ALLAN

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our mother, MARGE ALLAN. Mom passed away with family by her side at St. Therese Villa, on Friday, January 19, 2018 at the age of 87 years, four days shy of her 88th birthday.

Mother leaves to mourn her sons Bruce (Jane) Allan and Donald (Linda) Allan; daughters Barbara Allan-Layton, and Ronna (Keith) Broadbent; seven amazing grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Ted, in 2004 and her younger brothers Ronald Minion in 2008 and Dennis Minion in 2009. Mom always said her only real accomplishment in life was her family.

Mother was born in Magrath at her grandparents’ home (Peter and Minnie Dow). When she was three months old, she moved to Rocky Mountain House with her parents, Roy and Irene Minion. These were the depression years. Times were tough and money was scarce. But she spoke often and fondly about the years spent in “Rocky.” She always referred to them as some of the happiest times of her life. Being a farm girl and her dad’s helper was just the best.

When she was nine years old, the family returned to Magrath for a year, before settling in Raymond. Marge finished school there and spent four years working for the Bank of Montreal. It was at that time that a young Raymond boy returned home from the Air Force. As they say… the rest is history. Ted Allan and Mother were married in 1949 and raised their family there. In 1965, they made the decision to move to the big city. That was where Mom began her second career. After eighteen years, she retired from the Royal Bank on Mayor Magrath Drive. She made many fond memories of staff, customers and friends from “The Good Old Days.”

At Mother’s request, there will be no formal funeral service. A Private Family Celebration of Life will be held in the spring. Flowers are gratefully declined.

Bhagwan Dua

1936 – 2018

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Father, Husband, Brother and Grandfather, Dr. Bhagwan Dass Dua. He passed away suddenly on January 10, 2018, while on vacation in Kona, Hawaii.

Dr. Dua was born in Farookah, India, the second of four children. His family escaped to India during Partition in August of 1947 with only a few personal belongings. When they arrived in the chaos of New Delhi, Dr. Dua became a bit of a street urchin with not much interest in school. He started working at a bike shop repairing tires. Under cajoling from his older brother, B.C. Dua, he wrote his grade 10 final exams, and, shockingly, passed. This allowed him to apply for a job in the new Indian Federal Government, where he became a secretary. There he met his two best friends, Khazan Singh and Dass, who encouraged him to continue his education.

This was the start of his passion for education. He received his B.A. with Honours in Political Science in 1956 at Punjab University. Then three Masters Degrees: in Political Science in 1958, and Public Administration in 1964 from Punjab University, and Political Science in 1967 from Leeds University, England. He was also working as a Lecturer in D. A. V. College, Ambala (1959-1962) and later at Mahendra College Punjabi University, Patiala (1962-1971). His thirst for knowledge became insatiable prompting him to apply for a Ph.D at the University of Alberta where he was accepted with full scholarship in 1971.

While doing his doctoral studies, Dr. Dua was also a Teaching Assistant at the University of Alberta and Lecturer at Concordia College in Edmonton, Alberta. He completed his Ph.D. in 1977 and was immediately hired by the University of Lethbridge as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science. He had an illustrious career at the University of Lethbridge as an educator, researcher and administrator. He authored many books and papers, was a Guest Speaker and served on many Committees at the University.

Dr. Dua was an extremely successful Administrator, first as Chairman of the Political Science Department from 1983-1990, and then as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science from 1991-2002. He was an extremely successful Dean using his charm, humor and fairness to steer the Faculty during the very difficult Klein cutback years. This won him many admirers and lifelong friends. He took Administrative Leave from the University of Lethbridge from 2001-2003 to serve as the Vice President of the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute in New Delhi, India. After returning, he retired from the University of Lethbridge, but continued as Visiting Professor for the next seven years.

Dr. Dua had two passions: education and family. He was a kind, loving and caring man, a devoted husband, an encouraging and proud father and grandfather and a concerned friend, brother and uncle. He made friends wherever he went with his openness and humility.

