Giulio Carmine DiRocco

April 7, 1925 – March 2, 2018

GIULIO CARMINE DIROCCO passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Chinook Regional Hospital, on Friday, March 2, 2018 at the age of 92 years.

Born in the town of Castel Castagna in the Province of Teramo in the Abruzzo region of Central-Southern Italy, on April 7, 1925, he was the seventh and youngest child of Rosina and Rocco DiRocco. As a young boy he grew up working on the family farm with his siblings. At the tender young age of 21 he married the woman who would remain the love of his life, Teresa Angiolina DiRocco. After marriage he worked in various trades including installing telegraph wire, working in a steel mill and coal mining in France. He knew that in order to try to create a better life for his family he would have to leave his beloved Italy and immigrate to Canada. He boarded a ship from Naples to Halifax and subsequently made his way to Lethbridge, arriving in April, 1952. It would be nine months before his wife and three small children would join him in Lethbridge.

During the winter months, he was able to secure employment mining coal at Number 8 Mine in Lethbridge, and during the summer months, he worked as a laborer for the City of Lethbridge. Giulio, like the rest of his fellow countrymen, was not afraid of hard work. He later managed to guarantee himself a fulltime job with the City of Lethbridge where he would work his way through the ranks from laborer to a foreman position in charge of the sidewalk surveying crew. He would retire from the City of Lethbridge after 35 years.

Giulio was a founding member of the Lethbridge Italian Canadian Cultural Centre and was instrumental in the completion of the new building that currently stands today. He served as President for many years and was very passionate about his role in the Club. It was one of his proudest achievements.

Music was a huge part of Giulio’s life and is something he enjoyed immensely. His passion for it was greatly evident in his impressive music collection, which he loved sharing with his friends and family. He was an accomplished (self-taught) accordion player and had a gift for playing any song by ear. He was also masterful in playing his hand-carved antique wooden concertina, much to the delight of his whole family.

He had a love for Italian cuisine and his own homemade wine. He had a great enthusiasm for life. He was a wonderful husband, devoted father and loving grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered for his constantly amusing and sometimes long-lasting storytelling.

Giulio was predeceased by his beloved wife, Teresa Angiolina DiRocco.

Together, they had nine children, Rosanna, Piera, Dario (Barbara) DiRocco, Tina (Wally Chubaty) Filbey, Rita (Gerald) Varzari, Diana DiRocco. He will be sadly missed by his twelve grandchildren, Craig, Laura, Christopher, Alyssa, Devin, James (Gina) Jamie (Cody), Danielle, Kristin, Jordan, Matthew & Eric, and his eight great-grandchildren, Deacon, Brooklyn, Kashtyn, Dominic, Luca, Briella, Siena and Dredan.

He was also predeceased by his infant son Pietro DiRocco; his daughters Anna Trotter and Julia Bluekens; his parents, Rosina and Rocco DiRocco; his brothers Domenico, Pietro and Guido and his sisters Sophia, Anna (Nina) and Nella.

A Funeral Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. with Deacon Ray & Ellen Wagner officiating.

Should friends desire, contributions can be made to the Crohns and Colitis Foundation – 3100 – 246 Stewart Green S. W., Calgary, AB T3H 3C8, in memory of his daughters Anna and Julia.

Martha Silsbe

1916 – 2018

Martha Eleanor Silsbe of Lethbridge, AB, beloved wife of the late Lawrence Edward Silsbe, passed away March 1, 2018 at the age of 101.5 years.

