DELORIS PATTERSON

(McMULLIN) SCOVILLE

It is with love, tenderness, and sadness that our family shares the news of mom’s passing from this life. We know she is now with her husband Scott (Gordon), whom she has missed so much for the past 21 years. She hated to leave her family here, but she talked often of the great and grand reunion not only with dad, but with her grandson Chandler, of meeting her mother who passed away when mom was three, and seeing again her Patterson, McMullin, and Scoville families. Mom left peacefully on September fifth, and as her family we have delightful thoughts of her and dad “dancing” together with the youth, gracefulness, and joy that they always had as they danced in life here. Our memories of mom are the ones in which she was full of life and young at heart. With gratitude that is hard to express, we thank the doctors and nurses of Raymond and Lethbridge (who saw her often over these past five years), and the staff at Good Sams in Raymond; we thank each and every one of you for your wonderful, kind, respectful, and gentle care of mom. We could not have “done this” without you. Funeral arrangements will be announced when completed.

ROGERS – CHARLES PHILIP

Charlie leaves to cherish his memory his beloved and devoted wife of 61 years Shirley, his sons Murray and Darren, daughters Cathy (Norm) Riley and Alison Lock (Bruce Robertson), grandchildren Ryan, Kelsey (Jamie Wentjarv) and Greg Lock and Taryn, Bradley and Raelyn Riley. Charlie was born on the family farm eight miles southwest of Milk River in 1 – 16 district on October 20, 1927 to parents Philip and Florence (Hovey). He passed away in his 89th year on September 5, 2016 at the High River Hospital. He came into this world as a cherished child and left as a beloved husband, loving father, proud grandfather and uncle. He was the youngest in a family of six children and developed strong bonds with his brothers and sisters: Ruth (Art Mueller), George, Helen (Tony Lippa), Fred (Emily), and Harold (Terry). This helped him cope with the early death of his father in 1936 when he was nine. Charlie attended the one room school John Joe’s and frequently recounted the fun he had there, particularly in the summer months when everyone would get to school early so they could play ball. His love of baseball led to him becoming a decades long fan of the Toronto Blue Jays.

He also attended school in Coutts where he stayed with Helen and Harold and also attended Sampson School south of Burdett where Ruth was teaching. He rode into Milk River for his high school years where he was taught by Erle Rivers, for whom the school is now named. After his schooling Charlie went to work on the Tennant Ranch. There he led the life of a cowboy and had very fond memories of his time with all the other “young bucks”. Perhaps it was his cowboying that made him a Wilf Carter fan. When asked why he left the ranch Dad said he got tired of being broke! He worked in many areas after that; as a farm hand, in fuel delivery, a battery operator, a roughneck, and even becoming a skilled carpenter eventually building the home in Nanton. In 1953 at a dance in Wrentham he was smitten with a beautiful young brunette and decided she must be his. He married Shirley Kemp in ’54. Charlie sold his interest in the family homestead to Fred and their married life took them first to the Sundre country to farm and raise all manner of livestock. It was the most beautiful country he’d ever seen, but they missed the Chinooks and moved down to High River. They briskly had four children between 1955 – 62, Murray, Cathy, Alison and Darren. In ’63, Dad became a part time farmer as he also took on being a grain buyer with Pioneer Grain in Nanton and stayed in this capacity as a valued employee with Richardson until his retirement in 1990. Dad missed playing cribbage with his customers, but enjoyed his pool playing at the Kosy Korner and camping with Mom in the fifth wheel. He had been a charter member of the Nanton Lions Club and also a member of the United Church men’s club AOTS.

Dad grew up during the Depression years and carried lessons of hard work, diligence and integrity into every aspect of his life. His children watched how he lived his life and learned from his example. It was a challenge for us to measure up. Charlie was a man of few words, but a man of his word. His was a handshake that meant something. Dad was a quiet, kind and gentle man who never had an enemy in the world until he had to face a particularly cruel opponent in his later years. He is now at rest from that struggle.