Dr. Dua is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Swarn, his two daughters, Manjula (Fred Hansen) and Mini, his grandchildren-Natasha, Megan and Elise Hansen, and William and Rebecca Sugars. He is also survived by his brothers B.C Dua (Kanta) of New Delhi, India and Shyam Dua (Makiko) of San Jose, California. Left to mourn are the Puri and Chawla Families and numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

He was predeceased by his parents Roop Chand Dua and Sabrai Dang and his sister Krishna Chawla.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4th Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the University of Lethbridge, A735 University Hall, 4401 University Drive, Lethbridge, Alberta, T1K 3M4.

LONG TIME SQUIRREL

It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather, DION LONG TIME SQUIRREL. Dion began his journey with the Creator on January 16, 2018.

Dion is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Vivian White Quills; two precious daughters D.J. Chanel and Deidre (Godfrey) Long Time Squirrel, his pride and joy grandson “His son”, Kingsley, as well as his two step-daughters Lorilee White Quills and Delaine (Steve) Frank. Dion is also survived by his sister Dylana (Brian) Long Time Squirrel, Denise (Tyrone) Potts, Lynn, Pam Healy, and Lucille Bare Shin Bone; brothers Kevin (Lori), Kurt Healy and Myron (Tanya) Eagle Speaker; aunts Bonita and Pearl Long Time Squirrel, Patsy Weasel Moccasin, Bella (Burt) Mistaken Chief, Lila Heavy Head, and Jessilyn (Armond) Page; uncles and godfather William (Mary) Long Time Squirrel and one of his favourite uncles, Del Sr. and Gilbert Healy. He is also survived by his Great-Aunts, Annie Davis and Betty Hoof. Sister-in-laws, Peggy and Vera White Quills and Tammy (Ed) Knife. Brother-in-laws, Eugene (Lucille) and Kirk (Lorna) White Quills. He is also survived by numerous family relations: Wells, Many Grey Horses, Old Shoes, Eagle Plumes, and Plain Womans.

Dion was born July 4, 1964 in Calgary, AB at the Holy Cross Hospital to (the late) Blandine Long Time Squirrel and (the late) Arthur Healy Jr. and was raised by his grandparents, Nellie and Tom Long Time Squirrel. As the oldest grandchild, he was a “Kiipitaapokaa,” and raised in the Fort Whoop Up area on the Blood Reserve. Alongside his cousins, whom he took as his brothers and sisters; Leonard, Ditty, P.J., Antonio, Barry, Lyle, George, Newton, Shelley, Leeann, Roxanne, Pam and Judy.

In his younger years, alongside his cousins, they went for fishing trips with uncle Darius and Aunt Pearl. They always went prepared to clean and cook what they caught on the banks of the river.

Dion’s grandparents didn’t allow him to go to Indian Residential School, so therefore he received his education in the Lethbridge area. In Junior High at St. Francis Junior High he played football for the “Bombers” as well as playing basketball.

In 1987, this is when he met the love of his life, Vivian. Dion was devoted to taking care of his wife and daughters, ensuring they were well taken care of. He took on the job training with the pipelines, that enabled him to travel all over Alberta. During his tenure with the pipelines, he was required to relocate wherever the work took him and had stories to tell about the adventures involved and how his smooth talking could get him out of trouble with the police. After ten years with the pipelines he returned home, he went back to doing what he loved, carpentry. This took him to renovating and moving his family into his grandparents homestead. As a ‘Kiipitaapokaa” Dion was notorious for neatness, cleanliness, and orderly in which everything had a place. He did his own laundry and made sure everything was folded, including his underclothing and socks.

He played softball with his in laws, their team called the Prairie Fire. And was a fast ball pitcher for Fort Whoop Up team. Winning trophies he displayed proudly, with stories to tell behind them. He retired from playing, then one game his step-daughter Delaine and son-in-law Steve asked him to play for their team the Killer Kleats. He wasn’t impressed with the outcome and said he should of just stayed retired.

Dion was an avid hunter and went on many hunting expeditions, with his cousins, bringing home trophies or souvenirs, bringing them to the taxidermy.

The happiest day of his life was when his first grandchild was born, and to his amazement, he got a grandson. His little boss man. He loved to spoil Kingsley, they were inseparable, he called him, “My son”.

