GRYSZCZUK

JOSEF GRYSZCZUK SR., cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle passed peacefully to Eternal Life at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge on August 13, 2016 at the great age of 102.

Joe was born on December 28, 1913 in the small town of Rovno in Russia. As a young man Joe immigrated to Germany and married his wife Rosalie (1940). Surviving the WWII as German immigrants, Joe and Rosie settled in Canada with their 5 children in 1955, first moving to Diamond City, then Picture Butte in 1959. Joe worked in the construction of the irrigation systems throughout southern Alberta and retired in 1978. The couple relocated to Lethbridge in 1994 and became great friends with all the people they met along the way.

Joe lived to enjoy and work in his garden, and took great delight in creating, grafting and maintaining a number of apple trees including heritage varieties from Eastern Europe. Joe also liked to travel and fish in Southern Alberta and Montana, as well as to visit his children in Manitoba and Ontario. A quiet man, a church goer, and a good neighbour – he became more like himself every year.

Joe was predeceased by his wife Rosalie (nee Matejak) in 2002, and two daughters Hanna in 1995 and Sofia in 1943, as well as his parents Ephraim and Hanna, as well as numerous relatives in Ukraine. He will be much missed by his family, daughter Gerda of Ottawa, sons Erich (Jenny) of Brandon, William and Josef Jr. (Joe) of Lethbridge; and also by his granddaughters Lianne and Deanna, grandsons Wayne (Debbie) and Daniel (Tanya), and great-grandsons Alexandre and Christopher.

Thank you to sons William and Josef Jr., as well as daughter Gerda, grand-daughter Lianne, and grand-niece Sharon for all their love and attention throughout Joe’s later years and during his illness. Also, the family extends many thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Chinook Regional Hospital, as well as to the staff at the Good Samaritan Centre in West Lethbridge for their compassion.

Donations may be sent to the Good Samaritan Home or the Chinook Regional Hospital.

Stubborn, persevering, hardworking and honest – Joe was loved by his family and friends.

The bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left

unsaid and deeds left undone. (Harriet Beecher Stowe)

Joe lived a long, good life. He said what he wanted to say and did everything he wanted to do. No tears need to be shed. Joe had a good run!

Marvin Christensen
1931 – 2016
Marvin Eugene Christensen, beloved husband of the late Louise Christensen, passed away in Taber on Friday, August 12, 2016 at the age of 84 years.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the family at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 – 48 Avenue, Taber on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. and also at the church prior to the funeral service on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 between 10:00 A.M. and 10:40 A.M.

Burial to follow at the Taber Memorial Garden. Condolences may be forwarded by visiting our website at http://www.southlandfuneral.com.
Marvin is survived by his children Darrell (Jo-Ann) Christensen of Taber and their children Coralee (Chad) Hoskins, Tricia Coutts (Brett Langhofer), Jordan (Kirstin) Simek and Josh Simek (Kalese Shannon); Marilyn (Collin) Leismeister of Taber and their children Ryan (Laura) Leismeister and Carrie (Mike) Wilson; Connie (Daniel) Oberholtzer of Taber and their children Aryn (Jeff) Kramer and Chase Oberholtzer; Glenda (Don) Hepworth of Taber and their children Codi (Kristine) Oberholtzer, Paige Oberholtzer (Ty Oulton), Crystal (Nate) Cummins, Holly (Ryan) Okleberry, Val (Waylon) Goeble and Ashley (Chad) Stewart as well as several great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Sylvia (Sheldon) Rogers, sisters-in-law Rose (Lloyd) Munro-Graham and Cecilia Minion.
He was predeceased by his wife Louise, granddaughter Marissa Christensen, parents Alfred and Inzie Christensen, eight brothers, four sisters and in-laws John and Frida Bachman.
Marvin was born on December 17, 1931 in Stirling to Alfred and Inzie Christensen, he was one of fourteen children. He was raised on the family farm in Wrentham. Marvin married Louise Bachman on April 3, 1954 and together they raised four children, Darrell, Marilyn, Connie and Glenda. He worked for the County of Warner for several years, building and blading roads. In 1967 he began working in the oilfield and in 1970 he, with partners, started Triwell Oilfield Construction. In 1989 he became sole owner of Triwell, which is still active today. Marvin went to the office every day, right up to the day before his death. In October 2001, his wife Louise passed away, this left a huge void in his life. He loved winter and horse racing in Phoenix, which he did every year for the past thirty years. Marvin was known by many names, Marvin, Chief, Dad, but mostly Papa, even to those who weren’t his. Marvin was about Triwell, he was about horse racing, but most of all he was about family. His family was everything. Who puts a swimming pool in their backyard without any intention of ever entering it? Papa did! His kids, grandkids, horses and dogs, he lived for them. It was a daily occurrence to see Papa napping in his chair with four dogs situated somewhere amongst him. They will miss his snuggles and we will miss giving him trouble for handing out to many treats. We are very thankful that he was in good health and able to be in his home until the end. Before his passing he told Connie that he wanted to go see the Grande Prairie race track. They went there on his last weekend, not only for the horse races, but to see two of his grandchildren that had been there looking after horses. That sneaky guy visited with each of us within the last two weeks of his life. We think he knew his time was done, but he couldn’t leave us without some goodbyes. He had waited too long to be reunited with his love, Louise. It was time to be Nanny and Papa again. We are fortunate to have so many great memories; he will be forever in our hearts.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Marvin’s name may be made directly to a charity of one’s choice.

