Edward Joseph Megantic Meaney

August 7, 1926 – November 4, 2018

A life filled with great adventure came to a close with the passing of Edward Joseph Megantic Meaney, age 92 years, surrounded by his loving family, at the Pincher Creek Hospital on November 4, 2018.

Born upon the tide in Canadian waters, aboard the RMS Megantic on August 7, 1926, as his Irish parents William and Bridget Meaney sailed towards a new life in Canada. His birthplace is registered as Quebec City, the ship’s first Canadian port-of-call. Throughout his life, the sea played a significant role from his childhood growing up along the St. Lawrence River, to his time as a seaman with the Royal Canadian Navy and Merchant Marines, to his world travels.

Edward, affectionally known as Ganty to his family and closest of friends, was predeceased by his loving wife Mary Louise Young in 1983. He is survived by his children: Brian (Cathy) Meaney of Medicine Hat; Maureen Meaney of Pincher Creek; and Colleen (Ron) Valin of Coaldale. Cherished grandchildren Shauna (Clancy) Meaney-Feller, Laine Valin and Joel (Sarah) Valin. Great-grandchildren Chancellor (Rebecca) Meaney-Feller and Brianagh Meaney-Feller. Great-great granddaughter baby Aurora. Sisters, Mary Greene and Gwen (Robert) Gallagher. He was pre-deceased by his wife Mary, parents, sister Patricia Whitworth and brother-in-law Gordon Greene.

Ganty lived an extraordinary life. He sailed the seas and lived in foreign lands, but loved the simple life found in his Canadian homes, first as a child and young man in Montreal and in 1961 an employment transfer brought him and his young family to Pincher Creek, where he resided in his own home until his passing.

His intelligence, creativeness and incredibly strong work ethic led to a remarkably successful 40+ year career in the petroleum industry, both in Canada and abroad. Work defined him on so many levels and once retired he missed the challenge that coincided with oil and gas problem solving, along with the many colleagues he befriended at work sites around the world.

More importantly, he was a good man, who loved his family deeply, mourned those who went before him, reveled in his Irish heritage and was true to his Catholic faith. His legacy will live on in those he loved.

Vigil Rights (Prayers) service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 9 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 958-Christie Ave. Pincher Creek. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 10 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

Memorial donations in Edward’s memory can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #43 Poppy Fund (Box 131, Pincher Creek, T0K 1W0) or to the Windy Slopes Health Foundation (Box 2554, Pincher Creek, T0K 1W0). Condolences can be sent to condolences@edensfuneralhome.com

LLOYD PATRICK WOODS, beloved husband of the late Mabel Emma Woods, passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital on November 7, 2018, at the age of 88 years.

Lloyd was born in Longford Mills, Ontario in 1930 and, at the age of 17, he came to Alberta to find a job in the oilpatch. He worked for various drilling companies and worked all the jobs on the rig, quickly advancing to the position of Driller. In 1957, while working near Indian Head, Saskatchewan, he met a young widow Mabel Brack (nee Fruin) and her four young children. Together, they moved to Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan in 1959 and Calgary, Alberta in 1961 where Lloyd continued to work in the oilpatch. In 1970, Lloyd started J&L Rock Bit Services and moved to Brooks, Alberta in 1977 to be closer to the clientele. Lloyd retired in 1985 and moved to Lethbridge, Alberta with his daughter in 2005.

Lloyd was known for the force of his personality; he was generous, mischievous, short-tempered, hilarious, tactless, and always big-hearted. He loved children and animals, especially teasing them. He was always the first person to offer to help someone and vehemently stood-up for the underdog. His late wife lovingly called him a “diamond in the rough”. In his younger days he loved hunting and fishing and always had a beloved Labrador retriever at his side.

