AKSNOWICZ

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of ALFONS AKSNOWICZ at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at the age of 98 years.

Alfons will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Czesia and their children: Gina (Larry) Wojtowicz and Alice (Dan) Renning; grandchildren Jen Buit (Gordon Bello); Justin (Jocelyn) Buit and Kevin (April) Renning; as well as great-grandchildren Tristan, Jaelynn, Vincent, Violet and Xavier.

He was predeceased by his son Robert, son-in-law Jack, parents Malvina and Adam, four brothers Piotr, Lucian, Jozef, and Janek, his in-laws, Amelia and Anthony Kuziomko and his best friend since World War II, Jan (Helena) Pietkiewicz.

Alfons was born in Zajezezieze, Poland on Jan 21, 1920 and was the third oldest of five boys. As a young man, he enjoyed learning about the history of Poland and helping his father on the farm. While his brothers all had a passion to play musical instruments, Alfon’s passion was for the outdoors, specifically hunting with his dog.

When World War II broke out, Alfon’s family was exiled to Siberia by the Russian army. While in Siberia, a Polish army was organized, The Polish II Corps, which he joined and there met, his best friend, Jan Pietkiewicz. Alfons was trained as a Radio operator and driver in a Sherman Tank. He travelled with the Polish Army through Russia, Iran, Iraq, Palestine and to Egypt where they went under the command of the British 8th Army. Alfons then travelled by ship to Italy where they fought with distinction in the battle of Monte Casino to help defeat the Germans. The Polish II Corps had a consistently high fighting reputation and was well regarded by the American and Commonwealth troops with whom they fought alongside.

After the war, Alfons went to England and in 1947 immigrated to Canada. He first worked sugar beets in the Picture Butte area, then for a short period of time on a farm near Pincher Creek. Alfons also worked at the Lethbridge #8 Mine, Shaughnessy mine and the Lethbridge Research Station. In 1949, he met the love of his life, Czesia Kuziomko and they married on May 13, 1950. They raised three children and celebrated 68 blessed years together.

Alfons and Jan started their farming careers by renting farmland together. They eventually were able to pool their monies and purchase a farm of their own. After 13 years of farming together, they were each able to purchase their own farms and continued to help each other, while remaining best of friends throughout their lives. Alfons farmed in the Picture Butte area until 1997 when he and Czesia retired and moved to Lethbridge. After retirement, they made frequent road trips “North” to visit and inspect the family farm throughout the years.

Alfons loved being with his family. He especially cherished time with his great grandchildren; Tristan, whom he called “My Little Helper” and had many living room cane sword fights and backyard hunting adventures with; and Jaelynn, who he called his “Little Sweetie-Pie”. Anyone who met Alfons immediately recognized his light-hearted disposition, sense of humor, generous hospitality, as well as enjoyed stories of his war time experiences. Alfons looked forward to Sunday dinners with his family, hunting, fishing, camping for over 25 years in Radium Hot Springs and his love for animals; especially dogs.

Alfons was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion and the Polish Combatants Association. He will be missed by numerous family and friends across Canada, Poland and the United States. Alfons was a man of great faith and our family comforted knowing he is now with his savior.

Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects during a Visitation at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB, on Friday, December 21, 2018 at 6:00 P.M., with a Prayer Service to follow at 7:00 P.M.

Nicola Mucciarone

1932 – 2018

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nicola (Nick) Mucciarone of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Rosina. He passed peacefully at Chinook Regional Hospital with his family by his side on Sunday, Dad was raised in the village of Sessano, Provincia Campobasso, Italy. Growing up, Dad lived a true Italian farmer’s life raising pigs, sheep, goats, and chickens. At a young age, Dad’s green thumb had already begun, tending to the family’s large garden. Dad helped his Uncle Luigi with various tasks and enjoyed spending time with his Nonno, Sabatino, learning about the bible. Dad also enjoyed ringing the church bells for mass.

At the age of 19, Dad decided it was time to leave his homeland and go to Canada. His Uncle Sam and Aunty Elisa made papers for him to come to Lethbridge. On May 16, 1952, Dad began his journey across ocean and land, arriving in Lethbridge June 3, 1952. A few days later Dad started working for the CPR and remained a faithful employee for nearly 41 years.

