HUTCHINSON

1946-2016

RONNY (RON) JOHN HUTCHINSON of Warner, beloved husband of Louise, father to Marni Hutchinson (Kyle Girard) of Okotoks, Celeste (David) Small of Okotoks, Shaun (Brianne) Hutchinson of Lethbridge, and grandpa to Wyatt Small, passed away at the St. Michael’s Health Centre, on February 18, 2016 at the age of 69 years.

Ron is fondly remembered by his brothers Jerald (Leigh) Hutchinson and Lynden (Phyllis) Hutchinson, his twin sister Conny Schipper (Jim Fisher), sister-in-law Rosey Mueller, brothers-in-law Barry (Irene) Kirkham and Ed Neimann, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and his two Costa Rican ‘daughters’.

Ron was predeceased by his parents Jack and Verlyn Hutchinson, nephew Danny Hutchinson, brothers-in-law Pieter Schipper and Doug Mueller, and sister-in-law Susan Neimann.

Ron was raised on the family farm east of Warner and attended grades one to 12 at the Warner School. He had a great love of basketball, playing through high school, at Mount Royal College, with the Doug’s Sports Men’s team, and at the University of Lethbridge (U of L). Ron met Louise Kirkham at the U of L in 1968, and they were married in 1971.

Ron had a love of business that started while working for the Bank of Nova Scotia and eventually led to working for the Industrial Acceptance Corporation (IAC). He excelled with IAC, which gave him the opportunity to work in Lethbridge, Calgary, Red Deer and Dawson Creek.

Ron’s work in the business world took Ron and Louise to Dawson Creek, where they began their life and adventures together before returning to the family farm in 1975. Here they raised their three children and Ron successfully farmed for 34 years.

Ron worked tirelessly, volunteering in the community. He helped build and maintain the Warner Curling Rink, coached both boys’ and girls’ high school basketball, and sat on the Warner Senior Citizens’ Housing Committee. He had a great time planning the annual MJ memorial golf tournament for many years, which raised funds for cancer. Ron was also a lifetime member of the Warner Elks Club and served as Exalted Ruler for two terms.

In 2001, Ron and Louise moved to Lethbridge, although Ron continued to farm until his retirement in 2009. Following that, Ron and Louise pursued their love of travel, wintering in Phoenix where they met many great friends, and visiting countries in 6 of the 7 continents in the world. A personal favourite of Ron’s was the great pyramids of Egypt.

Family was very important to Ron, and he ensured his family spent many summers at his brother Jerald’s cabin in Kalispell and took the family on annual trips to Kelowna with the Kirkham clan. There were also many family adventures that helped instil a love of travel in his kids, including a trip of a lifetime to Disney World and the Bahamas, ski trips to Whitefish, and many camping trips to Elk Water and Waterton. The most recent family trip was to Costa Rica in 2009 to celebrate his retirement and the sale of the family farm.

Ron was an avid sportsman with a love of hunting, curling, pickle ball and golf. The Wrentham Curling Bonspiel was an annual highlight for nearly 30 years. Upon moving to Lethbridge in 2001, golf became his passion, with many close friendships being formed at the Country Club. Ron’s love of curling and golf also led him to volunteer with major golf and curling events such as the Scottie Tournament of Hearts and the Canadian Ladies’ and Mens’ Amateur Golf Tournaments.

Ron was generous to a fault, and a true gentleman. He had a great sense of humour, made friends wherever he went, and was always one to speak his mind. He loved people and accepted everyone without judgement. His character, as well as his love of family and friends, shone through in everything he did. He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at MCKILLOP UNITED CHURCH, 2329 – 15 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB., on Monday, February 22, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Trevor Potter officiating.

whom poverty and misery reduce to a condition of life

unworthy of human beings.

Arouse in the hearts of those who call you Father a hunger

and thirst for justice and peace and for fraternal charity in

deeds and in truth.

Grant, O Lord, peace in our days, peace to souls,

peace to families, peace to our country,

and peace among nations.

Amen

Chloe Galts

1943 – 2016

Chloe Galts, beloved wife of Marvin Galts for 53 years, passed away February 18, 2016 at the age of 73 surrounded by her family at Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge.

Born in Lethbridge January 5th, 1943, the second eldest of eight children, Chloe attended her primary school years at Massinisin country school in Milk River County until 1960. In her early teens she met the love of her life Marv Galts. After high school she attended the Garbett Secretarial School in Lethbridge and became the secretary to the President of CIBC Bank. Marrying Marvin September 22, 1962 she joined him on his family farm in Coutts living in a farm house with no bathroom or running water or no phone, but a ‘fabulous out-house’. Brenda was born in 1963, Bruce in 1965. Marvin and Chloe decided to change their destiny and leave the family farm. From 1966-1970 they lived in Montana while Marvin pursued his education and Chloe started her first business – an in home day care – to support the family. By 1971 they had returned to Lethbridge, and the next year would begin the personal and professional journey that is today’s Galko Homes.

