BAGLEY

PEARL MAUD CLIFTON BAGLEY passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at the age of 81. Pearl was born in Lethbridge, Alberta Canada on May 18th, 1935. She was born the fourth child to Lorraine & Ruby Clifton and preceded in death by both parents and her three siblings, Verda, George and Elmer. Pearl grew up in Coalhurst, Alberta Canada on a farm homesteaded by her parents. There, she worked with her family harvesting sugar beets, learning to cook, making homemade candy and appreciating the value of always being on time.

In addition to learning how to work hard at a young age, Pearl had natural musical talent and was often called on to sing at church and other functions. Pearl, a lifelong pianist, always made music an important part of her life enjoying the traditional sounds from her day such as the Lawrence Welk Show.

A farm girl at heart, Pearl lived on farms or ranches in Southern Alberta and British Columbia though it was the prairie that she seemed to prefer and enjoyed returning home to see her parents until their death. Later in life while raising their two teen age sons Pearl and Parley sold the ranch and moved their family to Logan, Utah. While Pearl never resided in Canada again she returned often and was a proud Canadian – often commenting on how Canadian Kentucky Fried Chicken, Chinese food and many other types of food just tasted better in Canada. Long after moving from the farm in to town Pearl continued to enjoy her flower garden, gathering fresh vegetables from the garden and canning each year during the fruit harvest. Pearl, as sweet as the homemade candy she made, was always looking to help others serving faithfully as a visiting teacher, compassionate leader and many other callings in her Ward.

Pearl is survived by her husband Parley Bagley to whom she was married for 50 years. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Cardston Alberta LDS Temple. Pearl is also survived by her two sons Gary (Briana) of Pocatello, Blaine (Vicki) of Salt Lake City along with numerous nieces and nephews. Also left to mourn her loss are 4 granddaughters and 5 great granddaughters – only raising boys what a joy her granddaughters were to her.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 13, 2017 in the Logan 13th Ward Chapel, 100 East 200 South in Logan. A viewing will be held on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street in Logan, and prior to the services on Friday morning at the church from 9:00 to 9:45 AM. Interment will take place in the Fairview, Wyoming Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at http://www.allenmortuaries.netThe family would like to express their profound appreciation for the many acts of kindness towards Pearl and Parley by their ward family, both known and unknown.

KETEL, Ralph John

1954 – 2017

Ralph John Ketel, 62, of Peachland BC, formerly of Pine River Manitoba, and Picture Butte Alberta passed away on January 9, 2017 at Hospice House in Kelowna BC. Ralph lived a full, rich life. He was sorry to leave his wife, Gwynn, and family so early, but thankful to be at rest in the Lord.

Ralph was born April 4, 1954 in Smithers, BC, and shortly after his birth, his parents, John and Annie Ketel, took him along when the family returned to southern Alberta. Ralph had an energetic, inquisitive, friendly personality, enjoying visits from anyone who happened to stop by. Early in his life he developed a passion for horses; raising, and training many throughout his life. He always had a strong draw towards the cattleman life style – he drank his coffee black and wore his jeans blue. Ralph left high school prior to graduating so he could farm with his father. He was a life-long learner and became a very proficient dairy farmer and then cattle rancher. His cattle knowledge was well respected and was often called on by neighbors to help with difficult situations.

He kept a simple, profound relationship with his Almighty God, trusting in the glorious mystery of Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour which stirred his soul and gave him strength and peace.

His community involvement was appreciated wherever he lived. Ralph had a special heart for local youth. He was regularly involved as a leader in the local boys club, community youth group, high school rodeo, and as a Bible Camp supporter. Ralph loved the outdoors, the mountains, the prairies, the Manitoba bush, the wildlife and he shared it with family and friends through many hikes, skiing, miles of fencing chores, cattle working, trail rides, and by bringing home wildflowers for Gwynn.

Ralph and Gwynn were blessed with 38 1/2 years of marriage. Together they accepted the wonderful, sometimes challenging joy of raising a large family of six sons and one daughter.

Predeceased by: infant son Jonathan, father John Ketel, brother-in-law Jim Hoogeveen, father-in-law Harry Hoogeveen, daughter-in-law Ashley Bell-Thurlow.

