THERON GALE SOMMERFELDT

(1923 – 2020)

Theron Gale Sommerfeldt passed away peacefully on June 18, 2020, at the age of 97, concluding a full and rewarding life, whose central focus was his family. A beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he will be dearly missed by his five loving children, Don (Susan), Drew (Valerie), Craig (Sharon), Scott (Lisa) and Tana (Jerry Buss), his foster daughter, Diana Baptiste, his 19 grandchildren, his 46 great-grandchildren, his sisters Venice Harris, Elna Hall and Joy Chatterton, his sisters-in-law Kae Jolley, Dorothy Francis, Carol Francis and Joan Francis, his brothers-in-law Bob Patey and Jack Francis, and many other extended-family members.

Born on May 27, 1923 in Cardston, Alberta, Theron was the fifth child of William and Ella Sommerfeldt, with whom he is now reunited. He has also rejoined his sisters Vergie, Zelda and Karma, his brothers Rae and Karl, and his daughter-in-law Marci.

Having been raised in Glenwood, Whisky Gap, Taylorville, Caldwell and Cardston, Alberta, and having spent many summers herding cattle, cutting wood, and fishing near Glenwood or Beaver Mines and selling vegetables in Waterton, Theron loved being outdoors, particularly in the foothills and mountains. His true enjoyment of camping, fishing and hunting began as a young father, as he took his children and grandchildren on numerous camping and fishing trips.

Horses were a large part of Theron’s life. In his youth, his family depended on horses for transportation, work and pleasure. As an adult, as circumstances permitted, Theron generally owned at least one, and often several, horses, which he kept on his own land or rented pastures. He was happy in the saddle, particularly on the many trail rides that he took with family and friends in the foothills and mountains.

Having thoroughly enjoyed scouting as a youth, his commitment to scouting continued into adulthood. For many years, he served in Scouts Canada, providing leader training and holding several administrative positions.

After serving as an RCAF instrument mechanic in England during World War II, Theron took advantage of the Veterans Bill to obtain a university education. He earned a BSc in soil science at the University of Alberta in 1950, and an MSc in soil physics and a PhD in soil physical chemistry at Utah State University in 1952 and 1961 respectively. During his career as an agronomist, he worked at universities and agricultural research stations in Logan, Utah; Fargo, North Dakota; Aberdeen, Idaho; and Lethbridge. He was a respected researcher, who published numerous scientific papers. He worked on several international assignments, most notably in Egypt, where Delores accompanied him.

An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Theron served in a variety of callings over the years. Highlights of his church service were the 18-month mission that he and Delores fulfilled in Austria in 1990-92, and their service for many years as ordinance workers in the Cardston Alberta Temple.

GARY KIRK

APRIL 1933 – JULY 2020

Gary Kirk parlayed his father’s dream into a successful tire store enterprise, but it was the meaningful and lasting relationships he cultivated along the way that were truly a measure of his riches.

Those friendships allowed Gary to enjoy experiences beyond the wildest dreams of most, and far-removed from his humble beginnings. He passed away in hospital July 3 with family at his side, at the age of 87. Even as his health failed and his final days approached, Gary had no regrets and shed no tears. This was only fitting for the self-proclaimed “luckiest man in the world.”

Gary idolized his father, Bill, who founded Kirks Tires in 1936 and later welcomed him as a business partner. While entertainment royalty and professional sports team owners called him the best of friends, it was his loving wife of almost 60 years, Loreen, whom he considered the most important person in his life. If there was ever such a thing as the perfect wife, Gary was sure she fit the bill. Not only did they have three sons together, Loreen offered Gary the unbending support and freedom that allowed him so many adventures and resulted in so many friendships. Loreen passed away in 2012, and as his time ticked down Gary relished the prospect of their pending reunion.

Along with Loreen, Gary was predeceased by his parents and his sister Barbara Bosnak. He is survived by his sister Bonnie, his three sons, Richard, Kevin and Brad, and their extended families.

Born in Swift Current, Gary moved to Lethbridge with his father before he returned to Saskatchewan to attend Notre Dame School. Prior to joining Bill at the tire shop, his first jobs included baggage boy with Greyhound Bus Lines and newspaper delivery with the Lethbridge Herald. Other than Loreen, Gary’s greatest passion was the tire business. He saw the respect his father had earned in the industry and he in turn loved the relationships he was able to foster with his suppliers, his customers and his staff, many of whom he considered family.

