HILL

HILL, PATRICIA IONE McKEE – February 24, 1947

– June 28, 2018

Formerly of Kingsville, Ontario, now from Cardston, Alberta.

After a long and courageous battle with cancer and surrounded by family, Patti returned to the loving arms of her Saviour. She fought courageously, smiled gracefully and endured to the end despite her trying thirteen year struggle.

She is survived, and will always be remembered by her husband of forty-seven years, Bill, and their five children Karri (David) Stewart of Lethbridge, Alberta, Scott (Cassandra) Hill of London, Ontario, Kim (Patrick) Fisher of Spruce Grove, Alberta, Jeff (Lindsey) Hill of Cardston, Alberta and Mark (Marie) Hill of Edmonton, Alberta. In addition, she is adored by 21 grandchildren and many, many friends and other family. She looked so forward to a wonderful reunion with her parents Harry and Ione McKee, her brother, David, her sister, Heather, and very recently, her dear step mom and friend, Clarice McKee.

She was born in Windsor, Ontario and raised there where she grew and learned from so many wonderful people. One of those people was Orville Tushton who taught she and her family the gospel of Jesus Christ. At the age of 15, she chose to be baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which she said was the biggest pivotal moment of her life. It was a decision that she never regretted and she shared her tender feelings about it with all of her family often. She graduated from St. Clair Teachers College and loved her days teaching. She taught at many times throughout her life and in her later years, she discovered her love of motivational speaking. As an accomplished speaker, she touched many lives with her positivity and enthusiasm. After marrying Bill in Cardston, Alberta on December 23, 1971, they raised their family in Kingsville, Ontario.

Her mortal life was filled with music, singing, dancing, laughter and service to others. Her summers were spent at the family cottage in Tobermory, Ontario. Many of her fondest memories are from times there. In recent years, this love grew to encompass Southern Alberta. With the top down on her Sebring convertible, and ABBA playing loudly, she loved to take new friends for wind blown rides to the mountains. She saw beauty in both these places of the world and cherished her times in both.

She has been described as an “elect lady”. Her elect status allowed her to establish her legacy of her family. She dearly loved her family and felt that each of her five children strove to exemplify the qualities that she tried to teach them. Those qualities will continue to live on in her grandchildren. She was gracious and graceful. She had a gift of being able to empathize with others even if she had not experienced what they had. She was able to cheer, encourage and lift everyone she met. She had an innate ability to inspire and uplift those around her, to bring joy where it was difficult to find and to apply her “touch” to make her home and surroundings beautiful. Her courage through this difficult battle has been an inspiration to all.

Patti’s mission here, that of wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, friend and inspiration to many, has been successfully completed, and in her words, she has graduated. She looked so forward to the next life with those who had passed on before her and eventually with those who will join her in the future.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff and team at St. Michael’s Palliative Care Unit. They were all so wonderful and showed great compassion.

Friends may meet the family at the Legacy Funeral Home, Cardston on Tuesday, July 3rd, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. or at the Church from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the Service.

The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, July 4th, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Temple Street Chapel, located at 355 3rd St. W, in Cardston, Alberta.

MARK CORY SCHIKOWSKY

March 21, 1971 – May 11, 2018

It is with heavy hearts that the family of MARK CORY SCHIKOWSKY announces his sudden passing on Friday, May 11, 2018 after a brief illness, surrounded by his loved ones in Funabashi, Japan.

Mark always knew what he wanted and worked hard to get it, and his successes were many. His biggest success, which he was so very proud of, was his beloved wife and children; they were his world.

A mischievous smile and boisterous laugh told you he was having you on. His sense of humour was a combination of quirk, wit and actions. He always made the most of sharing this gift with others to make them happy.

Mark was well-respected among his many colleagues, as he was very determined and reliable and was always one to deliver on his promises. Over the years, he built his own business in Tokyo and had many colleagues across the world.

He enjoyed the company of others and was popular at many neighbourhood gatherings. Once you entered his circle of friends, he would be a friend forever. Wherever that friendship might have sparked throughout the world, Mark treasured every single one and worked hard to keep in touch with everyone.

Mark leaves behind his wife, Takako and their children, Jasper and Zach; his parents, Louie and Sheila Schikowsky his sister, Kerry (Joost) Van Ham; his parents-in-law, Masayoshi and Kyoko Maezono; his brother-in-law, Takayoshi Maezono as well as numerous uncles, aunts and cousins in Canada and Wales.