Tony Roth
1928 – 2016

Anthony Thomas Roth, beloved husband of Kathleen Roth, passed away in Lethbridge, with family by his side, on Monday, August 15, 2016 at the age of 88 years.
Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers at Assumption Catholic Church, 2405 – 12 Avenue South, Lethbridge on Friday, August 19, 2016 at 7:00 P.M.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 1113 – 1 Street East, Bow Island on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. Burial to follow at the Bow Island Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded by visiting our website at http://www.southlandfuneral.com.
A dear husband, dad, grandpa “Gramps”, great grandpa, uncle and brother, Tony will be lovingly remembered by his wife Kay and their children Alan (Janet) Roth of Calgary, Loreen (Len) Mezei of Medicine Hat, Gerry (Rhonda) Roth of Lethbridge and Patti (Bill) Kaye of Coaldale; grandchildren Jeffrey Hamilton (Monica), Kristin Doherty (Darren), Amy (Rob) Burton, Stephanie (Jonathan) Beekman, Jennifer (Chris) Harris, Christina Kaye (Kyle), Jessica Roth (Nathan), Eric (Alisha) Mezei, Aaron Kaye, Anthony Gibson (Marina), Anja Roth, and eleven great grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered by his sister Isabelle Allen, sisters-in-law Jeanne Roth, Anne Roth and by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his birth mother Anna Roth (nee Schlachter), father Joseph Roth and stepmother Barbara Roth (nee Hertz); brothers George Roth, Jim Roth and Frank Roth; sister Dorothy Rapson and brothers-in-law Wilf Rapson and Dwayne Allen.
Tony was born in Medicine Hat on January 9, 1928. He married his sweetheart Kathleen Simpson on July 6, 1953. Tony and Kay, supported by their children, enjoyed immense good fortune as a family, having been married for sixty three years.
Tony and Kay loved to visit with relatives and friends, go camping and just have people over, with everyone contributing to the stories and memories about lives and times. They were a great couple and just happy to be with each other, wherever “there” might be.
Much of what Tony found precious in life he saw through the eyes of his children, his grandchildren and his great grandchildren, and he shared a deep bond with every one of them. He had many gifts and a heart of gold, but above all he cared about kids, identified with them and always had their best interests at heart. In him, they recognized a friend; a friend to rely on, to create a secret handshake with, to fix a broken toy, to let them win a game, to bandaid a scrape and when they were older, to teach them how to drive. Tony’s sense of humour kept them entertained while he taught them to paint fences, fish, shoot, garage-sale or a hundred other such vital life skills and most of all, to become upstanding adults. He was “Grandfather” personified. Every one of them, his children included, loved “Gramps” more than anything.
Tony farmed in the Bow Island area for thirty five years before his retirement in 1992. As a farmer, he excelled in invention and creativity with crescent wrench, electric arc welder or acetylene torch in hand, joking how agriculture seemed to have more to do with fixing equipment than with horticulture.
He was also a talented painter and sculptor, creating many pieces of art throughout his lifetime. A man of quiet, solid faith in the Roman Catholic faith, Tony was extremely proud of achieving 4th degree Knighthood with The Knights of Columbus in 1996. He also received the “Melvin Jones Fellow Award” for Humanitarian Services with Lions Club International. He was also a member of the St. Michael’s School board for seventeen years.
Tony had a special connection with his surrogate brothers and sisters of the George and Agnes Roth family as they helped raise him and his brothers Jim and George after the passing of his mother at a young age. In his mind, they were his brothers and sisters. Tony and Kay moved to Lethbridge in 1996 where he resided until his passing.