In 1952, Dad first saw the love of his life, Rosina, and set out to make her his wife. On October 25, 1958, the dream came true with Mom and Dad celebrating their marriage vows at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. This dream has lasted over sixty years, each year filled with the blessings of family and friends.

Dad was a man of many passions. He had an unparalleled talent for gardening, which was showcased through the meticulous garden and yard he maintained each year. His competitive spirit was also displayed through the various card games he played with his family and friends. Since family was such an important part of his life, he frequently took his family to many places around the world, particularly Hawaii, Disneyland, and Las Vegas. Alongside Mom, Dad was his grandchildren’s number one fan. No matter the event, from a music recital to a basketball game, Dad was always in the crowd cheering them on. Dad also enjoyed a good meal, especially those shared with family and friends at his dinner table. Whether it was one of Mom’s delicious homemade meals or take-out from one of his favourite local restaurants, Dad celebrated life through the meals that he shared. Each day, Dad remained devoted to his faith, dedicating time to prayer and acts of service. His steadfast love for his family and friends was rooted in his love of Jesus.

Dad will be dearly missed by his family and friends, but the many memories that were made will last a lifetime.

Nick was predeceased by his parents Giovanni and Assunta Mucciarone of Italy, his brother Antonio Mucciarone and brother in-law Graziano Altieri of Pennsylvania and his grandson James Snodgrass of Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Nick is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Rosina; Son Rino (Luann) Mucciarone of Lethbridge Alberta and their children Cassandra (fiancé Brett), Ryan (girlfriend Phoebe) and Mathew; Daughter Rita (Howard) Snodgrass of Medicine Hat Alberta and their children Jaimie (Iain) Purcell and Joel Snodgrass.

Nick is also survived by his step Mom Anna Mucciarone of Italy, brother Mario Mucciarone of Italy, sister Palmina Altieri of Pennsylvania, sister Rosetta Mucciarone of Italy, sister in-law Antonietta Mucciarone of Pennsylvania and numerous nieces and nephews. He also had special affection for his father and mother in-law, John and Filomena D’Agnone, and all his brothers and sister’s in-law and children.

Vigil Rites (Prayers) will be held at 7:00PM, on Friday, December 28, 2018, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00AM, on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at the ST. BASIL’S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 604-13 Street North, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Father Kevin Tumback celebrant. Interment to follow in the Mountain View Cemetery.

Nicola (Nick) Mucciarone

December 16, 1932

– December 23 2018

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nicola (Nick) Mucciarone of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Rosina. He passed peacefully at Chinook Regional Hospital with his family by his side on Sunday, December 23, 2018, at 86 years of age.

Dad was raised in the village of Sessano, Provincia Campobasso, Italy.

Nick is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Rosina; Son Rino (Luann) Mucciarone of Lethbridge Alberta and their children Cassandra (Fiance Brett), Ryan (girlfriend Phoebe) and Mathew; Daughter Rita (Howard) Snodgrass of Medicine Hat Alberta and their children Jaimie (Iain) Purcell and Joel Snodgrass.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Foundation, at 204, 2323-32 Avenue NE, Calgary, Alberta, T2E 6Z3.

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, and Grandmother, Elaine Viergutz, on Wednesday, December 26th, 2018 at the age of 83 years following a short battle with cancer. Mom was born in Wheatstone, Sask., on July 10, 1935 to John and Sophie Stratulat. The youngest of five children, Elaine grew up on the family farm adjacent to Dahinda, Sask. After school, Mom trained with the Grey Nun’s in Regina as a Nurses Aid. In 1954 she married the love of her life Mel, and they relocated to Lethbridge in 1956. Mom worked at the Lethbridge Municipal Hospital, then the Haig Clinic until their first child was born in 1960. Mom then stayed at home and raised their four children for the next fifteen years. Mom gave us all a wonderful childhood with arts, crafts and music for all the different seasons and holidays. Mom had a work ethic like no other, and there was always plenty of delicious food and baking for all and hand sewn clothing she made for us. Mom was an avid bowler in both mixed and ladies’ leagues over the years. She was an excellent gardener and loved her beautiful yard at their home on Lakeshore Road. In 1975 Mom went back to nursing at the Family Medical Centre and worked there until she retired in 1995. In retirement Mom and Dad travelled and made many friends and had great adventures via their membership in the Southern Alberta Antique & Classic Auto Club. After losing her darling husband, Mom moved to the View in January and quickly pitched in helping with the library and social activities and made many new friendships in her short time there. Elaine is survived by her son Kevin (Barb), granddaughter Kimberly Ellen (David), great-granddaughter Leslie Ellen, grandson Matthew (Sarah) and great granddaughter Katherine; son Dale (Jan) and granddaughters Taneal and Olivia; daughter Sharon Walsh (Steve); daughter Wendy Fitzsimmons and grandson Ty. She’s also survived by her sister Phyllis Harrison, brothers Steve (Pearl), Art (special friend Marion Greenway), and Phillip (Jean) Stratulat, brother in law Mervin (Faye) Viergutz, sisters in law Julia Viergutz and Lucille Duke, and many nieces and nephews. ARISMAN

