KENLY

MARVIN DEE, 90, passed away peacefully early Monday morning, September 2nd, 2019 in the Cardston, Alberta hospital. Dee is survived by his eternal sweetheart of 69 years – Lauretta (married January 4th, 1950), their children Marvin (Reva), Terry (Sandy), Sheila (Sidney) Carothers and Debra (Rick) Orchard.

Dad was born November 11th, 1928 to Herman and Susan Kenly of Mountain View, Alberta. Dee was the last surviving member of their family, that included his older brothers, Herman and Kay, his older sister LaDean and younger sister Delois (who passed away at age three). Dad outlived all his Kenly family and ancestors by at least 15 years, so we know there’s a great reunion taking place right now on the other side of the veil.

Dad was a remarkable husband, companion and caregiver to his sweetheart Lauretta right up until his last day on earth, and we know he will continue to watch over our frail and beautiful mom until she is able to join him at their sweet reunion, where she will be able to remember what a remarkable man she married.

Dad was always a good friend, with love and concern for others, whether it was during his time working at the BA Plant near Waterton, as a Realtor and Insurance Agent in Calgary, or his favorite time being his own boss when he and mom started Chinook Tours in Cardston, AB. Those were some of their most special memories, when they spent time together, driving and hosting many of their friends and family on tours across Canada and the United States. Dad was a man of integrity, love, compassion and service. He loves the Lord, his dear wife, four children, 10 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren, more than words can adequately express. Family was everything to him. Our tight knit Kenly family has a special love and bond that will always endure.

Marvin (Reva), Terry (Sandy), Sheila (Sid) and Debra (Rick), are grateful to those at Lee Crest who graciously and loving cared for our dad over the past few years and continue to care for our precious mother Lauretta.

Special thanks to the medical Staff of the Lethbridge & Cardston Hospitals.

A Funeral service will be held in Cardston, AB, West Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (846 -1 Ave West) on Saturday, September 7th, at 11am. Those who wish to meet with the family may do so from 10:00 am – 10:45 am prior to the service. Interment to follow in the Hill Spring Cemetery.

Condolences may be sent to: http://www.legacyfuneralhome.ca

HANSEN

Allen Alexander Hansen, son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Born in Lethbridge, Alberta on November 2, 1925; passed away August 30, 2019 at 93 years of age. Allen was born to, Marry and Chris Iver Hansen living on a lease-land farm in Coaldale Alberta. Shortly after his father’s death in 1930, mother Marry moved to Lethbridge as a single mother of four children. At a young age Allen followed brother Lloyd into the Armed Forces and served as a Seaman on frigates in the Atlantic to the end of WWII. After the war, Allen went to work for Canadian Pacific Railway as a brakeman on the steam trains which were providing freight and passenger service in Canada at that time. Allen worked many years with C.P.R as a Trainman on the Budd Car passenger trains and freight trains servicing the communities of Southern Alberta and British Columbia. A personable guy, Dad enjoyed meeting and helping all the many passengers and friends he met while working on the trains. In 1950 Allen met and married Helen Welbourn in Nelson, B.C. The newlyweds moved to Lethbridge and quickly started their own family with Robert arriving first in 1950, Christine in 1952 and lastly Lloyd in 1955. Dad continued working on the Budd Car passenger service traveling from Lethbridge to Cranbrook, Calgary, and Medicine Hat. In 1960 Allen accepted a C.P Rail transfer and relocated his family to Cranbrook where he and Helen lived for the remainder of his life. Dad retired from C.P Rail in 1985 with 43 years’ service and enjoyed 34 glorious years of retirement. Early in life Allen developed his lifelong passion – GOLF. Both Allen and Helen were long-term members of the Cranbrook Golf and Country Club. Highlights of Dad’s golf life included many trips south golfing in Oregon and California, tournaments in Southern B.C. and Alberta, and getting a Hole-in-One on hole #15 of the Cranbrook course on July 8th, 1993, being witnessed by his long-time golf friend who was also a Supreme Court Judge. One of Dad’s greatest enjoyments was to be out on the golf course with his family. Grandchildren were near and dear to Dad’s heart and many hours were spent entertaining the kids. Dad was very patient with his grand-children and would spend countless hours playing store, checkers, or crib, washing cars, teaching golf – or whatever it took to keep the kids’ content. Great grandchildren came later in life. Fortunately, Dad had the opportunity to meet and spend time with all his great grandchildren. Only days prior to his passing he was watching with interest videos of the most recent arrival at 10 months of age taking her first steps. Allen is survived by his wife of 69 years, Helen; sister Joyce; sons Robert and Lloyd; grandchildren Robert Day, Deanna King (Christine), Tanya Hansen, Tara Hansen (Robert), Alexandra Hansen, Gina Dahl (Lloyd) and six great grandchildren. Dad was predeceased by father Chris; mother Marry; brothers Lloyd and Melvin; and daughter Christine. A funeral mass will be held for Allen Alexander Hansen on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 10:00 am at Christ the Servant Church 1100 – 14th Avenue S Cranbrook, B.C. This will be followed by a light luncheon reception in the church hall at 11:00am and interment at Westlawn Cemetery at 2:00pm. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to all of Allen’s caregivers including Doctors Kevin McIver and Sarah Chesney, Staff at Interior Health, and Care Givers at Joseph Creek Care Village, The Green Home and Columbia Garden Village Ivy House. In lieu of flowers please direct your donations to the Cranbrook Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store, 30 – 8th Avenue South, Cranbrook, BC V1C 2K3 in the name of Allen Alexander Hansen.

