Joycelyn (Joyce) Noreen Duncan

July 25, 1931 – April 30, 2018

If you remember me,

I will be with you always.

For every time you think of me,

I will be right there in your heart.

It is with great sadness that the family of Joyce Duncan, announces her passing on April 30, 2018. Joyce fought a valiant fight with cancer and died with the grace with which she lived her life. Her spirit is carried on by her children, Mark (Sue), Kim (Lorie), Tracy (Rick), and Lake (Anita). She is also survived by ten grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, two siblings, and an extended family of dear friends and acquaintances. Joyce was predeceased by her parents, Margaret and Charles Russell, her husband, Robert (Bob) Duncan, her daughter, Bonnie, her brother, Freeman, and her sister, Edith.

Mom, Gramma, GG, Aunty, Joyce was an original. She loved celtic music, bagpipes, shopping, decorating, cooking, fancy shoes, gardening, baking, red wine, dog walking, renovating, cooking shows, hard work, helping others, and angels—each and every one of you. Joyce was unique in that she measured the success of her life, by her devotion to loving and caring for others. Joyce was happiest when she was making other people happy. Whether it was baking something yummy, sending a card, bundling a package of treasures, Joyce always found a way to touch the hearts and lives of others. While it was a joy to receive a delicious banana loaf, a surprise to receive a musical card, or a delight to open a package of goodies, Joyce’s true gift was that she made each of us feel like the most special person in the world.

Joyce’s selfless determination to care for others can be linked to her sense of exactitude in living life. In her view, life was not an ordinary pursuit; rather, it was through the pursuit of everyday ordinary activities that one’s life was extraordinary. Some would say she had a work ethic, but she had, more accurately, a life ethic. She made a habit of working hard every day. Her persistent efforts and sacrifice allowed her to raise a large family when times were lean. Joyce, alongside her husband, Bob, braving all weather and life conditions, ran a successful renovation and siding company. Along the way, as there is in life, there were obstacles. Some days, Joyce had no idea how she was going to do it, but she always got it done. With the ups and downs of life, Joyce found joy in the ups and courage during the downs. Of lessons learned from Joyce, the most powerful is that success—in family, life, and work—requires hard work, persistence, sacrifice, and most of all, loving what you do, and loving those you do it with.

While the sun has set for our beloved, Joyce, let each day moving forward be graced with the light and warmth she brought into each of our lives. To honour our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and dear friend, live life well. Treasure each day and love each other. Our time on this earth is short, but our memories long. Remember Joyce, because she always remembered you. She loved each and every one of you—dearly. Remembering Joyce will be easy, missing her will be difficult. While the days ahead are sad ones, remember to smile when you think of Joyce, because, most certainly, she is smiling back at all of us.

Please join family and friends in celebrating Joyce’s life at Christensen Salmon Generations Funeral Home, 703 – 13 Street, North, Lethbridge, AB., at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 12, 2018. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Canadian Cancer Foundation.

Richard Kelly

1931 – 2018

Mr. Richard Kelly passed away peacefully in his sleep, at Chinook Regional Hospital on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at the age of 86 years.

Richard was born on April 17, 1931 to his late parents, Amelia Lucinda (Biggs) and Evan Harold Kelly in Elnora AB.

Always a passionate card player, Richard started playing cards at a young age with his 4 siblings: Elden Kelly, Marion (Gordon) Watson and his late brothers Evan and Kaye (Francis) Kelly. He loved to boast that he taught all of his children how to count by playing “Cribbage”. He thoroughly enjoyed his online game of “Hearts”. He relaxed by having coffee with friends and discussing news or sports. Richard loved driving long distances and never found a road trip he didn’t enjoy.

Early in his career, he worked at the Imperial Bank of Commerce as a bank teller, then later throughout Western Canada as salesman. At age 36, he returned to school to earn his BEd at U of A and started teaching Business Education classes in Calgary. He always stressed the importance of education to his family and students.

A long-time teacher (and snappy dresser) Richard believed in demonstrating the importance of coordinated business attire for his students — even matching his belts, shoes and choice of pen.

Richard will be sadly missed by his beloved wife, partner and best friend, Grace McPike-Kelly. After retiring, they moved to sunny Lethbridge and thoroughly enjoyed their busy days. When faced with any challenge, they always resolved it together, smiling and enjoying a good laugh.

Richard was a loving (and very proud) father to his children: Laurie, Janet (Clint) Cameron, Michael (Natasha) and Katherine. He adored his 3 grandsons: Jonathan (Elaine) in Toronto, Brandon and Nathan Cameron in Calgary. Richard was amazed by his 3 granddaughters: Alexandra, Keira, and Mikayla in Calgary. And, equally delighted by his 3 great-grandsons: Harrison, Owen and Bennett in Toronto. His large extended family plus many dear friends are mourning their loss of a dear, kind man.

Please join his family for a Celebration of Life at 2:00pm on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 St. S, Lethbridge, AB. Refreshments to follow.

If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Richard’s memory to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, Box 2211, Lethbridge, AB., T1J 4K7 or their website at http://www.heartandstroke.ca/get-involved/donate or a charity of your choice supporting youth education.