Gary’s most public friendship dated back almost 60 years, when he met a teenaged Wayne Newton after a concert. Gary would see ‘Mr. Las Vegas’ perform hundreds of times as his guest over the years, but he was much more than a fan. He served as best man at Wayne’s wedding, and the entertainer not only performed two benefit concerts in Lethbridge on his friend’s behalf, he brought Gary and Loreen to dine with the President of the United States and flew the couple to important medical appointments in his private jet. The hard work Wayne put into every performance inspired Gary to be a better businessman, husband and father and treat every friend like his closest.

Gary’s involvement in sports also provided him with many lasting friendships. While he never considered himself a gifted athlete he would serve as a scout for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League, due in part to his relationship with Earl Ingarfield. Gary was also co-owner of the Lethbridge Broncos. His time as business manager for George Wesley’s White Sox senior baseball team in the late 1950s saw him bring north many U.S. college players. Among those was a young Steve Schott, who would go on to become an extremely successful businessman and one-time owner of the Oakland Athletics Major Baseball League franchise. Their relationship took deep roots and continued a lifetime, with Steve flying Gary and Loreen to numerous games to join him in watching his A’s in action, including an appearance in the World Series.

Gary’s many contributions to the community were also recognized over the years, and he was awarded a Key to the City of Lethbridge in 2010.

At Gary’s request, no public funeral service is planned. In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the Humane Society, Gary’s heartfelt charity since the passing of Loreen and her puppy Pecos.

Rosina Marie Mucciarone

1937 – 2020

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rosina Marie Mucciarone (nee D’Agnone) of Lethbridge, AB. With her family by her side, she passed peacefully at Chinook Regional Hospital on Friday, July 3, 2020, at 83 years of age.

Mom was born on March 30, 1937, in Civitanova Del Sanio, Provincia Compobassa, Italy. On April 14, 1948, at the age of 11, Mom immigrated with her parents, Giovanni and Filomena, and seven siblings to Canada. Upon arriving in Lethbridge, Mom’s family was met by her grandparents, Nicola and Maria, and resided with Nick Virginillo’s family for a brief time before moving to Readymade. After several months, Mom moved to the homestead in Judson with her family where she remained until she was married. Mom attended school in Wrentham with her favorite classes being Home Economics and Physical Education. She thoroughly enjoyed playing basketball and participating in track and field.

At the tender age of 15, Mom met the love of her life for the first time when Dad (Nick), an Italian immigrant new to Canada, visited the Giachetta farm. As the years went by, Dad continued to watch Mom grow with a twinkle in his eye, and when the time was right, he proposed. Wedding bells rang on October 25, 1958, at St. Patrick’s Church in Lethbridge. Mom and Dad celebrated 60 years of marriage on October 25, 2019, before Dad’s passing, a true testimony of their dedication to one another and their family.

Though Mom’s talents were many, her nearly 18 years of service with Ducan Industries Ltd. showcased her skill as a seamstress. She loved working with fabric and creating beautiful drapes. However, Mom’s greatest passion was her family and friends. No one knew the value of self-sacrifice like Mom. For the entirety of her life, she worked tirelessly to provide her family and friends with the best of everything. Whether preparing an Italian or Canadian feast, a batch of bread and buns, or a picnic lunch for a trip to Waterton, Mom poured love into her food. Her kitchen was her sanctuary, the place she felt most proud, because she knew her meals would bring her family together. Around Mom and Dad’s table, some of the greatest memories were made sharing stories and laughs, playing cards, or reminiscing about Disneyland, Las Vegas, and Hawaii, three of Mom’s favourite family trips. Closer to home, Mom would travel to all of her grandchildren’s music recitals or sporting events, beaming with pride next to Dad. Mom’s newest joy was the seeing and holding her two great grandchildren born this past year.

A great model of hospitality and generosity, anyone arriving at her door was greeted with a bright smile, offered a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, along with a homemade treat. Even a quick visit would often end with, “What can I give you?”. God gifted Mom with hands of service whether in the form of a meal or a prayerful embrace. Each and every day, she would read the bible and pray earnestly for her family and those in need. She was an active member of St. Basil’s Catholic Church community, serving as a Catholic Women’s League member for 20 years. Mom would often say that Jesus was her best friend, and her faith journey role modeled the importance of God in one’s life.