Aileen Cecilia Patton

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Aileen Cecilia Patton (nee Pearson) on the bright & beautiful autumn day of September 4th, 2019, peacefully and surrounded by her family who loved her deeply. She is survived by her husband of fifty-five years, William Wallace; her two children, William Russell (Carolyn) & Joanne (Brent); and four grandchildren whom she loved and was incredibly proud of – Dane, Braunagh, Amelia & Isabella. She was predeceased by her parents August & Ida Persson, sister Esther, and brother Bertil. She is survived by her brothers Donald & John, and sisters-in-law Dorothy & Barbara. Mum was the daughter of Swedish immigrants, and was intensely proud and devoted to them. She leaves many in both Canada & Sweden to mourn her loss. She was born in Lethbridge on July 2nd, 1937 and grew up on her parents’ farm near Park Lake. She always enjoyed helping her mother & father on the farm, and knew how to operate a tractor before she could drive a car (and while her friends were working on their tans at the beach, Mum would get even a better tan driving the tractor in a bikini and sun hat). Life on the farm was idyllic, she enjoyed her horses & dogs, and grew-up in a very happy and warm home. Aileen was a gifted student and graduated Valedictorian from Coalhurst High School. She was also an exceptional athlete, and played basketball and baseball throughout Lethbridge County. Aileen’s sights were set on nursing at an early age, and she graduated from the Galt School of Nursing in 1959 with Distinction. Aileen’s thirty-year nursing career took her from Public Health in Fort Macleod, to the Emergency Department of the Lethbridge Municipal Hospital, the Case Rooms at the Banff Mineral Springs & Calgary Grace Hospitals, the Emergency Department of the Misericordia Hospital, and finally as Nursing Supervisor of the Misericordia Hospital. She always made calm from chaos, was always focused on the holistic needs of her patients, and especially loved caring for children and newborns. It was in the Emergency Department of the Lethbridge Municipal Hospital where she met a tall, handsome Irish RCMP constable who had brought in an injured prisoner for care. Dad took one look at the equally tall, athletic, blue-eyed and auburn-haired Swedish beauty in her white-cap and pressed uniform, and immediately fell in love with her (we never knew what happened to the patient). Dad was welcomed into the family immediately, was always considered a son by her parents, and Bill & Aileen were soon married. Mum followed Dad’s career with the RCMP across Alberta, and they enjoyed postings in Lethbridge, Banff, Calgary, Peace River & Edmonton. Mum created an equally very happy and warm home for her own family, and always loved & supported us. In retirement, Aileen enjoyed her garden, travel with her husband across Canada, baseball (she was always a LA Dodgers fan), her neat & tidy home, her incredible Swedish baking, and most of all, her family that was equally devoted to her and loved her beyond description. We are certain she is now in the arms of the Lord, and has joined her parents and siblings around the kitchen table back at the farm, letting them know of her recent adventures, and sharing in warm laughter with her dog Nettie at her knee. Our family wishes to thank the City of Edmonton Fire Rescue Service; AHS Emergency Medical Services; the staff at the Emergency Department of the Royal Alexandra Hospital for their care and professionalism; and especially, Drs. Ricco & Pretty, and Nurse Lisa for the dignity and compassion they showed Mum. Funeral Services will be held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 10037-84 Avenue, Edmonton, on Wednesday September 11th at 1:00PM. Memorial donations may be made to the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation.