1963 – 2016

Lethbridge, Alberta – Bernard Dick Hoogerdijk, born on November 30, 1963, passed on to Heavenly glory, on Monday, August 15, 2016. Bernie Hoogerdijk was called to his eternal home on Monday, August 15, 2016. He leaves behind his parents, Cornelis and Hermina (Breukelman) Hoogerdijk, Willy Hoogerdyk and Trish Wiersema, Ed Hoogerdyk and Alice (Bergsma) Hoogerdyk, Ron and Tamara (Wiersema) Hoogerdyk, John and Margaret (Kobes) Hoogerdijk, Ed and Margaret (Hoogerdyk) Tams, and many nephews, nieces and close friends. Bernie was born and raised in Lethbridge, AB and Taber, AB. He attended Coaldale Christian School in Coaldale, AB and W.R. Myers High School in Taber, AB. He spent the prime years of his life as a salesman at Harp Furniture in Taber, AB. Customers enjoyed his jovial character and often stated: “We want to deal with Bernie!” After his time in Taber, Bernie moved on to Coaldale, Lethbridge, Winnipeg, and then back to Lethbridge. He took on a variety of jobs during this time. He last worked at the Lethbridge Food Market. It was a dream of his to be an architect. Although this dream was never realized, he did offer up some of his own drawings and concepts of churches and unique buildings. He enjoyed photography and took many beautiful pictures of spectacular landscapes and modern buildings. His leisure time was spent travelling to visit family in Manitoba, vacationing in the Maritimes, and walking around one of his favorite places, Waterton Lakes National park. Bernie was known for his unassuming character, loud and vibrant laughter, crazy stories, and his love to be around people. He was not shy. He would approach anyone and always had time to meet people for coffee at the local Tim’s. He had a rare penchant for the fine art of eating hot dogs. The Red Dog Diner in Lethbridge and Wieners of Waterton would have known him as a regular customer. During the latter part of his life emotional, physical and spiritual struggles took their toll on Bernie. His Lord and Saviour knew this. He laid Bernie down to rest in his residence in Lethbridge, AB. He wrapped his loving arms around him and said: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” He took Bernie to Heaven – his final move, his final residence, his eternal home.

“Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

MCNABB

It is with deep sorrow and much love that the family of PEGGY EVA (REEDER) MCNABB announce her passing on August 16, 2016. Peggy was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She leaves behind her husband, Thomas W. McNabb, their three children; Kriste (Chris) Rose, J. Barton (Barbara) McNabb, and Patrick (Audrey) McNabb; and her dearly loved grandchildren; Clarke, Parker, Derek, Ally, Aaron, Kylee, Brooklynn, Logan, Ty, Boston, Madison, and Jameson. She also leaves behind her four siblings; Linda (Sid) Thatcher, Bill (Pam) Reeder, Mac (Loretta) Reeder, and Shellee (Gary) Walburger, and numerous nephews and nieces. She was pre-deceased by her son, Thomas Gordon (T.J.) McNabb.