Brenda Wieland

1952 – 2018

It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Brenda Kay Wieland on May 2, 2018 at the age of 66, in Lethbridge. Beloved wife of the late Brian Wieland, she is survived by her loving daughters Sherry Wieland (Doug Kemsley), Melanie (Kevin) Winters, and Kimberly (Steven) Wise as well as precious grandchildren Mason, Jada and Ashton Winters. She is also survived by brothers Russell Silsbe (Judie), Lynn Silsbe (Sharon), Larry Silsbe (Gloria) and Barty Silsbe, brother in-law Les Wieland (Laurie), sisters-in-law Gloria Wieland and Debbie (Brent) Dustin, numerous nieces, nephews and many other relatives.

Besides her husband, Brenda is also predeceased by her parents, Lawrence and Martha Silsbe, sister Sharon Silsbe, in-laws Martin and Helen Wieland, brother-in-law Edward Wieland and numerous aunts and uncles.

Brenda was born in Lethbridge and grew up in the Barhill area with four brothers and one sister who passed away when Brenda was six years old. Growing up with four brothers, she learned how to be tough and resilient at an early age. She loved time spent with her mother cooking, baking, canning, gardening and helping out with the many jobs that needed to be done on the farm. She also enjoyed time outdoors riding her bike and swimming in the canals with her dad and brothers always nearby.

Brenda married her high school sweetheart Brian in 1970 and started a family, with Sherry arriving in 1970, the first grandchild born on both sides of the family. At 18, Brian and Brenda were young parents and often said they all grew up together. Melanie was born in 1975 and Kim completed the family 15 months later in 1976. Brenda was a devoted mother who stayed at home to raise her daughters and was constantly on the road driving them to sporting activities, 4-H, church activities and anywhere else they needed to be, often being mistaken as their sister. She also helped out on the farm providing meals at harvest and maintaining her flower beds. When the girls were a bit older, Brenda worked in a variety of retail jobs, managed a video store and most recently worked in registries.

Family was the most important thing in Brenda’s life including her cherished grandchildren. Though life handed her very difficult health issues she persevered through them with a strong will to live. She and Brian enjoyed visiting friends, going for drives, playing games, going on holidays and time spent with their grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00pm on Friday, May 11, 2018 at SOUTHMINSTER UNITED CHURCH, 1011 4 Ave S, Lethbridge, AB, with Reverend James Grunden, officiating.

A Private Family Graveside Service will be held in the Archmount Cemetery.

Flowers are gratefully declined. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, 119 14 St NW #200, Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6.

Carmell Jean Bokvist

Beloved daughter, sister and auntie, Carmell Jean Bokvist born October 19, 1972 in Calgary, Alberta will be sorrowfully missed by loving, devoted parents Gary (Darla) and Geri (Rob), faithful sister Cassandra (Curtis) dedicated niece Paynter, loving brother Ian (Alivia) special niece and nephew Kenz and Cullan.

Though from birth it seemed her life was fraught with sickness, pain and torment; Carmell was the “Come Back Kid”. In spite of her many health challenges and the seemingly endless roadblocks in her life’s path, she never gave up, she fought to survive, lived her life to the fullest possible until her very final moment; Wednesday May 2nd, 2018 Foothills Hospital Calgary, Alberta.

Carmell was a music and movie buff. Everything from Bergman and Bogart to horror flicks, musicals and indy movies. Listening and dancing to music was freedom and happiness for her: Fleetwood Mac, Hall & Oates, Duran Duran and Billy Idol to name a few. Talented cook, baker and excellent at sewing as well as crochet; many have been recipients of her fabulous crocheted afghans.

She had a special passion for the outdoors; Carmell had a tremendous admiration and respect for nature, all manners of flora and fauna (land, sea and sky). Road trips and camping with her dad were cherished, special times; she looked forward to participating in the horseshoe tournaments that could last into the wee hours.

Never forgetting a birthday or special holiday, buying cards and gifts for all happily and with great generosity. Often admonishing her sister for waiting until the last minute to mail out greeting cards (I promise I’ll do better).

Quick witted and a good sport Carmell would giggle in reminiscence of her own verbal faux pas and humorous “slips of the tongue”. Warm, funny, fierce but gentle, a stalwart confidant, a best friend, spectacular sister, auntie and devoted daughter; Carmell will be forever loved and remembered. “Well, there’s nothing to lose and there’s nothing to prove, well, Dancing a-with myself” -Billy Idol-

Love you always and forever

Mom, Dad, Sis and Bro

Peace for you at last

In lieu of flowers please donate in Carmells name to your local Humane Society, Ducks Unlimited, Birds of Prey Centre or plant a tree

McKENZIE

It is with great sadness that the family of MRS. JOAN McKENZIE, beloved wife of the late Dr. Hugh McKenzie, announce her peaceful passing on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at the age of 96 years.

Joan is survived by her son, Ross (Deborah) McKenzie of Lethbridge, her daughters, Carol (Iain) Wilson of Edmonton and Carmen (George) Graham of Rainier and her eight grandchildren, Kyle McKenzie (Tara, and their children, Xander, Mannix and Milana), Colin McKenzie, Christina McKenzie, Andrew Wilson, Scott Wilson, Catherine Davies (Braidy, and their children, Sage and Wynn), Rob Graham and Erin Graham.

She was predeceased by her parents and by her loving husband, Hugh.