She was born in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, September 14, 1916, to Carrie (Schei) and Albert (AJ) Anderson. AJ came to Canada to the Bowville area in 1916 to help with harvest running a threshing machine, and then returned to Minnesota after harvest, bringing his family – Bella, Clarence, Margaret, Alvira, Alvin, Marvin, and Martha with him to the Bowville district the following spring, where they eventually started their own farm. The family had planned on returning to Fergus Falls, burying Jalmer, the first born and Bella there, but instead remained at Carmangay. Growing up, she helped her sisters on the cook cars that fed the farm workers, and learned cooking, canning, gardening, and playing piano. Martha and Lawrence Silsbe were married October 18, 1939. The first two children were born in Carmangay, AB and the rest were born in Lethbridge. They started farming in 1942 in the Barons area, later moving to Picture Butte in 1969 but continuing to farm. Martha had a large garden, with tomatoes, corn, potatoes etc, beautiful sweet peas, petunias and gladiolas, her favourite. Her laundry was hung on Monday mornings, Tuesday was ironing day, and there was a day for shopping for supplies and groceries. Mornings at the Silsbe household involved coffee cooked in a stainless-steel coffee pot on the stove, and her favourite radio host turned up loud enough to hear, while she went about her chores. In the evenings she watched Jeopardy. She belonged to the Royal Purple for many years, and after her children were grown she did “baby sitting” – overnight managing of the Piyami Lodge part time. She and Lawrence loved to go for drives to visit and have coffee with their children whenever they could, still feeling their deep farm roots. She moved to Lethbridge in 2009.

Martha was predeceased by her husband Lawrence on March 25, 1997, their daughter Sharon Lee in 1957 in a tragic car accident, daughter-in-law Iris (Schnell) in August 22, 2000, their son-in-law Brian Wieland on March 16, 2014; her parents and all her brothers and sisters, and also their spouses.

She is survived by Russell, Judie (Gibb) Nathan; Lynn, Sharon (Warnock), Shannon Cej (Jeff), Ryan, Stacey Deering (Monty Gaur), Shaena Brouwer (Gil), Shalise, Shara Salter (Cory), Brienne Shimek (Paul); Larry, Gloria (Hawley), Shawn, Kayla; Brenda Wieland, Sherry, Melanie Winters (Kevin), Kimberly Wise (Steven); Barton, Brandon, Caitlin (Baier), Matthew; Great grandchildren: Baillie, Logan Cej; Aidan, Ava Deering; Evan, Roan Brouwer; Skylar, Daxton, Harper Salter; Greyson, Sawyer Shimek; Jada, Mason, Ashton Winters; Della Silsbe.

The crib board was never far away from the coffee pot and even the grandkids all loved to play with Grandma. She would ask “So what do you know?” And then snicker to herself. Martha was well known for her roast beef, hot mustard, baked beans, and buns. The cookie jar was always full for those that stopped for coffee. The Norwegian treat lefse was one of her favourites, and all the children and even grandchildren make it for special occasions. Lefse was murmured several times over the last few days…

Family and friends are invited to join the family for a time of fellowship and refreshments at 12:00pm on Monday, March 12, 2018 at the SOUTHMINSTER UNITED CHURCH, 1011 – 4 Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta.

A Private Family Graveside will be held at the Archmount Cemetery.

COLEMAN

The family of GRACE COLEMAN is sad to announce her passing after a very brave fight on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at the age of 74 years. She went peacefully surrounded by her family, and did everything her way to the very end.

Grace was the third of seven children born at home in rural Northern Ontario to Chester and Edith Coleman on June 18, 1943. She grew up with her family on their small homestead and always had many fond memories of those times. In 1985, Grace moved to Lethbridge and after the birth of her only grandchild, made it her permanent home. She worked many, many years in the retail industry and loved her many customers that she served and grew

to know over the years.

Grace is survived by her partner Neil Frandsen; her three daughters Val Twain (Fernando), Veronica Twain (Larry) and Viola Twain (Sean), and her beloved grandson Cleve Miyashiro (Micha), who was the apple of her eye. Grace is also survived by her six siblings, Morris (Thelma), Marg (Ed), Cliff (Ruth), Edie (Vic), Ron (Deb) and Glenn (Suzanne).