He will be lovingly remembered by: wife Gwynn; children and grandchildren Sid & Melissa, Max; Dave & Shannon, Micah, Noah; Rob & Jennica; Jack & Shelby; Crystal; Kyle Thurlow, Brendon; Scott Thurlow, Shayla, Madyson, Kenzley. His dear Mother Annie Ketel. Mother-in-law Lydia Hoogeveen. Siblings Marty & Jacky, Andrew & June, Margaret. Siblings-in-law Lois, Karen & Dan, Daryl & Bonnie, Joy & Ben, Jayne & Tony, along with a large extended family and friends around the world.

The funeral service will be held at 2pm on January 15, at the Everden Rust Funeral Home in Kelowna, BC, and he will be laid to rest at Peachland Cemetery.

Memorial donations in Ralph’s name can be made to Maple Springs Bible Camp in Peachland, BC or the Bible camp of your choice.

Sybil was predeceased by her husband Bert, daughters Jeanne Balog and Juanice (infant), grandson Todd, sisters Mavis Taplin and Carmen Allen as well as brother in-law, Lee Taplin.

Sybil was born on November 22, 1924 in Calgary, Alberta to parents Martha and Vallen Orcutt. She was raised on the family farm east of Warner, Alberta. After completing her schooling, she worked at the 15 Cent Store in Lethbridge. During that time, she met the love of her life, Bert Swanson and they were married on February 13, 1943. They farmed on the family farm in the Milk River area.

Her interests were many and varied. It was during her later years that she became a very active golfer and the #5 hole at the Milk River Golf Course was renamed “Sybil’s Coulee!” Sybil enjoyed curling with her friends, known as ‘The Golden Girls!” and was fearless when it came to trying other sports such as downhill skiing and at the age of 72, rollerblading around Waterton Park.

Sybil was a wonderful cook and known for her sewing abilities. When her daughters were growing up you could find her at the sewing machine making outfits for the start of the new school season.

THERRIAULT

Jacqueline Marie (Bechtel) Therriault passed away peacefully surrounded by family in Pincher Creek on January 11, 2017 at the age of 85.

Jackie was born on April 15, 1932 in Pincher Creek, the third of four daughters born to Eva Eulahia (Ekelund) and John Harvey (Jack) Bechtel of the Spread Eagle foothills near Twin Butte, Alberta. Her natural musical talent became apparent at an early age when she would sit on her Daddy’s knee with her hands on his while he played, or picking up on the songs her older sisters were practicing for their lessons with her wonderful knack of playing by ear. She rode her pony Bessie to the one room Spread Eagle school, then continuing her schooling in Pincher Creek, staying in the dorm and then later with her Dad in their home on Kettles Street. Her pursuit of the joy of music led her on some very interesting journeys all while helping raise her younger sister Sally.

Playing in the Twin Butte hall with the family band “The Gloom Busters” at the age of 7, she began a lifelong career of playing for dances and every kind of social gathering in the community. Her sparkling energy showed through, and brought much joy to many. She was a member of the Phil Lethbridge band the Westwinds for over 40 years, they travelled many miles together bringing dance music to a variety of functions all over southern Alberta and into BC.

In 1954 she married Alyre Therriault and together they raised their four children on the family ranch as well as their home in Pincher Creek. Teaching music, playing for dances and providing musical entertainment for the community seemed to keep our home busy. She was no ordinary woman, she could be peeling potatoes for supper in the kitchen while a music student was doing their lesson in the music room and tell them what wrong note they played.

She was also a member of the Roaring Lions (serving as president for one term), the Community Hall board, and the Community Band. Other things she was proud of were helping to start the annual Carol Festival, and the Cowboy Christmas at the United Church. She played for 63 of the annual Armistice Day ceremonies including the one in 2016.

Jackie was a Grandma extraordinaire and her nine grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren were the beneficiaries of this. A great story teller who loved to tell and play jokes. She made things come alive with the telling.

Jackie is survived by her loving family; daughter Marie (Jim) Cameron and their children Scott his children Zinna and Tristan; Michael; and Jenny and her son Tyden; daughter Audrey (Robert) Jackson and their children Shari (Shaun) Terry and their children Piper, Payton, and Tre; Robyn (Eric) Dressler; daughter Jackie (Frank) Marsh and children Jerett (Kathryn Sinnott) children Benjamin and Evelyn; Nicole (Dylan) Prout and children Maddox, Ava, and Owen; Kelsey (Adam) Green; son Tim (Jan Robertson) Therriault and daughter Amber (Ryan Snider) Vogt and sons Aiden and Oliver; and sister Sally (Doug) Connelly. She was predeceased by her husband of over 60 years Alyre in 2015, her parents Eva and Jack and her sisters Inga Marr, and Nona Bonertz.