Left to mourn his absence are his daughter Shelley Woods (Darryle Thiessen) of Lethbridge; his step-children Jim (Christine) Brack of Brooks, Mavis Walyuchow of Medicine Hat and Richard (Linda) Brack of Calgary; ten grand-children and numerous great-grandchildren. His family would like to express deep appreciation to all of the staff at St. Therese Villas for their kind care. In the final years of his life, dementia took much from him but his indomitable spirit remained until the end.

STUCKART

Apr. 12, 1920 – Nov. 9, 2018

It is with heavy hearts and also with thanks for a long and healthy life, that the family of BLANCHE DELIA STUCKART, announce her passing at the age of 98 years.

She is survived by her children: Heather (Bernie) Schmid of Warner, John (Wendy) Stuckart of Kingston, ON, Linda Storms of Calgary, AB and daughter-in-law Karenne Stuckart of Barnwell. Her memory will also be cherished by her 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren, along with special cherished friends Marguerite and Lorne Cooley of Pincher Creek.

Blanche was predeceased by her husband Albert Stuckart, son Jim Stuckart, son-in-law Doug Storms and brother Gerald (Mary) Plante.

Blanche was raised on the land that the Assumption Church now stands on, where her parents homesteaded. Born and raised in Lethbridge as a young girl, mom delivered newspapers on horseback. She worked at the YMCA where she met Dad and together they worked side-by-side founding the Lethbridge Battery Company, which they operated for 20 years. Driving mom around Lethbridge, she would fondly recall precious memories and incredible history about her early days. She was an exceptional seamstress who made her own clothes, created beautiful quilts and many of her friends and family were recipients of her unique bone pillows. Mom spent a great deal of time in the kitchen, she truly enjoyed to bake and cook for those she loved. Her secret recipes have been handed down throughout the generations of her family, solidifying the legacy she has left behind.

Mom and Dad supported Jr. Hockey by taking in hockey boarders over the years. She also spent a great deal of time working at Catholic Central High School. This is where you would find that her calming and compassionate spirit was truly felt as she never once complained and always had an ear for listening. She accomplished many things in her life but the most important of them all was being a mother, her family brought great joy and meaning to her life.

The family would like to express their gratitude to all the caregivers and staff of the Garden View Lodge, making Mom’s stay there a happy one. Thank you to Dr. Janzen for your exceptional care.

Blanche was a religious woman, being a long-standing member of the C.W.L. and Catholic Church, and as such a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at the OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH – 2405 12th Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. with Father Kevin Tumback, Celebrant.

In lieu of flowers and in memory of Blanche, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Phil Abela
1942 – 2018
Philip Abela, beloved husband of Linda Abela, passed away peacefully in Taber, surrounded by his family on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at the age of 76 years.
A celebration of Phil’s life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, 5205 – 48 Avenue, Taber on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. Condolences may be forwarded by visiting our website at http://www.southlandfuneral.com.
Besides Linda, his loving wife of fifty four years, Phil is survived by their two sons Graham (Angeline) Abela of Taber, Christopher (Morgan) Abela of Medicine Hat and by his grandchildren Brennan, Kaden, Abigail, Evan and Gavin.
Phil was born and raised in Wallsend, on the banks of the river Tyne in the northeast of England in 1942. After completing school, he apprenticed as a millwright with Swan Hunters and was hired to go to sea as a merchant seaman, ships engineer, where he sailed from England to the south pacific for several years. On September 19, 1964, Phil married Linda Clemitson in the High Howden Methodist Church in Wallsend and a few years later had two children, Graham and Christopher. Phil’s sense of adventure and hopes for providing a brighter future for the family prompted emigration from England to Canada in 1974, first to Cambridge, Ontario and then to Taber. Phil was very proud of his work in helping to establish and subsequently manage Hostess Foods, eventually rebranded as Frito Lay, for almost ten years. After Hostess Foods, Phil tried his hands at a few different careers, finishing his work life as a mechanical engineer at Maple Leaf Foods in Lethbridge.
Phil enjoyed many things in life, but especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and fishing, be it at the spillway at Stafford Lake or Salmon Fishing in the Pacific Ocean on Haida Gwaii. He loved the outdoors and travelling the world with Linda.
No flowers by request. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Phil’s name may be made directly to a charity of one’s personal choice.
The family would like to especially thank Dr. Ireland and nurse Christine, Dr. Smuts, Dr. Armstrong, Dr. Hughes, Dr. Yamabe and the wonderful nurses at the Taber Hospital including Jane, Connie, Kim, Bobbi and Mel, who helped at the start and those who were there at the end. It’s hard to believe that a sixteen year old young man, doing his job, would die from a disease caused by the powder he innocently applied to insulate pipes on a ship.
Arrangements in care of Southland Funeral Chapel, Taber. Telephone: (403) 223-8778.