Grace was so excited when Cleve was born and she became a grandmother. She was so proud of that fact that she had a grandchild and was the best grandmother ever to Cleve. Mom also had many things she loved to do in life. She could play cards for hours on end if she could find someone to play with; at family gatherings, after the big meal was cooked and the dishes cleaned, out came the games and cards and we would all play for hours. We all have such great memories of those times. In her retirement, Mom joined a couple of cribbage clubs and absolutely loved playing in their weekly tournaments. She was a formidable cribbage player and won many of those weekly tournaments. Mom also loved gardening and making things grow. Camping and cookouts were also some of her favourite things.

For those of you that knew Grace, you will understand what we mean when we say that she was a force to be reckoned with. Mom was decisive yet open-minded, firm yet fair and always loved us girls no matter what crazy stunts we tried to pull. She said what she meant and she always followed through on her word. It was very hard to put one over on her – not like we didn’t try, but we usually failed. Thank you for that, Mom!

In 1998, Mom went through her first struggle with breast cancer and fought bravely and fearlessly, ultimately coming out on top. For nearly 20 years she remained cancer-free; however, it returned recently and she fought once more, and was cancer-free at the time of her passing. She was courageous in her most recent health challenges and was a strong woman who never complained. In fact, her biggest concern was that her being sick would put everyone else’s life in turmoil. Mom, for such a tiny lady, you had a big, strong, unflinching reality about what you were going through and you were tough as nails.

We wish to thank everyone who helped our family through that last long day in the hospital. The ER staff, Dr. Buck and nurse Dawn – you guys were awesome, thank you. The staff of 4B, you guys were kind and compassionate during Mom’s very brief stay, and we truly appreciate that. We also wish to send a huge thank you to the ICU nurses and Dr. Morley Wong. Nurse Charity, you are a rare gem and the care and attention you showed our Mom will never be forgotten. Dr. Wong, thank you for your kind and honest guidance, and for letting us honour mom’s last wishes. We also want to thank Uncle Ron and Aunt Deb who were with us that entire last day; you guys were our rock and we are so thankful for your presence when we needed you more than any other time in our lives.

Per Grace’s wishes, there will be no service. The family will be holding a Private Celebration of Grace’s Life and scattering of her ashes.

It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of our precious ANDREA TARA DAY CHIEF-CREIGHTON, who was called home to join the love of her life Charles Davis on February 26, 2018. Beloved mother to Brendon Hudson Noah Eagle Bear, Michael Jett Eagle Bear, & Michaela Andie Eagle Bear whom she loved dearly. Tara is survived by her parents, Lucille (Eugene) White Quills and Andrew Winold (Benita) Creighton. Father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wayne & Christine Davis

Tara was the apple of her dad’s eye. She was a mischievous and treasured little girl who left lasting memories by the many pet names given to her by various relatives and friends, to name a few, “terrible Tara” and “little hutterite”.

Tara was the only child with her father for many years. Together they travelled to many rodeos and would be with her dad when he was farming and attending to the livestock. She loved swimming, bowling, family barbeques, going to the show, attending many different functions with her dad. Their bond was very special and strong and was her dad’s number one fan when he competed at rodeos. Dad made sure Tara went to Church where she developed a strong faith with her father and began her journey doing her Search and making her Cursillo. She and Charles made their “Live-in” together in 2013. After Charles’ passing, her Mom and Grandma June took her to Lac St. Anne to help with her healing process. Tara made her Mom & Dad proud when she completed her education. When Tara was unable to work, her Mom & Dad supported her in every way.

Tara received her education in Fort Macleod, Catholic Central High School and Reeves College & Lethbridge College. She received a Health Care Certificate and Accounting and Payroll Certificate and was employed at the Blackfoot Womens’ Lodge as an Executive Assistant/Receptionist.

After being injured in an accident that left her unable to work in physically demanding jobs, Tara focused on being a mother and homemaker. We will not forget her kind, generous nature with her witty sense of humour and she developed many strong ties with everyone she met. The happiest moments of her life was the birth of her three special children, Hudson, and the twins, Michael and Michaela who were doted on by both grandparents receiving many helping hands from family.