Hazel Fong

Our beloved mother, Hazel Fong, of Calgary, passed away unexpectedly on September 4th, 2019. Full of energy, Hazel continued even at her age to defeat all comers at badminton, crossword puzzles and jenga. Our mother was born to Sun and Bow Sim Chuen in Bow Island, Alberta where her grandfather, Chuck Chuen, was a pioneer. Bill and his wife Fay, as a team, made their grain and cattle farming operation a success. Their farm not only provided a livelihood, it also became a source of pride and joy and it allowed them to raise their sons Jack and Wayne with values that stood the test of time. Bill was an avid curler and along with his brother Hugh, represented Alberta in the 1955 Brier. In retirement, he developed a passion for golf. He made a lasting contribution to the Claresholm Community through his volunteer efforts in both the local curling and golf clubs. In recent years, he was honored to receive the Distinguished Lion Award for his lifelong service. Bill often reflected on the almost unimaginable changes in the world since his early years riding a horse to a one room country school house, and would remark that he had lived during the most interesting time to be alive. He also had the good fortune to be born into a community he loved. His many friends brought him such joy in the happy years, and great comfort in the more difficult times. He truly had a life well lived.

Many happy years were spent on our “mini farm”. Fred and Mary moved from the acreage in 1984 over the course of the next years lived in the area of Beaver Mines, Warner and Yuma, Arizona. In his younger years Fred enjoyed traveling with his family throughout western Canada and the United States and continued to do that with Mary until she became ill in 2013. Fred was an avid card player throughout his life and very much enjoyed spending time with his friends either playing poker or crib. He loved to garden was very pleased with his raised bed garden that he had planted this spring while living at the Prairie Rose Lodge in Milk River. Duane “Fred” Jorgensen

1941 – 2019

It is will sadness that we announce the passing of Fred Duane Jorgensen on September 9, 2019 at the age of 78. Fred was born in Cardston, Alberta and was raised Twin River, Alberta. He married Mary Foggin in 1960 and shortly after their wedding they moved to Washington state where he began his studies and apprenticeship in carpentry. Over the course of the next 12 years he built many houses around the Seattle area. While living in Washington Fred and Mary had three children, Mark, Mike and Tammy. In 1972 Fred and his young family moved back to Lethbridge so that he could start his own construction company. Fred built many houses in and around the Lethbridge area. Having grown up on the farm, which he loved and always missed, Fred was eager to have some land of his own. He wanted his children to have a small taste of what it was like to grow up on a farm as he did. In 1975 he purchased 75 acres north east of Coalhurst and built a home for his family. While living on the farm he (and Mary) planted huge gardens, raised wild birds, stocked fish in the pond, raised chickens, ducks and kept some horses to the delight of his daughter. Fred is predeceased by his parents Carl and Helen Jorgensen (nee Peterson), his ex-wife Mary (Jorgensen, Mutter) nee Foggin, and his son Mark Conrad Jorgensen. Fred is survived by his son Mike (Liisa) Jorgensen, Tammy Jorgensen and her husband Eric Thomsen and grandchildren Ty and Anna Thomsen, brother Gary (Betty) Jorgensen, his nephews Grant (Ester) Jorgensen, Ian (Jay) Jorgensen and niece Lesley (Chris) Bunting as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Instead of having a service Fred requested that his loved ones scatter his ashes on the homestead land, that he loved and cherished, in Twin River where he was raised. The family of Fred would like to thank his good friend Tomi Smith of Warner, and the staff of Prairie Rose Lodge in Milk River for taking such good care of Fred over the last several years.

