Lloyd Anderson

1929 – 2019

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of our father Lloyd Allan Anderson on August 10, 2019. Lloyd was raised in the Carmangay area and farmed until his retirement in 2004 when he moved to Lethbridge. He was an active community member belonging to several clubs and organizations. These included the Lion’s and Mason’s Clubs, a board member at the Seed Cleaning Plant, the Barons Regional Electrical Association, and the Prairie Tractor and Engine Museum. He sought out new knowledge attending seminars and courses to add to his list of skills: carpenter, welder, plumber, electrician, mechanic, and any other trade required by an independent farmer. He enjoyed tinkering with antique tractors, cars and trucks. He was an avid auction sale attendee bringing home boxes of treasures or tractors in various states of repair. He thought nothing of getting up at four in the morning, driving to Saskatchewan, attending an auction sale, driving home and unloading the trailer near midnight, even at 78 years of age.

Lloyd was a generous man and would go out of his way to help anyone out. He expected nothing in return. Not always an easy man to live with, Lloyd none the less was a good provider for his family, worked hard, and possessed integrity and honesty. Lloyd suffered a stroke in his later years which robbed him of his independence and true enjoyment of his retirement years, but he persevered with a stubbornness until the age of 90. Lloyd was predeceased by his wife Gill. He is survived by his four children; Carolyn (David) McCluskey, Simon Anderson (Rolanda Richard), Nancy Anderson, and Stephen (Betty) Anderson, and granddaughters Kiana and Kaitlin. A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00pm, on Thursday, August 15, 2019 at BOWVILLE CEMETERY, Range Road 220, Carmangay, Alberta, with Pastor Al Litchfield, officiating. For those who wish, donations may be made in Lloyd’s name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, Box 2211, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 4K7 or the Canadian Diabetes Association, 204, 2323 – 32nd Avenue NE, Calgary, Alberta T2E 6Z3.

MATTHIES

MRS. TINA MATTHIES, of Coaldale, beloved wife of the late George Matthies, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at the age of 95 years, following a brief illness.

Tina was born in Fuerstenwerder, Ukraine on December 17, 1923. In 1926, she immigrated to Canada with her parents, Heinrich & Maria Goerzen, and six siblings. Her siblings have all predeceased her.

Mom’s family settled on a farm northeast of Coaldale. Their family endured many hardships as new immigrants. After completing seventh grade, Mom went to work to help support the family.

She married her beloved husband, George, in 1945 and they farmed together until his passing in 1972. Together, they had five children: Margaret (Bill) Traber, Lynda (Ken) Rothe, David (Grace) Matthies, infant Laura (deceased) and George (Dorothy) Matthies.

Several years after Dad passed away, Mom moved to Coaldale to begin life on her own. The love of the farm never left her; she would often drive in the country or visit her son’s farms, always keeping interested in crops and cattle. Mom went on to work for Barons-Eureka as a home helper. She traveled the roads of southern Alberta to visit clients—many of whom became lifelong friends.

Mom was an avid volunteer. She assisted at the Coaldale Hospital as well as at her church where she was a leader in Pioneer Girls. She was also on the pastoral care team and visited many homebound members. Mom had a great faith in God.

In 2016, Mom moved to Sunny South Lodge where she resided until her passing.

Mom loved her family, extended family and friends, and she enjoyed many visits with each one.

She is survived by her four children and treasured grandchildren: Mark (Cori) Traber, Michelle (Scott) McJoynt, Stuart (Kari) Traber, Clayton (Nadine) Rothe, Shauna (Dave), Rob (Caylee) Rothe, Rhea (Jarvis) Plesman, Cody (Megan) Matthies, Brent Matthies, Norah Faye (Ryan) Matthies and Jessica Vreeken. She is also survived by her precious great-grandchildren: Avery, Jake & Annie McJoynt; Cameron, Kaitlyn & Shaun Traber; Sydnee & Anna; Lily Rothe and Daxton Plesman, and step-great-grandchildren Dani, Erinn & Carter McRae.

A Private Family Graveside will be held prior to the service.

A Funeral Service will be held at the COALDALE MENNONITE BRETHEN CHURCH, 2114 – 18 Street, Coaldale, AB, on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Gary Burke officiating.

Joan Marion Isberg

(nee Pedersen)

20 November 1940 – 9 August 2019

With saddened hearts we announce the passing of our dear Mom, Joan. Mom was born and raised and lived most of her life in Fort Macleod, Alberta. Graduating from Macleod High School in the Class of ’59, and Mount Royal College in 1960, mom was an active member of the community throughout her youth and adult life. She was a member of CGIT, Jobs Daughters, a life-long serving member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and ACW of Christ Church Anglican.