Mom will be dearly missed by her family and friends, but the memories we have of her will last a lifetime. Her infectious smile, peppy spirit, and sincerity of heart gave us all a chance to witness what it meant to enjoy a full life, one walked with the Lord, grateful for His many blessings.

Mom was predeceased by her husband, Nicola (Nick), her parents Giovanni and Filomena D’Agnone, her brothers Dominic, Nick, and Joe D’Agnone, her sister Mary Caruso, nephews Ben D’Agnone and Tom Caruso, and infant grandson, James Snodgrass. She is also predeceased by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Giovanni and Assunta Mucciarone, brother-in-laws Antonio Mucciarone, Graziano Altieri, and Joe Caruso, and sister-in-law Yola Mucciarone.

Mom is survived by her son Rino (Luann) Mucciarone of Lethbridge and their children Cassie (Brett) Skauge, Ryan (girlfriend Phoebe) and Mathew; daughter Rita (Howard) Snodgrass of Medicine Hat and their children Jaimie (Iain) Purcell and Joel Snodgrass (girlfriend Kira), and the two newest editions, great grandson, Domenico Purcell and great granddaughter, Everly Skauge.

Mom is also survived by her brothers Luigi (Bev) D’Agnone of Wrentham and Tony (Laurie) D’Agnone of Skiff/Foremost; her sisters Delores (Phillip) Gurr of Diamond City and Amelia (Ken) Rollag of Lethbridge; sister-in-laws Assunta D’Agnone of Coaldale, Pat D’Agnone of Lethbridge, Antionetta Mucciarone and Palmina Altieri of Pennsylvania, Rosetta Mucciarone of Italy; step mother-in law Anna Mucciarone of Italy; brother-in-law Mario Mucciarone of Italy, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to sincerely thank all the doctors, especially Dr. Lowe, Dr. Wilde, and Dr. Walsh, as well as the ICU and 4B nursing staff for their kindness, compassion, and genuine concern for Mom’s wellbeing.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Rosina’s name to the Jack Ady Cancer Centre, 960 – 19 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 1W5.

Due to the restrictions surrounding COVID 19, a private Funeral Mass will be held at St. Basil’s Roman Catholic Church, with Father Kevin Tumback, celebrant. Interment will take place at Mountain View Cemetery.

PICKEN
David passed away at St. Michael’s on July 3, 2020 at the age of 91 years.
This devilishly dashing man was David Lindsay Picken, but I knew him as “Grandpa” He was a proud Scot, (in his books, even God was a Scot), a loving husband, father and an absolutely magical grandfather. He was a revered math teacher, an attentive gardener, a talented painter, a passionate carpenter and a curious learner his entire life. He loved to tell stories of a life well lived; mangoes and a missed sighting of the Taj Mahal in pre-independence India, coming of age during World War ll in Glasgow, his national service in the RAF, and bravely moving his young family to Canada in 1966.
My childhood was filled with Scottish folk music, whittling wood, and going on safari for “exotic (dande)lions”. This cultivated my curiosity that inspired me to achieve a Ph.D. in history. I got his stubbornness and bravery to start anew in unknown lands.
When I as a child and something was broken, we’d ask “Grandpa fix?”, to which he would reply, “Yes pet, Grandpa fix”. I wish he could fix the hole in our hearts, but maybe he already has with his love and memories he gave us.
So raise a dram to Grandpa. And as “the Bard”, Robbie Burns wrote:
An honest man here lies at rest,
As e’er God with His image best,
The friend of man, the friend of truth;
The friend of age, and guide of youth:
Few hearts like his, with virtue warm’d
Few heads with knowledge inform’d
If there’s another world he lives in bliss;
If there is none, he made the best of this.
We’ll see you, when we see you Grandpa, Dad, David: love Audrey (the love of his life), Chris, Udo, Katja, Simone, Barbara, Tibor, and Avril.

Albert “Al” Albin Braden

November 8th, 1933

– July 4th, 2020 (86)

On Saturday July 4th, 2020, Al Braden went to be with the Lord. He passed away peacefully at St. Therese Villa after a long battle with dementia. His family takes great comfort in knowing Al lived life to the fullest.

Al was born at home on the farm in the Rural Municipality of Tullymet, Saskatchewan. Farm life was always near and dear to him and through the years the passion never disappeared. As a young boy, he also had a passion for building crystal radios. That fascination turned into a collection of over 400 antique radios which he proudly displayed in the basement of his Lethbridge home.