She and Marvin where each other’s right hand in every aspect of life. Her dedication to him unwavering, her support unconditional, and her laughter and strength a constant source of inspiration to him. She rode the rollercoaster of their life and business with dedication and celebration. Forever at his side, and he at hers. She truly put him first every day.

Chloe was a leader, a pioneer and an artist. She was a self-taught home designer and interior decorator, developing a large following in Lethbridge of people who came to the annual Parade of Homes every year just to see ‘what Chloe does next’. Under the name of Chloe & Associates, her design company put Galko Homes on the map in Lethbridge winning awards every consecutive year she was at the helm. Chloe is acknowledged for bringing women to the forefront of leadership roles in the construction industry. She changed the face of the Canadian Home Builders Association (CHBA) – Lethbridge by insisting education, board seats and leadership roles were open to women. In true Chloe style she called the wives of builders in Lethbridge and encouraged them to play active roles in construction – to get out from behind the desk and into the field. During the early years of the company she was the Construction Supervisor – in stilettos. The only woman on site. She loved overseeing the projects, negotiating with trades for pricing, ensuring that the quality of a Galko Home was exactly as she thought it should be. She was Marvin’s partner, supporter, challenger and confident in every business they created together. Together they were honoured with the CHBA Legacy Award, and will be honoured by the University of Lethbridge Management Department in April of this year.

Despite her busy trail blazing her children and extended family were her priority every single day. She raised her children, and loved her nieces and nephews, with an open heart, high expectations, unwavering support. She taught them to take care of each other, celebrate anything, laugh every day, and tell a fantastic story. She had a special relationship with her grandson Mike who lived with them while attending university, and her granddaughter Nikki who she encouraged to follow her ‘I’m-possible’ dream. Nikki’s music brought her great comfort in her last hours. She was excited to see what her grandsons Brian and Nathan would accomplish in the years ahead. She expected optimism and resilience no matter what, and was known to say ‘suck it up’ and ‘don’t complain’ when life got tough – as it often did for her. Everyone who knew Chloe knew her stories, and had a story to tell about her – she made sure of it!

Chloe was the epitome was grit, grace and humor– facing prolonged illnesses, personal and business aspirations and trials with determination, optimism, and unwavering faith. When her time came she knew it and she ‘called it’ with as much clarity as she lived her life. When you remember her do it with stories, a smile and smartly dressed (stilettos optional) – she would expect it of us all.

She is survived by her beloved husband Marvin, children Brenda (Scott-deceased) and Bruce (Shanaley), and her four grandchildren: Michael, Nikki, Brian and Nathan; siblings Dennis Hierath, Ronald (Sharon) Hierath, Margie (Gerard) Gravel, Ramona (Randy) Michetti, Bret (Debbie) Hierath, Colleen Hierath; in-laws she considered her siblings Audrey (John) Van Leuken, Donny (Carol) Galts, Mary Koskowich (Don Kuharski), Verna Hierath, Anne (John) Gazankas. She was preceded in death by her parents Ken and Dora Hierath, and sister Dawn Morgan, and her in-laws Delwin & Nadine Galts.

Douglas Kenneth Larson

March 25 1941- Feb 6 2016

Another sailor has set sail for his next adventure. In the theme of his beloved boat Voyager 2 (and yes there is no small reference to his TV series Star Trek).

This journey is called Voyager 3. It was with great courage as with everything he did, that he made this leap into this most recent voyage. The last time I saw him I reminded him of the amazing ventures he has been on sailing from the Caribbean through the Panama Canal up to Vancouver. He then outfitted his sailboat and began his journey from Vancouver, to Mexico, across the South Pacific to New Zealand and then on to Australia by himself. He then bought Voyager 2 in Germany and sailed to the Mediterranean. He found Alayna Marina in Turkey where he enjoyed a rich social life playing tennis and enjoying the experience that is Turkey. He was most at home at the marinas that he has visited all over the world. He will be missed by all of his sailing companions and friends. He was a cross between McIver and Indiana Jones and we will all miss his stories and adventures. He was most happy on his boat with a beer in his hand looking into the horizon. He was basically a shy quiet man with a lovely slow smile that warms your heart. The sea called to him and he spent the last quarter century sailing the blue waters of the oceans, which was interesting for a man raised in southern Alberta on a farm. Doug loved the tropics and liked to be warm.

Not only was he an adventurer in spirit he shared himself with all those who loved him. He leaves behind his two children Michael and Karen, as well as his brother’s Jim and Dale, his sister Gail and his friend Irene.