Tara was a big sister to her siblings, developing special bonds with Eugene (Cary Brown), Jade, Jeanelle, Mary and Angela, also strong bonds with Hank, Gordie, Lydia, Jace, Lennie & Alfreda. She was always there when they needed her. Tara loved to spend time with her nieces and nephews. She spoiled them with hugs and kisses and often referred to them as “my baby”. She would tell her children, siblings, nieces and nephews that she believed in them and to continue to try hard.

Tara’s cousins and friends have fond memories of time spent together, visiting, sleep overs, cruising around, listening to music, attending different functions and eating at her dad’s favourite restaurant, “Shanghai”. She would treat everyone and put it on her dad’s tab. As a toddler her mom and grandma “Piiksii” sewed a traditional outfit for her. Tara attended one pow-wow and was spooked by the other dancers’ outfits. One Halloween she dressed up as a hutterite and earned the nick name little hutterite. During the cabbage patch trend, Tara and her cousins hid the dolls in the closet after watching a scary movie so they could sleep. Her brother Cary Brown and Jade, when visiting with Tara, would often joke with Tara about the menu which was always hamburger helper and rice.

Her interests were playing aggravation and dice with her siblings, and watching Investigation Discovery and keeping up with the current events.

Andrea Tara is survived by her grandmothers: June Day Chief & Teresa Wadsworth. Uncles: Eugene (Lorna) Creighton, Dale, Ernest, Preston Day Chief, Sonny (Terri) Wadsworth, Delray (Nadine) Wadsworth. Aunts: Rosebelle Yellow Wings, Frances Little Light, Rosalyn Creighton, Karen (Tom) Day Chief, Glenda Day Chief, and Toby, Shelly Wadsworth, Verona (Marvin) Tail Feathers. Brothers: Eugene, Cary, Craig, Sheraton, & Darcy, Sisters: Jade, Janelle, Mary & Angela, Step Siblings: Cassie, Lydia, Hank, & Gordie. Nieces & Nephews: Martina, Stryder, Straduss, Zane, Nicholai, Hayden, Ayla, Madison, Anika, Lorali, Kenden, Traven & Stanley. God Parents: Kim Creighton & Dale Day Chief

Tara came from a large family: Creighton, Day Chief, Crop Eared Wolf, Small Face, Tail Feathers, Scout, Big Sorrel Horse, Hunt, Shade, Knife, Wadsworth, Heavy Runner, McDonald, Heavy Head, & Blood

Predeceased by paternal grandparents, Sam, Flora Creighton, Maternal grandfather, Melvin Wadsworth, Aunties: Olive (Eugene White Quills), MaryAnn Smith, Teresa Mae (Mac) Big Throat, Uncles: Leslie (Lubby) Day Chief, Myron Wadsworth, Melvin (Sonny) Creighton, Adrian Creighton .

TYSON

BRIAN FERGUS TYSON was born in Nottingham, England on July 19, 1933. He went to rejoin his beloved Jill, after a valiant battle with illness, in Lethbridge, Alberta on March 5, 2018.

Brian was a child in World War II, with all that implies. On the one hand, it meant the stress of aerial bombardment, and of a disrupted formal education caused by frequent house-moves; on the other, being transplanted, from the city of Nottingham where he was born, to the English countryside, nurtured in him an inextinguishable love of Nature, particularly birds–an interest he sustained–and which sustained him–throughout his life. In old country houses like “Bromptons” and “Shepherd Elmers Cottage,” Brian learned to love the sights and sounds of the Essex and Suffolk countryside.

Years later, memories of his boyhood caused him to begin a long poem called Bromptons, which, although unfinished in words, was completed in music by his friend and composer John-Paul Christopher Jackson, whose “English Rhaposdy” it became. Brian wrote poetry all his life, and had poems published in numerous journals. The British countryside was also responsible for the birth of Brian’s interest in drawing and painting, from the first crude sketches of aircraft and birds on the flyleaves of books, to his later efforts at landscape and bird painting in Southern Alberta.