Peggy was born on March 16, 1944, to Lynn and Maxine Reeder. She grew up on a ranch near Cardston, Alberta, where she naturally acquired the tough and spirited nature of a cowgirl. When she wasn’t feeding the cows, fixing a fence, or pulling weeds from the garden, she was riding her horse around barrels in the barn or out in the open pasture. Peggy’s favorite story from her childhood involves an unexpected run-in that she and her horse had with a barbed-wire fence, which resulted in a large Y-shaped scar across her thigh. To Peggy, it wasn’t just a scar, it was an exclusive “branding” that symbolized her commitment to and love for her church, The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints.

After graduating from high school, Peggy moved to Lethbridge where she attended and graduated from the Galt School of Nursing. Her career path was just as dynamic as she was. She worked as a registered nurse for several years, but found more meaning and excitement in conceptualizing ideas and watching them become successful realities. She had a passion for projects, and was never short of having a few projects in her hands, with several more stewing in her mind.

One of her favorite projects was using her life experiences and knowledge to bless the lives of those around her. It was through her compassion for people and a desire to help others that she discovered her love for energy medicine. Her constant need to learn, acquire, and practice new ideas and skills was insatiable.

Beyond anything else, Peggy’s greatest joy was her family. She took on the role as the family’s nurse, teacher, peacemaker, confidant, and friend with vim and vigor. She looked forward to spending time with her family, and was determined to create extraordinary experiences for her grandchildren. She was the perfect grandmother. Peggy was adamant about not leaving this world before attending a Reeder family reunion; which, by her own design, took place in the shadow of Old Chief Mountain (her favorite place in the world), and seeing her oldest grandson return from an LDS mission.

Peggy was an example of what every person should be. She was decent, kind, loving, forgiving, compassionate, strong, and courageous. She was a woman of truth and integrity. She led by example and instilled values in others. She has left this world with a legacy that her family and friends will cherish forever.

Friends may meet the family at the Lethbridge Alberta East Stake Center, 4105 Forestry Avenue South , Lethbridge, on Friday night, August 19th, 2016 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm or at the church on Saturday, August 20th, 2016 from 1:00 to 1:45 pm prior to the funeral service.

The Funeral Service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Lethbridge Alberta East Stake Center, on Saturday, August 20th, 2016 at 2:00 p.m., with Bishop Aaron Low Officiating.

Interment to follow in the Mountain View Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to: http://www.legacyfuneralhome.ca

Alfred Hirch
1926 – 2016
Alfred Hirch beloved husband, father, opa and great opa left the struggles of this earth to his eternal rest and into the arms of  his Lord and Savior in the middle morning of Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at the age of 90 years.
The Funeral Service will be held at Peace Lutheran Church, 4619 – 56 Avenue, Taber on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. Burial to follow at the Taber Memorial Garden. Condolences may be forwarded by visiting our website at http://www.southlandfuneral.com.
Alfred is survived by his beloved wife Elizabeth, son Roy Hirch of Taber, daughter Brenda Renner of Lethbridge and son Mark (Gill) Hirch of Taber, in addition his much loved
grandchildren Dannielle (Jamie) Renner, Mackenzie (Chance) Jensen, Amanda Hirch, Kyler Hirch and Morgan Hirch; his truly beloved great granddaughter Harlynn, who shares the same birthday as Opa. He is also survived by his brothers Edmund (Ruby) and Reinhold (Lottie); sister Irma (Alan) Neufeld and his beloved kliene bruder Helmut as well as his cousins Inga and Waldemar. We apologize if we have left anyone out, but our Hirch clan is so large we have been called a tribe and our father truly loved you all his nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his eltern Daniel and Olga, in-laws Jacob and Susanna Zottnick, sister Rose,  brother Otto, Tante Munda, sisters-in-law Lilly Hirch and Hanna Herman and by other
relatives.
Alfred was born in 1926 in Werben, Poland, into a devoted German Lutheran farming family that had lived in the German colonies of Volhynia, in the Ukraine for at least a hundred and fifty years. Our father was told that when his mother gave birth she shortly thereafter continued her work in the fields and that was the story of Alfred Hirch’s life hard work, struggle and trust in God on the farm. Adversity seemed to be his middle name and he met all with a quiet confidence even his last which he met on his own terms.
Shortly after his birth his father took his family to the Polish Second Republic which had defeated the Red Army and ruled the Western Ukraine. The Second Republic had the greatest cultural mosaic of any country in Europe and the leader Josef Pilsudski was a Lutheran. The Hirch family prospered and our father grew up in an area near Kiev. In 1942 at the age of sixteen, he heard the patriotic call of his people and joined the Heer of the Werhrmact. Serving with distinction and rising through the ranks in a mere two years to unteofficier in an elite regiment and serving in the bloodiest campaigns in the east and west, most notably the attempted relief of Stalingrad and the battle of Aachen.
Following the war the Hirch’s settled in Germany for a short time and in 1951 immigrated courtesy of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod to their beloved Canada and Alberta. He met the love of his life Elizabeth, got married and for a short time farmed in Readymade, before moving to the farm south of Taber where he lived for the last sixty two years of his life. He was immensely proud of his three children, grandchildren and great grandchild. He set a fine example of hard work, thrift accountability and faith in God that will be hard to match.
Papa wir liebe du and treasure your example, no one could have a better example as a German and Christian man and you will be sorely missed by your family and friends. May you have found the peace you need and deserved until we are with you again.