HARRIS

Died June 22, 2018

INEZ GIBB HARRIS was born to Joseph Franklin Gibb and Mabel Stark Gibb on April 25, 1925 in Hillspring Alberta. Her maternal grandparents were Daniel Stark and Ann Priscilla Birkenhead. Her paternal grandparents were John Lye Gibb and Hannah Simmons Smith (Hannah was the midwife that bought Inez into the world). She was the youngest of 8 children; Stanley, Rosco, Bruce, Dean, Dorthy, Wayne, Bert and Glen.

In 1941 she attended the Calgary Normal School and became a school teacher. She taught school full time from 1945 to 1958. She began teaching in Innisfail AB where she rode a horse three miles each day to a one room school house that had 21 desks and a stove in it. The school was lit with candlelight and they used an out-house of course. Other places she taught were; Glenwood AB, Mountain View AB, Hillspring AB, Taber and Barnwell AB. She worked the summers polishing silver at the Prince of Whales Hotel in Waterton AB.

In 1955 she married Bernarr Harris and they settled in a house east of Taber on Harris Road. They spent more than 62 years in that house. She stopped teaching full time after she was married and continued teaching as a substitute teacher. She worked with the Red Cross and became very involved with the Provincial Fair Organization. She entered as a competitor in many events and ultimately became a Provincial Judge and traveled extensively through the Province to judge fairs. In 1961 they adopted Glade, 1963 Jennifer was adopted and in 1966 Dwight was adopted. She remained very busy in the community and her church. She became a Master Homemaker; cooking, canning, gardening, knitting, sewing, crocheting, needlepointing, tatting and she is probably most known for her quilting abilities; all stitching on her quilts were done with incredibly small stitches.

She lost her eye-sight for the last 15 years of her life. This was frustrating for her as she was unable to be as productive as she would prefer. It is an incredible blessing that she is now able to be with her loved ones and enjoy her eye-sight once again.

Inez is survived by her three children; Glade, Jennifer and Dwight. She has eight grandchildren; Brett, Jessica, Ryan, Tyler, Kyle, Cody Lydia and Hunter. She has one Great Grandchild; Ryder Gregory Davenport.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS, TABER STAKE CENTRE, Taber Alberta. A viewing will be held prior to the Service from 10:00 A.M. to 10:45 A.M. at the church.

LAIT

Dorothy Albert (Key) Lait passed away after a long illness at the Good Samaritan’s, Park Meadows Village on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at the age of 95 years.

“Dot” as she often went by, was born in Bellevue, Alberta on September 6th, 1922, She was the youngest of 6 children born to Dr, James and Effie Key. Many times we laughed as she entertained us with tales of growing up in a household of six kids.

Dot is predeceased by her husband of 58 years Wilfrid John Lait (1999). Mom was a WWII bride. Marrying dad in August of 1940 and then seeing him off to join the navy from Jan. 1941 to the fall of 1945.

Dot is survived by her Children, Elizabeth (Betty) (Gerry) Benn of London Ont., Gary (Carole) Lait of Victoria, B.C., Gordon (Terry) Lait of Seven Persons, Alberta, and James (Karen) of Lethbridge, Alberta. Also survived by 14 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.

In 1961 in her 40’s she attended the Grace Hospital school for several months to earn an LPN degree and was the valedictorian for her class. After graduation she worked at the Grace hospital in Calgary.

Dot and Wilf lived in Calgary for most of their married life and were original members of the Calgary Winter Club. Mom loved the game and did very well at it. Winning many Bonspiels and also the prestigious Tournament of Pearls in 1963. She was one of 3 women in 1969 nominated for Sportswoman of the Year in Calgary.

In later years they lived in St. Albert, where Dad opened his own Automotive Business. As usual, in a family situation Mom became the “extra staff person” helping with cleaning the store and doing whatever else was needed.

After selling the business they moved around from place to place, (Osoyoos BC, Didsbury AB, Lethbridge AB. etc). They kept active curling, golfing, bowling, and spending time with family and friends. They enjoyed their church and the many activities they were involved in. Mom loved to “help” and enjoyed fixing meals and sharing with others. She played the piano by ear and for years was the alto voice as she and her sisters sang duets and joined choirs.

In Mom’s last years she struggled with poor hearing and eyesight. She spent her later life under the great care of the Good Samaritan Facility in Lethbridge.

Now we are grateful she is with her Savior and once again well. We love you Mom and miss you. Condolences can be sent to http://www.evergreenfh.ca

He later became involved with his own Siksikaitsitapi traditions. Barney honored his Blackfoot Ways and was a member of the Horns Society and the Brave Dog Society. Barney lived his entire life drug and alcohol free.