The family’s move to London at War’s End in 1946, introduced Brian to wider interests. He began acting in School Plays at Wandsworth School, several “House Plays,” plays with local community theatre, and every annual school play, until the year he left, when he was awarded the School Acting Prize. He also acted with the Central Stage society. The University of London provided Brian with an Honours degree in English, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, and a Doctorate in English Literature, in which he studied closely the early manuscripts of Bernard Shaw. Brian produced numerous articles on Shaw, and three books published by two university presses.

Brian’s interest in theatre was at all levels: he wrote a number of plays, several of which won provincial prizes, two of which were broadcast on radio, two performed and one published; and he continued to perform in University and community theatre. He directed plays both at Christ’s College, in London, where he taught for seven happy years, and in Lethbridge, where he directed three plays prior to the emergence of the University Department of Dramatic Arts, a department he was instrumental in founding. Brian was on the advisory board that chose as the first member of that department David Spinks, whose friend Brian was proud to be until David’s death in 2011. During his time in Lethbridge Brian adjudicated drama festivals in the city, and in Medicine Hat and Red Deer. After his retirement, he was, for five years, Theatre Critic of the Lethbridge Herald; and still continued a Theatre Blog up to the time of his death.

His love of music and folksong manifested itself in his guitar-playing and singing, usually with his beloved wife of 54 years, Jill, whom he first met during a folk-group rehearsal in London, in 1957. Together they played and sang in hospitals, schools, and churches, at weddings, and at funerals, and to entertain the young and the old.

Meeting and marrying Jill changed his life completely for the better. Sustained by her love and care, he was able to pursue the occupation he loved most, his vocation, teaching. His teaching career spanned two continents and thirty three years. Brian was proud to receive tributes to his gifts in the classroom from many of his students, some of whom he had taught more than thirty years before. He numbered among his former students the present Chief Rabbi of England, and numerous writers and academics. Former students dedicated books to him, and his teaching career at the University of Lethbridge culminated in his being awarded the Distinguished Teaching Medal in 1990.

Throughout his working life and retirement, inspiring and sustaining him in his professional and creative endeavours, was always the love of his life, soulmate, kindred spirit and life partner, Jill, whom he married in 1960, and loved above all else in the world. He also loved deeply and was very proud of his two sons, Fergus and Dominic, and their partners, Gail and Terry; and his granddaughter Alyssa and her partner Josh; step-granddaughter Frances and her fiancé James, step-grandson Andrew and step-great-grandchildren Ethan and Louie. They in turn loved him deeply and were thankful for a lifetime of precious memories.

Brian was a long-time member of McKillop United and Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Churches. The family is grateful to these two faith communities, and to Pat Varley, the Berti family and all of Brian’s friends, for their support of Brian in his bereavement and illness; and to the doctors, nurses, and aids who provided him with such outstanding care. Brian lived as a disciple of Jesus, showing the genuineness of his faith by the way he faced the challenges of cancer with courage, dignity, and hope.

A Funeral Mass for Brian will be celebrated at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2405 – 12 Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta on Friday, March 16, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. That same evening at 7:00 P.M., an informal Prayer Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, Alberta, which will include an Open Mic followed by a Reception. Everyone is welcome. If friends so desire and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lethbridge and District Humane Society.

SMITH

EDWARD J. SMITH, beloved father of Cheryl Smith and Linda (James) Baron and grandfather to Kaitlyn, Charlize and Aimee Baron, passed away quietly in his sleep at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at the age of 91 years.

He is survived by the above and numerous nieces and nephews.

He now joins his loving wife Dena, their parents and all his siblings in the afterlife. His sister in law Fran Andrews still resides in long term care in Lethbridge.

Dena and Ed, Fran and Del Andrews and Bonnie and George Sinclair spent many happy hours waterskiing, camping and boating. Ironically, after a lifetime of knowing each other, Dad and Del passed on the very same day.

Ed was born in Coaldale and was the youngest of six children. As a teenager, he attended a Catholic school in Pincher Creek. He continued his studies at SAIT technical school where he became a machinist. During his technical training, he made many friends and enjoyed running around Calgary.