HERFRIED ALFRED THEODOR TELKE

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Herfried Telke, wonderful, loving husband of Margaret (Klippenstein) Telke. Lovingly surrounded by his family, Pappy slipped away, eager to meet His Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, on November 10, 2018. Herf and Marg are parents of four children: Lori (Dieter) Tischler, Sharon-Joy Fletcher, Dwight Telke, and Sonia (Ken) McKenzie. He also leaves behind nine precious grandchildren: Travis (Becky), Tanya (Jesse), Derek, Mitanjeli (Jordan), Natalie, Monika (Christian), Haley, Nathan, and Aaron, as well as his great grandchildren: Blake, Micah and Paige. He greatly influenced their lives and they’ll always remember precious “Pappy” – the man we all know as fun-loving, adventurous and joyful – a man of solid integrity and real faith. He is survived by one brother, Irwin (Olive) Telke and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Gottfried and Lydia Telke, brother Otto Telke, and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Telke.

Born in Germany on August 15, 1929, Herf was six months old when his parents immigrated to Canada, where they initially settled in the North Battleford area. After his elementary education in Shackleton, Saskatchewan, he graduated from the Lutheran Academy in Outlook. This formative time was followed by teacher’s training, a B.Ed. from the University of Saskatchewan and a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from the University of Oregon. He taught math at Crescent Heights High School in Medicine Hat for thirty years, with intermittent teaching periods in Africa. In the early years of his teaching career Herf took a year off to be a brakeman on the railway. That year he was involved in three major accidents, barely surviving the last one which left him with permanent hearing loss, a challenge that he uncomplainingly overcame. After this he turned back to teaching where he met and married Margaret, the love of his life. They’ve been married sixty four years. After several principalships in Saskatchewan, the young family moved to Medicine Hat.

He is known for his great skill and enthusiasm for sports: baseball, hockey, curling, golfing, bowling, and tennis. Herf also played avid chess, weekly Rook games, and championship Cribbage. Countless family holidays included house boating, many ski trips and mountain stays.

His most significant and life-changing decision was to accept a commission with the Canadian International Development Agency as professor at the Marangu Teacher Training College on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, East Africa. He made the five day climb up this, the highest mountain in Africa, twice and took the family on numerous big game safaris and exotic coastal vacations. The eight years in Africa included four rich years teaching at Rift Valley Academy with projects helping orphanages, famine aid and young pastors.

The sixty years Herf and Marg have lived in Medicine Hat, Hillcrest Church has been the foundation for family-raising, spiritual growth, friendships, missions’ committees and many other serving opportunities. We have been deeply blessed by all that Hillcrest has provided.

The most recent eight years at Chinook Village have been delightfully filled with the “cruise ship” atmosphere of everything from drama club, game tournaments, Neighborfest and Bible studies. Herfried’s vivacious, cheerful disposition has been evident to everyone. Bible quotations and stories – always on the tip of his tongue – have inspired us all.

The family expresses sincere thanks to the 5 West medical team for their loving care.

Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME (Medicine Hat) on Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Interment will take place on Friday, November 16, 2018 at 12:30 p.m. at Hillside Cemetery with the celebration of his life to follow at Hillcrest Evangelical Missionary Church (3785 13th Ave SE, Medicine Hat) at 1:30 p.m., officiated by Pastor Lance Duncalfe and Pastor Jamie McDonald. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the main gate to the cemetery at 12:15 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Herfried’s name will be gratefully appreciated by the Prairie Gleaners Society P.O. Box 656 Medicine Hat, AB T1A 7G6. STUCKART

Beverley (Patching) Lewis

1947-2018

Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Beverley was raised by her parents, Harry and Betty Patching, on their farm near Wilson Siding, along with her brother and sister, Jim and Patricia Patching. Active in 4-H and her local church group, Bev graduated as the valedictorian of her class from Kate Andrews High School in Coaldale, Alberta. Soon after, she married her high school sweetheart, Bill Davidson, and moved to Edmonton to attend university. While the marriage itself was brief, her friendship with Bill lasted a lifetime.

Beverley’s sense of humour and quick wit were matched by her sharp intellect and insatiable thirst for knowledge. At the University of Alberta she received her degree in Education, she then returned to U of A to pursue her degree in Law and was admitted to the Alberta Bar shortly thereafter; all this while raising her two children, Kerry and Bill Davidson.

After relocating to the west coast in the mid-eighties, Bev’s strong sense of social justice led her to a career in Social Work; first with After Hours Child Protection Services and then with the Adolescent Services Unit, working with street entrenched youth in Vancouver.

It was during this time that Beverley met the love of her life, Martin Lewis. Bev and Marty spent a wonderful 28 years together, doing things she loved most: swimming at the aquatic centre, snorkelling in Jamaica, yoga at the West End Community Centre, walking their dogs in the woods or along the beach, exploring the streets of New York, working on one project or another in her craft room, and, of course, reading the weekend papers while listening to CBC’s Saturday Afternoon at the Opera.

Beverley loved her family fiercely and we miss her with all of our hearts. As her favourite poet, Leonard Cohen, sang, “You know my love goes with you as your love stays with me.”

Our deepest thanks go to the kind staff at the Extended Care Unit of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital. A celebration of Beverley’s life will be held on December 15th, details to follow.

CHISHOLM, Dr. Forbes Robert October 22, 1954 –

November 20, 2018

Rob was born in Calgary, Alberta. While living with his family on an acreage in the Bearspaw district he learned to ride horseback. Later, living near Priddis, he was entranced with his summer job of helping a local rancher. In grade nine, at Red Deer Lake School he received the Governor General Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement; in grade twelve at Lord Beaverbrook High School in Calgary, he earned three awards – academic, athletic and social. After two years of studying for a B.Sc. in Agriculture at U of A his high marks allowed him to skip two pre-vet years and go right into Veterinary Medicine at U of S. He graduated with distinction with a DVM Degree in 1978. For several years he practiced in a large animal clinic in Strathmore. Then, with help from his father, he bought The Three Walking Stick Ranch, a cow/calf operation in the Porcupine Hills west of Claresholm. He loved the ranch and loved working with cattle, particularly when riding a favourite saddle horse. His skill in breeding produced superior beef much sought after by buyers. Rob participated in brandings, round-ups, weaning and other ranching activities (which might have occasionally included a wee dram of whisky or a cribbage board!). He worked, and played, alongside neighbours and local ranchers developing wonderful, lifelong friendships. His skill as a vet was valued and often called upon by his community. During the financially lean years of Alberta’s BSE outbreak, Rob worked full time as a vet in the Claresholm Veterinary Clinic and as a full-time rancher – his working days were long, indeed. His greatest joy was sharing the ranching way of life with his kids. Rob taught gymnastics to Claresholm children and helped them work through 4H. The Hills and his community inspired him to write cowboy poetry which he read at many public events. He was instrumental with the East Trout Grazing Association and was active in Ducks Unlimited for 35 years. His hobby of playing the bagpipes grew into performing at Robbie Burns suppers and other local events. He held the position of Pipe Sergeant in the Lethbridge Legion Pipe Band and his band mates were a close circle of friends. He was very proud of his two sons who developed piping talents that exceeded his own. Rob is survived by his son Leigh (Bronwyn) and their children – Isolde, Cassian, Finnian; his brother Douglas (Sandra) and their three children; his sister Mary Jane (Ty Pfeifer) and their three children; his sister Jessie (Spencer MacCosham) and their four children; and his parents Merritt and Benni Chisholm. He also is survived by his estranged wife Robin and children Shannon, Gavin, Alec (Laura) and grandsons John and Gordon. During the years of Rob’s journey with cancer, his three siblings and oldest son formed a dedicated support group. His wonderful neighbours and friends gave him hours of skillful help and much sincere kindness – they truly were an inspiration. A Celebration of Rob’s Life will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 26, 2018 at the Claresholm Community Centre (5920- 8 Street West, Claresholm, Alberta) followed by a reminiscing lunch. All who knew and liked Rob are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Claresholm and District Health Foundation P.O. Box 2638, Claresholm, Alberta T0L 0T0 (www.cdhealth.ca) in Rob’s name will be gratefully accepted.