It is impossible to sum up the totality of a life in a few words but he was a man that lived on his own terms, a sailor, a father, a husband, and friend. We who are left behind will look forward to joining him in the future to share with him his next adventure: Voyager 3.

The date of Memorial which will be held at the LDS Fairmont Bldg., 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM; Relief Society Room; 205 Fairmont Blvd. Lethbridge, AB

FORSYTH

GARTH DEAN FORSYTH age 88, beloved husband of Jean, rode off at sunrise February 18, 2016. “See ya later, Alligator. Don’t get your hum gum twisted over your huzzy guzzy!” He was born to Neil Snow and Chloe Roseltha (Hatch) Forsyth early in the morning of December 5, 1927 in Cardston, Alberta, Canada—just prior to a record-making blizzard. He stood 6’2”, with dark hair and intense blue eyes that could see into your soul. He met Elna Jean Campbell, daughter of William David and Elna (Bohne) Campbell, while both worked at the Rothe ranch. They married October 14, 1948 in Hillspring, Alberta, Canada. In 1951, on the ninth of January (Garth’s mother’s birthday) they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Cardston Alberta Temple. Every spring he sought the first crocuses, buttercups, and shooting stars, and brought them to Jean— usually before anyone else knew they were blooming. They purchased a home in the Kimball Valley in 1958 and raised cattle, hogs, sheep, chickens, an occasional goat, goose or turkey, and 11 children. Few could nurse a sick animal or comfort a child quite as tenderly as Garth – he felt reverence for every life.

He was apprenticed as a saddle maker as a boy, and at 12 bought his first horse (he would rather catch a horse than walk a block). He then got a job herding milk cows for the town of Cardston. Garth’s preferred occupation was cowboy; his children and grandchildren enjoyed riding, fixing fences, trapping gophers and learning to love nature alongside him. For many years he managed the Ross Lake Community Pasture from May through October. Other vocations supplementing this included: truck driver, sheep shearer, senior care assistant, retail clerk, carpenter and general contractor. He was an all-around handyman. If it was broken, he could fix it. A highlight of his life was assisting with renovations of the Cardston Alberta Temple. Though he built many bridges, houses, barns and quonsets, his real accomplishment was building a life of love, friendship and service. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as Branch President of the Blood Branch, a missionary with Jean in the Los Angeles Family History Centre, an ordinance worker in the temple, and in many other capacities through the years. He enjoyed learning every day and was a powerful example of faith, fortitude, service, and good cheer. He began to ski at age 50, joined Facebook at 80 and became proficient with Skype at 85! Garth is survived by 10 children, Rex (Betty Lou); Gene (Debbie Lyle); Randy (Kathy); Tim (Karyn); Linda (David) Ames; Shane (Sharon); Necia (Richard) Kittler; Scott (Teri); Becky (Kevin Penner); and Bonnie (Darcy) Erickson; his foster son Wilfred (Charlotte) Marks Sr.; 52 grandchildren, 125 great- grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. He is also survived by 2 brothers: Mylo (Matilda) and Bryce (June); and his only sister Ruth (Robert-deceased)) Horne. He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: Rex (Chic), Scott (Gladys), Ken (June), and Duane (Verna) Forsyth; two granddaughters: Tausha and Marie; and one great-grandson: Clayton.

The family expresses appreciation to all those whose kind words, visits, sincere regards, and reminiscing, cheered and lifted him recently – “the folks that call [him] friend.” We also express gratitude to Dr. Playfair, Dr. Tailfeathers, and other doctors, nurses and staff at the Cardston Hospital; staff at the Chinook Lodge; and other nursing staff and volunteers for their special concern and compassionate care.

Family will greet friends at the Legacy Funeral Home, on Friday, February 26th from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. or at the church from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.

The Funeral service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, CARDSTON ALBERTA WEST STAKE CENTER, 846 1st Ave W, Cardston, Alberta on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27TH, 2016 AT 11:00 A.M.

Interment to follow in the Cardston Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the LDS general missionary fund: https://www.ldsphilanthropies.org/donations/lds-church/ missionary-fund.html?cde1=807

ALTIERI, Antonietta (nee Valerio)

August 25, 1924 – Sessano, Isernia, Italy

February 25, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta

Antonietta passed away peacefully early Thursday morning at the Brentwood Extended Care Centre, at the age of 91 years.

She aged with grace and dignity. A powerfully courageous, bright and kind woman, who exemplified what it means to be human. “No” never escaped from her lips. Morally and ethically she always knew what to do; not because she had to, but because it was right. Antonietta was loved by many.

At 29, she, along with two very young daughters, sailed from Naples to Halifax, then travelled west to reunite with her husband. Before moving to Calgary, she lived in Cowley and Lethbridge.