EIRA PATRICIA MARY ARISMAN (née Dore), beloved wife of Steve Arisman of Lethbridge, passed away suddenly at home on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at the age of 87 years.

Eira is survived by her children: Gayle (Leo) Durand of Lethbridge, Terri (Wayne) Smith of Lethbridge, and Rob Arisman (Barb Linsley) of Dawson Creek; grandchildren Jessica (Ryan) Durand-Kaustinen of Lethbridge, Chelsey Durand of Winnipeg, Ryan Smith (Rio Pisony) of Calgary and Alyssa and Ryan Linsley of Dawson Creek; and great-grandchildren Bransen and Brennan Durand-Kaustinen of Lethbridge. She is also survived by sisters Megan Yanosik and Elinor Carpenter.

Eira was predeceased by her parents John and Eva Dore and brother Ken Dore.

Lethbridge did not know how lucky it was when Eira Patricia-Mary Dore and her family moved here from Swift Current. Starting work at the Lethbridge Research Centre, Eira quickly started making friends in the community. This brought her to the Lethbridge Arena where the handsome right winger, Steve Arisman, caught her eye.

Their romance quickly blossomed off the ice and they were married in 1953. Hockey was always part of their life. Steve and Eira purchased season tickets to the Broncos and have been season ticket holders ever since.

The house was soon filled with the activity of their three children Gayle, Terri, and Rob and her many beloved pets. But when the grandchildren filled the house, Eira came to life. They spent summer outside making forts and blowing soap bubbles and during bad weather, all the grandkids piled into the kitchen to bake and marble eggs.

Eira was incredibly talented. She pressed flowers from her own garden for cards, painted Ukrainian eggs, spent hours crocheting towels and baby blankets and sweaters and whittled intricate wood carvings. She loved spending time in her garden, feeding the blue jays and taking care of her famous petunia tree.

She spent many hours volunteering in the Lethbridge Senior Centre boutique and loved swimming with the ladies at Aquafit each week. She placed great importance in making sure others were taken care of before herself and the entire community will miss her lively presence.

A Prayer Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB, on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at 7:00 P.M.

FOSSEN

Our dear Mum, MURIEL ROSA FOSSEN, beloved wife of the late Stanley Fossen, passed away quietly at home in Lethbridge, on Tuesday, December 25, 2018 at the age of 95 years.

Mum grew up in England and during WWII, joined the ATS, Signal Corps. She met the love of her life at a dance while they were both stationed in Wick, Scotland. At the end of the war, Mum became a War Bride, embarking on the journey across the Atlantic to Canada. Mum and Dad were married for 67 years and they built a loving home and raised four children. We learned very early on that family came first and Mum was happiest when surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dad passed in 2012 and Mum was lonely without him. We are sad to see her go and will miss her, but she got her Christmas wish to be with Dad.

Her legacy includes: daughter Pam (Doug) Mundell and children Mark (Kathy), Steve (Kelly), Scott (Annamaria) and Matt; sons Neal (Fern) and children Jennifer (John) Warren and Stephanie Parko; Ken (Connie) and children Philip (Bruno) and Jason (Jessica); Brian (Wendy) and children Clayton (Stephanie), Ryan (Brittany) and Sarah (Steve); as well as 18 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Bernard (Elsie) Fossen and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her loving husband, Stanley, Muriel was predeceased by her parents Reuben and Daisy Mynard, sister Olive Walker, brother-in-law Dale Walker and many close relatives.