KUBIK

May 22, 1922 – Aug. 19, 2016

On August 19, 2016, our beloved mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, and friend, MARY MADELINE KUBIK (nee Zachar), passed away at the age of 94 years.

She is lovingly remembered by children Vera, Jerry (Dianne), Rick and Mary; her grandchildren, Natasha (Cam), Ben, David (Corrine), Jeff (Fa-Linn), Dan, Phyllis (Bill), Sam, Thea, and Brian; her great-grandchildren, Rosie and Katie MacDougald and Walter Kubik; her daughter-in-law Brenda, sister-in-law Josephine, numerous nieces and nephews, and her special friend Alice Heynen; her caregiver who often visited and brought a smile to her face.

Along with her husband, Mary was predeceased by her parents, siblings, son Jack, son-in-law Bill Mokoski (Vera), and daughters-in-law Susan (Rick) and Wendy (Jack).

Mary was born on May 22, 1922 in Bogdanovce, Czechoslovakia to Ludvik and Mary Zachar. When Mary was just eight years old she immigrated to Canada with her parents, sisters Annie and Katie and brother Michael. They worked as laborers on farms around the Lethbridge area during the spring and summer and then lived in Lethbridge in the winter. In November of 1939 Mary married Jerry Kubik Sr. and they had 71 years together before he passed away in 2010.

Mom’s passions were cooking, gardening, sewing, travelling, card playing, and reading. She and Jerry travelled all over the world but their favorite trips were to Duck Lake and Mission Lake, Montana for some fishing. Mom loved to tell us stories of her childhood in Europe and being a farm wife in the 1940’s and 50’s; and it was this, combined with her love of food, that led her to publish her own cookbook.

Mom’s freezer was always full of baking and all of us have memories of her in the kitchen creating wonderful meals and baked goods.

In her later years Mom’s world became smaller as she lost her sight and hearing, but she faced all her health challenges with courage, grace, and always a sense of humor. Special thanks to the staff at Extendicare Fairmont for their wonderful care in Mom’s last days.

A Prayer Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB, on Tuesday August 23, 2016 at 7:00 P.M.with Francis & Cybele Noronha officiating.

NIKLES

1966 – 2016

GREGORY WAYNE NIKLES, of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Roxanne Nikles, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital surrounded by his family, after a courageous, hard fought battle with cancer, on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at the age of 50 years.

Greg’s memory will be cherished by his loving wife and companion of 26 years, Roxanne and their boys Brendan and Rylan. Greg will be dearly missed by his mom, brother, sisters, nieces and nephews, his second family and his many friends and colleagues.