For those of you who discovered watermelons missing from your Coaldale garden 75 or 80 years ago, Ed freely admitted to “borrowing” one every now and then.

He later joined his brother and father as a John Deere dealer, branched out to selling boats and then began Smith’s Color TV with his father in Coaldale. The business expanded and they opened a store in Lethbridge. Although Dad retired many years ago, his legacy, Smiths Custom Audio Video, is still found on 13th Street North today. Many people in this area bought their first TV’s and appliances from him.

Ed and Dena spent ten years courting and during this time they were badminton champs and water skiing enthusiasts, stirring up a wake in the local irrigation canals with the tow rope tied to the window pillar of whatever new car Ed owned, tearing up & down the dirt tracks alongside the canals. Buyers of his used cars could never figure out why they were always sprung a little bit.

Ed and Dena married on May 6th, 1961. They were blessed with two children, Cheryl and Linda, who have many happy memories of family trips and time spent with family and friends at the cabin.

Ed’s grandchildren were the highlight of his life. There were many enjoyable hours watching them grow, learn to swim, water ski, ride dirt bikes, play marbles and card games (Smear, anyone?). Campfires and twisties stuffed with raspberry jam were always highlights of the summer. As the girls got older he was their biggest sports fan. Ed rarely missed one of their volleyball, basketball or soccer games. He was proud when Kaitlyn graduated and went off to engineering school. Ed tried to hold on for Charlize’s graduation this spring but lost his battle with pneumonia. He was so proud of her basketball accomplishments. He will be with Aimee in spirit as she moves to high school this year and goes on with her sporting efforts.

Ed liked to build and fix things and came up with creative solutions. He liked woodworking and enjoyed snowmobiling and motorcycling. The cabin at Ashley Lake was his favourite place and many happy memories were created there. Many friends and family enjoyed this special place with him. The cabin will not be the same without him, but his memory and stories will live on.

Ed was a wonderful character and a caring and loving person. He loved to drop by unannounced for friendly visits with his old friends. We’re all going to miss him.

A memorial for friends and family will be announced in the future.

TOLY

ALLEN STEWART TOLY passed away March 16, 2018 in Lethbridge, Alberta at the Chinook Regional Hospital at the age of 81 years old due to complications from Alzheimers. Born October 14, 1936, he was the oldest of five siblings born to Steve and Gay Toly. He leaves behind his three children, Lance (Shelly), Lisa, and Dana Watson (Neil), seven grandchildren (Ali, Paige, Jaxson, Noah, Kelton, Laken and Dayton) and two great grandchildren (Hixon and August). He was predeceased by his brother Wayne and is survived by his three sisters Pat Smith (Ron), Sona, and Linda Kofman (Rudy). Dad was passionate about education and received degrees from Olds College, Montana State University (BSc.), and UC Davis California (MSc.). He raised his family primarily in Claresholm where he was employed as a District Agriculturist for 26 years. He owned a small dryland farm outside of town which was his pride and joy and was a source of fulfillment to him. Many life lessons were taught on that farm. Dad grew up in Coaldale and learned the value of hard work in the sugar beet fields on his family farm. One of our lasting memories of “Grandpa Pops” is teaching his children and grandchildren the value of obtaining a higher education. He was insistent that this was the gateway to a better and a more productive life. And we believed him. After his retirement, he sold the farm and settled in Lethbridge where he delighted in his grandchildren’s various school, athletic, and extracurricular accomplishments. He loved to watch and cheer them on throughout the years. He was a strong and proud man, but his heart was softened by his grandchildren’s love and respect for them. In his retirement years he enjoyed watching movies, keeping his truck clean, oil painting, wood carving, and enjoyed travelling to different parts of the world. The family would like to thank the staff of St. Mikes, Dr. Lee, Dr. Ikuta, and countless other health care staff that helped care for him in his declining years. There will be no formal service. Family will gather together for a private celebration of his life at a later time.