KOENIG

ELMA KOENIG, beloved wife of the late Emanuel Koenig, passed away peacefully at St. Michael’s Palliative Care, on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at the age of 100 years.

She was born in Irvine, Alberta on May 18, 1918, the youngest child of Daniel and Anna Wirsch. She married Emanuel (Manny) Koenig in 1941 and together they raised four children, Maxine (Donald) Sureman, Carol Koenig (Dennis Richter), Danielle (Larry) Smith and Denton (Kathy) Koenig. Initially living in Medicine Hat, Manny and Elma moved several times before coming to Coaldale, Alberta in 1961 and one final move took them to Lethbridge in 1988.

Elma loved nature. She particularly enjoyed drives to Cypress Hills, Waterton Park or the Crowsnest Pass where she would delight in the wildflowers, birds and animals that she might see. Her artistic skills and love of wildlife was evident in the beautiful ceramic pieces she created while a member of the LSCO. Manny and Elma had a beautiful garden, growing both vegetables and flowers in abundance.

Elma was a wonderful cook and her house was always open to anyone who wanted to stop in. Mom always wanted to feed you, be it a meal or some of her baked treats, and a visit was never complete without a cup of tea (“with just a bit of sugar to make the flavor come out”) or coffee with evaporated milk. Elma loved reading, especially anything to do with history, nature and her bible.

In addition to her four children, Elma is survived by three grandchildren – Kevin Sureman (Carla Pickering), Dan (Diana) Koenig, and Matthew (Nicole) Koenig as well as two great-grandchildren – Evan (Kaleisha) Sureman and Austin Sureman. She was predeceased by her husband, Manny, and her two sisters, Annie (John) Jans and Dorothy (Henry) Jans.

We would like to thank the staff of St. Michael’s Health Centre Long Term Complex Care for the wonderful and loving care provided to mom.