Al went to University in Regina before taking a job with the Royal Bank. He worked in approximately 14 Royal Bank branches throughout Saskatchewan. During this time, Al met and married Vera. They had a reluctance of moving too far from family, which led Al to accept a job with the Alberta based Treasury Branch. After 17 years with the Treasury Branch, Al was approached by a company looking for leadership. This had him moving to Lethbridge, a place that he had fallen in love with years before.

In the mid 1980’s, Al decided to sell his company and retire. He never lost his passion for business, always looking for the next investment or organization to offer his talents. Al and Vera spent the next 30 years travelling Canada, United States, and the world covering all 7 continents.

Al was a pilot in his early years and loved to fly his family to visit friends and relatives. He was an avid curler and has many trophies to attest to this. He was involved with the United Church and at one time would even take on church services, when needed. Al was also active in the Elks, Masonic Lodges, Kinsmen and Rotary Clubs, to name a few. He sponsored children abroad and was on the board of directors for several organizations, including the Lethbridge Therapeutic Riding Association. Al was a humanitarian, always serving the community donating his time and efforts.

Al will be joining his wife Vera Braden in heaven, as well as his parents and Vera’s parents: Bronie and Jean Braden, Milton and Ethel Saunders; brothers Stanley Braden, Ted Braden; brother-in-law David Moleski, Wilmer Saunders, Bill Forester; sisters-in-law Evelyn Braden, Irene Braden and Betty Braden.

Missing Al’s smile and humour are sons: Doug (Lori) Braden, Ray Braden; daughter Brenda Griffiths; grandchildren Amy (Jeff) MacDonald, Becky Griffiths, Denyse (Matt) Welsch, Andrew (Lacey) Murney; great grand-children Clark and Arthur MacDonald, Peyton and Avery Welsch; sister Ella Moleski; brother Arnold (Celina) Braden, brother in-law Frelan (Donna) Saunders; sister-in-law Fern Forester; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Visitation will be held on Monday July 13, 2020. To assist in social distancing there will be two different times: Friends at 6:00 – 7:00 PM and Family at 7:00 – 8:00 PM.

Due to the restrictions in place – by the Chief Medical Officer of Health – Funeral Services are now limited in size.

A private family service will be held.

Although we cannot have all of Al’s family and friends attend in person, those who would like to watch the service online can do so at 1:00 pm, on Tuesday, July 14, 2020, by going to http://www.mbfunerals.com and clicking on Al’s obituary. The service will be on-line for a few days to allow everyone to attend virtually or watch at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honour Al’s memory are encouraged to donate in his name to the Lethbridge Therapeutic Riding Association, 24 205015 Hwy 512, Lethbridge County, Alberta T1J 5N8 or Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories, #306, 10430 – 61 Avenue, Edmonton, AB T6H 2J3.

The family are grateful beyond words for the warmth and compassion shown by the staff St. Therese Villa.

Phyllis Dedekam

1927 – 2020

Mrs. Phyllis Dedekam of Lethbridge, formerly of Taber, beloved wife of the late Mr. Hans Dedekam, passed away at St. Therese Villa on Monday, July 6, 2020, at the age of 93 years.

Born on April 22, 1927, in Taber, Alberta to Ole and Muriel Jespersen, Phyllis spent her youth in Taber attending grade school. Following her high school graduation (1945/1946), Phyllis attended Mt. Royal College in Calgary to obtain her Commerce Diploma.

Phyllis worked for a short time for T. Eaton Company. She joined TransCanada Air Lines in Lethbridge and later transferred to Washington, D.C. with United Airlines. She was later hired by Scandinavian Airlines to assist opening a new office in Washington, D.C. in 1950.

Phyllis met her husband Hans J Dedekam, also with Scandinavian Airlines in New York. They were married on October 20, 1952, in Washington and moved to New York. She worked with Radio Free Europe until they moved as a couple to open a new office and service in Montreal for Scandinavian Airlines in 1954. She worked alongside her husband until 1959 and during that five-year period she assisted the opening of the SAS Offices in Toronto and Winnipeg. Their travels took them to Europe, South America, and Asia.

Phyllis terminated her career to begin their family with the birth of their son Eric on March 6, 1959. They had frequent get-togethers with the Taber families and the Norwegian families in Taber, Oslo, Norway, or the cottage in Ste. Agathe, Quebec.