Her raison d’etre was her unwavering love for her family, often displayed in the form of food. Antonietta was most happy when she was having people over, for whom she could cook. By friends and family, we were often reminded of her exemplary culinary skills. She was a master chef and baker; a sous chef only to our father when they made cheese, sausages, wine and while nurturing the most amazing garden.

She initially taught herself English by reading cookbooks and later watching cooking shows. Growing up, we were regularly the recipients of her sartorial skills. Every event, including the first and last day of school, we had new outfits, either self-designed or copied from a catalogue. At a time when it was uncommon for women to work outside of the home, especially Italian women, Antonietta hoed sugar beets, worked at Broader’s Canning Factory before becoming the cook at the Devon Nursing Home in Lethbridge. For a period, she belonged to the Catholic Women’s League.

Loving remembered and forever in our hearts, Antonietta is survived by her daughters, Costanza Altieri of Vancouver, and Flora Altieri (Tony Bromhead) of Calgary; granddaughter Ramona Lisell of Red Deer; sister-in-law Antonietta Evangelista; and numerous nieces and nephews in Calgary, Italy, Switzerland, Argentina, and Brazil. She was predeceased by her husband Antimo in October of 2006; and her sister Cecilia Di Marra of Italy.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (640 – 19th Avenue N.W.) on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 8:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (640 – 19th Avenue N.W.) on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. BERG, Orlan Junior

December 23, 1928 – February 29, 2016

Orlan Junior Berg, beloved husband of Loreen Berg, passed away peacefully on February 29, 2016. He was born in Claresholm on December 23, 1928 to Morris and Myrtle Berg and was the oldest of 3 children. Orlan farmed and raised cattle all his life just outside of Claresholm. He went to tech school and learned how to weld; helping many neighbors over the years. For 50 years he drove 3 generations of children on his school bus. Lots of “his” kids knew they were in trouble when those big eyebrows came down. Dad was a long term member of Peace Lutheran Church, serving many terms as president and deacon and loved to sing bass in the choir. He loved to drive and always wanted to be a greyhound bus driver. Dad and Mom drove across Canada many times to visit their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren in Nova Scotia; to Alaska, and many trips to the mountains and throughout the US. Dad loved to take photos of waterfalls and mountains throughout their travels and we all have some of those memories.

Dad and Mom have five daughters. He was inventive in keeping us entertained and would often flood us a rink to skate on, teach us how to ride our bikes or drive the car while on his lap, welded and mounted basketball nets in the barn loft and pulled us behind the tractor on our sled. It seemed as though Dad was always surrounded by women wherever he went. He was the chauffeur for mom and her friends to many events.

In retirement Dad learned how to type, run a computer, weave and play the piano. He wrote a book of his memoirs that many have enjoyed. He also discovered carpentry and built, donated and sold many bird houses, whirly gigs, churches and elevators that he would cajole Mom into painting.

Lovingly remembered and forever in our hearts by his wife, Loreen, his daughters Cheryl Berg, Wendy (Gordon) Frank, Debbie (Bruce) Rathbun, Janice (Gord) Foxcroft, Brenda (Lindsay) Bell; his grandchildren: Dylana (Dustin) Pretty, Trina Frank, Jill (Michael) Hooke, Greg (Erica) Frank, Marina (Michael) Doak, Brad (Chelsea) Rathbun, Mitch & Riley Foxcroft; great-grandchildren: Olivia Pretty, Eli and Wyatt Hooke, Caspian Doak, Rory, Astrid and Rhys Rathbun, Alexander Rathbun; his sister Marlene (Jack) Thompson and Sister-in-law Bernice (Per) Sakstad, brother-in-law Norman Wold and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by his parents and brother, Wayne Berg.

The Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, March 4th at Peace Lutheran Church, 4304 – 2 St. West, Claresholm with Pastor Donna Alm officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Orlan’s name may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, Box 2211, Lethbridge, AB T1J 4K7 or the charity of one’s choice.

Ronald James Coombes

Jan. 6, 1940 – Feb. 27, 2016

The world lost a great man February 27th, when RONALD JAMES COOMBES said goodbye to his family and friends for a final time. Ron will be remembered as a gentleman with a wonderful sense of humour and a loving and generous spirit that had its foundation in family and extended to all those around him.

Ron was born and raised in Headley, England before immigrating to Canada in 1967 with his wife Georgina “Jean” (nee Payne) three daughters, and $121 in his pocket. In Canada, they soon added a son to their family. A lifetime carpenter, Ron was proud of his first job in his adopted homeland at the Sash and Door. He later worked on the construction at the University of Lethbridge, and as a foreman at Fica Cabinets and Elite Wood Cabinets. He ran his own businesses – South Country Kitchens and Ron’s Carpentry, while helping family and friends build their own homes in his spare time.