Carolyn Ann Garriott 11.30.1936 – 12.28.2018

Carolyn’s indomitable spirit departed this plane of existence after 82 years and one month of life; enroute to her next exciting adventure. Carolyn was born to Borghilde (Peggy) Cartwright and Clarence Cartwright at Lewistown, MT. in November 1936. Unfortunately, she and her elder sister Joyce lost their father to a logging accident when she was only two. Peggy moved to Great Falls to find work to support her two girls. Later Peggy met and married Ed Burtosky of Great Falls. The girls entered elementary school at Emerson, and they lived in the Bill Holt Housing project while Ed was serving in the Navy. The girls often spent their summers on the farm near Loma, MT. with Peggy’s parents, Thore and Christine Ritland, or with Clarence’s parents, Frazier and Blanch Cartwiright on their place near Geraldine, MT. All went well until after WW-II, whenPeggy and Ed divorced. Peggy soon married John Koble, an Army Air Corps man, recently discharged. The girl’s new step-father found work difficult to find in the post-war times. They moved, first to Clyde Park, MT; then Boise ID and finally to Riverton, WY, home to John Koble and his family. He soon found a good job as a Postal Service Carrier. Carolyn entered the fifth grade and soon made many friends. One of those schoolmates was Jerry Garriott. They became very good friends throughout their High School years, graduating in 1954. Carolyn then attended Junior College at Casper, WY, as did Jerry. They maintained their close friendship until Jerry enlisted in the Navy in 1955. Carolyn left school soon thereafter and went to work in a bank and an oil company doing clerical and office management work. In Riverton, Carolyn later married the ‘boy next door’, Buckley Cunningham. They moved to Laramie, WY where “Buck” attended the University of Wyoming, while Carolyn worked to help support them. They had three children there, David, Stephen and Karen, while Buck was earning a BA in Wildlife and Forestry Management. Shortly after graduation Buck was offered a position as Park Naturalist at Banff National Park, in Southern Alberta, CA. He accepted forthwith and the little family immigrated to Canada and settled in Waterton, a village just south of Banff. Buck’s career in the provincial government later took them to Edmonton, AB, where they had their fourth child, Brian. They then moved to Calgary and finally to Lethbridge, where Buck joined the faculty at Lethbridge College. Carolyn enrolled there and soon earned a BS in Anthropology, followed by a BA in Education. Carolyn and Buck divorced then and she took the four kids and moved to a small farm south of Lethbridge. Carolyn started working and entered a fast track program to get her MA Ed. She was then able to secure a good position teaching middle school in the Lethbridge high schools system. An accomplished vocalist, Carolyn was appointed to manage and directed the school choir. Soon after beginning her teaching, Carolyn was chosen by the University to become part of an Anthropological research team planning to go to Italy on a dig. While preparing for this assignment, Carolyn retained a fellow named Antonio Brocca, to tutor her Italian language. Tony was an Italian immigrant to Canada. When he proposed later she decided to marry Tony and he could then accompany her to Italy, acting as tutor and tour guide. During her absence the four children were sent to live with their Grandparents in Montana. These plans came a cropper shortly after they arrived in Rome. The Morrow Civil War broke out in Italy and the expedition leader soon advised everyone to return home to Canada a soon as possible. But because of the civil war, transportation and documentation were nearly at a stand-still. Happily Tony and Carolyn were able to stay with his family while they scrambled for air transportation out of Italy. After many days they finally secured reservations to fly home, but not before Carolyn had learned a lot about Italian cooking from Mama Brocca. Once back in Lethbridge, Carolyn was able to resume her work teaching, but unfortunately contracted Multiple Sclerosis (MS). She was medically retired early from teaching, and spent several months regaining her mobility. Finally she got out of the wheel chair and resumed a nearly normal life . Her teachers pension and federal disability benefits enabled them to buy some property in the village of Sterling, about 24 Km. south of Lethbridge. In Sterling Carolyn, who had raised goats for milk and meat, saw an opportunity and a market and she decided to build a Goat Milk Dairy and go into business In only a little over a year, near the turn of the Millennium, the Heritage Creamery opened for business in Sterling. The Goats Milk Dairy didn’t take off as quickly as hoped, so she expanded the product line by making single serving meat pies, small pizzas and cookie dough, The food was frozen for take home, and became an immediate hit, first in Sterling and then to the surrounding suburban communities. The frozen cookie dough became a big seller to the local schools where the students took orders and delivered them as fundraising projects. Then in 2002 a seismic event occurred back in Riverton, WY where she had graduated High School in 1954. A group of alumni started early planning for the 50th high school reunion to be held in the summer of 2004. An e-mail was sent out to all of the ’54 grads that they knew of. In Las Vegas, where Jerry Garriott lived, he received the reunion notice e-mail. In the large addressee list Jerry spotted Carolyn’s name and her e-mail address. He e-mailed and asked if she would be attending, and suggesting that they might get together. She quickly replied and they began a correspondence. The e-mails soon morphed into telephone calls, and they made a date to meet. Jerry would fly and Carolyn would drive to Great Falls. The rest of the story involves Jerry moving to Shelby, MT and commuting to Sterling, initiating their respective divorces, as Carolyn set about selling her Creamery. They moved to Great Falls where they found a place to live and, when their divorces were final, they were married in a civil ceremony at the Cascade County Court house in June of 2003. They proudly attended their 50th Riverton High School reunion as man and wife. They had become Soul Mates and made each other’s lives complete for 15 wonderful years. Carolyn wrote and published a novel entitled Shadow of the Cross, and also four children’s books. Diagnosed with Lymphonic Leukemia in 2009, she underwent chemothearapy and was able to get it into remission. Early in December, 2018. the leukemia was back, and getting worse. Her oncologist prescribed absolute rest and zero stress. He recommended the Peace Hospice facility in Great Falls, where she checked in on December 14th. After Christmas, her condition declined further , and she passed away at 1:32 PM on Friday the 28th, as Jerry held her hand.