Mom’s first job after college was with the Canadian Pacific Railway in the purchasing department followed by working for Alberta Transportation in the mid-60s. Mom then went on to own and operate the local Family Dry Cleaners on main street, worked at the Fort Museum and as a RITE operator at the Court House, and finally 25 years as a clerk in the Town Office.

As a supporter of the Arts, mom had a passion for ceramics and painting in her later years and was a member of Allied Arts. She was also an active member of many committees such as the Olympic Torch committee, the Santa Claus Parade, History Book II, and the 1950s school reunions. She was a long-time volunteer with Meals on Wheels and Citizens on Patrol, and loved socializing over coffee with her friends.

Joan was predeceased by her father Svend (‘Pete’) Pedersen, her mother Eva Pedersen (nee Lancaster), and her brother Lawrence Pedersen. She is survived by her son Tim (Oxana), daughter Lori, and grandchildren Eric and Katherine (Jono).

Mom, her parents, and her home were part of the history of the town, and in many ways, it is the end of an era. Mom was a kind woman and a beautiful soul. She will be missed. A memorial service is planned for 21 September 2019 at Christ Church Anglican at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to COP, Meals on Wheels, or Macleod Handi-Bus.

In 1980 Jack joined the St. John Ambulance Brigade Division as a volunteer member. He has been a proud member ever since not only serving as a first-aid member but as well as a retired sergeant in ranking.

Over the years, Jack has been awarded several accomplishments along the way. Many of these have been recognized provincially for his dedication to volunteerism in his community and surrounding areas. MUELLER

FRANCES ELAINE MUELLER (née Meikle) passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Leduc Community Hospital on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at the age of 78 years.

Besides her beloved husband, Peter, of Lethbridge, Elaine is survived by her son, Kyril, his wife Hevin and their children Adreus and Kyssara Mueller of Sherwood Park; daughter Alison, her husband, Randy, and their children Leighton and Cosette McDonald of Calgary; and her daughter Celeste Mueller of Calgary; as well as older brothers, Giles and Lorne Meikle of Toronto and their families.

Elaine was born in Edmonton, Alberta, on June 30, 1941 and died in Edmonton August 24, 2019, freed from 11 years of suffering with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). When she was in grade two, Elaine decided she was a teacher and a dedicated teacher she became, earning a B.Ed. in Physical Education and a B.A. in Classics at the University of Alberta. Elaine practiced her profession in Edmonton, Nelson, B.C., Calgary, and Lethbridge, at first in Physical Education and later in Home Economics. She also taught Driver Education with AMA and Social Dance at Lethbridge Community College (LCC).

Always an eager student, Elaine satisfied her curiosity by taking summer classes in Seattle, and Boulder in the United States and, Oxford and St. Andrews in the U.K. In Lethbridge, she enjoyed courses at LCC in cooking and sewing. These courses produced garments the family was proud to wear and many meals they were delighted to eat.

As a teacher, Elaine loved her students, especially those who struggled. Believing learning did not take place only in classrooms, she coordinated a ceramics club. Believing in professional development, she played an active role in the HomeEc Council and the CTS Council. Believing a solution to every problem could be found in a book, Elaine became an avid reader of non-fiction.

The family thanks Lucy, Brittany and Sheilah, her Home Care Aides, for their dedication, friendship and service over the past three years, and extends a special thank you to Dr. Roland Ikuta for his generous help and support over the past eleven years.

The Prayer Service will be at ST. MARTHA’S CATHOLIC CHURCH – 355 Columbia Blvd. West, Lethbridge, AB on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at 7:00 P.M. with Deacon Michael Pollard officiating.

BRAUN

CORNELIUS “CARL” BRAUN, of Calgary, passed away at South Health Campus in Calgary, on Monday, August 26, 2019 at the age of 79 years.

Carl is survived by his three children: Robert Braun of Hinton, Kelly Braun of Calgary and Norman Braun of Hinton; six grandchildren Douglas and Justin Braun, Elex and Karlyn Willms and Arturo and Arianna Gonzalez; and two great-grandchildren Shelly and Viktor. Carl is also survived by his brothers: Peter (Margaret) Braun of Grimshaw, George Braun of Eckville and Bill Braun of Fort Macleod; sister Katharina Thomas of Brooks as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

Carl was predeceased by his parents, infant daughter Sheila Mae Braun, and five brothers: Abe (Marion), Jake, John, Henry and Dave Braun.

I do not consider today, a day of mourning. It is merely a day of reflection and a day to lay to rest, what once was. This, obviously is no longer someone’s husband, father, granddad, uncle or brother, but merely the ashes of what once was all of those things and more.

Some like to think he is in heaven, others, the next realm, or plain of existence. Whatever we want to believe… believe this. He is in a much better place and probably much happier and finally pain free. We’ll all miss him and I would like to think he’s here watching and probably happy about the simplicity of all of this. All we can do now is remember what once was as we scatter the ashes of what no longer is.