Allan MacDonald

1937 – 2018

Mr. Allan Michael MacDonald of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Mrs. Audrey MacDonald, passed away at Legacy Lodge on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at the age of 81 years. I was born in Milville, Nova Scotia being the third of six kids – one older sister and four brothers, and my dad worked for the CP Rail. My favorite things to do were to tell funny stories and make people laugh. My favorite thing also is to be with my wife, Audrey MacDonald. My wife, Audrey, my children, Debbie (John), Steven (Xinglan), David, Laurie (Randy) and Danny are very important people in my life, and my grandchildren Jason, Connor, Jacob, Keke, Jocelyn and one deceased grandson Lee. Also important are my brothers, especially Vincent (who is now deceased), and Michael, and of course the people who take care of me. My interests are my kids, sports, especially hockey, camping, family reunions, visits and driving. I love to line dance, visit, drive and spend time with my lovely bride Audrey. I used to drive a school bus. My favorite memory as a child was throwing apples at my brothers in nearby orchards and my brothers and I were altar boys growing up…lol…we used to play jokes on Father Durney (no disrespect), but boy stuff. I was born and raised in Nova Scotia, I stationed in the Armed Forces in Germany, Quebec, Nova Scotia again, Alberta and Ontario and finally back to Alberta again. My most significant life event was to marry Audrey. I served in the Armed Forces, retired as a Warrant Officer, Military Police; worked at the Post Office in Ottawa; drove a school bus then retired. I travelled across Canada, and took a cruise with my wife, brother and sister in law to Graceland and Mexico. My most memorable place to visit was Germany where I met the love of my life, my bride, Audrey. I love all types of foods that are good, especially if you mix them all together, and I love to drink beer in moderation. A public Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 23, 2018 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4th Street South, Lethbridge, AB., with Deacon Cliff Bogdan, officiating. RICHARDS

1927 – 2018

THOMAS EUGENE “TOM” RICHARDS, of Coaldale, reached the end of a long and productive life on Saturday, November 17, 2018. The 91-year-old passed away following a brief illness at the Chinook Regional Hospital, very near the spot where his longtime wife and inseparable partner, Margaret Richards, had predeceased him three months earlier.

Tom leaves behind his sister Lesley (Murray) Bowman; children Jean (Ken) Mackintosh and Harley (Jackie May) Richards; grandchildren Laura (Mark) Fast, Logan Mackintosh, Alison (Clayton) Varjassy, Tuscany Richards, Sterling Richards and Autumn Richards; and great-grandchildren Maisie Fast and Rowen Varjassy.