Barney excelled in academia and sports. He graduated from high school in 1994, he then lived and worked on the Pacific Island of Vanuatu, coaching the Vanuatu Men’s National Basketball team. He took initiative in housing projects, setting a goal of adding 200 houses in Piikani before his term ended. Three years into his four-year term, he accomplished this goal. Barney was the voice of the many who were voiceless and advocated for the marginalized population. Barney will be remembered as a strong leader who wanted the best for his people.

Barney lived a full life with endless accomplishments and successes, but none of which could compare to the family he built with his wife. Barney’s life began when he met Kristy in 2002, his true love. Barney and Kristy married in 2009, and had four beautiful children Tess (2005), Payton (2007), Bryleigh (2011), and Declan (2013). STASIUK

Peter Stasiuk, 79, of Duluth MN, passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday June 28, 2018. He was born July 31, 1938 in Lethbridge Alberta to his Ukrainian immigrant parents Joseph and Julia Stasiuk. He graduated from the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute while also working for the CPX railroad.

He played junior hockey in Canada, during which time he was recruited to play collegiate hockey for the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux. He had a great love for his alma mater and was grateful for his amazing hockey experience there, especially helping his team win an NCAA National Championship in his senior year, 1963. In December of 1963 he married the love of his life, Bonnie Swedberg of Fargo ND. Peter and Bonnie have remained avid North Dakota hockey fans ever since.

His life career was in teaching and coaching. His first job was teaching physical education and coaching soccer at Gordon Bell High School in Winnipeg Manitoba. He also taught physical education and coached basketball in Minong, WI. In 1967 he was hired by the Hermantown School District to teach middle school science and coach the fledgling Hermantown Hawks hockey team. His first team consisted of only 7 players. In the 19 years he coached the Hawks, without a rink of their own, he developed the program into respectable contenders. He retired from teaching in 1998.

Peter and Bonnie spent the last 18 winters in Mesa AZ, where he enjoyed playing golf, croquet, and tennis. He had a wicked backhand slice his opponents will remember him for. He also spent hours every day making beautiful creations in the woodshop.

To Peter, a kid at heart, life was all about having fun. Whether it be teaching, coaching, playing sports, or playing with his children, grandchildren, and nieces and nephews, he had an infectious zest for life and shared his enthusiasm with those around him. He was an avid gardener and took joy from making and sharing wine, pies, jelly, jam, and juice from the bounty of his beautiful gardens, vines and trees. He also had a keen interest in all things around him, especially science, nature, and people, which allowed him to make lifelong friends easily.

Peter was preceded in death by his father and mother. He is survived by his wife of 54 years; children Julie (Larry) Edwards of Sanford MI, Pam (Troy) Brattelid of Granville ND, Deb (Chuck) LeRoux of Stillwater MN, and Pete Stasiuk of Duluth; grandchildren Cory Brattelid, Mariah and Sean LeRoux; Elizabeth and Bryan Edwards; brother Victor Stasiuk of Lethbridge Alberta; sisters Anne Ogston of Langley, British Columbia and Rose Lambie of Lethbridge Alberta; in-laws Robert (Lise) Swedberg of Denair CA, and Karen Yost of Mesa AZ; step-grandchildren Tonya (Chris) Stueven and children Kaden and Adley, Kristi Brattelid and children Yusuf and Serine, Travis Brattelid, and Brittany (Steve) Ybarra; and many nieces and nephews. Though we will sorely miss him, we are comforted that he had the love of Jesus in his heart and that we will see him again in heaven.

Visitation Sunday, July 8 from 5-7 PM at Dougherty Funeral Home 600 E. 2nd St in Duluth. Service Monday, July 9 at 11:00 AM at United Protestant Church, 830 88th Ave West, Duluth, with visitation starting at 10:00 AM. Memorials preferred to Duluth Heritage Sports Center Foundation or United Protestant Church, where Peter was a member.

Wayne Robert McLennan

1942 – 2018

Wayne McLennan passed away after a lengthy illness on July 3, 2018, at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital, at the age of 76 years.

He is survived by his children: Teri-Lynn (Laurie) McLennan, Carla (John) Davis, Tania (Dean) Fraser, and Travis (Nicole) McLennan; two grandchildren: Adam and Jarrid Gfrerer; his brother Tim (Kathy) McLennan; nephew Doran McLennan; and niece Cassie McLennan. He was predeceased by his parents: James and Gladys McLennan, and Betty and David King; and one sister, Bonnie McLennan.

Wayne was born in Edson, Alberta on March 4, 1942; and later moved to Coaldale, Alberta where he was raised and lived most of his life. Wayne began his life as a budding entrepreneur and ran several businesses with pride which included: operating J&W Vending with his dad Jim and his brother Tim; the Milk River Inn and Motel; Coalhurst Food and Gas; Founded Ram-Tron Security; and founded Sel-Rite Realty where he worked until his retirement in 2008, specializing in corporate sales.

