom will always be remembered by her entire family as a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, a music lover, a crackerjack crib player, and a cook/baker extraordinaire. Her cabbage rolls, fried chicken, sugar cookies, ginger snaps and butter horns were just a few of our favorites and staples at every family gathering. She raised all her children with love, patience and the occasional wielding of a wooden spoon (threatened but never used). Her witty and often salty idioms will be forever remembered and repeated with great amusement. Isabelle will be forever missed and forever loved by her family and by the many people she touched through the years with her kindness and generosity.

A Celebration of Life Service for Isabelle will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Erin Phillips officiating.

William J. Pollock

1927 – 2017

Mr. William J. Pollock of Lethbridge, beloved companion of Rohanni de Leeuw, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Sunday, October 1, 2017 at the age of 90 years.

Psalm 23 The lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me besides the still waters. He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Bill was a very nice and very kind loving person to me for twenty years. I am glad that he is up in heaven where he has a better life to live without any pain or suffering. Even though I do miss him lots I do know that he is in a far better place than down here on earth and someday I will see him again.

In keeping with Bill’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service held.
