ALGIRDAS “AL” ARELIS

ALGIRDAS “AL” ARELIS of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of the late Lorene Arelis, passed away on August 9, 2017 at the age of 88 years. Al leaves to cherish his memory three daughters, Wendy Arelis, Deanna Arelis (Tom McLeay), and Cheryl Arelis (David Carpenter). He is also survived by his sister, Alduté Kozeniauskas, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Al was predeceased by his father, Liudvikas Arelis, mother Ona Rojus, step-father Petras Rojus, brothers Vytautas and Romualdas, and sister Juraté Smith.

Born in Lithuania, Al and his family emigrated to Canada in 1948 after surviving many hardships during World War II. They settled in Lethbridge, where Al met and married the love of his life, Lorene (née Morgan) and where their daughters were born. With Lorene’s help and his steely determination, both Al’s English and his career prospects in retail sales steadily improved. He accepted a managerial position in Medicine Hat, where Al moved the family and became involved in recreation, military, education, and community service.

A natural athlete, Al excelled at every sport including tennis, soccer, and figure skating, but the game he loved best was definitely golf, which he took up later in life and continued to play and enjoy well into his 80s. Al especially loved the camaraderie shared amongst his golf buddies, and had great times with them every week as well as on several California golf trips.

Al had wonderful memories of his homeland, but was first and foremost a proud Canadian, choosing to have inscribed on his headstone: “Lithuanian by birth; Canadian by choice”. Al served his country of choice by first joining the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1953, then the South Alberta Light Horse in 1955, where he excelled and moved quickly through the ranks. He retired in 1974 as CWO while serving as RSM. In 1967, Al was honoured to receive the Regimental Guidon from Princess Alexandra during Canada’s centennial year. He was also awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration and Bar, the Canadian Centennial Medal, the Alberta Centennial Medal, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

A true lifelong learner, Al welcomed every opportunity to further his education, including working part-time for a year in 1967 to study Business Science at the Medicine Hat College. Al felt the most important thing he could do for his children was to instill in them his own love of learning, which lives on and inspires his family’s younger generations.

A strong advocate of community service, Al was a member of several local service clubs and volunteer committees, including serving on the Medicine Hat College Foundation Board of Directors from 1995-2006, acting as Chair for seven of those years. In 2004, Al was named Medicine Hat College Alumnus of the Year, in recognition of his volunteerism and family’s generous financial contributions to MHC.

Above all else, Al was devoted to and proud of his family. He took great interest in all family members’ accomplishments and could always be counted on to sing their praises to anyone who would listen! We love and miss him deeply.

The funeral service will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, #1 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. Interment will take at Mountain View Cemetery in Lethbridge on Sunday, August 27, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Memorial gifts in Al’s name may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 340A Maple Avenue SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 7L5, to Parkinson Alberta, #101, 928 Allowance Avenue SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 3G7 or to the South Alberta Light Horse Regimental Association, c/o Patterson Armoury, 120 Cuyler Road SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1B 3M4. GIBB

LAWRENCE LAMAR GIBB was born July 13, 1922 in Hill Spring, Alberta and passed away peacefully at 95 years of age on August 20, 2017 at the Lee Crest Nursing home in Cardston. Upon passing, he was reunited with his parents George and Ellen Gibb, 8 siblings and 2 grandsons. He was the last surviving member in his family.

He leaves behind his ever devoted eternal companion of 68 years Hazel Fae (Beazer) and 8 children; Marjorie (Robb) Wolff, Rhonda (Dick) Williams, Larry (Connie) Gibb, Robert (Kathy) Gibb, Colette (Rob) Burnham, John (Patty) Gibb, Ramona Weidner and Darryl (Rena) Gibb.

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Lawrence served in many capacities. As a young man he served a mission in Australia. Lawrence and Hazel served missions in India, New Jersey and Salt Lake City.

Those who knew Lawrence recognized his quiet strength, unquestionable integrity and steadfast faith.

He spent most of his life farming in Hill Spring. First under the tutelage of his father, as a partner with his brother DeVere then as mentor to his son Larry.

Lawrence truly loved farming. He loved the land, preparing the soil, planting, irrigating, nourishing and eventually the reward of the harvest. He would repeat this year after year in a field of several hundred acres, a large garden or small planter box.

“The crop” that brought him the greatest joy was his family which included Hazel, 8 children and their spouses whom he loved as his own, 35 grandchildren and 87 great grandchildren.

In farming and in life, Lawrence firmly believed that “whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap”. As his growing season has come to an end he will again realize that “The harvest truly is plenteous”.

Hazel and family wish to express gratitude to the staff who provided home care and the staff at the Cardston Hospital and Lee Crest Nursing Home for their kind and compassionate care.

In Loving Memory –

Mother / Aunt / Nanny / Friend

“Of all the gifts that life has to offer, a loving mother is the greatest of them all.”

Marian passed away in Calgary after she experienced a serious decline in her health over the last several months.