Joan was born on November 2, 1921 in Yorkshire, England and was raised in Pocklington. Joan trained and worked as an accountant in York during World War II. She met a Saskatchewan farm boy, Hugh McKenzie, a Flying Officer with the RCAF stationed nearby. They were married on December 11, 1943. After they were married, Hugh completed his tour of duty with Bomber Command. On each bombing mission, Joan counted the number of planes that left and returned. Hugh survived three plane crashes. On one mission, Hugh’s plane did not return and had to crash land on the coast of England. This was a very stressful time in Joan and Hugh’s lives, but resulted in a very close and loving relationship between them, which lasted throughout their marriage.

Hugh returned to Saskatchewan in September of 1945. Eight months later, Joan was able to join Hugh at the family farm near Sintaluta, Saskatchewan. They lived in Saskatoon while Hugh attended the University of Saskatchewan. Once he completed university, the couple moved to Indian Head to work at the Agriculture Canada Experimental Farm. In 1951, they transferred to Lethbridge where Hugh began his lifetime career working at the Lethbridge Research Station.

Together, they had three children, Ross, Carol and Carmen. Each were very welcomed and loved additions to their family. Joan and Hugh had a very happy relationship and enjoyed raising their family in Lethbridge. Sadly, Hugh died in an automobile accident in 1979. Joan remained living in Lethbridge and cherished her close relationship with her children, eight grandchildren and, over the past six years, her five great-grandchildren. Joan’s family was her inspiration and she was so proud of each and every one. Joan was a long-time member of Southminster United Church.

At Joan’s request, a Private Graveside Service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation, 960 – 19 Street South, Lethbridge, AB T1J 1W5, the Brooks & District Health Foundation, 440 – 3 Street East, Brooks, AB T1R 0G5, or to a charity of your choice.

GLOBA

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Peter Globa on April 26, 2018. Don was born on June 25, 1951 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He attended St. Michael’s Elementary School, St. Paul’s High School, and graduated from E.D. Freehan High School. Throughout his life, Don’s two great passions were music and football.

After playing for his high school team and later with the Saskatoon Hilltops, there was more football at the University of Saskatchewan where he also obtained a degree in Music Education, enabling him to share his passion for music with hundreds of students across his stellar career in both concert and jazz band. Don was recognized nationally on several occasions for guiding his band students to the top levels in the country.

After retiring as a full time teacher, he continued teaching part time for several years and enjoyed that immensely. His love of football also carried on with completed dedication to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. His support for the Riders never wavered as he followed every game, play by play.

Don was an avid reader, and always seemed to have at least one book on the go. In between reading he would try to catch up on T.V. series he had recorded. Cooking was another past time he truly enjoyed in his retirement, often trying new recipes he found on the internet. Summer time gave him the chance to pursue fishing in the beautiful rivers and streams of southern Alberta, an activity he thoroughly enjoyed.

Don was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Anne Globa, and his wife, Pamela Perry-Globa. He leaves behind his faithful companion, Jake, the latest of the many dogs who were lucky enough to have had Don as their owner. Don’s friendliness, generosity and sense of humor will be missed. He was one of a kind, who lived life large and enriched the lives of those who had the privilege to know him.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lethbridge and District Humane Society.

HOFFMAN, Helmut (Hal) Bernhart

July 21, 1934 – Elmwood, Manitoba

May 6, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Helmut (Hal) Bernhart Hoffman passed away peacefully on the morning of May 6, 2018 at Rockyview Hospital in Calgary, AB at the age of 83 years.

Hal was born in Elmwood, MB to Wilhelm and Helena Hoffman (nee Heinrichs). One of nine siblings, Hal grew up on the family farm near Halbstadt, MB and later near Dominion City. As a boy, he received his early schooling at a German school, but farm duties prevented him from completing high school. As a young man, Hal worked on the farm in the summers and did railway maintenance during the winter.

With the intent of becoming a farmer, Hal trained as a mechanic, thinking this a useful skill on the farm. His training took him to Calgary where, by chance at a local dance hall, he met his life long love, Marie, whom he married in Winnipeg in 1960.

Hal’s studies sparked a keen enthusiasm for learning and a desire to impart his skills to others. While working full time to support his family, Hal went to night school to earn his high school diploma with the goal of becoming a mechanics instructor. In 1964, Hal and Marie moved the family west so Hal could to take a teaching position at the Lethbridge Community College (LCC). Early in his tenure at LCC, Hal furthered his own education, obtaining a bachelors degree and later, a masters degree, in vocational education from the University of Alberta. Hal was popular with his students and a respected member of the LCC faculty and he eventually served as the faculty union president. After his retirement in 1991, Hal and Marie travelled the world and hosted visiting couples in their home through the Lethbridge Chapter of the Friendship Force creating many happy memories and friendships.

Hal will always been remembered for what he gave back to his family and his community. Hal volunteered countless hours of his time and put his skills to good use through the Rotary Club, Lethbridge City Police Commission and the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. True to his farming roots, every spring and summer, Hal, along with Marie, expertly tended a large backyard garden which sustained their family and brought them much joy. To the delight of his children, Hal transformed the garden into an ice rink in the winters. Hal was a resourceful and talented metalworker who crafted items for his home, friends and his church. His appreciation for music was cultivated through singing in both the Good Shepherd Church Choir and the Men’s German Chorus, the latter of which gave Hal the great pleasure to use his German.