What really defined Ron was his selfless work in the community of Coalhurst, where he was the volunteer coordinator who helped guide the dream of a community centre, then led a crew of local volunteers to actually build it. The Town of Coalhurst later named a room at the community centre in his honor.

Ron dreamed of a robust and active Coalhurst branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. After years of meeting in the local elementary school basement, he eventually led a group of volunteers to build a beautiful Legion headquarters that still serves as the hub of the community.

He served on Coalhurst Town Council for 12 years, including several as the Deputy Mayor and was instrumental in helping the Hamlet of Coalhurst gain Village and later Town status. In his many years in the community, he also served on the Water Users Association, the Taxpayer’s Association, and the Coalhurst Branch (#273) of the Royal Canadian Legion, where he had an honorary lifetime membership and had served as President and Executive Officer.

Ron’s family and friends will remember his goofy humour, his passionate love for his wife of 53 years, his love for a good sing-a-long, his passion and pride for his family, his natural and unspoken protective nature, his work ethic, and his fierce hugs. Our lives won’t be the same without him.

Ron powered through many years of poor health with amazing strength and dignity. His family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Janzen, Tara Evans (RN) and the staff at the Heart Function Clinic at Chinook Regional Hospital, where he received excellent care for many years. They would also like to thank Dr. Benke for his gentle consideration and treatment of Ron; and a special thank you to the nurses and staff on 4C at CRH, where he was treated with kindness and dignity in his final hours.

In addition to Georgina, his loving wife of 53 years, Ron is survived by his children: Annette (Chad) Titsing, Janine (Scott) Sakatch, Patricia (John) Slywka, and Andrew (Judi) Coombes, grandchildren Kourtney and Brooke Titsing, Terry and Haylea Ecklund, Amanda and Amy Slywka, David (Lacey) Knoblichand Jennifer (Brian) VanDeKraats; great-grandchildren Carter, Emily, Braden, Abbey, Grady, Kylie, and Dacen. The youngest of 10 children, Ron is also survived by brother John (Valerie) Coombes, sisters Marina (Sydney) Lewis, and Pam Roberts, and many nieces and nephews in Canada, England, New Zealand and Australia.

A Celebration of Ron’s Life will be held on Friday, March 4, 2016 beginning at 2 p.m. at the COALHURST LEGION #273, 5205 6th Street, Coalhurst, AB.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully ask family and friends to make a donation to the Heart Function Clinic c/o the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation

 Brewin

Gerald Grimshaw Brewin, beloved husband of Margaret Luise Brewin, father of Derek Gerald Brewin (Colette Forseille), Mark Winston Brewin (Jane Bowerfind), and Kathleen Margaret Brewin Oxford (Melvin Oxford), grandfather of Zoë Margaret Brewin, Harper Strong Brewin, and McCoy Gerald Oxford, died Sunday, February 21, at The Gardens senior home in Qualicum Beach, British Columbia.

A memorial service will be held at St. Theodore’s Anglican Church, 5120 44 Ave., Taber, at 2 PM, March 6; following the service a wake will take place at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall, 5203 48 Ave., Taber.

Although he lived his last years on Vancouver Island, Gerald spent most of his life farming and ranching in the Purple Springs area, where he was born in November, 1929, on the eve of the Great Depression, to R.F. and Marjorie Brewin. He was one of ten brothers and sisters: three from his father’s first marriage and the others, like Gerald, from the second. The experience of growing up amidst the general financial and social strains of the era had a lasting impact on his worldview, and no doubt accounted somewhat for the conservative and careful attitude he often took to life. Nonetheless, a childhood on the farm—largely spent outdoors, surrounded by all manner of animals, and with a large group of siblings to play with—was also a wonderful experience for a boy like Gerald.

He was a man of dialectical disposition: although introverted and shy, and often awkward in large crowds, he sparkled in conversations among smaller groups. Strong and physical, comfortable with hard labor and a surprisingly good athlete even in middle age, he was at the same time a great reader of books and liked playing with ideas. In a different time and a different context he could have become an academic or a writer. He disliked spending money as a rule, but on occasion, almost on a whim, would splurge on a gift or gamble the night away at a Las Vegas blackjack table.

He had what could fairly be described as a passionate relationship with the natural world, and in line with his overall religious inclinations, a somewhat mystical one. He was generally disinclined to make hard and fast distinctions between human beings and other creatures. For that reason some of his best friends were animals, notably a brown quarter-horse stallion, Davy, who could cut a cow and calf from a herd almost independent of human guidance, and his dog Sport, a large wolfhound mix. While there is some family debate about Sport’s level of intelligence, there is no doubt at all about the fact that he adored Gerald, and that Gerald adored him.