Wayne was a member and former President of the Coaldale Kinsmen, and of the Elks. He was very active in the sports scene in Southern Alberta. In his early days he was an avid stock car racer in the Southern Alberta Auto Racing League, aided by his mechanic, his dad Jim. He was a competitive curler, which he also enjoyed with his dad Jim and daughter Teri. Wayne was also an original member and shareholder at Land-O-Lakes Golf Club in Coaldale and Indian Hills Golf Club. Wayne enjoyed golfing with his dad Jim, son Travis, and friends, although some may have likened his golf ability to hacking, it did not hamper his enjoyment for the game. Wayne also touted himself as a talented black-jack player, often telling the tale of when he beat Monte Carlo at its own game. Many will remember Wayne as a mainstay at McLennan’s Bar in Coaldale, sharing a shot of ‘buca and friendly conversation, during a big race, a football game, or taking someone’s money shooting a game of pool.

Cremation has been entrusted to MARTIN BROTHERS FUNERAL CHAPELS. In lieu of flowers, Wayne would ask that everyone raise their glass and have a shot of ‘buca, in remembrance of him.

DAVIS, KENNETH EDWARD

JULY 1ST, 1942- JULY 3RD, 2018

Ken’s family announces with great sadness his death on July 3rd at the Andy Moog Hospice Center in Penticton, B.C.

Ken was born in Fort Macleod to parents John and Eva Davis.

Ken is survived by wife Sandra of 53 years, son Wayne of Toronto and daughter Bonnie of Vancouver. Also survived by sister Kay Legrandeur and brother John (Barbara). Nephews Dan, Cary, Cam Legrandeur and Tim, Mike, Luke Davis and their families. Uncle Ken was loved by his nephews. He made them laugh and they all have happy memories.

At a young age Ken left home to make his way in the world. He began his work life as a salesman for a magazine publishing company, a job that would take him across Canada, to the British Isles and eventually to South Africa. He was a natural born salesman and could sell ice to an Eskimo!

Starting in sales he eventually had his own crew; recruiting and managing sales people.

It was in Durban South Africa where he met Sandy on a blind date, they fell in love and married. They had 2 children shortly after, Wayne and Bonnie, who were born In Johannesburg. After 25 years and political unrest during Apartheid, he and Sandra decided Canada was a better opportunity for the family. They packed up kids, their possessions, their cat, and boarded a Greek freighter ship in Pretoria which took them a month to get to New York, then a train to Shelby Montana, Grandpa John picked them up and took them to Alberta.

From there Ken and Sandy drove to the Okanagan looking for a house. On their way to Kelowna, they happened upon a quaint small town named Peachland, saw a for sale sign and stopped. They bought the house right beside a creek close to the lake, and started a new life, where they have lived in the same house since 1977.

Ken’s philosophy was hard work made one successful! He was an avid entrepreneur and started several businesses. He was successful in the insulation business and the underground garden irrigation business. He was his own marketing manager as well as hands on doing the work. He owned an apartment building in Penticton for the last number of years which kept him busy with repairs and maintenance, and plenty of drama!

In retirement his passion was golf, he loved to play poker, and was a darn good snooker player.

He was a wonderful, caring, kind man and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held in Peachland at the Legion on July 15th from 1-5pm. Please bring stories, photos and poems of inspiration.

In 1945 George met Jeanette at a dance and a romance followed. They were married on July 18, 1946. In 1950 when his parents moved to Lethbridge, George and Jeanette moved to the home place where they raised their five children.
George was always interested in fishing and hunting and at one time was a hunting guide. He began raising German Shorthaired Pointers and Bow Valley Kennels was formed. He sold dogs all over Canada and into the States. He enjoyed curling and golfing and was a champion trap shooter. He was also an avid hockey fan. In his later years he looked forward to coffee row every day and a game of crib.
In 1976 George and Jeanette moved into Vauxhall and George continued to farm until his retirement in 1980. They did some travelling and enjoyed going on cruises. A few years after Jeanette passed away, George’s health started to decline and he sold his house and moved to the Clearview Lodge in Taber. In 2011 he moved to the Legacy Lodge in Lethbridge where he resided until his passing.
George was a hard worker, a loving family man and a dedicated community supporter. It was his quiet nature, his incredible sense of humour and his cheerful attitude that we will always remember.

McGRATH

ELSIE OPAL McGRATH, of Lethbridge, AB, beloved wife of the late William J. McGrath, passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Sunday, July 8, 2018 at the age of 83 years.