Hal will also be remembered for his passion for politics which led him in 1972 to run as a candidate in the federal election for the New Democratic Party. He was a frequent and articulate contributor of letters to the editor in the local Lethbridge paper on political issues of the day. Mostly, Hal will be remembered by his family as a loving father, grandfather and husband who offered unfailing support and guidance to his wife, children and grandchildren. He was immensely proud of the accomplishments of his children and his three granddaughters, Maddison, Kristen and Zoey.

Left to mourn Hal are his son Rob Hoffman and his wife Ivy of Calgary; daughter Susan Duncan and her husband Darren; daughter Judi Hoffman and her husband John Wall; granddaughters Zoey of Vancouver, and Maddison and Kristen of Calgary; and siblings, Albert Hoffman (Lena) of Altona, Anita Braun of Altona, Rudy Hoffman (Karlene) of Winnipeg, Harold Hoffman (Marge) of Mississauga, Irene Braun (John) of Winnipeg, Dennis Hoffman (Jeanine) of Winnipeg, and Marvin Hoffman of Thailand. Also surviving him are his in-laws, Betty MacGillivray of Stanley, NB, Bill Moss (Donna) of Cross Creek, NB, and Rosemary Ingraham of Arrowwood, AB; and by many nieces, nephews and good friends. Hal was predeceased by his wife Marie in 2016 after fifty-five years of marriage; brother Irwin Hoffman; brother-in-laws Gordon Ingraham, John MacGillivray, and Jake Braun.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home.

Beverley Paterson

1940 – 2018

Bev Paterson, beloved wife of the late Gordon Paterson, passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening May 8, 2018 at the age of 77 years.

Born in Lethbridge, Bev was an active young person playing basketball, the bagpipes, modelling and earning her spending money babysitting and demonstrating the hula hoop on Saturday mornings at Woolworths. Bev attended the University of Alberta graduating with a nursing degree. Interrupting her studies was a blind date with Gordon and upon returning to Lethbridge after graduation, they were married. Once Bev became a mother she retired her nursing cap to focus on her three children Jan, Eryn and Bruce. Bev and Gordon loved their time with their family. Years of summer vacations at Christina Lake topped her list of favourite times. Early morning skis on a lake of glass for the kids and an afternoon of tanning on the boat for Bev made those holidays so special. Skiing in Whitefish, golf weekends at the cabin in Waterton and travel with Gordon to visit kids away at school filled her heart with great joy.

While raising her family, Bev cultivated her love of giving to her community through a myriad of roles including: the Lethbridge YMCA, the Allied Arts Council, the Lethbridge Community College, the Chinook Regional Health Authority, the South Alberta FASD Network, the Steve Fonyo Cancer Foundation, Skate Canada, the Southern Alberta Winter Games…to name but a few.

Bev will be remembered for her incredible warmth, love, caring nature, dedication to friends and her strong commitment to her causes. Bev’s legacy continues through her family and through those she and Gordon ‘adopted’ by love. She will be deeply missed by all of them.

A private cremation will take place this week and a celebration of Bev’s life, for family and friends, will be held at a later date.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, Box 2211, Lethbridge, AB., T1J 4K7 or call 403-327-3239 or donate on their website at http://www.heartandstroke.ab.ca.

RICHARD (RILEY) PICKETT

October 3, 1955 – May 10, 2018

A funeral is not a day in a lifetime,

it is a lifetime in a day!!!

Beloved husband of Colleen Julie Pickett passed away in Calgary on May 10 2018 at the age of 62.

Riley is survived by his 3 daughters: Amanda Rae Pickett (or Minnie as he called her) of Taber, Hannah Emily Pickett (Logan Fournier) of Edmonton, and Jamie Dawn Lesburg (Zakary Lesburg) also of Edmonton.

Riley had 4 grandchildren: Bradley Riley Pickett, Kalista Bailey, Madyson Bailey and the newest addition Chevy Lesburg. Riley was also blessed with a great-grandson: Kash Holt-Wilton.

Along with his father Floyd Pickett and his loving sisters Shanon (Marv Harwood) and Karen (Mary Harrison) he had numerous nieces and nephews.

Riley took great pride in his career within the oilfield trucking industry. He tried to live his life in such a manner as to create a framework for his girls to build upon. He was a very charismatic man who loved camping, fishing and enjoying his family and friends.

Riley was deeply passionate about his faith and tried oh so hard to get his girls to follow. He would often have deep talks with them about his philosophy of life and his perception of the mysteries that our journeys hold.

Always the trickster, Riley would put spiders in Hannah’s shoes, or apply double-sided sticky tape to the fridge door, or tease Jamie with the nickname of “James” every chance he could. Even more memorable was the time he used shoe laces to tie a loose bumper back onto Amanda’s car because he figured that she was not being “hickster” enough just living in Taber. His best invention of all, however, was to zip-tie the toilet seat down so he would not fall off… all in good fun.

Riley was a huge presence in many, many lives and he will be missed! But lets remember that he hasn’t really left us, he has gone to his heavenly home and will always be closer than we know.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday May 14, 2018 at THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS, TABER STAKE CENTRE, 4709 50 Ave Taber Alberta. Friends are welcome to meet with the family from 10:00 to 10:45 am prior to the service at the church.