At Carl’s request, a Private Family Service will be held at a later date.

PRIMACHUK

ROSE LILLIAN PRIMACHUK (née Palmarchuk), beloved wife of the late William Primachuk, passed away peacefully at St. Michael’s Health Centre on Monday, August 26, 2019 at the age of 89 years. She lived an amazing life.

She is survived by Dennis (Bette) Palmarchuk (Tammy & Scott); Donna (Barry) Obermeyer; Lori (Len) Marinos (Alyssa & Mark); Willie (Terry-deceased) Palmarchuk; Pamela (Ross) Caffyn (Evan & Amanda); Dean (Paula) Palmarchuk (Mackenzie, Kahlan, & Reed), and other extended family.

Rose was born in Hardieville, AB on February 6, 1930 to Alexander & Helen Palmarchuk. Her father immigrated from the Ukraine in 1913 to labour in the coal mines. The youngest of four, her immediate family included her brother, Alex Palmarchuk (deceased), and her sisters, Helen Makarenko and Mary Palmarchuk (also both deceased). Rose lived her entire life in Lethbridge. She graduated from Lethbridge Collegiate Institute in 1948. Three years later, she married Bill and together they shared 33 years of marriage before his untimely death in 1984.

Her working career started with the City of Lethbridge Assessment Department—a 21 year tenure that lasted up to 1969. Nine short months after retirement, she accepted a position at the University of Lethbridge as the Executive Secretary to Vice President of Campus Development—for an additional 20 years!

She began her world of travel soon after she married her railroad man. They embarked on trips that took them to Niagara, Montreal, New York, California, Texas, Florida, Alaska, Caribbean and the USSR. Later in life, she continued her adventures and visited Australia, New Zealand, China, Hawaii, Thailand, Scotland, and England and many more.

Rose will always be remembered for her absolute love of music—both playing it and promoting it. This love stemmed directly from her Ukrainian heritage. She spoke Ukrainian at home and learned to read and write it fluently. She was introduced to music at a very early age, singing and dancing on the stage of the Ukrainian Hall, all dressed up in colourful Ukrainian costumes. Rose’s first instrument was the mandolin, followed by the piano, but it is the violin that she will be most remembered for. She joined the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra during its inception in 1961 at the encouragement of her brother Alex—her music mentor—and she went on to play with them for an incredible 55 years. Rose was extremely giving of her time and talent, volunteering in countless organizations which gave her much satisfaction and allowed her to truly make a difference in so many lives. Her favorite motto of the Symphony Women’s League: “The richest child is poor without music”.

The important things in life are often overlooked. In looking in retrospect at our family and upbringing, it clearly shows how proud our parents and grandparents were of the family. I’m sure we can hardly image how much prouder they are now seeing the successes of their offspring and the upcoming successes of their great-great grandchildren, and great grandchildren. In looking at that pride, WE can reflect on the important teachings that were instilled in all of us. We were taught to be helpful and caring. Taught to share and be respectful. Taught to get along and remember we are from a proud upbringing.

We will miss you dearly Aunty Rosie.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at ST. AUGUSTINE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 411 – 11 Street South, Lethbridge, AB on Thursday, September 5, 2019 at 1:30 P.M. with Reverend Erin Phillips officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kiwanis Music and Speech Arts Festival, c/o Lethbridge and District Music and Speech Art Festival Society, #4B, 740 – 4 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, T1J 0N9 or online at http://lethmsf.org

Randall Frank Dennis Blacker

1953 – 2019

With deep sadness we announce the passing of “Randy” Blacker, at St. Michael’s Health Care Centre on August 29, 2019, at the age of 65 years following a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Randy is survived by his brothers Richard (Loreen) and Norman (Tina); sister-in-law Doreve, and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents James and Doris (Batsford) Blacker and brother Don.

Randy was born and raised in Lethbridge. After high school he graduated from NAIT Civil Engineering Program. He was employed by Alberta Transportation as a project manager, responsible for building and maintaining roadways and highways in Southern Alberta. When that job was privatized, he continued with Torchinsky Engineering until illness forced him to quit.

Randy was a quiet humble fellow with a heart of gold, willing to literally “give the shirt off his back”. Randy enjoyed golfing for many years before health concerns curtailed his play, but he still managed to follow sports closely, particularly hockey and football. He was a passionate supporter of the Montreal Canadiens and Minnesota Vikings, attending many of their games. His memory of statistics relating to sports teams and athletes was amazing.

He was a talented, generous man, very independent, who shunned the spotlight, preferring to direct the attention to others. His positive attitude was especially notable considering the ongoing health struggles he encountered. His humorous stories of “everyday life” that he wrote on the computer using one finger, were always a delight to whoever read them.