Jackie was thankful to remain in the hospital in Pincher Creek where she received wonderful care from the staff. They made a difficult journey much more comfortable.

A celebration of her life will take place on Friday January 20, 2017 at 2:00 in the Pincher Creek Community Hall (287 Canyon Drive, Pincher Creek).

If friends so desire, memorial tribute may be made to S.T.A.R.S. (1441 Aviation Park NE, Box 570 Calgary, Alberta T2E 8M7), or Pincher Creek Municipal Library (Box 2020, Pincher Creek, Alberta T0K 1W0).

Our loving Mom will be greatly missed and fondly remember by many.

ROOT

Betty Fern Root (Ashmore) passed away on January 7th, 2017 in the Sutherland Place Continuing Care facility in Peace River, Alberta where she had resided for the past eight years. Betty will be lovingly remembered by her son Stuart (Denise) Root, grandchildren Raelene (Rob) Marceau, Cheryl (Chris) Sandstra and Heather Coldwell, as well as her great grandchildren: Arden and Jacob Marceau and Vaughn and Shea Sandstra. Her sister Fay Poch, brothers-in-law Walter Rhodes, Jim Culham and numerous nieces and nephews also survive her. She is predeceased by her loving husband John (Jack) Root, her parents Ted and Juanita Ashmore, her siblings June Rhodes, Shirley Culham, Richard (Dick) Ashmore and grandson-in-law Lee Coldwell.

Betty was born in Champion, Alberta on September 9th, 1927, where she was raised until she married her husband Jack on January 18, 1947. The young couple moved to Coleman, AB where her son Stuart was born. They resided in the community until a retirement transition took them to the neighboring town of Blairmore, Alberta. Betty loved music, singing and playing the piano. She was an avid gardener, loving her flowers almost as much as the family dog, King. Her grandchildren fondly remember when she would come to visit in Peace River, bringing a carload of costume jewelry, chocolate chip cookies and banana muffins to share.

In her later years, Betty moved to Sutherland Place to be closer to family in Peace River. Betty subsequently developed dementia, which robbed her of recent memory, yet, transported her back to a time where still had her beloved husband, Jack. It was during this time, that her sense of humor, wittiness and an ability to deliver ‘the best one-liners’ became evident and entertained those who spoke with her. In keeping with Betty’s wishes, a celebration of life will occur this coming summer – while the sun is shining and the flowers are in bloom. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation can be made in Betty’s name to Sutherland Continuing Care.

George (Gerardus) van Rijn

October 6, 1929 – December 24, 2016

It is with very heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear father, George. We were blessed to have had the past six months to care for him during his battle with cancer. Dad had a strong faith and we had many conversations about how he looked forward to being reunited with his beloved wife Tina and “what a glorious day it would be when my Jesus I shall see” (he sang this song constantly). Dad was a caring and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

George was born in Uithoorn, the Netherlands and, when he was 23, he immigrated to Canada with his family. After settling in southern Alberta, he met and fell in love with our Mom, Tina (nee Reimer). Four children were born within 5 years of their marriage, and after many “mis”adventures the family landed on a farm in Cloverdale, BC.

Dad’s love of growing flowers was realized when he and Tina started Chestnut Greenhouses in 1966. George and Tina had a very successful career and were locally famous for the excellent products they grew. They retired 25 years ago to Abbotsford where their property was again full of beautiful flowers.

Dad was predeceased by his wife Tina, his parents and his great granddaughter, Juliet. He leaves his four children, Brenda (Erv) Janzen; Dave (Val); Wayne (Joy); and Beverly (Robin) Burnette; and eight grandchildren: Chris (Nolene), Justine, Ryan, Jordan, Kelsey, Allison, Faith & Ella and his great grandchildren Ollie, Eva & Audrey. Predeceased by his siblings Piet, Riet, Nico, Corry, Joe, Rudy and Eva, George is survived by brothers and sisters Martha, Barb, Tom, Clasina, John, Paul, Nick, Hank, Andy and Jack.

We will celebrate George’s life on Thursday, January 26 at Grace Church at 2:30pm, 2087 McMillian Rd, Abbotsford. A second memorial will be held on January 28 at the Gem of the West Museum, 1306 20 St, Coaldale, Alberta at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers donations to the Holmberg House (Abbotsford Hospice) — abbotsfordhospice.org/donate — would be greatly appreciated. Dad received excellent care there in the last 3 weeks of his life.