Immediately following the service, there will be a luncheon with a video and memorial tributes by his daughters in the Church Cultural Hall.

Interment in the Taber Memorial Gardens.

RUSSELL, CHARLIE

AUGUST 19, 1941—MAY 7, 2018

Known to many as “the bear’s best friend,” this celebrated and beloved rancher, photographer, author, naturalist and ultra-light pilot passed away in Calgary despite every possible effort by the Foothills ICU staff to save him. Charlie is deeply missed by his loving partner Melodey Wood, his siblings Dick Russell (Colleen Calvert), Gordon Russell and sister Anne Raabe (Peter), by his granddaughter Zoe Russell (daughter of his son, Anthony) and Zoe’s mother Chris Russell and grandmother Margaret Hynd. He is mourned also by nephews Jonas Dodd (Magali Bailey), Tim Raabe (Barb) and niece Sarah Russell (Jeremy Bryson). He will be missed by sister-in-law Valerie Haig-Brown, friend and confidant Beth Towe and by former partners Sandi Twiss, Maureen Enns and Irina Ikruglyakova. He was predeceased by his parents Andy and Kay Russell, his brother John and son Anthony.

The son of renowned conservationist Andy Russell and wife Kay (nee Riggall), and grandson of the famous pioneer outfitter and naturalist Bert Riggall and wife Dora (nee Williams), Charlie was literally born and raised to be a leader in wildlife conservation. As youngsters, Charlie and his brothers roughed it through Canada and Alaska in 1960 to assist Andy Russell with his groundbreaking film, Grizzly Country. After studying photography in New York, Charlie took up ranching on the family place, Hawk’s Nest, in the heart of southwest Alberta grizzly country. More and more of his time was devoted to conservation issues such as the Waterton Biosphere Reserve initiative, but the closest thing to his heart was defending bears, for as this bear of a man once growled, “If it hurts the bears, it hurts me.” Eventually, he decided to give up ranching and devote himself to disproving two myths then prevalent in our times: “1. that bears are unpredictable and 2. that they are inherently dangerous if they ever lose fear of people.” His researches led in the 1990s to a 13-year period of living in close proximity with wild grizzly bears and Kermode (black) bears on Princess Royal Island and Khutzymateen, BC, and then Kamchatka, Russia. In Russia he and then partner, the artist Maureen Enns, were instrumental in funding an anti-poaching program and creating a Brown (grizzly) bear sanctuary centered on a cabin they built on Kambalnoye Lake on the Kamchatka Peninsula. Charlie obtained a number of orphaned brown bear cubs from the Russian authorities, taught them to fish for char, defended them from predators and successfully got them into hibernation. These efforts resulted in documentary films with PBS and BBC and a number of books, including Grizzly Seasons. Charlie was heartbroken in 2002 when he discovered the bears he had protected were slaughtered by poachers while he and Maureen were back in Canada, fund-raising. More recently, challenged by old-school biologists who questioned his methods, he concentrated on convincing the public that” …the problem is with us, not the bears.” His work and example has shifted the public perception of bear human interactions more towards Charlie’s point of view, to the great benefit of bear conservation in general. But Charlie was also a mentor to a new crop of conservationists and biologists, whose thinking about not only bears, but all wildlife has been transformed by his ego-free gentle examples in the wild. A celebratory rendezvous to honour Charlie will be held at Hawk’s Nest, the family ranch, from 10:00 AM onward, September 2, 2018.

Joshua is predeceased by his parents James and Celina Twigg, his son Lane, his brothers: Leonard, Tony, Charlie, and Sheldon, his sisters: Doreen, and Mary-Anne. His sister in law, Kim Twigg, his niece Lacey Twigg, and his great niece, Brielle Twigg.

Forever a Cowboy, Josh was raised on his parent’s ranch on the Blood Reserve. He was an accomplished Steer Rider, Bull Rider, Bareback Rider and Saddle Bronc Rider. He rode bulls for 23 years in various Associations. Highlights of his rodeo career include: winning the year end and finals championships in the Chief Mountain Rodeo Association, the Indian Rodeo Cowboys Association, and the Blood Reserve Rodeo Club in the Steer Riding and Bull Riding Events. In his first 2 years of rodeo, he held the record for winning every single rodeo and finals in the CMRA in the steer riding event. His family and rodeo family were also very proud of him when he rode the bulls Jazz and Little Jazz. Joshua has won so many rodeos over the years that they are too numerous to mention, and Josh would never mention them. Humble and kind, he took every victory with a huge smile on his face and bashful eyes, never one to boast, or brag. He practically gave away every trophy he ever won, and just went on to the next for the love of the ride.

Never one to sit still for very long, Joshua has held various jobs over the years, most recently, he worked for his sister Carolyn, helping her to care for their disabled nephews Riley and Dylan, who he had a close bond with after the passing of their father, mother, sister and niece. He has also worked for Bouvry Exports (3 yrs.), Medical Transportation (8 yrs.), broke horses and did ranch work for Melvin Wadsworth, worked at Albert’s Gas Bar, Balog Auctions, and spent 13 years driving school bus for the Blood Reserve School Bus Co-op.