Elsie will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Andrea Knibbs of Lethbridge, AB, son Sean (Luisa) McGrath of Mississauga, ON and granddaughter Angie Knibbs of Calgary, AB. She will also be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her niece Marilyn Anderson (Bill Elliott), grand-niece Dawn (Bob) Campbell, and their sons Riley, Wyatt, and Duncan. Elsie also leaves to mourn her beloved nieces and nephews in Manitoba – Essie, Sam (Robin), Scott (Violet), Janette, Noreen (Rick), Patty, Jocie, and Clayton (Bonny) and grandnephews Gordon of Lethbridge, and James of St. Albert. She was predeceased by her parents John Cummings and Elsie Falconer, sisters Irene Viznaugh and Marie Thomas, her brother Frank Anderson, brothers-in-law Billy Viznaugh and Ian Thomas, niece Kathy Anderson-Broderson (Brent) and nephews Len Anderson and Miles Thomas.

Elsie was born in Warren’s Landing, MB, and grew up near the shores of Lake Winnipeg. As a young adult she moved to Saskatoon and began her career as a health care aide. While working in the Saskatoon Sanitorium, she met her husband Bill, an immigrant from Ireland with a penchant for writing. He wooed her with his love letters and they married in 1959, settling in southern Saskatchewan. In 1966 they moved to Lethbridge, and Elsie began working at the Lethbridge Auxiliary Hospital, where she forged lifelong bonds of friendship with her coworkers.

Elsie had a great passion for golf. She and Bill joined the Henderson Lake Golf Club in 1967, and she received her 50 year membership award last July. She loved the game and excelled at it, winning numerous tournaments over the years, including club and city championships. More than trophies however, she valued her deep and lasting friendships with her golfing buddies. She was very much a fixture at Henderson, until these last two years when her health declined.

Each winter while Elsie waited for the course to open, she kept herself busy. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and The Lethbridge Food Bank, and loved to help yearly with Operation Red Nose. She enjoyed her days at both the Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization and Nord-bridge Seniors Centre, visiting and working on her puzzles. In later years she especially loved to spend time with her ‘grandboys’ Riley, Wyatt, and Duncan.

Elsie dealt gracefully and positively with her health concerns over the years. She may have walked with a limp and a cane, but she did it while humming and whistling a tune. In celebration of Elsie’s life, a Memorial Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB, on Friday, July 13, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Glenda Wert officiating. A Reception will follow at the HENDERSON LAKE GOLF CLUB, 2727 South Parkside Drive, Lethbridge, AB, from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.

The family would like to especially thank the staff of 4C and 5B at Chinook Regional Hospital, and Drs. Leam, Brewer and MacIntyre for their kindness and care these last months.

Allan Park

1949 – 2018

Allan Lee Park of Fort Macleod, Alberta, beloved husband of Catherine Park passed away suddenly on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at the age of 68 years young.

Allan was born on October 9, 1949 to Benson and Hazel Park in the log house on their family farm west of Dungannon, Ontario. He attended school in Dungannon and after finishing school, he worked on the farm with his dad and with other area farmers. On October 10, 1965, the day after his 16th birthday, his brother Larry drove him and three of his friends to the train station in nearby Stratford, Ontario and the four boys headed West.

Allan immediately fell in love with Southern Alberta and was proud to call it home. Although he never forgot his family history and where he came from, he embraced his life and the history that preceded him here. Allan met the O’Sullivan family upon his arrival to the Fort Macleod area. He was welcomed as a family member and learned the art of concrete which became his craft.

In 1971 Allan married Cathy Buzunis. Together they raised two daughters, Angela and Leanne and later two grandsons, Nicholas and Eric who were the absolute light of his life.

Allan was a sports fanatic, a lover of every sport, especially hockey, baseball and boxing. He had an affinity for Muhammad Ali, the Montreal Canadiens and was known to be a “walking encyclopedia” for virtually any sport.

In life and in sport Allan believed in equal opportunity for all. He derived great pleasure from watching kids enjoy themselves and made a point of ensuring that everyone got to have FUN.

Allan was predeceased by his parents, Benson & Hazel Park (1983 & 2005), brother Kenneth Park (2001), sister Beverly Park (1954), nephew Kurtis Reynolds (2010).