LARSEN – Kay (Katrina) January 13, 1928 –

Coalhurst, Alberta December 27, 2018 –

Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kaye Larsen on Thursday, December 27, 2018, just shy of her 91st birthday. Kaye was born in Coalhurst, AB to George and Sophie Ukrainetz, moving to Lethbridge with her family after the Coalhurst mine explosion of 1935. She remained in Lethbridge practically her whole life, proud to always be a “Northsider”, and only leaving the city in 2017 to be closer to family in Calgary. She married Harold Larsen on July 12, 1949, and in 1952 they welcomed their only child, daughter Shelley. Following her retirement from Canada Safeway in 1988, Kaye and Harold enjoyed a wonderful life together of golfing and curling, and many spur-of-the-moment jaunts to Jackpot, Nevada. Sadly, Harold succumbed to cancer in July, 2001, and shortly after, Kaye was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration. Not to let sight impairment get her down, she continued to golf and curl, having friends tell her where her ball ended up, or if she hit the broom! She was also determined to “see the world” before she couldn’t see it any longer. Her first big trip was to Greece followed by a once-in-a-lifetime African Safari with Shelley. She also discovered, and fell in love with cruising. Thus began annual Mother & Daughter Getaways which, over the past 10 years, took them to Australia, South America, South Pacific, and the Caribbean many times. These were such fun adventures, sometimes taking them away from home for months at a time! Kaye always made sure to try something new to tell the folks back home – ziplining, parasailing, swimming with sharks, having lunch with zebras, petting and feeding kangaroos ..! Although she travelled the world, Kaye remained a casual, simple lady whose greatest joys in life were having Caesars at happy hour and lavender bubble baths. She was loved by her family and her friends, for her kindness, sense of humour and her unwillingness to let her health problems get in the way of living a full life. Kaye is survived by her daughter Shelley (Ford), son-in-law Tony Hayduk, and Tony’s family in Calgary, as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and the US. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Harold, brother William (Bill) Ukrainetz, friend and companion Bill Flynn, her grand-dog Chuck and grand-cat Bobbi. Kaye will be laid to rest with her beloved Harold in Mountain View Cemetery, Lethbridge. A private interment will be held. The family wishes to thank the staff and residents at The Manor Village Signature Park, Calgary, for their care and friendship, the medical teams at the Foothills Hospital for their perseverance and compassion, and first and foremost, we appreciate the thoughts and prayers from Shelley and Tony’s many friends who adopted Kaye as “Mom”. May God bless you and Dad as you travel together in all eternity.

LARSEN – Kaye (Katrina) January 13, 1928 –

Please forward condolences through http://www.calgarycrematorium.com

LYMAN “Saakooyinaa” (Last Chief) TAIL FEATHERS

March 02, 1948 – December 30, 2018

It is with great sadness and extreme sorrow we announce the sudden passing of a loving and devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle and husband Lyman Tail Feathers. Lyman passed away December 30, 2018 at the Cardston Hospital at 70 years of age.

He leaves to mourn his daughter Jade Leah (Desiree); grandchildren Kash (Brae), Kiley (Jay), Lexei, Payton & Marshal; great-granddaughters Rhegan & Checotah; Alanna Eagle Bear and David Shade; his wife and life-long friend, Barbara Heavy Shields; sisters: Georgette (Pet) Fox, Margaret (Lammie) Fox, Bev Tail Feathers-Maiers; Brothers: Lester (Virginia), Gerald (Colleen) & Rick (Sharon); numerous nieces and nephews;

Lyman was born to Harvey and Nellie (nee Yellow Creek) Tail Feathers at the Blood Indian Hospital and was raised at their homestead in the Bullhorn area. Lyman attended St. Paul’s Residential School, graduating from Cardston High School and continuing his studies at the Lethbridge Community College and University of Lethbridge.

Lyman met the love of his life and together spent fifty precious years dedicating themselves to family. They built their homestead in Bullhorn where Lyman would often be seen tending to his horses, faithful family dogs or planting trees and flowers for Barb and his children. When Lyman became a dad he ensured his family had a wonderful home. Lyman took great pride and love teaching his children, grandchildren and extended family the craft of ranching and caring for the homestead where they welcomed many friends and family for barbeques and family gatherings. He was a proud and loving father to his cherished Jolaine, Lynel and Jade. Lyman supported his children in all their endeavors with school, sports and recreation most recently for Jade and her goal of returning to continue her post-secondary education. His life joy was in becoming “grampa” where he expanded his nurturing ways on his grandchildren as they grew alongside their hero. His warm smile and humility made all feel special. Lyman made his Cursillo in the early 1980’s. He acknowledged the many challenges he encountered but always said he had his own spiritual connection to our Lord and Creator.