In his past time he read the newspaper daily and loved reading hunting magazines. He was well informed of the current events. In the past year and a half, Dion spent his time spoiling his grandson “bossman.” To be called “Papa” was a real honor he took very seriously, with pride and joy. He received a shirt that he loved wearing proudly, it said “Im too cool to be called Grandpa, so call me Papa.” He would also be on the phone gossiping with his neighbor “Bobo” Hunt. When Vivian would come home everyday from work, Dion always had a story to tell about his daily walk abouts.

Dion made friends everywhere he went. He was a gentle, kind person, who attracted everyone to him, always joking around, making everyone laugh. Dion also enjoyed helping his uncle William during branding season. When Auntie would call him, he would always say, “Just taking it easy relaxing in my man cave.” Dion always mentioned his domain (his man cave). You could always spot Dion a mile away with his camo jacket. He loved the outdoors and hunting.

Dion was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Tom and Nellie (Plain Woman) Long Time Squirrel. Paternal grandparents, Arthur Sr. and Betty Healy (White Feathers), aunts Deanna, Mary, Sylvia and Theresa Long Time Squirrel; uncles Darius, Thomas, Clarence, Marlin and Conrad Long Time Squirrel, Winston, Jordan, Burton and Terry Healy; special cousins Donna, Marie, Judy, Newton, George and Christopher “Twister” Long Time Squirrel. Mother-in-law Olive White Quills, Grandmother-in-law, Flora Creighton and brother-in-law Robert White Quills.

The family apologizes for any names that may have been missed.

Freda Gatzky

1941 – 2018

Freda Gatzky of Lethbridge, formerly of Edmonton, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2018 at Edith Cavell Care Centre at the age of 76 years. Freda was born in the rolling hills of southern Saskatchewan, in the Whiska Creek area on a farm, on a snowy November 2, 1941 evening. Her grandmother delivered her and she grew up going to school at Neville. She enjoyed sports, especially playing ball and hockey and she usually won a ribbon or two during track and field days. She attended Neville United Church, sang in the CGIT choir and was a member of our local Canadian Girls in Training (CGIT). Freda graduated grade 12 in 1960 and started her 48 year telephone career in Regina, and it was during this time she worked for Sask Tel for four and a half years as an operator and junior supervisor. Getting tired of the large city she decided to spread her wings and venture out west. Freda went to Peace River, Alberta where she was hired immediately as a mobile and radio operator. She found this particular job very interesting as it was a part of the oilfield connection. 30 years were spent in Peace River as an operator, trainer and relief manager/supervisor and she particularly loved the north for the forest parks and nature. It was during her stay in Peace River that she began selling real estate part time and she also began curling which she enjoyed very much. When A.G.T telephones shut down in Peace River, she transferred to Grande Prairie where she worked for about 7 years when the company changed to Telus. Eventually the Grande Prairie location shut down, and it was during that time that Freda moved to Edmonton and worked as a relay operator for the deaf and hard of hearing. Then when they shut down Edmonton, she had the opportunity to move to New Westminster, but her health started to fail so that is when she decided to retire. Freda loved her weekend trips to Jasper Hot Springs, which was her favorite get away. She was also very fond of Palm Springs, and Phoenix during winter holidays. Freda moved with the help of a special nephew Ed Gatzky to Lethbridge which was a huge relief to get out of the big city. She enjoyed Lethbridge and resided there until her retirement. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4th Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta. Interment to follow in the Mountain View Cemetery.

Maurice “Moe” Martin

1933 – 2018

Mr. Maurice “Moe” Martin of Lethbridge, beloved husband of the late Mrs. Betty Martin, passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at the age of 84 years. Born to fly but learned to run at the Warner Highschool, Moe excelled due to the fact his dad was the principal (there was some retaliation from classmates haha). Moe moved on to Edmonton to get his (Bac) which he said stood for “Bounced At Christmas Degree.” At this point, being in the air was the place for Dad, so he joined the RCAF for a 5 year stint. Moe met his future wife Betty in a bowling alley and eventually they had the Martin Brothers (Mitch/Murray). Out of the military, Pa took up being a spray pilot, convincing Betty that spraying was much safer than being a stunt pilot (air shows). As we know, Moe became one of Time Airs number one airplane pilots and Moe’s knowledge was shared with all above and beyond. Mom and Dad retired to Desert Hot Springs where they enjoyed 12 years… they were very accommodating to all who visited for a stint in the 3 day hide a bed… A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00am, Monday, January 29, 2018 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4th Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta. Final Debriefing to follow at the 702 Wing Lethbridge Airport. Open to all, Captain’s Treat!