Some of the other things Gerald loved: raisin pie, rain in the mornings, working with his hands, old Ingrid Bergman movies, the plays of William Shakespeare, ice cream of all kinds and flavors, chocolate bars, honey poured on many different types of food, cowboy poetry, good rum, playing Scrabble with friends, a well-done steak, trips to England, the Red Ensign, long and learned discussions about the existence of the Sasquatch, genealogical investigations into the lives of his ancestors, the Book of Common Prayer, planting trees, and anything—a tool, a piece of furniture, a dwelling space, a poem—that was well-made and that showed a sense of care on the part of its maker.

On mornings when he couldn’t find the right kind of cereal in the house, he would eat a slice of bread with milk and sugar poured over top of it, which is more disgusting than it sounds.

He was a large soul: gentle and compassionate, curious, always attuned to the beauty of things. He was fiercely loyal to his family and friends, and would probably want it to be known above all else how much he loved them, and how proud he was of them.

ANDRÈ

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, papa and husband, FERNANDO RESENDES ANDRÈ, who passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital, Lethbridge, AB., on Monday, February 29, 2016, at the age of 76 years.

Fernando was a proud and devoted family man and leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 49 years, Ann André; devoted children, Tina (Jeff) Hepple, Anna (Barry) Gunderson, Carmela (Dave) Van moorsel and Marcel (Evelyn) André; and his precious grandchildren, Sydney, Emilie, Lilyana, River and Liam. He is also lovingly remembered by his brothers Antonio André and Elias André; sisters Ludovina Resendes and Claudina André as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Fernando was predeceased by his mother Maria Resendes, father Joáo (John) André, brother Eugenio André and nephew Paul André.

Dad was born and raised in Faial da Terra, São Miguel, Azores, Portugal. He immigrated with his family to Canada in 1960 at the age of 21. He first settled in Coaldale, Alberta where he worked on a sugar beet farm, determined to create a successful and prosperous life in his adopted homeland. He later moved to Lethbridge where he met the love of his life, Ann Grosso. Dad soon began his lifelong career at Purity Dairy where he advanced quickly in the company and became a Culture Product Developer and Cheese Producer. Dad was an honest man with a tremendous work ethic and believed in always doing your best at whatever you do. He worked hard to instill these values in his children and grandchildren. He retired in 2004 after a distinguished career in which he received numerous provincial and national awards for development and advancement in the dairy product industry.

Dad enjoyed music and spending time outdoors in the sunshine. As a young man he played the saxophone and clarinet in his hometown marching band. He also spent many years singing in the St. Patrick’s church choir. Dad loved spending time at home with his family and we have many memories of countless summer days spent gardening and working with Dad around the house. He prided himself in keeping our yard and garden in pristine shape and was well known for delivering baskets of fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the neighbourhood every summer. Dad also loved cooking and enjoyed teaching us kids how to cook traditional Portuguese dishes. We will always cherish the memories of him and Mom cooking up huge family meals for every special occasion.

During his later years, Dad’s health started to decline. Although he couldn’t get around as fast as he used to, he still enjoyed starting his planting seedlings each spring and getting ready for his next harvest with his grandchildren in tow. He loved nothing more than sitting out on the patio in the sunshine with Mom, enjoying visits from his children and grandchildren.

Rest in eternal peace, Dad. You will live on forever in our hearts and memories.

Family and friends are invited to the Prayer Service at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge Alberta on Friday, March 4th, 2016 at 7:00 P.M with Deacon Frank Peta officiating.

A Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2405-12th Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta on Saturday March 5th, 2016 at 9:30 A.M, with Father Kevin Tumback Celebrant.

In addition to Georgina, his loving wife of 53 years, Ron is survived by his children: Annette (Chad) Titsing, Janine (Scott) Sakatch, Patricia (John) Slywka, and Andrew (Judi) Coombes, grandchildren Kourtney and Brooke Titsing, Terry and Haylea Ecklund, Amanda and Amy Slywka, David (Lacey) Knoblich and Jennifer (Brian) VanDeKraats; great-grandchildren Carter, Emily, Braden, Abbey, Grady, Kylie, and Dacen.

Theodore’s Anglican Church, 5120 44 Ave., Taber, at 2 PM, March 6; following the service a wake will take place at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall, 5203 48 Ave., Taber.Although he lived his last years on Vancouver Island, Gerald spent most of his life farming and ranching in the Purple Springs area, where he was born in November, 1929, on the eve of the Great Depression, to R.F. and Marjorie Brewin.

 Shirley Florence Perry

1935 – 2016

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Shirley Perry, beloved wife of Daniel Perry, announce her passing on March 22, 2016 at Chinook Regional Hospital.