He is, and will remain, deeply loved and dearly missed. “So Dad, go catch Ginger and ride over and see what Floyd and the boys are up to”. A Funeral Service will be held at the Nanton-Parkland United Church, Nanton, on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Nanton Cemetery. If desired, in memory of Charlie, memorial donations may be made to The Alzheimer Society. To email condolences, please visit http://www.snodgrassfuneralhomes.com

DELORIS PATTERSON (McMULLIN) SCOVILLE

It is with love, tenderness, and sadness that our family shares the news of mom’s passing from this life. We know she is now with her husband Scott (Gordon), whom she has missed so much for the past 21 years. She hated to leave her family here, but she talked often of the great and grand reunion not only with dad, but with her grandson Chandler, of meeting her mother who passed away when mom was three, and seeing again her Patterson, McMullin, and Scoville families. Mom left peacefully on September fifth, and as her family we have delightful thoughts of her and dad “dancing” together with the youth, gracefulness, and joy that they always had as they danced in life. Our memories of mom are the ones in which she was full of life and young at heart; we love this photo of mom – it captures who she always was, and is again! Mom leaves behind seven children: Cheri (Warren) Depew, Terri Scoville (Larry Semchuk), Randy (Kelly) Scoville, Gordon (Tricia) Scoville, Sheila (Dave) Price, Regan Scoville, and Michelle (Mark) Pilling; 24 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren … all of whom she thought were the smartest, best-looking, and greatest ‘grands’ and ‘greats’ in the world. The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, September 12th, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the RAYMOND LDS STAKE CENTRE. Extended family and friends may meet with the family from 9:30 am to 10:40 am only. Interment will be at the Temple Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who wish, may donate to the Raymond Public Library. With gratitude that is hard to express, we thank the doctors and nurses of Raymond & Lethbridge (who saw her often over these past few years), and the staff at Good Sams in Raymond; we thank each and every one of you for your wonderful, kind, respectful, and gentle care of mom. We could not have “done this” (these last five years) without you.

Mrs. Ruby Kurtzweg

1945 – 2016

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our precious mother and grandma, Ruby Sharon Kurtzweg, of Lethbridge, (formerly of Foremost) who left us on September 8, 2016 at the age of 70 years. She has gone home to be with the Lord and her late husband, the love of her life, David Kurtzweg. After 34 years of separation, we can only imagine that the reunion has been sweet.

Left behind to cherish Ruby’s memory are her three children Kerry (Vanessa) Kurtzweg, Curtis (Terri) Kurtzweg, and Brenda (Ron) Ridder. She will be lovingly missed by her grandchildren Caitlyn (Tim Aitken), Colton & Karina Kurtzweg, Jordan, Anderson, Britten & Lincoln Kurtzweg, Tannis, Jamie, & Brandt Ridder. She also leaves behind to mourn one brother, Glen Davies, of Vernon BC & her sister-in-law Lois Hoult of Lethbridge, AB.

Ruby’s story began when she was born on December 19, 1945 to Samuel and Clara Davies in Ft. St. John; the youngest daughter of four children. Ruby took her first sleigh ride coming home from the hospital to the farm where she lived with her parents. Her early years were spent on the farm doing chores and working the garden alongside her mother and her sister Vera. She attended school in Ft. St. John and later pursued a nursing program in Vancouver, BC. She moved to Medicine Hat where she completed school and graduated at the top of her class in 1968. It was in Medicine Hat that she met the love of her life, David Kurtzweg, and they married in July 1969. She started her new life in Foremost alongside her partner and together they built a farm and raised a family. As a family we enjoyed skiing, snowmobiling with friends and boating on hot summer days, but flying was the past time that Mom loved the most. Between checking crops and holidays, Dave’s plane saw a lot of use.

Mom’s world crashed in November of 1982 with the unexpected passing of her best friend and love, David. With God’s help and strength, and sheer determination, she continued raising her family and managing the farm while protecting her children from the upheaval. After Curtis graduated in 1988, Mom and Brenda moved to Three Hills, where Brenda completed high school. Mom then furthered her nursing training and worked in Drumheller. Mom always enjoyed learning and took several courses at Prairie that entertained her many interests.

In 1992, Mom moved back to Lethbridge and retired. This time of her life was very fulfilling as her children married and her family grew to include ten grandchildren. She often went out to the farm and enjoyed going for rides in the tractor and combine as this brought back fond memories and created new ones. Mom enjoyed playing games, baking pie, and having tea with her children and grandchildren. Mom loved seeing the world with her friends and family and continued to be an avid traveller. She grew tired of the southern Alberta winters and spent as much time in Yuma, AZ as she could.

Mom was a faithful servant to her Lord and Saviour. She supported many Christian organizations and missionaries and was often “caught” reading her Bible. Mom will be especially missed for her humour, thoughtfulness to others, wisdom, and hospitality; her door was always open and the teakettle was always on.