ITO

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our brother, uncle, friend and ‘step uncle’, Akira (Duke) Ito on June 29, 2018 after a brief struggle with cancer at the age of 91. Akira (Duke) was born to Masa and Ichisaburo Ito in Haney, B. C. on January 7, 1927. He received his Elementary and High School education in and around Haney, B.C. His formal education, which was interrupted by the hostilities of World War II, was only the beginning for his pursuit of knowledge. He later completed a four-year apprenticeship program at Beny Chev Olds in Lethbridge and graduated with a Journeyman’s certificate on March 10, 1961 and continued working there until 1966. Duke then went to work at Canada Post until his retirement. Duke was the oldest of six children born to his parents. He is survived by his sister Miyako (Bruce) Stewart, his nephew Mark (Laura) Stewart and Mark’s sons Jordan and Chase, his niece Cathy (Kevin) Nelson and their children James and Stacie. He is predeceased by his father Ichisaburo, his mother Masa, his brothers Tamotsu, Masaru, Motomu and sister Atsuko. Duke also leaves to mourn his friends Ben & Pat Braun and their children Kristi, Robyn and Becky, along with their husbands Troy, Aaron and Gordon and their families. Duke was a beloved Uncle in every sense of the word to Ben & Pat’s family. Duke also leaves to mourn a special friend Laurie Veres. Duke will be sorely missed by these and the many friends he made in his extensive travels around the world. Duke lived life to the fullest. His travels took him around the world as he sought to understand himself in light of other people and cultures. It simply wasn’t enough for him to see the sights but to interact with the people he encountered. His mind was quite literally like a steel trap. Once he encountered knowledge, it was there to stay; for him to reflect on and share with any who would listen. His knowledge of sports (especially baseball and horse racing) was encyclopedic. Duke’s capacity for assimilating knowledge was seemingly endless. He was a lifelong learner. Duke grew up in a family which was firmly rooted in their faith in Jesus Christ. He had many friends at First Baptist Church in Cranbrook, B.C. where he attended when with the Braun family whenever he visited. He was especially clear in his expression of faith as his end drew near. Finally, Duke cared deeply for family and friends. He took an interest in the smallest of details in these people’s lives. He was generous to a fault. Duke will be deeply missed.

RUSSELL

Oct. 31, 1932 – July 7, 2018

FRANCIS (FRANK) RUSSELL Sr, of the Blood Reserve, AB, passed away peacefully at home with his beloved wife Clara by his side, on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at the age of 85 years.

Dad is survived by his children: Ron (Theresa) Healy, Annette Russell, Victoria Russell, Frank Jr. Russell, Kelly (Ron) Thunder Chief. Adopted children: Ivan (Patsy) Healy, Ernestine (Calvin) Red Crow and Connie Tail Feathers. Grandchildren: Dagmar, Shawna, R.J Healy, Monty Crow Chief & Lance (Lana) Healy, Les, Vern Jr., Kayla (Tim) Frank, Scotty, Tracey (Godfrey), Eulalia, Sarah Goodstriker, Rodney, Kenny (Amber) Skye (Damien), Francine, Iinakay (Meadow), Maggie, Guy Russell and Andrea Fox. He is also survived by his brother Camille (Lucy) Russell and sister in-law: Elizabeth Big Throat and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Predeceased by children: daughter Eleanor (Healy) Crow Chief, son Curtis Russell, grandson Chris Healy and great-great granddaughters Nevaeh and Tori and brothers Sam, Guy, Willy, Paul and Leo Russell, and sisters Laura Madl and Mary Russell.

Dad was always a very hard worker always sure to provide for his family working in the field of road construction as a Heavy Equipment operator beginning first with Cardston Public of Highways, Lethbridge Department of Roads and then up into his retirement with Blood Tribe Roads and Dam (Blood Tribe Public Works). Dad always took pride in maintaining his homestead as can be seen by the many trees that he planted. Dad’s days were always spent in the comfort of his home sitting alongside the love of his life Clara. Dad loved mom so much that he would do everything and anything possible to make her happy and they enjoyed each other’s company. When mom would go visit her sister and or any of their children, dad would get worried, and begin calling mom to ask when she will return home from the overnight stay. Dad enjoyed and treasured every moment with all his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He travelled and attended all the many sports that all the grand kids played, and he was their biggest fan. Dad’s strong traditional way influenced his children and grandchildren to continue the ways of our Blackfoot Tradition. Dad’s strong Blackfoot belief influenced his family to participate in our Blackfoot Sundance. He cherished the moments when he watched his grandchildren participate in local rodeos and powwows. Dad and mom made their house a home and would always make sure to encourage us all to pray the rosary. One of mom and Dad’s highlights was a seven day pilgrimage to Portugal, Spain, where they visited the blessed sites behind the history of Our Lady of Fatima. That’s how he gave his great-grandson, Pierce, his Indian name, “Aappamoo”. Every day, he always asked for his grandson, Rider, who always sang for him at the age of three. Together they said the rosary diligently and attended church every Sunday. Dad had such a great sense of humor, always joking with his grandchildren calling them ‘little pigs’ and tickling them with his mustache. He would often tease and say that he ate his ring finger by accident thinking it was a hot dog and covering their eyes when people were kissing in a movie with his missing finger.