Joshua held family above all, and did all he could to make sure those he cared about most were well looked after. He never turned down a request for help, and would often show up to his older siblings homes and do things like take out the garbage, mow the lawn, and clean up the yard, all without being asked, and never asking for anything in return. He will be sadly missed for his huge smile, kind eyes, and helpful heart. Joshua loved his rosary and rarely missed an opportunity to pray to Our Blessed Mother. Therefore, the family invites everyone to attend a Wake Service at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB, on Sunday, May 13, 2018, from 6:00 P.M. – 11:00 P.M. He is survived by his brothers & sisters (Gilbert & Emelda Black Water, Norbert & Cecilia Black Water, Jimmy Red Crow, Rosie First Rider, and Stella Red Crow & Peter) as well as his close & loving family (Dorothy & Leonard Day Rider, Virginia Eagle Bear & Mervyn) and his numerous friends, relatives & extended families throughout the country.

Andy was born on January 27, 1940 in Cardston, Alberta and was raised in the true Traditional, Cultural, and Spiritual ways by his father (Bill Black Water) & mother (Rosie Red Crow) in the community of Standoff, Alberta. Throughout his life, a determination to succeed in life was driven by his desire to be complete as a human-being who survived in two worlds and his never-ending determination to teach and spread his universal values of honesty, responsibility, respect, courage, trust, understanding, compassion, forgiveness, strength, humility, wisdom, unity and most of all “LOVE & TRUTH” towards each other. His lifetime goal was to stand as an example to others who are standing at the crossroads of making decisions on their future and the road chosen by him is not the only road, but it is a proven road that can serve as a guidepost and example for others to follow. He once said, “We would not be where we are today if not for our ancestors’ and elders’ teachings which simply put was to “Never Give Up” in our promise to our families, our people that we must continue to make a positive difference in their lives”.

He was baptized and raised as a Catholic who attended the Saint Mary’s Indian Residential School in his initial years and graduated from the Saint Anthony’s College in 1959 in the City of Edmonton, AB. He challenged the sports world in many categories and excelled in basketball while playing for the St. Anthony College team leading them to numerous championships whilst attending school there. He dedicated the last 16 years of his life helping those in need especially the formulation of a community group called “Standoff Vision in Motion” whose mandate was simple, which was to promote unity & togetherness by hosting various gatherings, social events, and feasts for the community.

Acceptance of the two worlds (native & non-native) brought about his adopting both as a reality and a necessity for survival in the modern world. Together with his wit, humor and story telling that he conveyed his many messages. His teachings and understanding of treaties, traditional territories, governance and knowledge was due to his true upbringing in his Cultural/Traditional/Spiritual ways. It was his legacy in evidence as he walked and made a trail for all to follow till his last few days and his hope that the teachings, stories and experiences he went though be passed on to the next generations to come. He was also a long-time member of the sacred Horn Society who continued as a mentor and an Elder to all in the Blackfoot territory as well as embracing the many other forms of religion and worship. His legacy, last memories and last words that he asked of us was to “Take care of each other, help each other, support each other, share with each other, and most of all Love Each Other”.

SNIDER

Our beloved friend, JAYNE CORINNE SNIDER, died peacefully after a short illness on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at ther Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge. She was 55 years old.

Jayne was born on November 28, 1962 in Camrose, Alberta to Leroy and Anne Corrine Snider. At the age of five, like so many other Albertans with disabilities of her generation, Jayne was admitted to the Michener Centre in Red Deer where she resided for the rest of her childhood and into her young adult years. In 1991, just shy of her 29th birthday, Jayne found a new home as a founding member of L’Arche Lethbridge, as well as a new place of work with Quest Support Services.

Despite her tiny stature, Jayne leaves a great legacy of a better society and better people as her life’s work and calling. She was a trailblazer in Lethbridge in the movement toward greater inclusion for people with disabilities. She herself gave no weight whatsoever to any of the differences that others use to divide us, but regarded each person she met equally as a friend. By her humble example, she taught us that the essence of being human is nothing more, and nothing less, than loving with our whole hearts and being fully present to each other. Jayne never spoke a word, and took pleasure in the very simplest things of life, yet she had the ability to profoundly touch the heart of each person who met her. We are all better people for having known her.

Jayne’s memory will live on in the hearts of many friends here in Lethbridge and young people from around the world who lived with her and whose hands she held over the years. She will be especially missed by her long-time friends, Virginia and Margaret, to whom she was affectionately known as Bear.

Jayne was predeceased by her grandmother, Helen Anne Jackson (“Nanny”) and her mother, Anne Corinne Snider. Mourning her passing are her father, Leroy Snider; her sister, Leanne (Francis) Thomsen and children, Ben (Katelynn), Keihli (Ian), Krysta, and Julie; and her brother, Brian Snider, and children, Jesse and Hannah.

A Visitation will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME – 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB on Thursday, May 17, 2018 from 9:00 A.M. until 11:30 A.M., with an informal service beginning at 10:00 A.M.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2405 – 12 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. with Father Kevin Tumback, celebrant.

Jayne will be laid to rest at a later date in the Valleyview Cemetery in Camrose, AB.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jayne’s honour to L’Arche Association of Lethbridge, 240 – 12C Street North, Lethbridge, AB T1H 2M7.

Mrs. Sheila Ryan

Mother, Grandmother,

Sister, Aunt

1934 – 2018

Mrs. Sheila Ryan of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Ed Ryan, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Friday, May 11, 2018, at the age of 84 years.