Phyllis had a creative spirit which she nurtured through initially rya-rug making and then weaving. Many a home was decorated with her weaving works or those of her students. Her own homes became workshops for her weaving looms.

Phyllis, with her husband Hans, returned to Lethbridge in 1982 and enjoyed many fine years in Southern Alberta. She rekindled old friendships, made new friends and enjoyed hiking and golfing. She enjoyed her lunches at the Lethbridge Country Club. She truly valued her Jespersen family and appreciated the many family gatherings.

In her later years, Phyllis developed a loving and caring relationship with Donald Stewart. As ailments and frailty set in, their bond gave them both much comfort.

Besides her loving husband Hans, Phyllis was predeceased by her parents Ole and Muriel Jespersen and brother Clarence Jespersen.

She is survived by her son Eric Dedekam, daughter-in-law Josée (Gravel) and grandchildren, Charles and Elise.

DARYL THOMPSON

July 15, 1951 – July 10, 2020

This man was not a saint, nor was he a paragon of virtue. Daryl was a quiet man who gave freely of his time and energy to his family, his work and his community. He did not seek attention or accolades but just showed up to help. Daryl started his career in farming and this remained his first love. He was a man who loved the prairie sky, a mountain range and an ocean shore. He was happiest when he was with family and friends and never tired of visiting and being with the people he cared about. He enjoyed using his quick and sharp humour but never was he hurtful or unkind. He was a gentleman and it was such fun making him blush.

This man had a gentle and giving soul so supporting and helping others was part of his nature. He was involved with numerous organizations but the dog community benefited most from his efforts. Always, he was there to volunteer, work hard, visit with people and their dogs. Standard Poodles, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Border Collie became members of the household but there would always be room for visitor or two. Grooming dogs became a “Zen” experience for Daryl and his gentle touch meant that the dogs shared the “Zen”.

This man was smart and a problem solver. There was always a project going on in the house and his most common expression was, “If we want to do it right…” and right it would be done. Daryl became an artist with stained glass and was able to leave a window in each home he owned as a mark of his skill and artistry.

This man did not wish for a lavish funeral. He would have preferred burgers and beers at the Legion where he was a member for over 30 years. How we wished we could make that happen but Pandemic restrictions prevail. We do invite you to join us to celebrate his kind and gentle soul in the NIKKA YUKO JAPANESE GARDENS on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at 3:00 P.M. We celebrate his life and the gifts he gave us. He taught us all to enjoy those gifts and always to be grateful for this wonderful world. This man was truly loved by his wife, family and friends.

At the Daryl’s request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lethbridge Humane Society (https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities /id/41192/) or a charity of your choice.

Predeceased by her husband, Vernon Arnold in 2010, Aldean is lovingly remembered by her children Dean (Angie), Donna (George) Newman, Doug (Tami) and Dan (Lindy). She will be forever carried in the hearts of her 10 grandchildren, Blake (Kennedy) Andrus, Mackenzie, Cade, Tanner, Ashlynn, Amy and Devyn Arnold, Jack, Tim and Mitchell Newman, and 1 great granddaughter, Kynlee Andrus.

Aldean is also survived by her sisters, Marjorie (Don) Karl, Doreen Jurgens, Pearl Wolfe (Dick Murphy), Faye (Floyd) Orcutt and her brothers, Larry Wolfe and John (Val) Wolfe as well as her brother-in-law Keith (Diane) Arnold and sister-in-law Norma (Wally) Janser. She was predeceased by one brother, Robert Wolfe and 2 sister-in-laws, Shirley Wolfe and Carol McIvor. Born on May 5, 1944 to Leo Wolfe and Doris Morgan, Aldean was raised with her 7 siblings on a farm south of Foremost, Alberta. She married Vern in 1962 and together they raised their children in Foremost while volunteering tirelessly for the community. Aldean was the Southern Alberta Summer Games athlete co-ordinator for the County of Forty Mile for many years, coached slow-pitch and was a long-time member of the Foremost United Church. She worked for Canada Post for over 25 years, retiring in 2011. She moved to Parkbridge Estates in Lethbridge in 2012.