Thanks, Mom, for the legacy and Godly heritage that you have left us. You will be greatly missed by us all.

Family and Friends are invited to a visitation service between 6:00pm – 7:00pm on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at the MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 4th Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:30pm, on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at the UNIVERSITY DRIVE ALLIANCE CHURCH, 55 Columbia Blvd., West, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Pastor Jacque Forge officiating.

A Private Family Interment was held in the Foremost Cemetery.

BESTER

JOHN PAUL BESTER, of Lethbridge, Alberta, passed away peacefully at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital, B.C., on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at the age of 38 years.

John is survived by his three children; Braydon, Rylee and Adrion Bester, his mother Nancy (Randy) Fabro and his father Jim (Carolyn) Bester, his brother Michael (Colleen) Bester, his sister Cyndi Bester (Dave Vos) and sister Jessica (Ben) Spackman. John is also survived by many step siblings: Alan, Jeana, Cindy, LeeAnn, Alaina, Lauren, Dana and Jackie, his grandmothers Beatrice Shepherd and Arlene Bester and numerous nieces and nephews.

John was born in Coleman, Alberta, where he spent most of his childhood and then moved to Lethbridge as a young teenager where he graduated from Lethbridge Collegiate Institute. From a young age, it was clear that John was an adventurous entrepreneur. He always had a sparkle in his eye and a grin on his face which clearly exhibited his boundless spirit.

John’s ideas were always big and bold and often ideas that were way before their time. This never discouraged him. John had a way of filling a room and having everyone around him listening. His creative mind always had blueprints ready to go for various ventures which led him from one end of the country to the other. He loved his country and was proud to be a Canadian.

During his final days, he pushed forward with his passion of organic horticulture. He had just finished working on an organic farm on Salt Spring Island, sharing his ideas and creating videos to share his love and desire to educate people on the powers of “eating clean.” John was always talking to everyone about the importance of health and balance, which he knew, himself, was a challenge.

John leaves behind an amazing girlfriend and partner, Brianna Fitzpatrick, who embraced John’s enthusiastic vision. They were working together, over the past year, to bring to light a positive happy lifestyle that could be shared with others.

John believed in helping others. His wish was always to be an organ donor. In the end, John was able to assist four people with the donation of his strong, healthy organs.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Celebration of John’s Life at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, Alberta, on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. with his brother Michael Bester officiating. Luncheon to follow the celebration.

Pasquale is survived by his loving wife Lilia Cattoni, sons Renato (Francis) D’Ippolito, Silvano (Gail) D’Ippolito, step-sons Leo (Annelise) Cattoni and Lucio Luigi Cattoni, his grandchildren Anthony (Jackie) D’Ippolito and their son Owen, Michael D’Ippolito, Alessandro D’Ippolito (Amy Gerber), Luciano D’Ippolito, Anthony Cattoni and Renzo Cattoni, his brother Riccardo (Aurellia) D’Ippolito and 2 sisters Andonietta D’Ippolito and Lucia D’Ippolito and many beloved brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife Maria, brothers Armando, Carmine, Nicola, Pietro and his sister Beatrice and numerous brothers and sisters –in-law.

On March 21, 1933 in Sessano, Italy the extraordinary life of Pasquale began. Coming from a family of 9 children, life was difficult but somehow they all survived. During the war years, as a young child, he often spoke of going into the mountains with his brothers and sisters to avoid the bombing raids. In 1954 Pasquale married his childhood sweetheart, Maria and they were blessed with two sons, Renato and Silvano. In 1962 they travelled with their 2 small children for a better life in Canada. They first came to live in the small community of Blairmore , AB where Pasquale worked for CP Rail. In 1969 they moved to Lethbridge, AB where Pasquale worked for Sven Erickson’s Bakery eventually returning to CP Rail, retiring at the age of 65. Sadly after 40 years of marriage his wife Maria passed away. Pasquale was to find love for the second time when in 1998 he married Lilia Cattoni and had been married happily for the past 18 years.

Above all else Pasquale was a family man embracing everyone with all his heart. Love above all else is the legacy he leaves behind.