At Randy’s request, his body was donated to further research for Parkinson’s Disease. He was a patient of Deep Brain Stimulation for 16 years providing data to neurology research.

The family would like to thank the staff of St. Michael’s Health Centre for the years of care they so dedicatedly provided. Randy asked for no funeral service.

In memory of Randy, donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Association of Alberta, #120 6835 Railway Street SE, Calgary, Alberta, T2H 2V6.

His passion for fastball stems from his family, the Rabbit brothers, also known as the Lavern Blues and Crying Head brothers. Sluggers have been a team for 15 plus years – they started when Barry was about 15 years old. Our original 6 team members consist of Kristy, Dez, Joe, Mario, Matt and Barry. They started the team and have been together throughout the years,- players have come and gone and today Sluggers family includes Titus, Danielle, Carmen, Chelsea, Hank, Justin, Nico, Shawn, and Rhonda. Our right fielder (Barry) was a very confident player he never felt pressure in pressured games he did what he had to do defensively and offensively, playing together all these years we know each other inside and out to the point we call out each other’s plays, before it happens hence the time Barry was up to bat and Dez told some of the players “he’s gonna hit down third and say Aah”. Well that’s exactly what happened, Sluggers have always been loyal and confidant in each other, we just wanted to play, “you can say we’re family”.

Barry enjoyed spending time with family, especially camping and BBQ’s with mom and dad Martin & Crystal CR and family. Barry always brought his mansion along with him wherever he camped and loved all kinds of music. He was caring, loving, kind-hearted, outgoing, and overprotective of his loved ones, a peacemaker and got along with everyone, always making new friends welcoming everyone to his home and many loved to be around his presence.

Barry really loved his wife Alisha, never leaving her side, always encouraging her to try hard and making sure she was good, never left her out of any family gatherings, also did everything together. The only time they were apart is when they had business to do but other then that they had to always be with each other. His sister Vishura had nicknames for them like “Minne soup & Barry soup” Vizzy would call us”. Also, can’t forget about his children Lucy lou, Lukes, an Shiloh (Barry & Alisha dogs) he loved his dog Lukes very much and would call him “Barry Jr” or “his boy”. He really loved his other family just as much as he loved his. Barry love playing ball with his brothers (baseball) and basketball when he had the chance to; he also loved the outdoors like camping, fishing, boating, going on adventures, cruising and really loved his music of course.

HOWELL

Sept. 2/58 – Aug. 31/19

C. ERMINE HOWELL (née Eccles) passed away peacefully at her special Glamping home in King Arthur Lakefront Resort, on Saturday, August 31, 2019 at the age of 80 years.

Ermine is survived by her husband Harold Howell; children Julienne (Daniel) Dyck, Suzanne (Michael) Heggaton and Joanne (Darrell) Peters; grandchildren: Tammy, Terry, Allan, Alyssa, Andrew, Stephen (Josie), Johnathon and Sarah as well as numerous great grandchildren that she loved dearly. She is also survived by her sister Beryl Brannigan (Eccles) and nieces and nephews in Wales.

Ermine joins her Mum, Sarah Eccles and Dad, Cecil Eccles; sisters Cynthia Millington (Eccles) and Sheila Jones (Eccles).

On the evening of her passing, there was a wicked thunderstorm with lighting and rain. We figured they met Mum in Heaven and proceeded to have a party with their favorite song Cherokee Nation (Indian Reservation) by Paul Revere & The Raiders (1968).

Ermine was born Sept 2, 1938 in Flint, North Wales. She fell in love with her soul mate Harold Howell in 1955 and they married on August 27,1958. Harold enlisted into the British army in 1958 and became a Welsh Guard. While stationed in Germany in 1962, she became pregnant with twins, and went back home to delivery them. Then in 1964, she returned to Wales from Germany for the birth of her last child. They had a perfect family with three girls. Ermine was trained in pediatric nursing and loved what she did.

The family immigrated to Canada in 1975 and started our new lives in Gimli, Manitoba. In 1977, the family moved to our forever home in Lethbridge, Alberta. Ermine started working in Narnia Daycare with Jean Staudinger. She was instrumental in the lives of so many children and the parents, she truly loved all her children. In 1982, Aslan Daycare was opened and the staff from Narnia made the move to Aslan. Ermine loved being with the children; her strength and unconditional love for all of her children was evident in the family atmosphere that she inspired daily at Aslan. Her staff were very important and she wanted everyone to feel special and be able to talk to her. She loved sharing her knowledge not only with the staff but also with the parents.

She fought so many battles with cancer and conquered them. This time, the cancer was terminal. She handled this battle with a strength and determination. Our families had to time to spend with her, there was no regrets that she didn’t know how much she was loved.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. with Barb Roycroft officiating. Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery, with a reception back at Cornerstone.