Sheila was the youngest of eight siblings born on April 13, 1934 in Lethbridge at the Galt hospital – one of the Galt babies – to Charles and Louisa (Appleton) Hulley. A competitive basketball player at Central School, she possessed inner strength and unwavering support for others that continued throughout her life. Following her school days, Sheila lived in Calgary with her sisters, and worked as a typesetter for the Royal Canadian Air Force. Then, in 1954, she began her career as a copyeditor for CHEC radio and later moved to CJOC. Through radio, she met and married Ed on May 15, 1956. Career highlights included working with remarkable people, being challenged creatively, and the many awards she accrued for creative copywriting excellence from the Radio Bureau of Canada – many of these for the Canadian Crime Stoppers Association. Sheila advocated to have CJOC become the first radio station in the Selkirk chain that negotiated the use of word processors in a copy department, supporting writers and alleviating heavy workloads. She also recalled fond memories of teaching a journalism course at Lethbridge College. Throughout the years, Sheila was a tenacious defender of women’s pay equity in broadcasting and human rights, and fought against gender stereotyping. Together with her husband, Ed, they raised their five children to stand up for their beliefs and principles.

In the mid-1970s, Sheila initiated the family’s move to an acreage east of Lethbridge. The acreage was her paradise on earth. It was here that Sheila and Ed were able to transform a piece of the southern Alberta prairie into an oasis and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the country. Sheila enjoyed the time and space to garden, entertain family on special occasions, and share her love of horses.

Outside of work, Sheila was passionate about reading, writing, cooking, and following current events. She also loved her favourite pets, Kelly, Otis and Stevie. She enjoyed our large family gatherings and inspired and supported her children and grandchildren to follow their dreams.

Sheila is survived by her four daughters and one son, Robin (Glenn) Bright – Amy and Erin, Louise Ryan – Zoey, Susan Ryan, Kerry (Jed) Snatic – Bridget and Madelaine; son Sean Ryan – Dezmond; sister Betty Kasperski; nephew Tom (Val) Hulley – Alexandra, Connor, and Dylan; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Shelly Dawn Bassett officiating.

A private family interment will be held in the Mountain View Cemetery.

HARRIS

Dr. William Gordon “Bill” Harris, DDS, 62, from Magrath peacefully passed away Friday, May 11, 2018 in Lethbridge after a nine-month battle with cancer.

Born September 2, 1955 in Ottawa, ON to Lewis Harold Harris and Deon (Strate) Harris, Bill, spent his younger years in Ottawa but moved to Lethbridge as a teenager where he graduated from LCI. Bill went on to receive his undergraduate and dental degrees from the University of Alberta.

Soon after beginning his lifelong passion in dentistry, Bill was sealed to his eternal love Wendy Lynn Baker, in the Cardston Temple on a typical windy southern Alberta day. Bill and Wendy eventually planted roots in Magrath where they raised five children: Matt (Casey, RDH) Harris, DDS, Brett Harris, DDS, Melia (David) Lewis, RDH, Seth Harris, and Taite Harris.

Bill had many passions in his life but family, dentistry and his faith were the greatest. Dr. Harris was a dentist who always strove to provide the best care and was always looking to teach. At 19, Bill taught the gospel to the people in the Switzerland-Geneva Mission as missionary for the LDS Church. With an unshakable faith in his Father in Heaven, Bill knew he’d be able to see his family again and that his body would be made whole after this battle.

Bill is survived by his wife, children, four grandchildren and siblings. He’s preceded in death by both of his parents and his brother Ronald.

Bill loved life. Outside of dentistry and the gospel, Bill never missed a chance to watch his Blue Jays, catch a hockey game or take to the golf course with his wife. He loved learning and family history.

Lastly, Bill loved his sleep. And for those who knew him, 10:30 was as sacred. So, to end, we say, “it’s 10:30 somewhere, Dad. Rest well and we’ll see you soon. We love you.”

A Graveside Service will be held at 12:00pm on Friday, May 18, 2018 in the Magrath Cemetery.

SCHERLOSKI

1937 – 2018

RONALD BERNARD SCHERLOSKI, beloved husband of the late Marjorie Scherloski, passed away peacefully with family by his side at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Monday, May 14, 2018 at the age of 80 years.

Ron leaves behind his son, David (April) and children, Ronald, Bryan (Kelsey), Lauren (Andrew), Keith & Jordan; daughter, Joan (Bruce) Brownell and children, Jenna (Matt) Waters, Kimberly (Carl) Hansen, Michael (Heather) Brownell and great-grandchildren, Emily Brownell and Amelia Waters. Ron also leaves his siblings, Wilma, Clara, Lorraine (Victor) Kowalke, Margaret Sparrowhawk and Gordon (Mary-Ann), his uncle, Mike, various cousins and numerous nieces, nephews and their respective families.

Ron was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie, parents, Louie and Pauline, brothers-in-law, Danny Sparrowhawk and Clifford Prince, sister-in-law, Mary Prince and great-nephew, Tyler Soke.