Teresa Fox (nee Weasel Head) – O’taikiimmaakii

On January 25 at 7:05 AM our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt was taken Home.

Teresa was born on February 10, 1943 to Pat/Mokakin and Paula/Poona (nee Iron) Weasel Head. She was the youngest biological daughter of 15 children. During her upbringing, her parents raised her in the traditional Blackfoot ceremonies and as a little girl she was transferred with them into the Medicine Pipe Bundle, Aihtsi’siihtsi.

At the age of seven, Teresa was placed in the St. Mary’s Indian Residential School on the Blood Reserve. Only going home at Christmas and summer, where she would be at the Aokokatsin. She began playing the organ at the age of 13 and would play at all masses, at times three masses a day. She skipped grade 8 and was placed in grade 9 with her brother Moses. In Grade 10, her final year at St. Mary’s, she was in the same class as her future husband Tony, who had returned from St. Thomas College. In order for Teresa to complete a grade 12 education she had to leave the reserve she attended several nearby schools, including Cardston and St. Mike’s (Pincher Creek). She then left to attend Legal High School, which was unconventional for her very traditional parents. Upon completion of grade 12, Teresa expressed interest to attend teaching school in Saskatchewan, however, the priest refused to support her. She then turned to her sister, Helen MacDougall, to assist her application process for the St. Michael’s School of Nursing, which she began in 1963.

In 1964, Teresa was reunited with the love of her life, Tony. After being together for two years and having their eldest child, Tony and Teresa were married on May 14, 1966 with Fr. Marvin Fox, Oblate Priest presiding. Mom and Dad had 2 more children all the while mom was going to nursing school and practicums that included Ponoka, Fort Macleod, and the Blood Indian Hospital. Mom graduated as a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1970 but attended a rodeo instead of the graduation ceremony. She began working full time at the Blood Indian Hospital (BIH) in Moses Lake in 1970. She had her three younger children while working. She completed her Hospital Administration certificate in 1977 through distance learning.

In 1978, she was elected as part of the Blood Tribe council, and served a two-year term under the late Chief Jim Shot Both Sides, and Roy Fox. Chief Shot Both Sides hand-picked Teresa to be part of the health committee, and she was instrumental in the development of the Blood Tribe Health Department.

In 1981, Mom’s brother, Moses, and her mother, Poona passed away. These two events made it difficult for mom to remain at BIH and she transferred to public health nursing in Standoff. She completed her Nursing Administration from Ottawa during her tenure in Standoff. Mom was a very active member of the Indian and Inuit Nursing Association of Canada. From 1986 to 1990 mom was the Nurse-in-Charge for Piikani Public Health. She worked closely with Charlie Weasel Head (Blood Indian Hospital Administrator) and other tribal leaders in Piikani and Kainai to develop a Community Development Plan.

In 1986, mom was asked to be part of a grass roots team to organize the take-over of the Education system from the Government and Canada and put it in the hands of the local community. Mom and others canvassed the community for signatures and local control began in 1988. Mom served as one of the first Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) members from 1988-90. She did not serve again until 2015-17. Mom’s most recent involvement with a community organization was for the revitalization of the Blackfoot Language as a committee member of the Aiitsiipoyiiksi Committee, from 2014 until her passing.

Mom was a devout Catholic, she was involved in the Cursillo movement when it first came to the Blood Reserve in 1983. She served as Rectora in Saddle Lake Alberta in 1985. She received her certificate for Pastoral Biblical Theology from the Newman College in 2003. Mom was in right relationship with both her Maker and the Church, receiving Holy Communion until her last day. Mom was devoted to her Rosary and this was being said by her family as she took her last breathe.

Mom was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, auntie, and sister. Mom and Dad were devoted to one another and their vows and they were honored by their children who organized their 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration on May 14, 2016. Mom was very supportive of dad and their ranch in the hills where for a time they raised competitive-racing quarter horses. The highlight of their competitive career was racing their favorite horse, Liberty Oh. Mom was a great inspiration to her family in all they did, she sacrificed much of herself to foster her families passions in their own endeavours including rodeo, hockey, figure skating and most especially their educational journeys.