Greg valued his family. He loved and enjoyed their many vacations, especially their time spent at their Phoenix property. Greg proudly supported his sons, Brendan and Rylan in all their endeavours, cheering them on at their sporting events. During numerous winters, Greg would build an outdoor rink in their backyard for the boys on which they would spend hours practicing. Greg was a food connoisseur. He and Roxanne spent many special evenings together appreciating good food, wine and each other’s company. They spent their 20th anniversary in Huatulco, Mexico. Their love was celebrated with a rose petal path and a candlelight dinner on the beach. Greg shared a special bond with Roxanne, whom he called his “angel”. She provided boundless support throughout his illness and their life together.

Greg had a very strong passion for the agriculture and seed industry, as he was an active member of the Canadian Seed Trade Association and was a chairman of the hybrid canola seed production committee during the time of tremendous growth in the hybrid seed industry. Greg also had a deep level of concern for the Southern Alberta community and was a leader in the development of the annual “Harvest Howler”, an important fund raising event for local community programs and associations. Greg was highly regarded and respected by his colleagues and the industry will miss him.

In his younger years, he played hockey in Calgary and on the Blood Reserve. Jimmy demonstrated his love for the sport by supporting and encouraging his younger brother Lorand, and his son Joran, in their hockey aspirations. He also helped one of his brothers, Chad Bare Shin Bone, with his start into the sport. He had a passion for music, and loved going to music concerts. His father, Roland, bought him his first guitar, and he became an avid musician, and loved singing and playing guitar. His passion for music led him to teach his younger brother, Desi, to play guitar, and that very passion was then passed onto his son, Trace.

Jimmy was extremely intelligent and ambitious, who was very business minded. After drafting blueprints for the idea of a feedlot on the Blood Reserve, he took an agricultural science course at the Lethbridge College. In 2010, he attended the University of Calgary for business management. He learned his strong work ethics from his father, Jim, who also taught him carpentry and mechanics. With his strong work ethic and being a high energy person, Jimmy always occupied his time with work and school. At the time of his passing, he was a renovations contractor for the Blood Tribe Housing Department. Following in the political footsteps of his grandfathers, Jimmy also pursued tribal politics.

Family was very important to Jimmy, and he was fiercely protective of his loved ones. His children and grandson were the most important part of his life, and they brought great joy and pride to him. He was very supportive of their educational, sport and musical endeavours, and celebrated their achievements always. He was very close to his siblings, and loved his nieces and nephews as his own children. His nieces and nephews looked to him as a father figure. He had a close bond with his younger sisters, LeeAnne and Rolanda. He was very close to his mother, Peggy, and she called him ‘her baby’ and he often reminded his mother of that. His siblings liked to tease him as being ‘her big baby’. Jimmy called his mother, ‘my angel’ and he never hesitated to inform his mother of his whereabouts and who he was with. When he was younger, he would get into mischief with his uncles Fritz and Kelsey Chief Moon, and his aunt Trixie Chief Moon who was referred to as his ‘partner in crime’ because they would do crazy things together when they were younger. He loved his cousins very dearly and called them his brothers and sisters, and rarely used their first names upon greeting them. As the fourth oldest grandchild of Mona Chief Moon, he shared a special bond with her and she was a great support to him, especially when he ran in the tribal elections on the Blood Reserve. As a young child, his paternal grandmother, Annie Shot Both Sides, was willing to raise him as a granny kid but due to an illness was unable to do so but provided for him in other ways.