Left to mourn her are her daughters, Loretta (Andy) Del Mul, Sherri (Darry) Midtdal, Dawn (Mike) Peta; Grandchildren, Christina, Cassandra, Lauren, and Alana Del Mul; Ryan and Cole Midtdal; Jasmin (Bryce) Chernecki and Jared Gaehring; Conner, Luke and Ashlyn Peta; Great-Grandson Kaden Del-Mul Smallhorn and Great- Granddaughter Elise Chernecki. Marian was born in Windsor, Ontario, and was the youngest of four daughters. In 1974, she moved west to Alberta with her young family and chose to spend the remainder of her life here close to the mountains. Mom (Nanny) did her very best to be all that she needed to be for her family and we are eternally grateful that she shared that spirit with us for as long as she was able. We know that she is finally at peace and unburdened by the weight of the physical and mental challenges that she faced in life. Our lives are richer for having had her in it.

We would also like to acknowledge the Letkemann family for helping her along the way in her journey, with special recognition to Peter, Katy (deceased), Paul, Lorraine and Lillian. They welcomed her with open arms and loved her as their own. We’d also like to express our gratitude to our extended family in Windsor, particularly her nieces and nephews, who made a point to stay in touch and provide love and support as needed.

A Celebration of Marian’s Life will be held at Galt Museums and Archives (502, 1st Street South, Lethbridge, AB) on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through http://www.mcinnisandholloway.com. PHILIP HENRY BOON

July 16th, 1920 – August 31st, 2017

A Life Well Lived:

PHIL BOON was born July 16, 1920 in Liverpool, England: the youngest child and the only son of his parents Henry and Caroline Boon. He left school at the age of 14 years (as was common in those days) and was apprenticed as a Printer. Phil went on to serve in the British Army Engineer Corps during World War II where he spent 6 years in Egypt excelling at many engineering projects. At the end of the war he married his first wife, Joyce, on December 25th, 1945.

In March of 1957, our Dad packed up his young family and immigrated to Canada arriving in Lethbridge, on his way to Vancouver. But he never left – he loved Lethbridge. Dad was initially employed as foreman of Robin’s Printing but went on to propose, create and manage the University of Lethbridge Printing Department. He became a valued and respected member of the Lethbridge community: participating in many productions with Lethbridge Musical Theatre (his favourite being Fiddler on the Roof), singing with the University Singers, Vox Musica and the Lethbridge Barber Shop Singers. He was a volunteer with Big Brothers, Meals on Wheels and a member of the Lethbridge Senior Centre.

Dad’s passions were music and wood/ metal work. His workshop was his pride and joy. In that workshop he created many, many beautiful projects from hobby horses to doll houses, go carts to lazy susans, cedar chests to glider rockers, kayaks, and his famous pendulum clocks. His credo was “I too did something make and rejoiced in the making”. And he did!

Dad loved the outdoors – fly fishing, hiking, boating, kayaking and camping. He came to really enjoy travelling and he was fortune enough to travel to many places throughout the world with his second wife, Mary.

Dad is predeceased by his first wife, Joyce (1979) and his sister Eda Brown (2001).

He is survived by his second wife Mary, his sons Alan Boon (Joyce) and Les Boon (Maureen), his daughters Julie-Mae Boon and Jeannie Walton (Tom) as well as Mary’s sons Rupert Allan (Karen) and Glenn Allan (Patti).

He also leaves behind 8 grandchildren (Byron, Jason, Christopher, Tanya, Matthew, Robyn, Kelley and Kathleen) and 10 great-grandchildren (Carey, Brandon, Jayden, Poppe, Soleil, Tyler, Nathan, Kade, Charlotte, and Feather).

Our Dad will be missed by many who have come to appreciate his friendship, his talents and his love. A special thank you is sent to the wonderfully caring staff at Columbia Assisted Living, Jacquie Whiffen of HomeCare and the nurses and doctors at Chinook Regional Hospital.

It is with heavy hearts that we say good-bye to Dad but it is comforting to know that he is at peace ….. following his life well lived.

A Graveside Service will be held at MOUNTAIN VIEW CEMETERY, Scenic Drive South, Lethbridge, on Wednesday, September 6th at 1:00 P.M. Please meet at main gate by 12:50. Following the graveside service, a time of fellowship & refreshments will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 – Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M.

MARUNO

March 22, 1928-August 31, 2017

Katoye “Kay” Maruno, daughter of Juro and Shizuka Tajiri was born in Mission, B.C. on March 22nd, 1928.

Our beloved Mother passed away on August 31, 2017, at the Chinook Regional Hospital. Her long journey with Alzheimer’s ended as she had wished, peacefully in her sleep.

Mom was a woman ahead of her time. She loved to work and though small in stature she could out work most everyone. As her Alzheimer’s progressed and her memories became dim, she would still recall with pride her working days in the strawberry, potato and sugar beet fields. In 1970, with the support of her brothers, she purchased Wendy’s Dairy Bar in Vauxhall. With a crew of six children still at home, she became a successful entrepreneur. She was born to be in the fast food business.

Her grace and courage in life came from the unconditional love she felt from her parents. Her happiness came from her children and grandchildren.