Shirley Florence Perry (Day) was born in London, England, the first child of James T. Day and Florence N. Day, following Shirley were her siblings Pamela Burr (husband Tony deceased), Janet (Brian) Hunt, and Martin James Day (deceased).

At eight years old Shirley was evacuated out of London with Pam (aged 4); because of the Second World War bombs they spent two years with strangers who took them in. Her schooling was completed in Fulham London, where she also worked in entertainment for 2 years for the troops, and then she became a telephone operator once her schooling was completed.

On a hockey game trip to Nottingham, she was introduced to the love of her life, Daniel W. Perry. They were married October 12, 1957; he was her husband, father of their boys, lover, protector, friend, sweetheart, companion, and her caregiver for 58 years.

Wayne Daniel (Beverly), of Whitecourt was their first child with Dale Martin (Deborah) of Stony Plain coming a year later, both were born in Nottingham, England.

In 1970 they took the big adventure, Dan was offered work in Canada, and the family spent 13 years in Grande Cache, Alberta.

Shirley is also survived by three granddaughters Loni in Edmonton, Ashley (Tyson) in Prince George, and Megan in Whitecourt, as well as step grandchildren Candace (Marc) in Hinton, Steven (Melissa) in Coaldale and four great grandchildren. Also left to mourn are four sisters in law and numerous nieces and nephews in England.

Shirley’s life has always included volunteering, starting in England in 1947 with Mental Health, in order to help with her brother Martin. When they moved to Canada, her life in Grande Cache was filled with running the concession for the boys’ minor hockey, sitting on many Boards, Women’s clubs, and anything to do with youth and education. She also organized shopping trips to Hinton, when prices were too high in Grande Cache. Her Lethbridge volunteering efforts included the Craft Club at the hospital, snuggler of babies at the hospital, and T.O.P.S. Her intentions were always honourable, and it was her desire to make sure all were included in the many causes and activities which she held near and dear.

Kazimierz “Kaz” Terajewicz

1915 – 2016

KAZIMIERZ “KAZ” TERAJEWICZ of Lethbridge beloved husband of Barbara Terajewicz, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Sunday, March 20, 2016 at the age of 100 years.

Kaz was fortunate to be born into a wealthy land baron family and was raised in Chorosowszczyzna, District of Nowogrodek, Poland. He enjoyed a wonderful childhood growing up on the large family farm. With the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in 1939, he was deported to Siberia to work in a slave labor camp. He was released in 1941 once the allies persuaded the Soviets to free surviving Poles being held in these camps. In 1942, Kaz enlisted with the Polish Army and was stationed in Iran, Palestine, Iraq, Egypt and Italy. He often spoke of their win at one of the most difficult battles at Monte Casino, Italy. At the end of the war, he was sent to Great Britain and served with the Polish Resettlement Corps until honourably discharged. Kaz arrived in Halifax on May 25, 1947. It was there decided that he should make Montreal his home as he spoke some French, having learned it from one of his nannies. However, once on the train, an infamous game of “bridge” was started and Kaz missed the stop in Montreal. He arrived in Lethbridge and for a short time worked on sugar beets. He then worked for the Lethbridge Experimental (Research) Station for approximately 2 years and following that, obtained a position with the P.F.R.A., working on various irrigation construction projects including the St. Mary’s Dam, Waterton Dam, Brooks Aquaduct as well as numerous other smaller projects. Dad worked for the P.F.R.A for 32 years and retired in 1980.

Kaz was very proud of his Polish heritage but he also loved his newly adopted country, Canada. He also loved his family, and probably more than anything he was especially proud of his grandchildren, Matthew and Stephanie. Kaz and Barbara enjoyed travelling and some of their destinations included Italy, Poland, Rhode Island, California and Montana. Most often he enjoyed spending time in our beautiful Rocky Mountains. His hobbies included walking, hiking, fishing, bird hunting, and skiing & curling in his earlier years. Without a doubt, Dad’s favourite hobby was playing bridge. With his talented bridge partners, Dad earned many medals and in the first 33 of his almost 36 years of retirement, you could often find him at the LSCO, playing a great game of bridge!

Kaz was loved by his family and will be dearly missed.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Yola (Steve) Gruca and his grandson, Matthew Gruca, all of Lethbridge. Kaz is also survived by his sister Jadwiga Boczkowska of Poland; his sister-in-law Aurelia Kochanek of Rhode Island and numerous nieces & nephews.

Kaz was predeceased by his parents, Wladyslaw and Maria (Ancuta) Terajewicz; brother Leon; sister Wladyslawa and by his granddaughter Stephanie in 2007.

In memory of Kaz, donations may be made to STARS Calgary Base – Head Office, 1441 Aviation Park NE, Box 570, Calgary, AB T2E 8M7, or to the charity of your choice.