Lyman was an athlete. His professional sporting career began with the Blood Reserve Boxing Club. His tenacity in the ring led him to Golden Gloves title at the tender age of 12. He was known to be “ferocious” in the ring winning 87 of 90 matches but outside of the ring he remained a true gentleman. Lyman continued his ascent in sports making a break in hockey and at the young age of 16 established a spot amongst the greats of Blood Reserve/Ranchland hockey. He and his lifetime friend, Roy Fox, were the youngest players on the team and held their own alongside the men. Lyman retired from hockey as a Kainai Chief but could not stay out of the rink. He coached hockey passing his skills onto his son Lynel and many Blood Reserve youth. Up until his passing, you could still see Lyman in different arenas encouraging Kash, Payton, Marshal, Rhegan & “Cota”.

Rodeo, too, was not ever far from Lyman’s reach. As a youngster he competed in the event he was fond of…steer wrestling. He won many titles and continued true sportsmanship in this arena as well lending out his beloved horses to many travelling cowboys. Lyman’s love of the sport filtered to his treasure, Jolaine, as she started her barrel racing career at the age of five. He was proud of her accomplishments. His support continued as his grandchildren Kash & Kiley and great-granddaughters Rhegan and “Cota” followed the pursuits of their legend they call “Grampa”. Lyman was committed to the sport. He was a member of IRCA in its early years and hosted many Blood Reserve Rodeos and steer wrestling schools at his home.

Lyman was employed by Blood Tribe Administration for many years. He was also a member of the Blood Reserve School Bus Coop for 26 years serving both as a bus driver and later as a senior supervisor. Lyman was respected and loved by the families he served, especially his number one priority, the students. On his bus run, he would often stop at the nearby food mart treating the students. After his retirement from bus driving, his students were known to ask when he was going to start driving again; they missed him so much. Lyman could not just retire from an occupation he loved. At the time of his passing, Lyman continued his duties as Blood Reserve Bus Coop Senior Supervisor.

Lyman was a good conversationalist captivating company with fantastic and his usually funny storytelling. His work, coaching, rodeo, travels and his love for storytelling made him many, many lifetime friends. The kind, gentle and caring soul will be missed immensely. Bullhorn will not be the same without Lyman.

Lyman leaves his Bullhorn Homestead to join his beloved children Jolaine Kate & Lynel; parents: Harvey & Nellie Tail Feathers; brothers: Gilbert & Philip; sisters: Christine Tallow & Lillian Scout; Aunt Helen and Uncle Ken; in-laws: Ed & Adelaide, Herman, Gordon, John and Mary Heavy Shields.

A Family Service will be at Legacy Funeral Home, Cardston on Sunday, January 6th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Blood Reserve on Monday, January 7th at 11:00 a.m.. Interment in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Blood Reserve. Feast: Following the Graveside Service, relatives and friends are invited to further share this day with Lyman’s family at the South Hill Chapel in Cardston, AB.

RODERICK ALPHONSE “POOKAANIKAPI” (YOUNG MAN) WHITE QUILLS

February 14, 1944 – January 1, 2019

It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle RODERICK WHITE QUILLS. Rod passed away at home on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at the age of 74 years.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife and best friend Audrey; children Marci, Chico (Rene), Krissy, Roxi, and Mike (Shona); grandchildren Tera, Peyton, Kyman, Caylyn, Tyson, Roddy, Tomi, Leah, Emery, Theo, Benji, Breeli, and Kessel; mother-in-law Phyllis Fox; sisters Bernadette Young Pine, Delores White Quill, brother Vincent White Quills, sisters-in-law Rosaline Crow Shoe, Joyce First Rider, Dolly Creighton, Josie Russell, Penny (Kirby) Fox; brothers-in-law Pat (Rose) Fox, Larry (Donna) Fox, and Wilfred Soop, Snyder (Ann) Fox, Tiger (Kelly) Fox, nephew and adopted son Franklin (Annette) White Quills, adopted children Janine, Lucille, Charles, and Rolanda First Rider, Becky-Jo Fox, Kori Jo, Bo Wells and Lionel Shade, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family too numerous to mention.

Rod was born to Paul and Fanny White Quills at the Blood Indian Hospital and was raised in the Bullhorn area on the Blood Reserve. Rod received his early education at the St. Mary’s Residential School eventually becoming a supervisor before moving on and working as a ranch hand at the St. Josephs Farm near the St. Mary’s Residential School. Later in life he pursued a higher education, obtaining his journeyman certification as an electrician.