Mom had a very large family. She was a compassionate woman who held many dear in her life. Due to this, the family apologizes for not mentioning everyone.

Mom was predeceased by her parents Pat and Paula Weasel Head; brothers: Mike (Louise) Oka, Robert, Charlie (Irene), Pat (Annie), Frank, and Moses; her sisters: Gertrude (John) Fox, Margaret (Jack) Many Bears, Mildred, Gabriel, Isabelle, and Helen (Martin) MacDougall and her father and mother in-law, George and Margaret Fox.

Mom is survived by her beloved husband Tony Fox; children: Annette (Clark) Bruised Head, Sheila, Derrick (Louise), Terri-Lynn, TJ, Paulette (Duane) Mistaken Chief. Grandchildren: Ken (Erin), Andrea, Scott, Mario (Hayley), Diandra, Ross (Danielle), Joey, Courtney (Nevin), Chate-Lane (Troy), Austin, Avery, Chondra, Jaklyn, and Dallis; Great-Grandchildren: Meeka, Paige, Cruz, Gunner, Brodie, Keni, Drew, Chloe, Tien, Tsisga, Scotty, Sawyer, Tasitsa, Kenneth. May. 8, 2000- January 25, 2018

His wings were ready, our hearts were not.

Daniel leaves behind to mourn his loving parents, Scott and Shelly Hughes of Claresholm.

His other “parents” John and Stacey Cahoon. His “siblings” Jordan, Zoë and Tyler Cahoon all of Lethbridge. Also left behind are many other family members and friends.

Daniel attend LCI high school in Lethbridge, for the last 4 years, Where he brought love and joy every single day.

Daniel lived life to the fullest every day, and enjoyed every moment. Whether it was 4X4 driving with his papa, listening to his momma sing, ripping around in the backyard in his car or hanging out in the garage with his fan.

Daniel really enjoyed the simple things in life, like being in the sunshine, hanging out at friends cabin, swimming in the lake, chai-tea Frappuccino or attempting to drive every chance he got.

Daniel came into this world fighting and he left the same way. He lived his life to the fullest and on his own terms. He found reasons to smile even on the darkest days. I encourage all of you to do the same. There is always a reason to smile.

HUNN

GRAHAM “GERRY” ROBERT HUNN, beloved husband of the late Darlene “Dene” Stella Hunn, passed away at St. Michael’s Health Centre, Palliative Care Unit on Friday, January 26, 2018 at the age of 86 years.

He is survived by his children Richard (Dawn), Randy (Kathy), Kelley (John) Giesbrecht, son-in-law Ken Rogers, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, as well as his sister Glenda (Donald) Milne of Scarborough, ON.

Gerry was predeceased by his daughter Laurie Anne.

Gerry was born in Birmingham, England on December 19, 1931. After completing school, he worked briefly with the Birmingham City Education Dept. He considered joining the RAF but instead, emigrated to Canada alone on a 7,000 ton cargo ship to St. John, NB. then rail coach class to Toronto; a trip of 15 days.

He arrived in Toronto on December 30, 1949 and on January 3, 1950, obtained a job at the Canadian Bank of Commerce where he worked until joining the RCAF as an officer cadet on June 19, 1950. After receiving his navigator wings and commission, he was assigned to 404 Sqn. Greenwood, NS and in 1953 met his wife to be, who had been transferred to the same Sqn. They were subsequently transferred to the Operational Training Sqn, at RCAF Summerside, P.E.I., where they were married on May 1, 1954. On marriage, Dene had to relinquish her career, but from that point on throughout frequent duty absences (which were usually when children were ill) she supported Gerry completely as he served in Canada, U.S.A., Italy and the Netherlands in a career that saw him fly more than 4,000 hours. His initial RCAF flying was in long range maritime patrol in the North Atlantic and the Arctic, then on to all weather fighters and fighter bombers. His flying included 22 aircraft types with the USAF, U.S. Coast Guard, Italian Air Force, RAF and the German army. He had operational flight test, staff and command assignments; serving on land with the Canadian army and NATO, at sea with the RCN and RN and even a day submerged with the submarine USN Bergall. Military patrols were east to Ankara, Turkey and west to the Philippines with all of Western Europe, North America and the Pacific Island air bases in between.