FEDORATION, Lynn Elizabeth

April 7, 1945 – Ellscott, Alberta

March 14, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Lynn Fedoration, beloved wife of Russ of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at the age of 72 years.

Stubborn, funny, supportive… These are some of the words I would use to describe my beautiful mother. Although Alzheimer’s took her away from us years ago, I learned to appreciate the person she had become in spite of her diagnosis. Today as she took her last breath I was reminded of the person she once was. Always there for me. Life of course will go on but for me it will never be quite the same.

Lynn was born in Ellscott, AB and was a Lioness Club Member for many years. She enjoyed painting and pottery.

Besides her loving husband Russ, Lynn is survived by her daughter Shelley Bailey, her partner Glenn Charles of Calgary; grandchildren, Mackenzie Bailey of Coquitlam, BC and Landyn Bailey of Calgary; and her sister Sheila Sumner of Calgary. She was predeceased by her parents Blanche and Harry Keep, brother Danny Keep and her sister Myrna Sanders.

Alexander “Alex” Wirzba

1931 – 2018

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Alex Wirzba passed away on Sunday, March 18 at the age of 86. Alexander Wirzba was born on April 13, 1931 to August and Olga Wirzba in what is present day Poland. His large family would eventually relocate to Eastern Germany, and then to Western Germany as refugees during the end of World War II. Alex and his family immigrated to Canada in 1951, settling in the Lethbridge area. Alex was very grateful for the opportunity to start a new life in Canada. After arriving in Lethbridge, the family – and many other new German immigrants – became members of Bethany Baptist Church. This church would become a very important part of Alex’s life. Here, in April 1954, he met Ingrid Roepke, his friend and sweetheart. They were married on July 23, 1954 and would eventually have 4 children. Alex was a devout Christian and a man who made sacrifices for his family. Alex had the remarkable, intuitive gift of building and repairing things. He was a pressure welder by trade, but was skilled in numerous other areas as well: as a mechanic, metal fabricator, carpenter, farmer and all-round handyman. Following a 2-year contract as a sugar beet worker, Alex worked for a farm implement dealership in Hilda and then a large industrial plant – Horton Steel Works Ltd. in Lethbridge. Thereafter he formed a construction company with two of his brothers (Emil and Eric); Wirzba Brothers Construction Co. built quality homes for almost 30 years. Alex also purchased a mixed-irrigation farm and built up a small feedlot operation near Park Lake. Alex was a very industrious, resourceful and ambitious individual. He helped out many family members, friends, colleagues and neighbors – only giving up after his body started wearing out and Parkinson’s disease had set in. Remaining to mourn his passing are: his wife Ingrid; son David (Kellie); son Samuel (Deanne); daughter Esther (Hubert Baart); and son Norman (Gretchen); 11 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; his brother Eric (Ingrid Wirzba); his sister’s-in-law: Margaret (Emil Wirzba), Bridgette Bevernick (Gerhard Wirzba), Irene (Gunther Wirzba) and Erna (Dieter) Roepke; as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

Condolences may be forwarded through http://www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Lynn Fedoration, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB Telephone: 1-800-661-1599

SOOP

It is with a heavy heart and sorrow, that we announce the sudden passing of LOUIS MELVIN SOOP – Piitaikihsipimii (Spotted Eagle). A beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandpa, and friend, dearly departed at his home on March 16th, 2018 on the Blood Reserve.

Louis, born January 31st 1937 to Arthur Soop and Josephine Healy Soop at the Blood Indian Hospital, was a member of the Mamiks (Fisheaters) clan. He leaves behind loving wife Abby (Flynn); children: Sandra, Greg (PattyAnne), Shane, Phillip (Doris), Annette (Jimmy); sisters: Carolyn (Douglas), Corola (Hank).