Jimmy’s motto was, “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful.” And, that he was! He was beautiful in so many ways. His sociable nature, attracted people to Jimmy, and it garnered him many loyal friends who he considered family. Barbecues were his favourite because it provided the opportunity to spend time with family and friends. As a toddler, he was already a character of his own, a go-getter. He was special to everyone. Even so that his great grandfather, Victor Chief Moon, gave him the pet name ‘Jumbo’. As Grandma Mona’s fourth oldest grandchild, his innate ability to lead gave him that take-charge attitude and he was looked up to as the leader amongst his cousins. You can be sure to find him comforting family in times of hardship and encouraging everyone to persevere and rise above the obstacles in their lives. There was a noticeable presence about him that put him at the centre of attention, due in part to his caring and humble ability to make everyone feel accepted. He never excluded anyone. Jimmy had an effervescent laugh that cannot be forgotten. It always rose above others. And, his comical side kept everyone in laughter. Everyone had a special bond with Jimmy, one that was unique to each relationship, and he will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Natasha; brother, Roland Jr. and Jimmy Big Throat; sister-in-law Tannis Big Throat; five infant nieces and nephews; grandparents, Mona Chief Moon and Willie Plain Woman, Jim and Annie Shot Both Sides I, and Isabelle Big Throat; uncles Gary and Fritz Chief Moon; Clovis (Delphine), Bernard (Ella) and Rodrig (Molly) Shot Both Sides; aunts, Pauline Eagle Child, Mildred Chief Moon, and Flora Healy; cousins, Daffney Chief Moon, Walter Eagle Child, and Jamie Soosay; great grandparents, Victor and Mary Chief Moon, Chief Jim and Annie Shot Both Sides I, and adopted grandparents, Ray and Adeline Many Chief.

VARZARI

MICHAEL ARTHUR “COUTTSO” VARZARI, of Lethbridge, passed away suddenly on Friday, August 26, 2016.

Couttso was born in Lethbridge on November 17, 1929 and was raised ‘down Number Three’. He never forgot his humble yet colourful beginnings in that neighbourhood and was full of great tales of his early life there. He always attributed his strong and solid work ethic and his appreciation for the simple things in life to his upbringing ‘down Number Three’.

Couttso loved to work and started his work career early in life. Shortly after completing grade eight, he worked on the Mogus Farm in Southern Alberta. Later, his work adventures took him, along with his brother, Beaver, to a farm in Vernon B.C., and later still to a logging camp in the Lower Mainland. Back in Lethbridge, he landed a job with General Construction and later was offered a position with the City of Lethbridge. He stayed with the City, working from the ground up, first as an apprentice and then as a full-fledged electrician for the Electric Department and finally retiring as Superintendent of Construction.

In his later years, when ill-health kept him from being as physically active as he used to be, he would lament, “I just wish I could work…”. At 86 years of age, two days before his passing, he was still saying that. Fittingly, he died doing work that he loved: tending to his amazingly productive tomato plants.

In addition to work, Couttso’s passions were many. He was a great collector of relics from days gone by, and would often spend long hours fixing and retrofitting items that were simply junk to other people. Couttso was an avid reader and a lifelong learner. He loved history books, western novels, philatelic magazines, as well as his beloved seniors’ paper, and the good old daily news.

Despite his infirmities in later life, Couttso always lived with gusto. His laughter was contagious and inimitable. It came from somewhere deep inside, and would fill the room, and all those in it, with sheer delight. He loved well-cooked meals, and his ability not only to savour good food, but to satiate himself with it, was nothing short of legendary. He loved, and looked forward to, his Thursday evening outings for liver and onions with Steam and Davey, his ever-loyal co-conspirators.

He loved the great spreads put on by Kay and Verna, and he thoroughly enjoyed his coffee and people-watching times at Timmie’s with Ross, or Pat and Sissel.

Couttso was a profoundly spiritual, if not traditionally religious, man. He loved and appreciated his family and friends deeply, and was a fiercely loyal husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend. Kindhearted at the most essential level, Couttso travelled to the beat of his own drummer, and was always, uniquely, his own man. He has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those close to him. His exit from this life leaves an emptiness no one else can fill.

Couttso is dearly loved and will be acutely missed by all his family and friends: daughter, Michaelynn (Frank); grandsons, Gary (Amanda), and Bobby (Kathleen); great-grandsons, Jacob and Owen; brothers-in-law, Dave (Verna), Tom (Linda), Pat (Sissel); very special cousins, Steam and Davey; dear friends and neighbours, Kay and Ross; as well as a significant extended family of nieces and nephews and cousin, Vicky. He was predeceased by his wife, Theresa, his brothers, William and George, and his parents, Fred and Veronica.