Dene and Gerry had enjoyed Lethbridge because as senior air force officer in Southern Alberta, he came to visit the Air Cadet Squadron. So, on retiring as a Lt. Colonel, this became home.

In Lethbridge, Gerry supported the Assumption Parish Knights of Columbus as a life member of the third and fourth degree, a chapter member of LUSI and a long-serving volunteer at the Chinook Regional Hospital in a variety of departments (including Santa). He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion (Annual Tattoo Committee) and several charitable organizations.

He did everything thanks to the support and love of Dene to whom he was married for 62 years.

At Gerry’s request, cremation is entrusted to Cornerstone Funeral Home. His ashes will be placed in the Field of Honour at Mountain View Cemetery at a later date with his name on the Memorial Wall next to Dene.

Gerry appreciated the support of his brother Knights, especially Council 5726 and the friendship of they and their wives.

Rather than an Honour Guard, he would like you to sit and hold hands with your lady.

A Prayer Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB, on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 7:00 P.M.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ST. MARTHA’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 355 Columbia Blvd. West, Lethbridge, AB, on Friday, February 2, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Roque Pereira, Celebrant.

At Gerry’s request and in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory are gratefully accepted to THE WAR AMPS, 1 Maybrook Drive, Scarborough, ON., M1V 5K9, the Alberta Birds of Prey Foundation, 2124 – 16 Avenue, Coaldale, AB., T1M 1M8 or to your local Parish.

ODEGARD

ELAINE PHYLLIS ODEGARD, of Picture Butte, beloved wife of the late Arnold Odegard, passed away suddenly at home on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at the age of 74 years.

She is the loving mother of Grant (Colleen Hankinson) Odegard of Lethbridge and Carolyn (Russ) Wlad of Red Deer. She will be lovingly remembered by her grand-daughters Carley, Robyn and Regan Wlad. Elaine is also survived by her brother Allan Egland and nieces, nephews and many great life-long friends.

Elaine was recently predeceased by her husband Arnold on November 11, 2017. She was also predeceased by her parents Richard and Phyllis Egland and her stepmother Hazel

Egland.

Elaine was born and raised on the family farm east of Carmangay, Alberta. Mom and dad became friends in grade 1 at the Barrhill School north of Picture Butte; they were high school sweet hearts and were married July 23, 1963. They spent 54 wonderful years together until dad recently passed away due to cancer.

Their entire life was spent on the farm and ranch north of Picture Butte. They built a beautiful yard and home from scratch, planting 4000 trees on their property along with being next to a small lake that is a haven for all wildlife in the area. Mom’s pride and joy was her huge garden and gorgeous yard, she created an oasis for all to enjoy.

She always looked forward to a visit from anyone, especially her granddaughters, grandma and grandpa’s farm was their favourite place. Mom was the greatest and kindest lady you could meet; her loss will deeply impact all who knew her. We truly believe mom was sent to heaven early because dad couldn’t be without her.

So pour a glass of wine, sit back and think about Elaine, because she is thinking about all of you.

MERTIE ANN CHILTON

May 18, 1921 – January 24, 2018

Mertie Ann Staig, youngest daughter of Charles S and Gertrude L Staig was born in Canadian County Oklahoma on 18 May 1921. She grew up in west Texas, riding and wrestling with her brothers Charles (Bud) and Milton (Deedle) and sisters Mary Ann and Ellen May while refining that extraordinary independent and assertive, yet kind, presence that marked her as special throughout her life. She became Bachelor of Science (Geology) in 1942 at the University of Oklahoma and, after a brief time as a Military Cartographer, travelled nearly 2000 miles to rejoin the love of her life, James Ryder Chilton. They were married at his parent’s home in Calgary on 7 December 1942.

Jim and Mertie worked together on key petroleum development projects in western Canada until Mertie left the industry in 1946. She continued a very active life, enjoying the outdoors, entertaining and taking active roles in sports and professional organizations that later led to increasing responsibilities in charity and social service groups. Jim and Mertie retired to Victoria in 1978, where they enjoyed the Arts, frequent travel and golf with friends at Glen Meadows until his death in 1989. Mertie was instrumental in establishing and maintaining Seniors Serving Seniors of Victoria, involved and respected as an Elder at First Unitarian Church of Victoria, and a very active volunteer in her community.