Louis was predeceased by: father Arthur Soop; mother Josephine; paternal grandparents, Dick and Beth Soop; maternal grandparents, John and Louise Healy; brothers Kenrick, Everett, Oliver, Clement; niece Kari-Lynn (Tweety) Soop; granddaughter Kassie Soop; nephew Darby Soop; his grandchildren: Tyler (Patrycja), Danielle (Kaylee), Tenielle (Colton), Natasha (Owen), Neil (Sam), Josh, Zack, Faith (Brad), Hope, Diana, Owen, Ronin, Nolan, Nation, Paige, Gracie, Marchie; great grandchildren; Rayney, Kaylin, Kamrie, Hendrix.

Due to complications at birth, Josephine was kept at the hospital for a month, and Louis was taken care of by nuns who came to adore him, and would often walk the halls with him.

Louis, a known scholar, attended The Residential School, during which he joined the cadets, and quickly rose in ranking, receiving a medal for outstanding marksmanship. Soon after, Louis was awarded a commission from the Governor General in her Majesty’s Service to the rank of Second Leftennant; also attended Glenwood School, travelling on horseback to and from proved to be joyous for Louis, then Cardston High School, and finished his final year at Western Canada High School in Calgary, AB, working at Loblaws after school to pay for room and board. Throughout his school years, Louis started a band with Harold Healy, called the Melody Pals, where Louis played the accordion. They would often crash dances where the music tempo would be slower, and liven up the crowds with their cheerful music.

Once finished school, Louis decided to move to Toronto, finding work at Sears, where he would soon meet the love of his life and future wife Abby. They were married within a year, and traveled to Glendale, California, where Louis received training working on the new IBM computers. Once training was complete, heading back to Toronto, Louis started working at the Canadian IBM.

After 2 years in Toronto, Louis received the greatest opportunity, working as a reporter at the Blackfoot Radio Station. Moving back to the Blood Reserve, Louis found his calling and by far his favorite profession. Louis was very sincere and engaging with people, proving a favourite past time, and not considered a job by any means as this summed up his whole personality.

Louis’ wide range of employment also included managing the Standoff Supermarket, then returning to the Kanai News as Director of the paper. Louis was always quick to help loved ones, most notably driving the late Everett Soop to conferences, workshops, and meetings, all whilst sitting on the Alberta Heritage board and the Alberta Handicapped association for several years.

The ever adapting scholar, continued his education by studying his love of art at The University of Lethbridge. Aquiring a degree in Fine Arts, and developing his own unique style, his works are displayed throughout the reserve, and is featured in The Edmonton Parliament Building. Louis also coordinated The Art Symposium at The Galt Museum in Lethbridge, AB, and acted as Director at The Native Film Festival in Pincher Creek in September of 1988. In 2002, Louis was instrumental in bringing The Freeman Collection of Native Artifacts from The Royal London Museum and The Royal Ontario Museum to be exhibited at The Galt Museum entitled Akaitapiiwa Ancestors Exhibition.

Louis’ love of heritage was showcased as he started teaching Blackfoot Studies at The Red Crow Community College for over 20 years, and partaking in seasonal teachings for over 10 years at The University of Lethbridge and University of Calgary.

Louis started storytelling with Mary Hayes, travelling Alberta partaking in conferences and school symposiums, becoming very in sync. Traditional Dancing brought tremendous joy to Louis, where he would dance at The Chateau Isabella on the weekends, and was invited to dance in Hamburg, Germany, where there are Native Outdoor showcases.

In the early 2000s, Louis and Abbey joined one of the Reserves most prestigious associations, The Horns Society.

In the last few years of Louis’ life, he started writing his memoirs of life experiences, and the night before his passing, Louis looked over at his wife Abbey Soop, and stated “I think I’m finished.” He touched so many lives, and was truly loved by all, and will be greatly missed. His memoirs will be published in the near future.

A Wake Service is CHANGED to the Moses Lake Community Hall, Blood Reserve on Friday, March 23rd from 7:00 p.m. all night. The Funeral Service will be at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Blood Reserve on Saturday, March 24th at 11:00 a.m.. Condolences may be sent to: http://www.legacyfuneralhome.ca