Ron was born and raised in the Langenburg, SK area on a farm. Ron married Marge on October 6, 1959 and they moved to Alberta. They lived in Lavoy where Ron managed a grain elevator. He left Lavoy and began his journey in the hotel business with the Heisler Hotel. They took a leap to Lethbridge where he bought the York Hotel, started Royal Taxi and even went into the restaurant business with Sherlock’s Den. Ron also managed the Alec Arms Hotel for a period of time. They moved to Bow Island when he purchased the hotel there and then to High Level where they bought the Hotel and a Motel. In 1980, they settled back in Lethbridge. Ron had learned every skill there was from caring for the hotels, so he started his business, Ron’s Repair. He built a new home and later purchased the home that him and Marge lived in until now, along with some apartments and did some amazing renovations. David started Sherlock Homes and the two of them spent many years working together. Around 2013, Marge needed Ron’s care, so he began spending more time with her and slowly retired. Ron’s main priority now was Mom, his grandchildren, crib games, time at the Casino, coffee with his buddies and never saying no to running errands for David. Ron and Marge loved to travel; Saskatchewan, Hawaii, Mexico, Las Vegas, Wendover, a camping trip across Canada in 1985 and camping with his children. Right until the time of his passing, Ron loved to watch and encourage his children and grandchildren if they were painting their homes and doing renovations. You could also find him in a hole that had been dug for a new house, plumbing the initial services.

Ron will be dearly missed by all those that knew and loved him.

Ron’s family wishes to thank the paramedics who responded to his home on May 10 and helped get him safely to the hospital, to the staff in the ER Dept., and especially to the staff in the ICU. There were many moments of hope in his last few days where Ron was able to communicate his desire to fight and carry on, but ultimately the years had taken their toll and it was time to say good-bye. The nurses and staff in the ICU showed Ron and his family compassion, dignity and respect in his final days. THANK YOU.

A Celebration of Life will be held at SOUTHMINSTER UNITED CHURCH, 1011 – 4 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Eva Stanley officiating.

Ron will be laid to rest at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Gerald, Saskatchewan at a later date.

Helen L. Duff (Duffy)

February 11, 1944- May 16, 2018

Lethbridge got a little duller on Wednesday May 16th when Duffy passed away at the age of 74 years.

She is survived by her husband of (almost) 55 years, Roy H. Duff. He is lost without “The Warden” here telling him to “Stick It in His Ear”. Mom was a strong woman which is how she survived raising her sons Rick, Dean and Shane. She loved her daughters-in-law Shannon and Judy. She was the proud Grandma of 6 and a Great Grandma to 1.

Many people will remember Duffy’s fun personality when she worked at St. Mike’s, it was never boring when Duffy was on shift. She loved watching her TV shows, playing lotto 649, dancing with Roy and she was known to enjoy a beer.

Duffy claimed she wasn’t the “Royal Bank of Canada” so it’s no surprise she didn’t want a service. As usual the boys aren’t listening.

The family of Duffy would like to invite everyone who knew her to celebrate her life on Friday June 8, 2018 at 5:00pm-8:00pm in the MEMORIAL HALL OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION- 324 Mayor Magrath Dr S, Lethbridge, AB T1J 3L7.

In lieu of flowers please consider donating to St. Michael’s Health Centre in her memory- Room 3C60, 11111 Jasper Avenue Edmonton, AB T5K 0L4, or email foundation@CovenantHealth.ca.

HADLEY

It is with great sadness the family of Gail Alberta Hadley (nee Smith) announces her passing on May 17, 2018 after only one day at St. Michael’s Palliative Care Unit in Lethbridge. She was 79.

Mom was born in Calgary on March 26, 1939, but she was raised in Berwyn, AB. She married a banker and that set her on a course of numerous transfers that would take them to Calgary, Red Deer, Claresholm, Camrose, Wetaskiwin and Ft. Macleod.

The simple things in life made Mom happy. She enjoyed her crosswords, gardening, curling, golfing – oh, how she loved to golf – and playing her piano. Mom always had time for a coffee and loved visiting with her friends, especially her life-long friend, Arlene, with whom she shared many memories and much laughter.

Most of all, Mom loved her family. She said all she ever wanted was to be a Mom and she was a great one. She loved visits with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and her brothers and sisters-in-law. She was also happy to spend every day with her furry best friend, Ceba.

In 2011, illness led her to Lethbridge to live with her youngest daughter. After an initial diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, she beat it for 6 years and made the most of her time, appreciating every day.

Mom will be dearly missed by her children, Gene Evans of Lethbridge, Randy (Jackie) Hadley of Hamilton and Deb Hadley of Lethbridge. She is also survived by her grandchildren Aaron and Cameron Evans of Lethbridge, Amanda (Steve) Everett of Calgary, Nicholas Hadley of Calgary, Jessica and Lauren Wallace of Hamilton and her great-grandchildren Ciel and Odin. Mom is also survived by her brothers Art (Ella) Smith of Spruce Grove and Douglas (Janet) Smith of Berwyn.

Mom was predeceased by our Dad, Jim, and her parents, Art & Dorothy Smith.

Even though Mom spent the last years of her life in Lethbridge, she always considered Ft. Macleod home. Keeping with her desire that no one make a fuss, Mom asked to have a family service with no funeral.

For those wishing, in lieu of flowers, Mom would appreciate any donations being made to the Ft. Macleod Handibus Society, Box 881, Ft. Macleod, AB T0L 0Z0. Condolences can be sent to condolences@edensfuneralhome.com