Mom’s passion was sports. She would try any of them but particularly loved playing slow-pitch with her women’s teams and was a keen track and field competitor, winning many medals in the Summer Games over the years. That competitive spirit was passed down to her children and grandchildren and she spent many happy hours cheering them on in hockey, basketball, softball, and volleyball. Mom was never happier than when she was surrounded by her family or dear friends. She loved people and was well-loved in return.

Her battle with Lupus and Pulmonary Fibrosis was one she fought with courage and dignity. Her family extends sincere thanks to Dr. Charlene Fell and nurse clinician Kirk Mathison for their tireless efforts to give us more time with Mom and also to the Lethbridge Home Care and CBI team for making Mom’s last days as comfortable as possible. As well, we thank her dear friends Bonnie and Joyce, her neighbours at Parkbridge Estates and many others who supported Mom so well over the years.

DONALDSON

It is with broken hearts that the family of GEORGIA GAYE DONALDSON announce her passing at the Chinook Regional Hospital, on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at the age of 71 years.

Georgia is survived by her two sons, Corey of Lethbridge and Chris (Marnie) of West Vancouver BC; much loved grandchildren, Zoe and Jax Donaldson of West Vancouver BC; sister Ger (Derrick) Blasco of Surrey, BC and their children, Brad and Heather; and very special Aunt Louise Collar (Aunt Booie) of Fort Macleod.

Georgia was one of those people who made everyone feel special and loved, and in turn she had many, many friends the world over. But some of her ‘special girls’ were Sonia (Don) Fields, Judy Matlock and Donna Wiebe, whom she loved as family. She was close to Courtney and Lindsay Field and Amy Harris, to whom she was their ‘Aunt Georgia’. Georgia was predeceased by her parents, George and Gladys (Pearson) Milley, brother Gary Milley, grandparents George and Sadie (McNeil) Milley and Stewart and Emily (Pike) Milley as well as many aunts and uncles and very special uncle Jim Collar.

A kind and generous soul who will be greatly missed, Georgia was born on January 28, 1949 in Fort Macleod Alberta to George and Gladys (Pearson) Milley. After she graduated from Fort Macleod High School she went to University in Victoria, BC. Georgia worked for many years at the Dept.of Environment in Lethbridge before going to work as a Manager at Training Inc where she stayed for 25 years. Our life will never be the same without our very dear mother, sister, niece and loving friend who was truly in charge of the whole family. Georgia has crossed over to the other shore to live in peace forever more.

Thank you to Dr.Smutz, Dr.Roth, Dr.Walsh and all the wonderful nurses in 4B who took such loving care of her in her final days.

At Georgia’s request, no formal funeral will be held.

Aldean Arnold

1944 – 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of Aldean Rae Arnold announces her passing on Thursday, July 9th, 2020 after a lengthy illness.

Her passing is also mourned by her dear friend Arnold Bodie and his family, numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and beloved friends.

Please consider, in lieu of flowers, a donation to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation in Mom’s name.

A celebration of Aldean’s life will be announced and held at a future date as soon as we can all safely gather together.

They were very close, doing everything together, and after 63 years of marriage still inseparable to the end.

They made their home in a few places before settling down at the Barnes house where Norma was raised. Aylmer drove truck for Noble Blades and their first home was a small house by the elevators in Nobleford. In 1957 he worked for the Alberta Wheat Pool, first in Nobleford, then Taber and finally Turin. In 1958 they lived in Lethbridge until moving back to Nobleford where Aylmer helped his Dad farm. Later that year they moved into the farm home where Aylmer was raised. In the fall of 1961, they settled in the home where they were married and where they lived and farmed for 59 years. They had five children … Layne, Brant, Sherry, Barry and Carol Ann.

When not farming Aylmer loved to go fishing with his family. He enjoyed drawing and leather work, making many belts for the kids. He and Norma very much enjoyed spending time with their children & grandchildren, and going to all their sporting, 4-H and musical activities.

Aylmer battled cancer and associated ailments for a number of years. Aylmer’s strong will and God’s hands carried him through these times. Even when he was getting quite weak, you would find him with his hand weights exercising in his chair, or pushing his walker trying to stay mobile.

Besides his loving wife and five children, Aylmer is survived by twelve grandchildren, Joshua, Jessica (Layne & Donna Baker); Jordan, Branden, Wyatt (Brant & Laurie Baker); Kyle, Darren, Evan (Sherry & Lawrence Vandervalk); Alysha, Joey (Barry & Teresa Baker); Kaylee, Colin (Carol Ann & Allen Zoeteman) and nine great-grandchildren. Aylmer was predeceased by his parents Harold and Inez.

