Mitchell

It is with heavy hearts that the children of James (Jim) Wallace Mitchell announce his passing. He passed away peacefully in his home at Vista Village in Pincher Creek on Wednesday November 30th. He had family at his bedside and a picture of his sweetheart Lyla with him on the bed.

Jim was born on May 22, 1931 in Christie Mines south of Pincher Creek. He lost his father at a very young age and moved to Claresholm where his mom found work with the telephone company. He excelled at school, but had to quit part way through high school to go to work.

Jim met Lyla at a dance in Waterton one fateful night. They became sweethearts, then newlyweds and were inseparable for 63 years until he passed away just four months ago.

They moved around a little but settled in Pincher Creek where they raised their 6 children and lived the balance of their lives.

Jim was known for his mischievous sense of humour and his love of reading, especially the news and historical nonfiction. He was well known as an amateur historian, in particular with regards to the history of the Pincher Creek area. In retirement, he shared this with the community as a volunteer at the local museum. He was very proud to be a member of the Oddfellows Lodge, especially of the charitable and civic minded activities and causes they engaged in and supported. Hockey was a passion of his as a player, coach, manager, Zamboni driver, hockey dad, and Gordie Howe fan.

Jim was predeceased by his father Charles and mother Margaret (Peggy) and his stepfather William Currie. He is survived by his brothers Lawrence and William and sisters Gail and Mary, children Ken, Chuck (Monica), Frances [formerly Lorraine] (Dieuwertje), Carol (Hugh), Brent and Ian (Katy). She is also survived by grandchildren Kate (Chad), Tess (Ross), Sadie, Thomas, Tina (Chris), Rachelle (Steve), Shaen (Eric), and great grandchildren Jordan, Jace, and Megan.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, December 5, 2016 at The Pincher Creek United Church, 972 Police Avenue, Pincher Creek, AB with Judith Walker Officiting.

Memorial Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta, 402, 740 4th Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 0N9 or the Canadian Mental Health Association, 426 6th Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 2C9.

Once again, the Mitchell family would like to extend our most deeply felt gratitude possible to all the staff of Vista Village. The loving care they provided Mom and Dad in their last years and the lengths they went to in allowing them to share the same room until the very end will never be forgotten by our family. Thank you so much.

OUGHTRED John Russell

Russell died suddenly and unexpectedly at his home in Vancouver on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at the age of 69 years. Russell is survived by his loving wife, Elisabeth (Betty Sommerville), his mother Runa, his brother Clifford and wife Margot, his nephew Ryan, and other extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Aulay.

Born in Moncton, Russell was raised in West Vancouver, attended West Van High and obtained his degree in philosophy at Bishop’s University in Quebec. But his real interest was always journalism and he began his career in the 70s at the Medicine Hat News. He moved to the Lethbridge Herald, and then to television news at CTV in Lethbridge and Calgary. In the late eighties he was hired by CBC TV News in Calgary where he continued his own unique style of storytelling with his deep and distinctive voice. A natural journalist, he delighted in telling the story of his first job with the Medicine Hat News. The editor asked Russell during his interview if he had been to journalism school. When he answered no, it turned out to be the right answer since his new boss wanted nothing to do with a graduate with any preconceived ideas.

CBC News closed its station in Calgary in the late 90s. He returned to Vancouver, where his heart always belonged and took on his final news position with Shaw TV’s community news. Russell met Betty soon after he arrived in Vancouver. They married on February 14th and were blessed with 19 devoted and happy years together. He spent his later years volunteering for the Crane Resource Centre at UBC, where he voice recorded textbooks and educational materials for blind students.

Russell was a kind and gentle man. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. At his request, he will be cremated and there will be no special service.

LOWE

Eldred Alfred Lowe, 84, of Pincher Creek passed away peacefully at the Pincher Creek Health Center with family by his side on December 5, 2016.

Eldred was born March 5,1932 in Albright, Alberta to Chester and Thelma Lowe. He is survived by his wife Eva Campbell; his four sons, Rick, Randy (Lori), Brad (Jeannie), David (Sheila); 8 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sisters Audrey (Gordon) and Shirley; brother Ronnie (Elaine); sister-in-law Jennie; Eva’s sons Barry and Jim; daughter Cheryl (Greg) and their two children; as well as many loving nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was predeceased by his first wife, Gladys; daughter-in-law Debbie; and brother Darcy.

Eldred was first and foremost a very proud father, grandfather and great grandfather.

After finishing school, he moved north to work in the mines but wanting to be closer to home and family he moved back to Vegreville and started farming. After just a few years farming, he decided that working for UGG as a grain buyer and the steady pay cheque to help raise his family was a much better fit. He moved to postings at Heinsburg, Mannville, Grande Prairie and Lethbridge. Then in 1971 he settled his family in Pincher Creek as the Co-operators Insurance agent. Dad enjoyed volunteering in the community in countless ways, with the Heritage Acres elevator being a particular passion. He served on many boards including the United Church board and had a term as Mayor of Pincher Creek when he was honored by the Peigan Nation with the traditional name of “White Buffalo”. Dad was always willing to lend a hand where needed.