In addition to Margaret, with whom he will share a columbarium niche at Mountain View Cemetery, Tom was predeceased by his father Ed in 1985, his mother Helen in 1996 and his brother Bill in 2014.

Tom was born in Lethbridge’s Galt Hospital (now the Galt Museum & Archives) on September 3, 1927. He was the oldest of three children belonging to Ed & Helen Richards, who farmed northeast of Coaldale.

Tom’s childhood memories included riding in a horse-drawn wagon to school, waking on frigid winter mornings to the sound of his father starting a fire in the kitchen, and seeing men desperate for work pass by atop rail cars during the Great Depression. A member of the local Air Cadets, he was preparing to follow his father’s example and enlist for military service when the Second World War ended a few weeks before his 18th birthday.

Tom and his younger brother Bill remained on the family farm near Tempest, and with the help of their parents expanded the operation to include land southeast of Chin.

On November 14, 1955, Tom married Margaret, a Vancouver girl he met while she was visiting a friend in Lethbridge. They later had two children, Jean and Harley, and spent the next 34 years on the farm.

Tom and Margaret moved to Coaldale in 1989, and resided there for almost all of their remaining years. At the time of his death, Tom was living in the Sunny South Lodge – not far from the curling rink where he had spent much of his winter leisure time over the years.

Tom’s family will celebrate his life at a private gathering. They respectfully decline flowers and other tributes, as well as donations or gifts in lieu thereof. Instead, they wish to thank Tom and Margaret’s many friends and acquaintances for enriching the couple’s lives over the years.

CHISHOLM, Dr. Forbes Robert October 22, 1954 –

November 20, 2018

Rob was born in Calgary, Alberta. He developed a fascination with animals as a small child living with his family on an acreage in Bearspaw where he communed with nature and learned to ride horseback. During adolescence Rob was hired by a local rancher as a summer farmhand where he cut his teeth as a rancher which would develop into his passion and career. Rob excelled in academia from a young age. In grade nine at Red Deer Lake School he received the Governor General award for outstanding academic achievement. In grade 12 at Lord Beaverbrook High School he earned three awards for exceptional academic, athletic and social aptitude. After two years of studying for a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at the University of Alberta his high marks allowed him to skip two pre-vet years of study and go directly into veterinary medicine at the University of Saskatchewan where graduated with distinction as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1978. Rob practiced in a large animal clinic in Strathmore for several years before purchasing, with help from his father, the Three Walking Sticks Ranch, a cow/calf operation in the Porcupine Hills west of Claresholm. He loved the ranch and loved working with cattle, particularly when riding his favourite saddle horse, Bugsy. His skill in breeding produced exceptional and widely sought-after beef. Rob participated in brandings, round-ups, weaning and other ranching activities (which might have included a wee dram of whisky or a cribbage board now and then) but his greatest joy was sharing the ranching way of life with his kids. He worked, and played, alongside neighbours and local ranchers developing wonderful, lifelong friendships. His skill as a vet was valued and often called upon by his community. During the financially lean years of Alberta’s BSE outbreak he worked full time as a vet at the Claresholm Veterinary Clinic in addition to tending the ranch. His working days were long indeed. Rob was a respected and active member of the community who taught gymnastics to children and helped lead the Claresholm 4H chapter. He was an instrumental part of the East Trout Grazing Association and Ducks Unlimited for 35 years. The Hills and his community inspired him to write cowboy poetry which he read at many public events. Rob’s hobby of playing the bagpipes grew into esteemed and in-demand performances at local events, especially annual Robbie Burns suppers. He held the position of Pipe Sergeant in the Lethbridge Legion Pipe Band and made lifelong friendships with his band mates. He was very proud of his two sons who developed piping talents that exceeded his own. Rob is survived by his son Leigh (Bronwyn) and their children – Isolde, Cassian, Finnian; his brother Douglas (Sandra) and their three children; his sister Mary Jane (Ty Pfeifer) and their three children; his sister Jessie (Spencer MacCosham) and their four children; and his parents Merritt and Benni Chisholm. He also is survived by his estranged wife Robin, children Gavin, Shannon, Alec (Laura) and grandsons John and Gordon. During the years of Rob’s illness his three siblings and oldest son formed a dedicated support group. His wonderful neighbours and friends provided Rob with unwavering assistance, compassion and sincere kindness–they truly were an inspiration. We would like to thank and express our deep appreciation to the many caregivers at the Claresholm hospital for the high level of care and comfort provided to Rob. A Celebration of Rob’s Life will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 26, 2018 at the Claresholm Community Centre (5920- 8 Street West, Claresholm, Alberta) followed by a reminiscing lunch. All friends and acquaintances of Rob are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Claresholm and District Health Foundation P.O. and weep;