Throughout nearly 10 decades, she maintained close ties to her family, nurtured many lasting friendships, was a kind aunt to her many nieces and nephews, and second mother to her neighbours’ and friends’ children. When asked, she gave sound and frank advice and help when needed. Mertie was generous and thoughtful in her philanthropy; those who wish to continue her work could donate to the “Jim and Mertie Chilton Fund” at either the Calgary Foundation or the Victoria Foundation. Mertie is survived by nieces and nephews resident in Western Canada and US Southwest, and following generations around the globe, all of whom think kindly of a special Aunt. Indeed, she will be fondly remembered and missed by all who knew her.

Dorothy Liberty Taylor

1918 – 2018

Dorothy Liberty Taylor entered life in a hurry and lived her life much the same way to the fullest. Her parents, Charles and Isabella Goode, who were then living on the homestead near Picture Butte at SE33-12-21-W4, rushed by car to Lethbridge for their child’s delivery. They didn’t make it. Instead, Dorothy was born in the coal mining hospital in Diamond City, north of Lethbridge, in the stormy evening hours of January 6, 1918. Dr. Inkrote delivered her that night. This month, 24 days after celebrating her 100th birthday, Dorothy died in Lethbridge where she has lived for the past 45 years. Her beloved husband, Henry Edwin Taylor, died in 1977. The great depression of the 1930s drove the Goode family north to the Peace River country where her father set up farming. It was here that she met Henry Taylor who was homesteading in a rural community called Rosedale. Her brothers Morris and Art also homesteaded, but Art returned to Picture Butte area where he lived for the rest of his life. Her sister, Helen, stayed in Barrons where she married William Nolan. All her brothers and sister have predeceased her. Henry and Dorothy moved to Brandon, Manitoba, in 1956. It was here that Dorothy worked as a school secretary and joined the Order of the Royal Purple Lodge. She was a member for 50 years and an Honored Royal Lady three times. Dorothy was an active community member and will be remembered for her cheerful laugh and endless energy. She loved sports and was good at them, especially bowling, curling and baseball. She was an expert needlewoman, winning many prizes at fairs and Women’s Institute competitions. She will be greatly missed by her children, Wilma and Roger (Donna), two grandchildren, Richard and Bruce (Kerry), two great-grandchildren, Riley and Ashley, and two great-great grandchildren.

GROZLI

We regret to announce the passing of our dear father and grandfather JULIUS GROZLI. Julius was born November 18, 1936, in Varpalota, Hungary. He came to Canada in 1955 and lived in Victoria for a short time. His job with the CN rail brought him to Lethbridge where he settled. In Lethbridge, he worked many times two jobs to support his family. He worked at Canada Packers and City of Lethbridge, to name a few. In the evenings, he was a bartender. His days off were spent out in his garden, cooking, fishing with his children and friends, hunting, and always helping others. Julius had a love for dancing as well. He took great pride teaching his daughter and his grandchildren how to waltz and polka. Julius belonged to the Hungarian Club in Lethbridge and was very proud of his heritage. Many times through the years, the Hungarian Club had a float in the Whoop-Up Days Parade. Julius and the group would be on the float dancing their traditional Hungarian dances in full costume. Julius touched many lives around him with his infectious laugh, love of cooking and gardening. He could make anything grow.

Julius is survived by his daughter Leslie Hecher (Dan), son Michael Grozli (Alison); stepsons John Grozli (Andrea) and Mike Fisher; granddaughters Melyssa Hecher & fiancé Ted Stringer, Ashley Hecher, Chase Grozli and Bryce Grozli; stepgrandchildren Natasha (Colin) Latta, Ben Fisher, and Sean Fisher, as well as three step great-grandchildren. Julius survived two strokes and spent the last few years at Columbia Assisted Living. Here, he was their resident gardener.

Julius’ family would like to thank Dr. Steeves for his care, Columbia House for looking after him these last few years, St. Michael’s Palliative Care for the care he received in his final days and Father Alphonse for his final blessing. A special thank you to Doug Hazuda from Cornerstone Funeral Home for all your help with Julius’ final wishes.