Mom leaves behind her most cherished friend Teiji “TJ” Nakamura and is survived by her loving family; Lois (Ron) Maloney, Susan (Brian) Van Uden, Larry, Annie (Robert) Janzen, Linda (David) McMillan, Janet (Larry) Lavallee, Lorraine (Gerald) Howlett, 15 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Tom (Chuck) Tajiri and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mom was predeceased by Dad in 1991, her parents and her brothers Kaz(Helen), Horsey and Nobby.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at St. Michael’s Health Centre, where she resided for the past three years.

There will be a viewing on Monday, September 4th from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. at the Buddhist Temple of Southern Alberta at 470 40 St S Lethbridge, Alberta. Funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. Koden and

Kenneth “Ken” Richard David

1936 – 2017

Mr. Kenneth “Ken” Richard David of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Mrs. Eunice David, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at Chinook Regional Hospital on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at the age of 81 years.

Besides his loving wife Eunice, Ken is survived by his daughters, Lori (Conrad) Westerson and Shelly David; son, Cameron (Tracie) David; grandchildren, Ryan (Toni), Shaun and Shaelin Westerson, Zoe David, Jason, Jamie and Johnathan David; sister Karen Kay; great grandchild, London Westerson; sisters-in-law, Elsie (Bill) Kaval, Percy Evans, Jackie Evans, Dorothy (Clyde) Matheson and Emilie (Joe, deceased) Saban; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Ken was predeceased by his father, John David, his mother, Elena Kay; father-in-law, Joseph Evans and mother-in-law, Dorothy Evans; brothers, John Saban and Joe Saban. Dad was born on July 13, 1936 to John David and Elena Kay. A lifelong resident of Lethbridge, Dad attended Central School, Hamilton Junior High and Lethbridge Collegiate Institute. Dad worked very hard at many jobs. He made oxygen at Linde Air and was in sales at Motor Car Supply. He went on to work for the Alberta Government in the Health of Animals department, but eventually returned to sales and management at Taylor Pearson & Carson, Acklands, Oliver Industrial Supply and Custom Engine & Parts. In the latter years, Dad alternated between “retirement” during golf season and vehicle sales in the off season. He proudly served customers at Beny Chevrolet Oldsmobile, Lethbridge Nissan, Import Auto and McFadden Honda. Dad enjoyed golfing, photography, fishing, bowling and curling. He could often be found going to the picture show at the local cinemas. Aside from golf, Dad’s most frequent activity was cheering on his children and grandchildren at their athletic and artistic events. His encouraging voice and thunderous applause rang out at soccer pitches, hockey rinks, gymnasiums and theatres across our country. Dad was also an avid reader, a trait he was proud to have passed down the family line. An ardent hockey fan, Dad was a season ticket holder of the Lethbridge Broncos and a shareholder/season ticket holder of the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Until a decline in mobility made navigation of the stairs impossible, Dad and Mom occupied the same seats for every Bronco and Hurricane home game held in the Enmax Centre (Sportsplex). Those seats are still owned by the family and Dad will be happy to know that Mom will be returning to sit there this year. Dad LOVED to sing and in his youth won a number of awards in the Kiwanis Music festival. As an adult, Dad’s main interest was golf and he won many league championships and golf tournaments. A member of the Lethbridge Country Club since 1961, Dad was also a registered Data Specialist with Skate Canada and a member of the Lethbridge Senior Citizen’s Organization. He was an active volunteer in the LSCO kitchen and for the Lethbridge Figure Skating Club Our dad was a singer, loud and proud. He knew many songs but was especially known for his unique, high decibel version of Happy Birthday. Friends, family and anyone lucky enough to be at our mother’s place of employment would receive an annual reminder of this. Dad also excelled at telling stories and jokes and could be the life of any party. Dad loved to drive so the family enjoyed many car trips and camping trips. He could maneuver the trailer into the tightest campsites imaginable. He particularly enjoyed a holiday with Mom, driving the Oregon Coast, and a 2008 trip to Jamaica with his son, Cameron. Dad recently celebrated his 58th wedding anniversary with the love of his life (Dad’s words). Proud and protective, Dad/Grandpa fiercely loved his family. In return, Papa was loved.

Besides his loving wife Eunice, Ken is survived by his daughters, Lori (Conrad) Westerson and Shelly David; son, Cameron (Tracie) David; grandchildren, Ryan (Toni), Shaun and Shaelin Westerson, Zoe David, Jason, Jamie and Johnathan David; great grandchild, London Westerson; sister Karen Kay; brothers and sisters-in-law, Elsie (Bill) Kaval, Percy Evans, Jackie Evans, Dorothy (Clyde) Matheson and Emilie (Joe, deceased) Saban; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at ST. AUGUSTINE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 411 – 11 Street South, Lethbridge, AB., with Canon Allan McCuaig officiating. Emily was an amazing, hard working woman; generous and with a kind soul, who loved to cook for family and friends. Her Hungarian desserts were greatly anticipated by all. Her grandsons awaited each Christmas for her to make “nagymama soup”. She was known for her artistic ways. She won many awards for her needle point at the County Fair. Nothing touched your heart more than when you saw her smile while laughing. It filled the room with joy.

A Funeral Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME – 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB on Monday, September 18, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Jeremia Radvanszky officiating.