Kimpton Edward Johns

1957 – 2018

Kimpton Edward Johns (Kim) of Lethbridge beloved son, brother, Uncle and friend passed away after a short battle with cancer on November 16, 2018 at the age of 60yrs. Kim was predeceased by his Dad Lyal Johns. Kim led a full and adventurous life, with a deep love for the outdoors, all of nature and it’s wonders, especially fishing and rock hounding. He was an avid fly fisherman and had a knack for locating Ammolite, which he had a small collection. In his younger years, he was an accomplished Bull Rider and rode Saddle and Bareback Broncs on the Coors Pro Circuit. During that time, he also travelled with rodeo stock owned by the Cox family out of High Prairie working as a Bull Fighter. Kim worked a variety of jobs early on, starting out with Buchanan Lumber as so many young people in High Prairie did. He later went to work for Spendiff Transport and obtained his Class 1 while working there. After that he drove, transport, logging and cattle liners for many years. Kim took a break from trucking, trained as a Medic, moved to the Crowsnest Pass to work, and was an active member of the Crowsnest Pass Rescue Squad. The road beckoned and he went back to trucking, primarily hauling livestock, owning his own truck during the late 90’s. He also drove the infamous Ice Roads. Kim’s final venture was of his own design, a unique Eavestroughing business primarily providing large-scale plans and installation on the Colonies around Southern Alberta and into Saskatchewan. No matter what he undertook he was always respected for his compassionate caring heart, his honesty and unfailing gift of seeing the best in and putting others interests before his own. He loved a good laugh, a day on the river with no clocks, the company of loved ones, a good story, and a variety of music. He had a passion for history, especially that of the coming of age of Canada and the US, WWI, WWII, Vietnam and Korea. Kim was a rare soul in our world so often marked with selfish cruelty. His steadfast kind, generous and loyal heart demonstrated his tremendous courage. Those who knew him well have memories of him stepping up to defend those not able to do defend themselves or standing beside one doing so. All women who knew Kim could be at ease in his presence as he was a gentleman through and through just like his Dad. Kim had no children of his own, but he loved his nieces and nephews, children of friends and those he took under his wing. Many knew him as “Uncle Kim”. Heard from those paying their respects to his family: “A truthful and honest man” “Very sweet man” “A nice caring man” “A beautiful soul” “He touched many lives” “An awesome neighbor” “Kindest most honest man I ever met” “He will be missed” “Proud to have known him” “A good brother” The words spoken, and the respect given after a person leaves the rest of us behind show the honor they deserve. Thank you for those words to those who spoke them, you have given honor and respect to a man who was powerful in his gentleness and unwavering refusal to participate in the cruelty of the world no matter what. God Bless him and may he roam freely along the banks of the most beautiful rivers. Kim leaves behind his Mom Lorraine Johns, Sister Sharie (Jim), Niece Kristin, Nephews Shaun and Michael (Tracy), Great Niece, Sarah, Great Nephews Jo and Sam and his dear friend Dana. There will be no Service at Kim’s request. His ashes will join his Dad in the Family plot in Weyburn Saskatchewan. RICHARDS

Lilly Paul

1940 – 2018

Lilly Paul passed away peacefully on Friday, November 23, 2018, at the age of 78 years.