While still a ‘kid,’ living and working in Point Grey, Couttso was known to frequent a local church there. Consequently, his coworkers dubbed him, “Angel.” And so it is, now, with hearts full of appreciation for a man well loved, and a life well lived, we bid you, Couttso, “Fly on, Angel, fly on.”

A Celebration of Michael’s Life will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB., on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. with Deacon Cliff Bogdan officiating.

PERRIN

Garry William Perrin, husband and best friend of Rowena Perrin (nee Anderson) passed away surrounded by his family on Monday, August 29, 2016 at the age of 72 years after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.

Garry was born in Fort Macleod in 1944. He was a fun loving man of compassion, many interests and great determination, beloved by his family and friends.

He was passionate about his family, farming and his friends. He loved experiencing new places with Rowena with whom he enjoyed several wonderful trips. He spent many years farming on the Blood Reserve as well as running the family farm. He was always a farmer/rancher but also spent time managing the Blood Band farm and owning and operating the Fort Macleod UFA .

Garry’s love for horses was evident in that his last wish was to ride Tess’s black horse. Dad’s doctor said “that he had been dealt a tough hand but was playing it with dignity and strength”. We are so proud of him.

Garry is survived by his wife Rowena of Fort Macleod, three daughters; Dana (Dan) Burrows, Darcee (Nick) Jakovljevic, and Leanne (Richard) Feller. He is also survived by six grandchildren; Bradley, Brett, Dani, Jaime, Tess and Tristan. He will be sadly missed by family, friends, his kitty nurse Rascal and his four legged best friend, Will.

ELKJAER

July 30, 1920 – August 20, 2016

KAJ MARTIN ELKJAER, of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at the Fairmont Extendicare, on Saturday, August 20th, 2016 at the age of 96

years. He was predeceased by his loving wife Ketty of 73 years in 2015.

Kaj is survived by Liss (Don) Kundich, Kurt (Thelma) Elkjaer, Karin (Don) Fung, Linda (Bob) Copeland, Peter (Janet) Elkjaer, Sonja Elkjar, Darren (Carie) Elkjaer; grandchildren Robert, Marty, Monique, Shane, Stacey, Martin, Kathleen, Michael (deceased), Nigel, Justin, Ryan, Kerri, Scott, Tamara, Krista, Taylor, David, Jennifer, Daniel, Cayla and many great and great great-grandchildren.

Kaj and Ketty met while he was working on a neighbouring farm and their love story began. They married in May 1941 and emigrated from Denmark to Alberta in 1950, settling in Coutts in 1953. Shortly thereafter, they started a successful poultry farm. Mom and Dad were forerunners in organic husbandry. They received a commendation from the provincial and federal government for their consistent high quality of poultry. Dad loved to work. All who knew Kaj recognized his tenacity, work ethic, integrity and willingness to tackle any obstacle.

In 1967, Dad sold his farm and moved his family to Lethbridge. In 1968 and over the next 25 years, Mom and Dad opened their hearts and home to many special needs foster children. During that time, Dad enjoyed fishing, camping and travelling. Dad’s special joy was landscaping and keeping his yard pristine and a beauty to behold. Mom and Dad were pleased to receive “Yard of the Year” award, which was presented by Communities in Bloom.

In later years, Kaj and Ketty enjoyed walking their beloved dogs around Henderson Park, where on their way home had a special bench where they rested before continuing their journey. “The Last Stop Before Home”. We are grateful that the bench where they sat has been memorialized in their honour.

Dad has requested no funeral. So friends, when you are out walking, sit on their bench and behold the beauty before you. Over the years, Mom and Dad treasured their special friendships that lasted their lifetime.

Dad, the journey has been long but now the two of you are together again in your eternal home with our Lord.

Let it wash away the pain

But try to be brave

And learn how to dance in the rain