Please mail cheques to:

Abbotsford Hospice Society, 32780 Marshall Road, Abbotsford BC V2S 1J7

Irene Thompson

November 27, 1928 –

January 18, 2017

With broken hearts and great sorrow we say farewell to our amazing Mom and Grandmother, Irene Thompson. Mom began her next journey peacefully on Wednesday, January 18, 2017. Our Rene’s love for family defies description and is her greatest legacy. Her mischievous spirit and indomitable strength are her hallmarks. Mom was born on November 27, 1928 in Foremost, Alberta, where she and her twin brother Henry and sister Denie were born and raised. On March 14, 1952, Mom and Dad married, sharing 50 wonderful years of love and friendship. Mom was an active member of the Women’s Circle, Foremost Curling Club, and the Foremost United Church, where she taught Sunday School. She was the catcher for the ladies fastball team and when she returned to fastball in 1968 with the Taber Royals, she brought her trusty old pancake glove out of retirement and continued to play until she was 53. Mom served as the President of the Lethbridge Curling Club from 1973-1974 and the Lethbridge Ladies Fastball Association in 1979. Mom and Dad farmed north of Foremost until they moved to Lethbridge in 1961 with daughters Margaret (Maggie) and Heather. Son John joined the family in 1962 and completed our inseparable clan. We enjoyed many adventures exploring Southern Alberta, Northern Montana, and B.C.- adventures that continued with son-in-law Bob and grandsons Patrick and James. In our Rene’s later years, she continued to love her road trips with no destination in mind, just “to see what we could see”. Rene is survived by her children Maggie (Bob) Belisle, Heather (Don) Donison, John (Heather) Thompson; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren Pat (Jaelyn) Belisle, James (Mindy) Belisle and daughter Lia, Angela Donison (Ralph) and daughter Taylor, Don Donison (Kristi) and sons Wesley and Walker, Melissa Szalynski (Rich) and son Cameron, Lindsay Bueckert (Nigel); by her twin brother Henry Huisman (Marie); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her loving husband Jack; her sister Denie Vandenberg and her parents Bert and Gerrit Dena Huisman. Family is our Rene’s most valued treasure as she is ours. Irene Thompson

November 27, 1928

– January 18, 2017

Rene is survived by her children Maggie (Bob) Belisle, Heather (Don) Donison, John (Heather) Thompson; her grandchildren and great- grandchildren Pat (Jaelyn) Belisle, James (Mindy) Belisle and daughter Lia, Angela Donison (Ralph) and daughter Taylor, Don Donison (Kristi) and sons Wesley and Walker, Melissa Szalynski (Rich) and son Cameron, Lindsay Bueckert (Nigel); by her twin brother Henry Huisman (Marie); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mom was predeceased by her loving husband Jack; her sister Denie Vandenberg and her parents Bert and Gerrit Dena Huisman.

Family is our Rene’s most valued treasure as she is ours. Her love and dedication to all of us was evident in all she did. We love you always and forever.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects between 6:00pm and 7:00pm on Monday, January 23, 2017 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 4 Street South, Lethbridge, AB.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30am on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERIVEW CHAPEL. A private family internment will be held in the Archmount Cemetery.

Mary Anne was born in Red Deer, Alberta in 1956. She married Henry in 1977 and they were about to celebrate 40 years of a wonderful marriage on April 30th.

MACKAY

MARGARET (PEGGY) JOYCE MACKAY (ZINCK) passed away peacefully on January 21, 2017 at Chinook Regional Hospital following a stroke. She was 88 years old.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of sixty years, Donald C. MacKay, her twin brother Bob, sisters Mary Louise and Elizabeth, and her parents Sydney and Mary Zinck. She is survived by son Bruce (Flora) and daughter Gillian and her granddaughters Elizabeth (François) and Maggie.

Peggy was born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, and kept those Maritime roots strong throughout her life with yearly trips back East to visit dear old friends and family. After moving to Lethbridge in 1967, she and Don were active members of McKillop United Church where they made many life-long friends. She was a leader of the CGIT and served the church in a number of capacities. A graduate of Mount Allison University, Peggy remained a life-long learner and an avid reader. She enjoyed playing Bridge and was hard to beat at Scrabble. She worked as a library assistant at Lakeview School and volunteered in the Lethbridge Public Library Read-On program. After retirement, Peggy and Don travelled widely, taking trips to Europe, South America, the U.S.A., as well as their yearly pilgrimages to the Maritime provinces. Peggy loved music, was a long-time supporter of the Lethbridge Symphony and played saxophone in the Community Band for a number of years. She encouraged and supported the developing musical interests of her children and loved playing the family piano until she no longer could. In 1976, Ev moved his family to Lethbridge to pursue his dream of owning his own business, Evcon Farm Equipment, which is still in operation today.