Dad loved mom so much that he made sure to tell her “I Love You” one last time before peacefully passing away. Our dear dad and grandpa will be truly missed, and he will leave a very huge void in all our lives, but we take great comforting in knowing that he was happily greeted by his parents Paul & Annette Russell, his children, grandchildren, siblings and family members that have gone before him. We love you dad.

A Wake will be held at WHITE CALF HALL, Blood Reserve, AB, on Friday, July 13, 2018 from 7:00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ST. MARY’S IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, Blood Reserve, AB, on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. with Father Pawel Andrasz O.M.I. celebrating. The Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery.

RITTENHOUSE

With heavy hearts and great sadness we say “good bye” to a beloved husband, father, grandfather & great-grandfather, RICHARD “DICK” GORDON RITTENHOUSE, on Friday, July 13, 2018 at the age of 93 years.

Dick was born in Edmonton, Alberta on April 12, 1925 and raised on the family farm near Hardisty, Alberta. He attended a rural school called “Science Hill” and became the janitor of the school at age 11. Dick would walk 1 ¼ miles to light a fire in the wood and coal burning school heater, even on the coldest days.

In later years he farmed; first with horses and later with a tractor. During the winters Dick worked in the lumbering and logging industry in the Edson area. Sadly, allergies forced him to give up farming in the fall of 1948 so he came to Lethbridge to visit his sister where he has resided ever since.

Dick met Ruth, his “soul mate and best friend” in 1949 and they were married in 1952, enjoying 65 happy years together.

Dick has done many things through the years. He operated the Hilltop Service Station and in 1952, built his own service station on 13 St. North. He sold the service station in 1958 and went into the Heating and Air Conditioning business. He ventured into General Insurance and then manufactured his patented live stock waters and hog feeders. He later expanded into Mechanical and General Construction.

Dick enjoyed each new challenge and appreciated all his employees and sub-trades. He was a man of boundless energy and zest for life, teaching us that there must be time to play as well as a time to work and that work is a privilege denied many. The family spent many summer days at the Christina Lake Resort in B.C. for camping, water skiing and family fun.

Dick and Ruth loved to travel. After semi-retiring they enjoyed many trips in their motor home, travelling extensively throughout Canada and the U.S.A and spending many winters in Palm Springs, California.

Dick was a very private person but would go to great lengths to help family and friends; he always had time for everyone.

He will be dearly missed by his loving wife Ruth and forever be remembered by his family: Dr. Bryan (Jean) Rittenhouse and their son Dr. Neil (Karen), great-grandson John Richard and daughter Allison; David (Leena) Rittenhouse; Diane (Laurent) Beaudin and their two daughters, Erin (Leo), great-grandchildren, Vincent, Carmela and Kimberly (Pat); Elaine (Dr. Anders) Anderson and their two sons, Anders and Eric, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Dick was predeceased by his infant son Randal, infant grandson Brady Beaudin, his parents Abraham and Elizabeth Rittenhouse, two brothers Merle and Leslie as well as four sisters Dorothy, Elva, Hazel and Grace.

Family would like to thank the wonderful staff on 4C at the Chinook Regional Hospital for their kindness, support and caring hearts.

Flowers are gratefully declined. For those who wish, charitable donations may be made to the McKillop United Church (Growing the Dream Fund): 2329 15 Ave S, Lethbridge, AB T1K 0X5, or a charity of your choice.

At his request, a private family service will be held at a later date.

Cremation is entrusted to Cornerstone Funeral Home.