TAILFEATHERS

HOMER WINSTON (BUTCH) TAILFEATHERS “Ikinaputa” (taking off slow and rising up), beloved husband of Johnel (Peaches), passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2016 after a lengthy illness. Butch was born on the Blood Reserve at home on July 22, 1942, hence the name Homer, and Winston after Winston Churchill. His Blackfoot name came from the events that day of his birth where the current tribal leaders were being flown around the reserve. His name is reminiscent of a plane taking off slowly and rising up, Ikinaputa. His parents were Kenneth and Helen Tailfeathers. He leaves to mourn, his beloved wife, Peaches, of 47 years. When Butch and Peaches met, they formed a little Family, made up of Gina, Tracy, and soon DeeDee. They had a rich Family life, with the Girls, and then soon, Sons-in-law, Tim and Slim, and Grandchildren, Frankie (Sharlee), Ben (Clare), Clay, Mandy (Arkyn), Rylan (Kaitlen), Fallyn, McCarthy, and Dylan. He was a wonderful, loving and fun ‘Grampa’, and adored by all the grandchildren, and then great-grandchildren, Rhyle, Cooper, and Piper; adopted grandchildren Charmayne, Rodie, Trey, Chase and nieces and nephews.

Butch was a hard-working man. He worked for many departments with the Blood Tribe, especially with the Housing Department, Public Works, Administration, and the Band Ranch. He believed in working hard, and drove trucks delivering building materials, planted trees to beautify the parks, worked on the roads, built and installed cabinets. One special and important project he did for housing was to document every standing structure on the Reserve. He also helped to build the barracks and Chief Mountain Customs building, and some of the administration buildings in Waterton, and as well, he worked for the sulfur plant. He was also very artistically talented, and combined his talent with his carpentry skills to create many beautiful functional pieces of artwork. Butch and Peaches loved to be outdoors, going on their daily walks, working and beautifying their yard. They planted many trees together, which today are so very tall. They also spent a lot of time building and working on their Cabin in Blackfeet Country. He loved it there, it was their little place of paradise, especially when all the Kids showed up for a picnic.

Butch was also very athletic, involved in Rodeo, and as a younger man in Boxing. He represented the Blood Reserve and St. Paul’s Boxing Clubs, going all the way to win at the Provincial Golden Gloves. He was a formidable opponent. He also was a top Calf Roper until a roping injury. Butch was an All Around talented man, as an Artist, Cowboy, Athlete, Craftsman, and overall, an unforgettable Role Model. He was a great guy, making Friends wherever he traveled. He and Peaches made an annual trip to the CM Russell Art Show where they shared a common love for western art, they developed many friendships in the western art world. He was also a joker and great storyteller, and loved to share jokes, and had good laughs with everyone. He was proud of his culture and spoke fluent Blackfoot, speaking the high Blackfoot language. He preferred to speak Blackfoot.

Along with his loving Family, he also leaves to mourn his daughter Susan, and son, Craig; sisters Shirley and Beverly; sisters-in-law Audrey, Sylvia, and Rosie Jane.

Butch was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth & Helen; brothers, Tuffy, Punch, Punky and Spike; sisters, Caroline and Byrdeen; grandson Hayden.

The Family is so very grateful to Dr. Bester and the Staff at the Long Term Care Centre at the Cardston Hospital, especially Susan, Saul, Tammy, Cathy, Roxy, Elizabeth, Melanie, Adelaide (Dolly) Creighton, and all who made Butch’s long stay a little easier for him, providing such compassionate care. LAWRENCE HENRY (BUN) SHUFLETOSKI

March 5, 1928 – September 18, 2016

Most everyone knew him as “Bun”. He was born in Shaunavon and spent his early years growing up on his parents’ farm in the Clear Valley district of Saskatchewan, south of Maple Creek. During his time at home, Bun worked hard and learned many skills working with machinery, horses, cattle, pigs and other farm animals. Bun attended grade school in Eastend Saskatchewan where he met his wife to be Marie Rittinger. Marie and Bun were married in March of 1949, and they soon moved to their own place a few miles west of Bun’s parents’ place. They hauled in old shacks to make their home and worked the land together. Bun was particularly proud of the horses he raised on his farm; some of them became good race horses. Bun and Marie became foster parents and as well hosted nephews and nieces for summer work vacations. Bun was known for his hard work, but remembered for his constant pranks like nailing lunch kits to the bench, hiding one of your shoes, encouraging a friend on a horse to jump a small hedge where there was a hornet nest or “buzzing” a neighbour on a tractor while flying in a friend’s plane. Not all of Bun’s pranks were received so well, like the times he would ride into town on horseback and shoot out the lights (literally).