Rod was a hard worker and always made sure to do his best in whatever endeavor he pursued. Throughout his schooling Rod played numerous sports excelling in Basketball and Hockey. It was here that he met many of his lifelong friends who, he affectionately referred to as his brothers. Rod also participated in Rodeo, especially in the calf-roping event; a passion he passed on to his youngest son Mike.

Rod met his lifelong companion, Audrey, and together spent the next 44 years building a life that was dedicated to their family, especially their grandchildren. From the moment Rod became a father, he always made it his priority to work hard and provide a solid foundation for his family. Rod was incredibly proud of his children and taught them to take pride in all that they did and to always ensure that they lived up to their full potential in whatever endeavor they pursued. Rod loved his children. There was never a moment or meeting when he did not show them how much he loved them. Among the many gifts Rod gave his children, his greatest gift was teaching his children to have faith. He always made sure to remind his children that in life there would be many challenges but through faith and hard work they would overcome these challenges. Rod’s greatest joy was when he became a grandpa. His grandchildren were the light of his life. His love for them was immeasurable and he made it his life to be a part of every milestone especially when it came to watching them play sports. His weekends consisted of numerous hockey games and watching his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs on T.V. It was here that he was most happy and content. Later in his life, Rod enjoyed travelling with his baby Mike to rodeos all over Alberta and the midwestern United States.

Rod made his Crusillo in 1983; it was through the crusillo movement where his relationship with God was strengthened. It was also through this movement that his faith and spirituality grew immensely. Rod was devout in his Catholic faith and made sure his family was raised with these beliefs ensuring his children were up every Sunday in order to make mass at 11AM in Moses Lake. One of his best memories was when he and Audrey took a pilgrimage to Europe in 1999.

Rod was a simple and humble man. To those who knew him he was the person who always had a smile for everyone he met. He made an impact on all those who knew him. His house was everyone’s house, especially to the friends his children brought home on a regular basis. His children’s friends became his kids. Rod took pride in coaching his eldest son throughout his minor hockey career. Through this, he affectionately referred to his sons teammates as his “boys”. As his youngest son began his hockey career, Rod could always been seen coaching from the stands or behind the chutes. Dad was our toughest critic and biggest fan. In his later years, he could be seen tending to Mike’s horse, mowing his lawn in the summer, or caring for his faithful dogs.

Eileen Lawson

1923 – 2019

Mrs. Eileen Lawson, beloved wife of the late William “Bill” Lawson, passed into the presence of her Lord and Savior at St Therese Villa on Saturday, January 5, 2019, at the age of 95 years. Eileen was born in Coleraine, Northern Ireland on March 13, 1923 at the family farm, “Englishtown”. Following graduation from Coleraine Technical College she worked as a civil servant in the Ministry of Commerce, then the Law Courts. Later she felt the call of God on her life to vocational ministry and enrolled at the Faith Mission Bible College in Edinburgh. For 6 years she served as a “pilgrim” with the Faith Mission, conducting missions throughout northern Scotland. It was during one of those missions she met Bill and was married on May 29, 1952. Four years later with 2 small children they immigrated to Canada, to the Toronto area, where they added 2 more sons. In 1977 they moved to Calgary where she managed the Canadian office for Mission to Children. In 2006 they moved to Lethbridge where she has resided since. Eileen became a follower of Christ as a young woman. She is remembered for her unwavering commitment to Jesus, lived out in tireless support of her husband, raising her children, and serving her church. She served in many capacities in every church where she worshipped; teaching Sunday School, committee member, hospitality, and always visiting seniors. She was a gracious host, offering hospitality to friends and strangers whenever she could. In her retirement years she and Bill loved to travel and to visit their growing family. For years they served with Roving Volunteers in Christ’s Service, always in warmer climates and in the winter. Suffering the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, she became a shadow of her true self. In spite of her weakening mind her faith in Christ remained evident. Thank you to the staff at St Therese Villa for their extraordinary and compassionate care of mom over the past three years. Eileen is survived by four sons: Ian of Lethbridge, Andrew of Edmonton, Paul (Doris) of Cranbrook, Stephen (Lesley) of Abbotsford, 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
