The Funeral Service will be held at the Taber Civic Centre, 4720 – 50 Street, Taber on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at 1:00 P.M. A private burial will follow at the Taber Memorial Garden. Condolences may be forwarded by visiting our website at http://www.southlandfuneral.com.
Jean leaves to mourn her two daughters Audrey (Brian) Gavlas of Saskatoon and their children CJ and Parker; Kendra (Richard) Merkl of Taber and their children Mayson, Broc (Jill) and Reese. She is also survived by her brothers-in-law Ken Christensen and Garold (Margaret) Bullock; sisters-in-law Joan Burge, Diane (Leo) Layton and Elaine Wilkes as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband Ken Bullock; son Curtis Bullock; mother Ella Burge; sisters Judy Christensen and Donna Hall; brother Bill Burge.
Jean was born in Athabasca living in many locations during her formative years before settling in Taber. She graduated from high school and immediately began her life long career at the Taber Times. She appeared to have worked every job at the Taber Times, starting as a type setter and eventually found her most fulfilling position in advertising. She enjoyed working with the staff and clients so much that even at retirement after forty seven years, she went back and picked up contract work.
Jean loved and promoted the Town of Taber. Through the years in advertising she built a network of relationships with the entire Taber community. Local businesses would see her coming with her clip board and knew they had to pull out their cheque books. They couldn’t say no to Jean. Jean had a tireless commitment to her work and her community. She loved her town and believed that everyone should ‘Shop Local’.
Jean chaired and volunteered for many committees that promoted and enhanced the town. Taber Chamber of Commerce, Corn Fest, Taber Police Commission and Handy Bus are just a few examples of her dedication. She also loved to socialize and belonged to groups such as Toastmasters, TOPS and the local bowling league. Jean was a positive role model in the community which resulted in her being recognized as Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1992 and was honored with the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II – Golden Jubilee Medal.
Most importantly was her commitment to her family. She organized and attended all family reunions, all family functions and activities. Jean was also an athlete and loved playing for the Hanzel’s Short Stops. In her later years she took much pleasure in watching her grandchildren on a soccer pitch, ball diamond, volleyball court and hockey rink. You knew she was there by her unique whistle and her hoot and holler.
Jean will be remembered for her competitive card playing, her love of coffee, her infectious laugh and her love for community, family and her loyal friends.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Jean’s name may be made directly to the Taber and District Health Foundation 4326 – 50 Avenue, Taber, Alberta T1G 1N9.

PHILIP BUTTERFIELD

December 19, 1923 – January 22, 2020

Philip died early on January 22, 2020. A month prior he had celebrated his 96th birthday, with a large party attended by family and friends from all over Canada and the US. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jenifer, and by his children Deirdre, Aidan (Margreet), Oliver (Judy), Augustus (Janet), Nicholas (Nikola) and Victoria (Andy); by his grandchildren Niall (Kayley), Nadia (Terry), Megan, Mary, Sally (Magdi), Patrice (Sam), Bergen, Reuben (Heidi), Linnaea, Helene, Alyosha, Nelson, Naomi Rose, Patrick, Rebecca and Aidan; by his great-grandchildren Georgia, Andrew, Clarissa(David), Eleanor, Wilfred, Olivia, Noah, Rory and Felix Rose; by Janet and Harley, by Wendy and Jane; by his half-brother John(Mary), by his sister-in-law Sybil, and by numerous nephews and nieces and their families.

He was pre-deceased by his parents James and Virginia Butterfield, infant son Roland, grandson Damon, his first wife Myra, his brothers James and Aidan, and his son-in-law John.

Philip was born in Vancouver, spent his early childhood in Summerland, BC, did a year at Art School in New York, and then, as a young man went north to Atlin, BC and the Yukon. The three oldest children were born in the north. He worked in the goldmines, was a longshoreman on the steamboats of the Yukon River, was a woodcutter, and taught in schools in Whitehorse. In 1955 the family went to Vancouver where he was a schoolteacher until 1963. After four years at graduate school in Seattle he joined the new University of Lethbridge in southern Alberta as a founding member, and remained there as both an administrator and philosophy professor until his retirement in 1989.

The move to the prairies brought a new interest in raising purebred Shorthorn cattle and so in 1970 the family moved to what became known to us all as “The Farm” in Monarch, Alberta. Philip combined his university activities with raising his considerable herd, showing and selling prize cattle all over the world. He did this while also remodelling the family home with his boys, farming the land, and extensively landscaping the property.

Philip remained on the farm to the age of 91, and in 2015 he and Jenifer moved to Victoria.

Philip loved his family; he loved the farm with all the trees he planted, and all the animals he raised; he enjoyed company and solitude, he loved to argue and debate. He always had a project on hand and was still working on one – his “Wall” – with photos and prints of family, animals, scenes, and whatever, until his final days. He died in his sleep at Sunrise Senior Living in Victoria. We would like to thank the staff of Sunrise for their special attentive and loving care to him during the last year of his life.

We, his large, varied, and extended family will so miss him.

AMY WOOLFORD

January 4, 1928-January 29, 2020

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother AMY MARY WOOLFORD, on January 29, 2020 at the age of 92 years old.

Mom is survived by her five children, Trudy (Dennis) Hatt, Jack (Anna) Woolford, Rod (Trudy) Woolford, Lynda (Rick) Smith and Brenda (Frank) Pigat, as well as 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Mom was predeceased by our dad, Kenneth Woolford on July 14, 1999.

Mom was born to John and Edith Olshaskie on January 4, 1928. She was the first daughter born to them, later joined by sisters Eva (Lyle) Vance, and Jean (Kelvin) MacDonnell. She was a tomboy who loved to be outside, helping her dad run their farm.

She met the love of her life Ken at a Harrisville dance, and married him June 18, 1948.

Mom devoted her life to helping Dad on the ranch and raising her five children. In her later years she finally had the time to develop her artistic talents, painting many beautiful pictures and having them displayed in several art shows. She loved family history and spent many hours researching and documenting information.

The ranch was a welcoming place for friends and family. She will always have a special place in the hearts of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her last few years were sometimes a struggle, but she never complained, becoming a favorite resident at St. Mikes with her smile. We would like to extend our gratitude to the staff who treated her with dignity and respect.

The Funeral Service will be held at the South Hill Chapel, 950 Main Street in Cardston Alberta on Monday February 3, 2020 at 1:00 pm. Interment in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Harrisville.