Ellen was born April 14,1929 in Cardston, Alberta to Canada and Louise Sommerfeldt. Most of her preteen years were spent in her beloved Waterton Lakes National Park. The family lived during the summers in a cabin along Cameron Creek by Oil City and moved in the winters to the Waterton town site. The family moved to Vancouver the year she turned 13 and there she graduated from high school and then from normal school. Henry Postman

1932 – 2019

It is with sadness that the family of Henry Postman announces his peaceful passing into the arms of Jesus, the evening of September 14, 2019, at 87 years of age at St. Michael’s Health Care Centre. Henry was born in 1932 near Monarch, Alberta, to Gerrit and Joanne Postman. Their family lived in Lethbridge, Nobleford, and on the farmstead north of Monarch. In 1952, Henry married his sweetheart, Alice Kooy, in Abbotsford, BC, and they raised their family on the farm and also briefly resided in Three Hills and Creston. While in Three Hills, Henry attended Prairie Bible College earning a diploma in Religious Studies. Henry loved the farm, and although this was very important for Henry and Alice, they made time for fun and relaxation. Often the family went on camping trips to the mountains and the Okanagan Valley. They both played piano and sang together making beautiful harmony. Henry enjoyed many years faithfully playing piano and organ at church, directing choirs, and started a men’s quartet called “Noblefour”. His music and his sense of humor was a blessing to many through his lifetime. Faith in God was a central part of life for Henry. He taught the bible to his family around the table and was involved in bible study groups and in supporting the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association to help advance the gospel message he so loved. Henry struggled through many illnesses and hospitalizations while on dialysis over the past 5 years. He learned to persevere and put his trust in God. In the end, the simple words of scripture, prayers and song were an enduring hope and comfort to him. Henry was predeceased by his wife, Alice, and his parents, Gerrit and Joanne Postman, and brother Lewis Postman. He will be lovingly remembered by his sister and brother-in-law, Nettie and Ron Wilson, and sister-in-law, Jean Postman, and their families; his children, Donna, Gerald (Wanda), Dan (Lorna), Ken, Lynne (Ross), and Heather (Paul); his grandchildren, Leon, Ali, Spencer, Jon, David, Melanie, Karson, Kaycee, Amylia, Henry, Jennie, Niko, Bethany, Rebecca, Karen, Sharon, Grace, William, Heather Alice, Craig, Linden, Grayson, Pamela, and Jonathan; his great-grandchildren, Madison, Kaiden, and Dawson. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects from 7:00pm to 8:00pm on Friday, September 20, 2019 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 STREET SOUTH, Lethbridge, Alberta. While ensuring her flock were tended to, she also held part-time jobs including stenographer and library assistant. But her greatest passion was serving organizations that assisted those with developmental delays and disabilities wherever her family lived; including being Chair of the Southern Alberta Community Living Association in the 1980s. She also volunteered her time with many other community organizations, including the Galt Museum, Lethbridge Naturalists, the Helen Schuler Nature Centre and as President of the On Our Own group.

SKIERKA, Joy Ann (née Brister)

Nov. 21, 1971 – Sept. 19, 2019

They say your Mother is always with you.