Lilly was born on August 18th, 1940 in Josefstal, Ukraine. She immigrated to Canada with her parents and sister in 1952 and settled in Coaldale. She later went to Ontario for school and training to become a registered nursing assistant. Upon her return to Lethbridge, she met her husband Ewalt at a dance in Lethbridge and they were married in 1959 and settled in Magrath. Here they were both employed and raised their family till their retirement to Lethbridge in 2007. Ewalt’s passing in 2015 was very hard on Lilly but she persevered and with the help of family and friends began to enjoy life once again. Her final year was spent fighting cancer and she ‘ran that tough race’ till the end.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Elaine (Rory) Ross of Lethbridge and son Alan (Kari) Paul of Calgary. Lilly leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Nicholas (Alyssa) Ross with great grandson Brooks; Bradley (Caitlin) Ross; and Nathan, Curtis and Megan Paul. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be deeply missed.

Lilly worked at the Magrath General Hospital for 31 years. She was an active member of the Magrath Golf Club and St. John’s Lutheran Church. In her later years, she enjoyed socializing with the ladies of Horizon Village West and maintained her interests in walking, reading and knitting. She loved her family and could always be counted on to provide encouragement and advice for all matters.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital 4C unit for their professional care and special thanks to family doctor Dr. Donald Gibb for his patience, understanding and concern.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00AM. on Wednesday, November 28 at IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 20 Rocky Mountain Blvd. West in Lethbridge with Pastor Lee Loveridge officiating.

Interment will take place at the family plot in Magrath Cemetery at 2:00PM.

Walter Mitson

1922 – 2018

Dr Walter Mitson, beloved father, grandfather and uncle, passed away peacefully in his room at Tudor Manor on November 22, 2018 at the age of 96. He is survived by his three children; Layne (Marilyn), Denise (Grant), and Joyce (Brian); his grandchildren Ben, Mackenzie, Kyra, Nolan, Alyssa, and Austin; his sister in law Anne Overn and his nephew Rob Overn (Janice). He is predeceased by his wife Marie, his sister Joyce, and his parents Michael and Budinka (Betty). Walter was born in Satumara Romania of Serbian descent in 1922. He moved to Canada to reunite with his parents at the young age of 13, making a large part of the journey on his own while caring for his younger sister. He spent a number of years with the Canadian Army, and after that went to school at the University of Toronto and graduated as a Doctor of Optometry. He also held a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alberta. Walter put himself through school in large part by playing accordion. He began preforming at the Palliser Hotel at age 16, and often played with the popular dance band Sonny Fry and the Gentleman of Music when they performed there. His great love of music continued his entire life, and he was still singing at 96. He started his career as an optometrist in 1952, had a thriving practice for 53 years, and retired reluctantly. He dedicated one day a week to attend the smaller communities around Lethbridge that didn’t have an optometrist. He married the love of his life Marie in 1955, and the two of them greatly enjoyed family and friends and travel. Along the way he became the president of the Alberta Optometric Association and was granted a lifetime membership in 1993. He was also a recipient of the Order of Alberta, served on the University of Lethbridge Senate, the University of Calgary Senate and was the Finance Chairman on the Lethbridge Regional Hospital Board. Walter and Marie also traveled to the British Virgin Islands on behalf of the Federal Development Agency (CIDA), where he supervised a team that did the eye examinations of every school child. He truly loved his community, and was active in the Lions club, Elks club and the Masons. Walter had a tremendous zest for life. He and Marie loved to entertain, and their parties often featured many musicians. He was an avid salmon and fly fisherman, and usually managed to catch his limit. He also took up golf later in life, and thought he never had a bad game because he enjoyed it so much. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL – 610 4 STREET SOUTH, Lethbridge, AB. There will be a private graveside service at Mountain View Cemetery for family members.