A private Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2020 at the Granum Christian Reformed Church, with interment to follow at the Church Cemetery. Due to Chief Medical Officer of Health restrictions, Funeral Services are now limited in size.

Though we cannot have all of Aylmer’s family and friends attend in person, those who would like to watch the service can do so online by going to the Granum Christian Reformed Church YouTube Channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCs0yVlMAC_bnTpqX8Ch0xfA.

Ernie Block

1926 – 2020

Ernest Edward Block of Lethbridge passed away suddenly on May 13, 2020 at the age of 94.

Ernie was born in Medicine Hat to Marie and Gustav Block on March 15, 1926. He grew up in a home with musically talented parents and became a multitalented musician at an early age, mastering numerous instruments throughout his life.

Although Ernie was best known for his musical abilities, he had many athletic abilities as well and was an avid sports fan of baseball and hockey. At the age of 17 years he was making a name for himself in baseball and was professionally scouted but chose to continue with his academic and musical interests.

Ernie graduated from Alexander High School in Medicine Hat and went on to get his teaching degrees at the University of Alberta and University of Missoula. He taught for a total of 35 years. He was the first Grade 8 typing teacher at Hamilton Junior High in Lethbridge for 29 years until his retirement.

His retirement from teaching allowed him to devote himself to his passion – music.

Ernie was involved in music from an early age. He had his own orchestra from the early 50s to the early 60s – The Ernie Block Orchestra. He started with the Lethbridge Big Band in 1963. Throughout his musical career he also participated in the Lethbridge Playgoers and Lethbridge Musical Theatre. He played in many different bands in Southern Alberta. He was an accomplished musical arranger (wrote his first arrangement at age 12) and copyist sharing his arrangements with many in Canada and the U.S. Ernie enjoyed volunteering his time helping with the Junior high and high school Jazz bands at lunch or after hours. He jokingly would say he “never had a day off”

Ernie received a tribute from Lethbridge Jazz Society for outstanding contributions to the Music Community of Southern Alberta for 50 years.

Ernie had a very upbeat personality and loved to acknowledge his appreciation of music. In his later years he would attend concerts and productions and marvel at the talent that was right here in Lethbridge.

At the time of his passing, Ernie was still actively involved playing bass with the Herb Hicks quartet as well as playing with the Dixieland band for the Horse Races at the Rocky Mountain Turf Club. He was looking forward to the next gig at the Mocha Cabana and for the Horse Racing to start up again.

Ernie was still living independently in his own home, driving his own vehicle, (one of the oldest members of Alberta Motor Association) and was looking forward to a regular tee time at the Lethbridge Country Club. During his 44-year membership he had scored 2 hole in ones.

Ernie was predeceased by second wife Marg Forish (2018) and son Douglas Block (1998).

He is survived by former wife Jean Buxton (Edmonton) and children Allan (Carol Flaig) Lethbridge, Brenda (Ken Greenan) Edmonton, Carol (Art Riendeau) Edmonton, Marg Forish’s daughter Deb (Klaus Santrau) Lethbridge; grandchildren Keane Block, Amanda (Derrek Hansen and great grandson Sawyer) Patrick Riendeau, Tori Greenan and Josh Halldorson.

Ernie touched many lives and as much as the family would enjoy a public gathering to honor his memory, due to Covid restrictions we are unable.

A private family service will be held, and a public Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date when restrictions are lifted.

The funeral service will be recorded for all to view on Martin Brothers obituary website. https://www.fhwebsites.org/ymb/ymb/obituary/Ernie-Block.

During this time, she met John, the love of her life, at the local curling rink. After a short courtship they were married, recently celebrating their 64th wedding anniversary. John’s work in the oilfield took them across several provinces. They lived in many small towns from Estevan to Fort St. John and many places in between. They eventually settled in Vauxhall in 1961, where Velma became a pillar of the community. She enjoyed 25 years working at the Vauxhall Pharmacy. She was active in the UCW group and the Presbytery of the United Church. She was a devoted member of Parkview United Church, serving on the board and leading CGIT. She loved curling and participating in zone and provincial playdowns. She was a volunteer for many fundraisers and donated her time freely to community endeavors. She especially liked helping those who had mobility issues, offering to drive many friends and acquaintances to Lethbridge for appointments. Velma raised her children with patience, understanding and love. She actively followed their sports pursuits of figure skating, hockey, baseball, judo and curling. On the farm she grew a huge garden and preserved and froze the harvest. Her home was always open to others. There was always extra food and for sure something for dessert. For special occasions, she always made sure there were three or four pies to choose from. In 2000, John and Velma moved to Lethbridge. They enjoyed many trips down south and being a part of a new community. She continued with volunteering, liked golfing and walking and especially looked forward to coffee with friends. She lived her life with consideration and kindness. She believed strongly in service to others and making the world a better place.