An Interment for Julius will be held for family and close friends in the spring.

BROUSSEAU

Our DAVID passed away quietly in his sleep at home on February 7th, 2018 at the age of 39 after a year long struggle with lung and heart issues.

We believe he might say “Hey you!… Don’t be sad for me. I’ve had a good life surrounded by love and I have gone to be with Jesus.”

He was predeceased by his Grandma and Grandpa Lane and Grandma and Grandpa Brousseau.

David is survived by his parents, Barb and Rick Sera of Coalhurst and Louis and Jean Brousseau of Airdrie, his sisters Denise Holland (Mike) of Lethbridge, Catherine Sera (Reece Beach) of Quesnel, Danielle Sera of Coalhurst, his Grandparents Zoltan and Ann Sera of Lethbridge and numerous Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.

His patience, tolerance and determination to accept and adapt to his physical and mental limitations was an inspiration to those who knew and loved him. Along with an impish sense of humor and awesome laugh and smile, he often made those around him forget their worries and struggles and laugh with him.

David was born in Brooks, Alberta, on Jan. 6, 1979 and moved to Lethbridge when he was seven where he resided, in a Rehoboth Christian Ministries group home with two roommates, until his passing. He attended special needs programs at St Mary’s, St Francis and CCH until graduation with his peers, as an honorary graduate, when he was nineteen. After that, with the help of amazing staff and his family, he was very active in the community. He went swimming, bowling and to handicapped riding, volunteered with the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign, went to the shelter to pet the dogs and cats and occasionally helped to fill food hampers at the Food Bank. David enjoyed being around people, attending many functions, shows and attractions within and around Lethbridge.

His family is especially grateful to all of the people who helped David live such a full and happy life; his teachers and aides through school, all the doctors and nurses when he was sick or in the hospital and all the people who helped us access services to make sure he had what he needed to be healthy and active.

To all of David’s roommates, Rehoboth and all of the staff that worked with David through his life – you are not just people who cared for him; to us and David, you are also… Family.

In lieu of flowers please send donations to Rehoboth Christian Ministries, 340 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB T1J 3L7, The Lung Association, #208, 17420 Stony Plain Rd. DYCK

Trenton Joel Dyck, age 13, beloved son of John and Jennifer Dyck of Picture Butte, Alberta, entered the presence of his Lord and Saviour on February 7, 2018.

He is survived by his parents, sister Kallie, and brothers Graham and Gareth.

Trenton was born on September 15, 2004. He was an active baby, toddler and boy, with a big, hearty laugh that made everyone else laugh with him. Early on, he set goals and showed a quiet determination in achieving them. He was inquisitive of the natural world around him and developed a keen interest in reading science-related books, encyclopedias and textbooks, along with action adventure and science fiction novels. He read voraciously and often curled up in his dad’s reclining chair, deeply engrossed in a book. Many hours were also spent building Lego, having outdoor adventures and playing games with his siblings, riding his bike and playing outside with his neighborhood friends. He also treasured numerous fishing trips and outings with his best friend’s family.

Trenton accepted Jesus as his personal Saviour when he was six years old, and had a deep, quiet faith in his resurrected Lord. He often volunteered to help his mom with any kitchen chores, cooking and baking. He served his family and helped with children’s ministries at his home church, and in the community.

Trenton was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive and advanced cancer in late October 2017. He was cared for at home by his family, then spent the last 12 days in Lethbridge Regional Hospital in Pediatric Palliative Care. He endured many months of suffering and looked forward to seeing Jesus face to face. Trenton was able to make a wish through the Children’s Wish Foundation, and donated the amount to Compassion Canada – Haiti – Water, Sanitation and Hygiene project, so that children in Haiti will be able to have access to clean water. His vision was that others will come on board and help raise funds for this project so that people can be helped not only with their physical problems, but that they can hear and respond to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

A Celebration of Trenton’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, at the Coaldale MB Church, 2114 – 18th Street, Coaldale, AB. Private burial will be held prior to the service at the Coaldale Community Cemetery. Viewing will be held Monday, February 12th, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Christensen Salmon Funeral Home, 703 – 13th St. N., Lethbridge, AB.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Compassion Canada – Trenton’s Wish, https://compassion.ca/trentons-wish.