HAWS

With great sadness and a touch of relief, we announce that Zola Ann Johnson Haws, of Brooks, Alberta, has been released from the confines of her 96 -year -old body. Her spirit and cognition remained ever vibrant and youthful. Zola left this world on Thursday, July 12, 2018 in Brooks, after a somewhat arduous struggle. She was predeceased by two youngsters: Geraldine and Dean, by her husband, Ellis Dean Haws and son-in-law Gary Schmitz. She was also predeceased by her parents, Myrtle and Leith Johnson and six of her 11 siblings; namely: Gayle Johnson, Beth Gibb, Dean Johnson, Wayne Johnson, Julie Dalton, and Bryon Kaye Johnson. She is survived by five of her seven children: Dixie Schmitz, Jane Marsh, Joseph (Pat) Haws, Michael Haws, and Corrine (Max) Tateson. Zola felt blessed to have 19 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and posed for five, five-generation photos. Also surviving are four beloved sisters: Letha Lamb, Jackie Farnsworth, Peggy Hiatt, and Rita Simmons. Zola was well known and respected for her personal integrity, and her strength of character. She brought skill and talent to any project she touched; and could be counted on to face any situation, good or bad, head on with a stalwart spirit. She carried more genealogical information in her head than most, and was lucid and bright almost to the end. She loved her children, her family, and her Church adamantly. During Zola’s 96-year-old life span, she went from sleeping three or four deep in frigid-cold beds, to cooking for threshing crews at age 16, to raising four kids in a two-roomed shack with no amenities, to working at the lab at Vauxhall Foods and finally, to pumping out many crocheted afghans in between visits from the Tateson kids, while she lived in Newbrook Lodge, Brooks the past 10 years. Mom’s life was not without its challenges, but she remained graceful and gracious throughout. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 20 in two parts: The Church Service will be at 11:00 AM from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Brooks Ward, (40 – 10 Street West) with a luncheon to follow. The interment will be in the Barnwell Cemetery, Barnwell, Alberta at 3:30 PM in the family plot. In memory of Zola, if friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Charity of one’s Choice.

DUCE

January 15,1933 – July 14,2018

FERN DUCE completed her life’s journey on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the age of 85 years. Fern is survived by her husband of 65 years, DeWayne Duce and their four children; Janet(Leslie) of Coaldale, AB, Kendall (Kerri) of Golden, B.C., Lisa (Shane) of Billings, MT, Greg (Annette) of Sierra Vista, AZ; 16 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren all who loved and adored her as much as she was devoted to them. Her sister Wanda and many extended family members will dearly miss her as well. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Enoch and Gertrude Lybbert, her brothers George and John, a great granddaughter Giselle, and all her half brothers and sisters. Fern was born into a simple and humble home in Glenwood, Alberta, the youngest of a combined family of 12. At the age of 14 she moved to Cardston where new friends were made. She later met and was courted by a “dark and handsome” young man. They were later married and sealed in the Cardston Temple in 1952. Several Southern Alberta towns were home to DeWayne and Fern and their children until the family settled in Lethbridge in 1961. Mom was a hard worker, dependable and honest. She worked at the College in the Food Services, managed and co-owned Tom’s House of Pizza and The Sub Shop, devoted many years to the Alberta Lung Association and worked with her daughter at Village Quilts. Mom instilled in her children the same values that she had been taught in her life examples of compassion, understanding and service. Family was first and foremost. She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in many callings. Her life exemplified that of Christ, her testimony of the gospel was strong, her faith unshakeable. We who are left behind have tremendous shoes to fill to honor her whom we call wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. Fern wanted to express her thanks to all who visited and have shown love and kindness to her and her family, her caregivers at the hospital and especially the compassionate palliative care staff. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. at THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS, 2223 – 6 Ave North, Lethbridge, AB. Friends are welcome to meet with the family at the church, on Wednesday July 18, 2018 from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and prior to the service from 12:00 P.M. to 12:45 P.M. Bob is survived by his wife of 10 years, Nadine, step daughter Kara Carriere (Ryan), step son Michael Bazylewski (Jennifer) and five loving grandchildren, Mya, Alex, Jesse, Lucius and Mason. As well, Bob has family members in both Ottawa and North Bay, Ontario. Bob was born in North Bay on June 15th, 1941 and is predeceased by his father Dan Girard, and mother Ray. Bob was very proud of his service to the Canadian Forces as a Military Chaplain and some of his many postings included Chilliwack, BC, Greenwood, NS, Petawawa, ON, Cold Lake AB. He also served as Command Chaplain of the Army, Europe, and the Air Force. Upon retirement from the CF he became Director of Pastoral Services at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, MB. After moving to Lethbridge Bob sat on a number of Boards including Covenant Health and Lethbridge Housing. At a date yet to be determined there will be a Prayer service at Beechwood’s Interfaith Sacred Space in Ottawa. As Bob spent his last days in St. Michel’s in Lethbridge he spoke of the time he sat on the board of Jocelyn House in Winnipeg. It was his dream to improve the availability of hospice beds for those in need. Bob gave to many charities throughout his life, and would be honoured to have donations made in his name to Jocelyn House Hospice, Winnipeg. info@jocelynhouse.ca or to a charity of your choice. Bob’s strength of character and sense of humour shined bright his whole life, and never faltered to the end. He continued to show his love and kindness to everyone.