She had been living at Extendicare Fairmont where she continued with her positive spirit and friendliness in supporting others. The family would like to thank all the staff for the care and assistance that Velma received.

Candi-Jo Van Ryn

1979 – 2020

Mrs. Candi-Jo Van Ryn of Coaldale, beloved wife of Mr. Jason “Jake” Van Ryn, and beloved mother of Jo-Lynn and Jaiden Kenney, passed away in Coaldale on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at the age of 40 years.

Candi-Jo was born in Magrath, Alberta where a love for the farm and country living began. She moved to Kerrville, Texas where she completed her secondary school, had her babies and entered the medical field. After some time, she moved back to Lethbridge with a southern charm and a very present “y’all.” Connecting with family, honouring her heritage, teaching the values, beliefs and traditions instilled in her by her grandparents, was so very important to her; and now, passed on for many generations to come. Candi-Jo had a contagious laugh, with a big beautiful grin, thrown in with a snort or two on occasion. She was steadfast and firm when needed, confident within her profession and highly skilled. With a nurse’s humour and an openness that was slightly shocking at times (yes Candi, I pooped today). She radiated warmth, was welcoming and accepting to all. In her quiet time, she cross stitched, tended her flowers, hosted game nights, had sleepovers with her baby niece, enjoyed cooking new and traditional recipes, laughing with her girls and spending time with her gentle husband, the love of her life in their Coaldale home.

With expressive green eyes – mischievous at times, lit with joy and shadowed with grief, she had so many losses along the way and a depth of pain we’ll never fully understand. And yet, she was determined and despite it all, she smiled. Choosing to live a simple life, a full life, with her husband, girls, friends and family by her side. She did so with tenderness and grace.

Candi-Jo was strong, she was fierce, an inspiration and unfortunately unaware of how many people she’s impacted and touched over the years. She had a quiet faith, shared dreams of Heaven while holding her grandmother’s hand and made a promise to see her again. She’s “Home”.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm on Sunday, July 19, 2020 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 STREET SOUTH, Lethbridge, Alberta.

A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 pm, on Monday, July 20, 2020 at MAGRATH CEMETERY, Magrath, Alberta with Pastor Mark Dyck, officiating.

Due to the restrictions in place from the Chief Medical Officer of Health – Funeral Services are now limited to 100 attendees. Including family and Funeral Home Staff.

She was predeceased by her husband George Virostek; parents Clifford and Florence Reynolds; daughter-in-law Wendy Virostek; brothers Roy Reynolds and Dennis Reynolds; sisters-in-law Lois Reynolds, Norma Reynolds and Irene Reynolds.
Shirley was born on the farm near Enchant on June 25, 1932, the youngest and only daughter of Clifford and Florence Reynolds. She graduated in Enchant, then attended Garbutts College in Lethbridge, graduating with honors. After six years of courtship, she married the love of her life George Virostek on October 10, 1953 and together they started the family farm. During her fifty seven years of marriage there were good times and hardships, but she enjoyed raising four boys, running cattle, farming, participating and watching all sport activities. Shirley continued to raise cattle until her passing and always looked forward to the round-ups, branding and especially selling of the calves.
Mom was proud to call the community of Enchant home. She was involved in every organization and board, always willing to lend a hand for the good of families, friends, faith and church. Shirley was known to have a strong voice, but was truly a loving, caring person who had the ability to make someone laugh. We can’t forget her love of music and dancing. Mom believed the love of family is life’s greatest blessing and she cherished the moments of family gatherings. She always enjoyed the company of her kids, grandkids and great grandkids around her. Knowing that mom made a difference in the lives of others is why she was a very special person and will be missed by all who knew her. We are so very proud of her. Our families will try to carry on your traditions and legacy that you established.
She enjoyed the path that her life had led her. May God grant you happiness on your path.