In the fall of 1967, Bun and Marie decided to sell the farm and go west. Bun wasn’t sure exactly how far west they were going to go until they found themselves in Australia. The Australian vacation was not lengthy, however Bun talked of it often and related what a wonderful time he and Marie had enjoyed. Upon their return Bun and Marie moved to a ranch near Fort Macleod, Alberta, to Pincher Creek, then to Lethbridge where they made their home until 2002. During this time Bun raised horses, worked with his brother in-law building houses, was a maintenance man at a gas plant, a labourer at a chicken barn and a hired hand at a nearby farm.

They then retired to Seven Persons where Bun loved to fix up the house and yard spending many hours tinkering in the garage. As the years started catching up with them, they sold their house and moved into a retirement condo in Medicine Hat. In the spring of 2015, Bun lost Marie after 66 years of marriage.

Bun was predeceased by his wife Marie (nee Rittinger), father Frank, mother Ella (Otto), brother Lewis and sister Cecile Gallot. Left to mourn are his sister Ruth Dovell, sister in-law Vicky Shufletoski and many nieces and nephews. At Bun’s request there will be no service; interment will take place at a later date.

He had the privilege of playing basketball for team Alberta where he was awarded Team All Star and went on to play basketball for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. From 1999-2001, Greg served as a missionary for the LDS church in the Philippines. Due to his quick language skills and excellent work ethic, he was called as a district leader at 3 months, a zone leader at 7 months and at 9 months he became the Assistant to the President–the highest rank on the mission. He stayed in this position until his discharge making him the youngest and longest serving AP in the mission’s history. Greg was the author of two children’s books, S is for Spirit Bear, and Chin Music, both of which were published and received rave reviews. Greg attended Medical School at the University of Calgary and went on to train as a Urologist at Queen’s University in Kingston Ontario. Greg fought hard and painfully for five years to stave off a rare form of cancer – a disease that eventually eroded his body, but not his mind or his heart. His generosity of spirit was only surpassed by his humble nature and incredible sense of humour. Nothing brought him more joy than his three little boys, whom he fiercely adored. He was the epitome of selflessness, a warm-hearted and generous soul who will be sorely missed by the many lives he touched.

McCLAIN

JOHN BARTON “JACK” McCLAIN, beloved husband of the late Bernice McClain of Raymond, passed away at “home”, the Raymond General Hospital on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at the age of 93 years.

He is the loving father of: Vicky McClain of Airdrie, Darlynn (Jack) Braden of Gibsons, BC, Kevin (Susan) McClain of Fort Langley, BC, and Shelley (Rob) Lowe of Lethbridge. He leaves behind four grandchildren: Kacie Dyck of Lethbridge, Sharlina (Barry) McClain of Airdrie, Nicole Lowe of Lethbridge, and Landon Lowe of Lethbridge; six great grandchildren: Colton, Tyson, Gage, and Cayden Dyck, and Jenny and Jack Johnston. He is survived by two brothers: Gordon McClain of Duncan, BC and Don McClain of Lethbridge.

Jack is predeceased by his parents Delilah McClain and John McClain, sister Clara Rolfson and grandson Quinton Zobell.

Jack was born on April 27, 1923 in Magrath. He was the oldest of four children. At age 19 he went to war, serving from 1942-1946. Driving a tank put him on the front line. He was very proud to have served his country. After returning from war he soon married the love of his life, Bernice Ralph. They shared 58 wonderful years together. One of his many accomplishments was being employed by Canadian Western Natural Gas for 32 years; in those years he was first to tell you he had been accident free!

At his passing he had been retired for 31 years, almost as long as he had worked. Golfing, fishing, wood-working and puzzles are just a few of the things he loved to do. The thing he loved and was the most proud of was his family. It’s hard to imagine life without him. Everyone that knew him, loved him. A perfect example of a Father, grandfather and friend.

Special heartfelt thank-yous to his “other daughter”, Roslynn Heggie and his entire “family” at the Raymond General Hospital for their love, care and devotion. He loved you all!

Friends may meet the family on Tuesday, September 27 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, RAYMOND STAKE CENTRE, Raymond, Alberta, or prior to the funeral service on September 28 from 12:00 – 12:50 p.m. at the church.

The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the church with Bishop Wayne Smith officiating. Interment to follow in the Temple Hill Cemetery, Raymond.