Dad was a dedicated father of four boys that loved to play hockey and he followed and supported each one of them either as a coach or a cheering parent. He was a very kind, considerate and patient man whom we admired very much. He was truly a wonderful mentor to us all and we will miss him dearly.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at the Pincher Creek United Church, 972 Police Ave, Pincher Creek, AB T0K 1W0

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Pincher Creek United Church Endowment Fund, P.O. Box 667, Pincher Creek, AB T0K 1W0 or Windy Slopes Health Foundation, P.O. Box 2554, Pincher Creek, AB T0K 1W0

Scott Francis McCray, dear husband of Pat McCray of Bow Island, passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at the age of 55 years following a brief illness.   Scott will be remembered by his wife, Pat; daughter, Bailey both of Bow Island; son, Miles (Ashleigh) of Medicine Hat and his most favorite person in the world – his granddaughter, Mekah (and her mom, Jessy). Also cherishing his memory are his brothers, Allan (Luanne) of Abu Dhabi and their son, Stephen of Seattle, Glenn and his son, Caden of Lethbridge; father-in-law, Tom Yates of Lethbridge as well as Pat’s siblings, Russel (Rochelle) of Coaldale, Shelly and her daughter, Kaelin of Benalto and Murray (Jayne) and their sons, Clayton and Rohdy of Carseland. Peter Macht

1926 – 2016

Peter Macht of Coaldale, beloved husband of Johanna, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at the age of 90 years. Besides his loving wife, Peter is survived by his son Hans Guenther (Ursula) and his daughter Lorraine (Darryl) Kastner; grandsons Jeremy (Elaine), Jonathan (Amy), Braeden (Jessica) and Matthew; great-grandchildren Rowan and Cooper; sisters Rose Rickert and Lydia (Norbert) Franke; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Peter was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Magdalena Macht; brothers Emmanuel, Leo and Josef; and his dear daughter Marilyn.

Peter was born Nov.9, 1926 in Koehler, Russia along the Volga River. At a young age his family relocated to Germany and together they emigrated to Canada in 1953. He met and married the love of his life Johanna in 1954. They welcomed children in 1955, 1959 and 1966. Building was his passion. Trained in carpentry he worked for Pahulje Construction and later Kenwood Engineering and Construction of Lethbridge, supervising and contributing to many landmarks in and around the City of Lethbridge. Peter was committed to helping others and being involved, he was a member of the Catholic School Board for 12 years. Blessed with grandchildren he became a fixture at the ball diamonds, hockey rinks, soccer and football fields around southern Alberta to spend as much quality time with them as possible. Once retired, Peter continued with his passion: building, renovating and fixing things. He was a hard-working and loving man, consistently displaying patience, kindness and honesty. The loss of his oldest daughter in 2012 was heart-breaking, but God saw it to lessen his pain with the addition of great-grandchildren. His leisure time with Hanna was again joyful as he doted on the ‘next’ generation. Peter’s faith and strength would yet again be tested with the sudden onset of his recent illness. He persevered through many physiotherapy sessions, striving to regain his physical strength. We will carry his love and memory forever in our hearts and will miss him dearly.

Prayers will be held at 7:00pm on Thursday December 15, 2016 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4 St. S., Lethbridge, AB.

COTTON

It is with great sorrow to announce the passing of the beloved JENNIFER COTTON, who passed away peacefully in her home on the Blood Reserve, surrounded by her family on December 10th, 2016, at the age of 51.

“Jenn” is survived by her husband of 30 years, Oscar; three daughters: Amanda (Mark), Lesley (Tristan), and Samantha; and her two grandchildren Illiana Grace and Jacob Nelson. She also leaves behind her father Norman (Bev) Stelter; sisters Joy (Bob), Marcia, Donna, and Donna Marie; brothers: Ed, Mac (Shawna), Dwayne, Noel, and Francis, and other beloved relatives.

Jenn was born in Cardston, Alberta on February 22nd, 1965. She would, however, spend most of her childhood growing up in the Crowsnest Pass with her parents Norman and Lola Stelter. Growing up, Jenn took interest in cross country running, and curling, which she would play with family in her spare time. At the highlight of her curling career, she had won the Alberta Winter Games, earning her a curling scholarship to the Lethbridge Community College.

Soon after moving to Lethbridge for school, she met the love of her life, Oscar Cotton, whom she married in 1986. Together they raised three daughters in Lethbridge, later relocating to the Blood Reserve. Jenn was delighted to become a grandmother, first to Illiana in 2010, and again to Jacob in 2015. Family was a priority, and everyone remained very close, despite living in different cities. After settling in to start her family, Jenn took up playing Slo-pitch, and was very proud to have gone on to play in the SPN Nationals in 1999, in Abbotsford BC. She would later enjoy a new hobby in playing pool, of which she played in a league for many years, and enjoyed travelling with her husband and youngest daughter, Sam, to Las Vegas for the World VNEA Championships for many years. Oscar was a referee for the tournaments, with Jenn usually just a spectator, but she was very proud to been able to play with a team in the spring of 2016. At the time of her diagnosis of cancer, Jenn had been working with Canadian Linen in Lethbridge.

Jenn was a beautiful soul. To know her was to love her. Jenn was selfless, and always strived to treat others the way she would want to be treated. She was best known for her beautiful smile, her joyous laugh, and silly sense of humour. Jenn will be missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to have known her. She always remained positive and happy, even in illness. Jenn always had a smile that could cheer you up, even after the worst day.

Jenn was predeceased by her mother, Lola Stelter; her biological parents Donald Rides at the Door and Bertha Eagle Child; among others who are dearly missed.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Westside Community Church, 480 – McMaster Blvd., Lethbridge on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.