Ev loved spending his time playing Oldtimer’s hockey, watching the “Canes” and could always be seen watching his grandkids at their various sporting activities. His teams were the Edmonton Oilers/Eskimos through and through.

He served on many agriculture boards but was especially proud of his 10 years on the Board of Directors of the Canada West Equipment Dealers Association. There he won their Merit Award as Dealer of the Year in 1995. Ev was also the dealer representative on the Alberta Government Farm Implement Board for many years, stepping aside at the age of 80 years. In all, he was active in the industry for over 60 years.

A day in his life involved him first, checking his stocks, then coffeeing with his buddies, working out at the “Y” and then golfing, when weather permitted. Ev was a car enthusiast and had many different cars throughout his life. He especially enjoyed taking his grandkids for a cruise.

Ev and Connie celebrated their 56th Wedding Anniversary in December. He loved his family more than anything and was so proud of our accomplishments.

SMITH, WAYNE DEAN

“WHEN HE SHALL DIE,

TAKE HIM AND CUT HIM OUT IN LITTLE STARS,

AND HE WILL MAKE THE FACE OF HEAVEN SO FINE

THAT ALL THE WORLD WILL BE IN LOVE WITH NIGHT

AND PAY NO WORSHIP TO THE GARISH SUN.”

Wayne passed away peacefully on January 18, 2017 at the Colonel Belcher in Calgary. Born on September 25, 1920 in Milk River, Alberta to Harry and Francis Smith, he grew up skating and swimming on the river. Wayne wanted to be in business since childhood. His first venture as a teenager was selling Liberty magazines. At the age of 18 Wayne attended Garbutt’s Business College in Calgary. After graduation he joined the army on August 30, 1939. Assigned to the Corps of Military Staff Clerks, he worked in Calgary and Ottawa until his discharge in June of 1947. A family man, Wayne married his beloved Ethel in 1946. They were happily married for 49 years. Together they opened Smith’s Grocery. Eager to embrace new challenges Wayne started at Associated Grocers. With one truck driver and an accountant Wayne developed the business into the largest wholesale grocery company in western Canada and the second largest in Canada, employing around 800 people when he retired. A longtime member of Rotary he valued people and friendships. Wayne was a man of faith and a great believer in the power of positive thinking. Often imparting words of wisdom such as “keep your eye on the doughnut and not on the hole.” He loved westerns because the good guys always won. FLORENCE HESTER GOUW (FOGGIN) passed away peacefully at the St. Michael’s Health Centre, Palliative Care Unit in the early morning of Friday, January 27, 2017 at the age of 80 years.

Florence leaves to mourn her daughter, Dorinda (Mike Chatterton) Gouw and her son Kirk (Carolyn) Gouw. Also left to cherish her memory are her grandchildren, Chad Gouw, Garrett (Hitomi) Chatterton and their son James, Justin (Melissa) Gouw, Logan Chatterton, Brittany Gouw, Seth Gouw and Reanne (Tayler) Losey and their daughter Gabriella. She is also survived by her sister Linda (Bob) Thompson.

Florence was predeceased by two infant siblings, her parents Powell and June Foggin, her husband Jan Gouw, sister Mary Jorgenson and sons Powell Gouw and Jim Gouw.

Florence was born in Cardston on November 19, 1936 to Powell and June Foggin. Florence lived and grew up in the Del Bonita area on the family farm with her two sisters Mary and Linda. She married the love of her life, Jan Gouw in 1956. Florence and Jan had four children, and raised them initially in Milk River and then moved to Lethbridge. Florence raised her family and took care of her grandmother for many years. She was the ultimate caregiver, always giving of herself. Florence was active with Royal Purple for many years, and the United Church of Canada. She also volunteered with the Interfaith Food Bank in her later years, which she enjoyed very much.

A special thank you to Rick from Lethbridge Home Care, the doctors at Family Medical and to the palliative team, doctors and staff at St. Michael’s Health Centre who were so supportive and took such great care of Florence. We are forever grateful.