DILLON, Jon PATRICK

It is with broken hearts that we announce that Patrick Dillon passed away after a brief and sudden illness on March 22, 2016, at age 49.

Patrick will be loved always and dearly missed by his family – Kelly Buckley, his wife and love of his life; parents Jon and Jan; brother Eric {Candace}; the Dillon and Buckley extended families; and his special pal, Eggbert. Especially dear to his heart were his eight “niblings” – Taryn, Jalen and Kaley Dillon; Shelby and Kennedy Steidl; and Justin, Kendra and Jason Wagman.

Patrick was a graduate of Vancouver Community College and dedicated his whole life to the service of others. He was a volunteer firefighter, which he often referred to as “the best job ever”; the architect of many human service organizations including the Boys and Girls Club of Camrose, and the Today Family Violence Help Centre in Edmonton. For many years, Patrick was a Family Violence and Bullying Prevention Co-ordinator with Central Alberta Child and Family Services (provincial government). In 2011 he assumed the role of Provincial Co-ordinator for the Alberta Father Involvement Initiative. Patrick took it from a fledgling organization to a provincial project that co-ordinated with national and international similar organizations. He coined the phrase “There is a DAD for that” and created resources and delivered seminars across the province to support communities and organizations to promote positive fathering. Patrick was a force of nature and wherever Patrick lived or worked, he changed the world for the better. One of the things that gave Patrick great joy was to be “Santa” at Christmas time. There are countless children into whose lives he brought a bit of magic each year. He also had an incredible network of friends and colleagues who will miss him.

Patrick was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba and grew up across the country including Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta. After he and Kelly were married in 2009, they settled in Edmonton.

Our families would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Drs. Liu, Carney and MacKinnon, the exceptional nursing staff and pastoral services from the Grey Nuns ICU for the care and compassion that Patrick received.

A forever Green Bay Packers fan, Patrick lived life like it was an adventure – he loved volleyball, sailing, photography and last year fulfilled his lifelong dream of owning a motorhome. He was looking forward to camping trips with Kelly and Eggbert this summer and exploring new places together.

“Life takes us to unexpected places. Love brings us home”

A gathering of family and friends to say good-bye to Patrick will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Monday, March 28 at Glenwood Funeral Home, South of Wye Road on range Road 232, Sherwood Park. If you wish to honour Patrick, in lieu of flowers, a donation to the Edmonton Humane Society would be most appreciated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

She loved to travel; the Hawaiian Islands were one of her favorite places. She loved movies and music, especially listening to her favorite band Train. She absolutely loved photography & flowers, especially combining the two of them. Heather loved reading books, and read thousands of books over her lifetime, especially her very favorite author Fern Michaels. She was an animal lover and her pets were also her children!

Heather did not want a funeral, she did not want mourning, and she wanted a celebration of her life with a party of friends and family, with her “Train” cd’s playing in the background! She will be forever missed by all the lives she touched!

LUCHIA

Perry Wayne Luchia passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on Wednesday, March 23rd, 2016 at his home on Buffalo Pound Lake at the age of 57 years. Perry was born on April 26th, 1958 in Lethbridge, AB and was raised on the family farm at Nobleford, AB. Following High School graduation in 1976, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces and trained as a Comm Radar Technician. In 1977, Perry was posted to Moose Jaw, SK. He was selected to the Snowbird Team as a technician for the 1981 and 1982 seasons. This opportunity peaked his interest in flying and the decision was made to apply for pilot training. His application was successful and in 1986, he proudly earned his pilot wings at CFB Moose Jaw. Perry’s first posting was to CFB North Bay at 414 EW Sqn flying the Falcon and Challenger aircrafts. In 1990 he was posted to AETE Cold Lake as their standard’s pilot. In 1994, the decision was made to retire from the Air Force and move east to work as a Production Test Pilot for Bombardier Aerospace in Montreal. Perry flew the Challenger, the Regional Jet but his favourite was the Water Bomber. In his words, it was “real flying” – no bells and whistles. At 40, Perry was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. He continued to fly for a few years before retiring. Perry will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife of 33 years, Sandra; sons, Kyle and Kurt (Jennifer); daughter, Erin; mother, Lucinda; brother, Kevin; sisters: Wanda, Gwen and Marianne (Jesse); father and mother-in-law, Jerrold and Barbara Delahey; brothers-in-law, David (Karen) and Scott (Lynn); as well as numerous other relatives. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, March 29th, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in Moose Jaw Funeral Home. Reverend Linda Tomlinson-Seebach will officiate and a private family interment will take place at St. Columba Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. As an expression of sympathy, donations in Perry’s name may be made to the Parkinson Society Saskatchewan, 610 Duchess St, Saskatoon, SK S7K 0R1.