“She’s the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street, she’s the smell of certain foods you remember, flowers you pick, the fragrance of life itself. She is the cool hand on your brow when you aren’t feeling well, she is the breath in the air on a cold winter’s day. She is the sound of the rain as it lulls you to sleep, the colours of the rainbow, she is Christmas morning. Your mother lives inside your laughter. She’s the place where you came from, your first love, first friend, even your first enemy. But nothing on earth can separate you. Not time… not space… not even death.”

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Joy Ann Skierka at age 47, taken away from us far too soon. Joy loved her family deeply, centering her life around her husband, Tom, and her beloved children Trentan, Shannon (Taliesen Tupper), Allison (Nav Dhaliwal), Jaclyn (Andrew Carney), and Frank. They travelled the world together, making homes in far-flung places from Abu Dhabi to Pittsburgh and from Pincher Creek to Tulsa, having incredible adventures and building memories along the way.

Joy was predeceased by her father, Robert Brister, and is survived by her husband, her five children, her mother, Nieves Brister, her mother-in-law Clara Skierka, her father-in-law Jack Skierka, as well as numerous relatives and dear friends.

Joy’s Memorial Mass will take place on Fri., Sept. 27 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. (958 Christie Ave, Pincher Creek)

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Michael’s Health Centre via the Covenant Foundation. (1400 – 9 Ave S, Lethbridge, AB T1J 4V5)

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to St. Michael’s Health Centre for their support in Joy’s final weeks.

Walter Huff

1923 – 2019

Walter Huff passed away peacefully on September 24, 2019, at the St. Michael’s Health Centre at the age of 95 years, with his family at his side. Walter was born on December 25, 1923, in Morris, MB where parents Henry and Mary (nee Rentz) raised him, his two sisters and three brothers. During WWII, Walter served from 1942 until 1946 as an Armament Technician for 407 RCAF Coastal Command Squadron. He was stationed in England, Ireland, Scotland and Holland. Walter was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion General Stewart Branch in Lethbridge. After the war, Walter married the love of his life, Anne, on June 7, 1950 in Russell, MB. A transfer in Walter’s career brought them to Coaldale, AB in 1963 where Walter and Anne raised their four sons and retired after a career with Canada Post. Walt was a loving and caring person, whose family was his life; from building their lifetime home in Coaldale, to supporting their son’s activities, such as scouts and baseball. Anne and Walter loved to camp with family and friends. Beaver Mines, Beauvais and Police Lakes were regular haunts for them. Christmas and other family get-togethers were important to Walter. It was thrilling for him to hold his family gatherings at the Coaldale Senior’s Centre, and whatever the event, there would always be a rousing game of crib going on. Walter had a strong commitment to volunteering for his community. Since 1985, he was a devoted advocate for seniors, and while he disliked calling attention to his achievements, he was recognized regularly for his selfless contributions. He also made it his mission in life to bring a smile to people’s faces. He always had a new joke or witticism to make people laugh. When he became adept at computer skills, he expanded his repertoire immensely. Walter had an effect on everyone he met. Walter is survived by his four sons Douglas (Deb), Bob (Debbie), Bruce and Brian (all from Lethbridge); sisters Mabel and Mina, and in-laws Lorne, Karen and Lucy. His loving family also includes thirteen grandchildren, Michelle (Dave), Donovan (Emma), Christina (Danny), Mark (Carla), Phillip, (Sherry), Saidee, Brooklyn, Wesley, Jason (Maggie), Meghann (Brett), Sean (Deb), Erin (Mike), and Liana (Brian) and sixteen great grandchildren, Gavin, Caleb, Xander, Merrick, Sam, Phoebe, Elwood, Jaela, Brylan, Eric, Brody, Emily, Justin, Bianca, Olivia, and Rufus. Special thanks to Dr. Steven Low and to those who provided such loving care for Walter at Sunny South Lodge in Coaldale. As well, to the amazing staff and nurses at St. Michael’s Palliative Care unit in Lethbridge, a heartfelt thanks. A gathering will be held at a future date to celebrate Walter’s life and reminisce about our memories of this amazing man. Flowers are gratefully declined.
